But they don’t excel at building aircraft. They are a long long way behind Airbus and Boeing. They won’t be forever but I will take at least a decade to catch up.

Airbus can build 160 A320 series per month, plus wide body and A220 series, all up about 200 per month. They could deliver COMACs order book in under 5 months, if all the ducks are lined up correctly. Building commercial aircraft is one of the most complicated industries in the world. It will take the Chinese at least a decade maybe 2 before they can be level with Airbus.
China has like 1500 planes pre-ordered, about half split is between Boeing and Airbus, and there's some small amount of Russian planes. They'll certainly buy more Russian planes with the developing situation, as well as ramp up their own production.
