I work in makeup retail, and I actually learned that brands are only allowed so many SKU’s or products on shelves, so I’m thinking brands like Huda and all her spin-offs are trying to obtain more shelf space (along with some shady tax write off mess I’m sure) but I thought that was interesting 🤔🤔🤔
Yup...I am a retired retailer over 32 years , the #1 reason they have spin off "labels" vs putting everything under let's say the parent brand like Huda is to take chances and protect the parent company's financials . The new brand will have special tax protections etc, (completely different by Country) and also the shelf space is a factor, but it is primarily about the financials and it's the best way to branch off into other areas and keep the "parent" company protected if the new launches tank and don't do well. If a new launch /company tanks they can definitely use these as writes offs and the parent companies profit is separated. At the end of the day it's all aggregated up to the parent company, but for investment purposes they can very cleanly keep the financials totally separate.
They can also reuse the same skus and save money. One of the distributors we carry (not makeup, but this seems like something any company can do) carries many "brands" and so brand a and brand b have the same skus for their lines so they didn't have to pay for new skus
Remember when brands had good core products then released collaborations maybe once a year and it was amazing. Now a whole brand can be solely based on collabs. The magic has gone.
Just in case people aren't aware, Mel Thompson passed away a few days ago. Her husband has posted about it on her Instagram to inform people and to thank people for condolences and sharing stories. She is survived by her 4 children and husband. She passed away just a couple days after her most recent video post. Mel was a really special person who truly love beauty including the products but especially the artistry of it. I first heard about Mel when she was mentioned on Beauty News a couple years ago so I feel it's really fitting to share this shocking heartbreaking news so others who maybe enjoyed her and her content are aware. I'm just a subscriber, I only had one comment interaction with her and just as you would expect she was so humble and sweet in the her comment reply. Mel was one of a kind and I will never hear the words "Hi Beauties" without instantly feeling like I'm watching a video where I can hear her, see her huge smile and waving hands as though I'm watching a video that very moment. Mel is truly missed ♥️💋

Smashbox needs to bring back Berlin Glow! That product was do sought out and so limited that they are dumb to not bring it back. The hype they could have drummed up by announcing Berlin Glow as the one they were bringing back would have been unmatched. Such a wasted opportunity.

Oh, that's interesting about the under eye brightener. I actually think an expanded range on that sounds lovely. I dont really care much about the highlighters though since highlighters are so common nowadays.

Yup, spreading the money out makes it harder to lose it all if one branch goes up. It's so common for companies (in the states at least) for companies to branch out and even have a bunch of LLCs because of his the tax system is able to be manipulated to pay as little as possible so I'm sure Huda has someone has a solid CFO leading this from that point. Also I think she does it because not everyone is pro-Huda so if she's got a bunch of product lines under just Huda that's harder to sell but if they are setup to look, act, and be ran like individual companies with names that don't automatically link back to her then it's easier to get customers to purchase (essentially tricking them); this tricking marketing/branding tactic is something that's been commonplace in the food industry (major companies like General Mills actually owning a small organic, "healthy" brand) for decades so I'm not surprised Huda is doing it because the every day consumer isn't researching ownership and umbrella brands especially when standing in a store looking to buy a moisturizer or palette.

I’m not a beautybay stan but I have to defend the colourstories: they pulled the colours directly from the films and they have corresponding names (like Dumbo sky, Dumbo skin etc), like Bésame does and I actually thought that that was a cool concept at a more affordable price than besame. Also the reviews of the formula are good, so maybe better than besame 😂
The Oden's Eye collab is the only one that interests me. I love Annette, and I like how the brand is showcasing the mythology of each influencer's culture, as it opens it up from just Norse mythology.
I got the jungle book palette from beauty bay x Disney, and it's really good! Their eyeshadow formula is great, and the color story's fine as well. I think that the fact that they used actual colors from the movies is pretty cool. The packaging was the only disappointment, as a matter of fact, it's just a picture printed on cardboard.
Yeah that's the only one that had a really pretty color story. I love Alice in Wonderland (the Cheshire cat especially), but that was a horribly disappointing color story!
I actually really liked the Smashbox Anti Hero recent collection. It was small, fun, and the colours totally matched the characters, so I'm calling that a successful superhero collab.
I personally love Oden’s Eye Cosmetics and the collabs excite me. I think the color stories and shades are neat. I’m also excited by Glamlite. That’s mainly it, which is better for my wallet.
Yes, I kept reloading cause I have been waiting for this episode. When Hailey spoke about waiting about Christmas all year, I felt it in my heart. I am such a notorious Christmas lover that I leave some Christmas stuff all year long. The Anastasia palette gives me Too Faced teddy bare collection vibes. c. Bobbie Brown holiday is sending Bare Mineral palette feels. d. If collabs continue for holiday my wallet might be safe.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head - in one way it’s ‘why does a brand have to collaborate to sell makeup, just sell good makeup’ but in another way it’s ‘brands should consolidate, there’s just too much makeup’ I think it’s really is a tough position because the market is so over saturated and most people at this point aren’t grabbed by things just being good.
Kat you 100% sold me on the Kaleidos lip clays, so I was so excited that not only were there new colors, but you could make your own sets! Such a great consumer-friendly move by them
The Nomad Haunted Europe pallette is amazing! It's my 1st Nomad product and I love everything about it. It's grundgy but can be used in so many ways. 🎩🐕💸
I'm not into their metallic shades. I have one of their palettes, the colours are nice, don't get me wrong but their glitter/metallic shades have very large glittery (imo) and it sucks at staying in place without super strong primer.

The best collab is definitely the Legendary Diversa collection from Oden's Eye, I follow all the creators and I love the colour stories. The only other thing that peaks my interest is the Nomad Haunted Europe.
The colourpop hocus pocus palette last year was lovely, really witchy vibes. This year it looked like some kind of spring palette? All the shade names were off and it looked nothing like Hocus Pocus. It’s just quite off IMO and I think holding the candle ransom behind a full set purchase was terrible! Also they were expecting it to sell out so fast, they sent out this email telling people to get in quick or you wouldn’t get it, then it didn’t sell out for days!

Spot on about the Indigo Ink palette. I was so excited for that given the cover art. But I can't stand it. As it's always a nightmare to try and get any palettes from Menagerie, I'm actually kind of happy they blew it because I feel zero pressure to pick that one up.
I honestly am really going to miss Becca. I love their blushes, highlighters, and illuminating primers. I wish there was more under the smashbox brand. Also, I looove the Milk skin tint that’s in that clicky pen but they always malfunction at some point that it ends up being a waste of money when I can’t get the foundation out.

look, I'm not going to lie, high end brands collaborating with weird properties (e.g. Monopoly) doesn't necessarily bother me if they're going to have really cool packaging and it's backed up by the brand's good formula, but most of the time the makeup or packaging isn't up to the brand's usual quality (cough cough Urban Decay)
I NEVER buy collaborations but that sigma colab has my attention!! I probably wouldn't even wear the colors but they did so good with the color story matching the movie that I love it!
Conspiracy theory about why influencers who come out with brands never start with things that fit what they’re known for: they’re known for things that they hype up a lot and they either feel loyal to a brand (for example, Nikkie is known for talking about eye primer and for bold bright eyeshadow) or have deals with a brand (so for her case, P. Louise, Juvias Place, Beauty Bay) so they intentionally pick products to start with that aren’t those things
I think it's more likely because if they are known for a particular product and they don't make it better than other brands they rave about then they will disappoint their audience. So they try to raise money on other products while they take time to invest in what they really love.
Too many nostalgic makeup collaborations. The only two I actually liked were the beauty bay Disney and the makeup revolution corpse bride. Beauty bay did two things right with the collection. (1) older movies focused without using princesses and (2) using colors pulled from the actual movie. Makeup revolution corpse bride actually took color story inspiration from the movie with the cool tones (that random warm palette doesn't exist for me) and the outside packaging has some beautiful image. I fucking hate this years hocus pocus collection. The packaging is too cutesy and the color story of the eyeshadows and super shocks have nothing to do with the movie inspiration. I would have bought the candle but colourpop only sold it in the US$99 set. Last year's collection while not an original color story was more true to the movie with the grungy/vampy colors and the red lipsticks. I love the odens eye collab. Actual beauty creators, interesting colors and nice packaging. The glamlite cocktail hour is hit and miss for me. I like the dirty martini palette and the chocolate martini palette but hate the wine and margarita palettes. That plastic wine bottle looks like what a person who drink exclusively boxed wines thinks a "fancy" bottle of wine should look like. Also the palette is more of a bluple color story with a pop of champagne and burgundy.
I think the Ink palette could keep the two beautiful blues and that inky gray, but should have had some gorgeous raspberry colors, a burnt red or two, and some more bluish greens. I mean, those oranges and yellows are cool AF... but they belong in a coral inspired palette.
Hailey, my family got a cat-flap installed on the back-door! I often would say to my mum, "that's the best thing you ever bought"! Absolute game changer!
I passed on the CP x Hocus Pocus collab again. If the candle and mirror were sold separately, I would have gotten it. I would have tried the berry and black lipstick, but they were sold out by time I got around to them.

Out of all the new things I only ordered the new Menagerie Indigo Ink and Odens Eye palettes. When I feel overwhelmed by all the releases I definitely stick to the same small indie brands with cute packaging and nice color stories. The Menagerie already came in the mail and the formula is really nice and improved from their former palettes!
Maybe the XX & Matrix collaboration is a celebration of my son's due date when I was pregnant with him (also happens to be the release date of April 8, 1999).
I've got one of Sigma's original 12 pan palettes and I love its formula. I don't have any of its other products but I loved its eyeshadow formula. The idea that it's even better now is intriguing. I also think that Cinderella collection looks gorgeous but blues/purples are not my jam. But it's beautiful all the same.
I really hope your right about Anastasia being back at ABH, I miss the excitement when they released new stuff (When it didn’t happen as often as colourpop I mean) and the more professional vibe they had ☺️😍
Becca’s under eye corrector is legit, but I might prefer the one from Beautypie.. both are amazing, and work as a brightener and as a primer which is really essential under my 59 year old eyes. Keeps the area supple feeling, no dryness. Done w children’s makeup packaging. My undertone is so yellow that purples are wearable on me. PML.. no hon, sorry. The highlighter looks pretty. Not wearing much makeup these days, though I am about to be working in the world again. Sooooo.. I’ll be shopping my sizable stash. Love you ladies’ work. I wish Menagerie would bring back the small purple octopus pallet. I had just discovered them as they disconnected it. I totally thought this was got to be the big sister pallet of my purple dreams. The best collab is definitely the Legendary Diversa collection from Oden's Eye, I follow all the creators and I love the colour stories.
The only other thing that peaks my interest is the Nomad Haunted Europe.
I love the 'would you like' or 'did you want some' titles they crack me uppp

The colourpop hocus pocus palette last year was lovely, really witchy vibes. This year it looked like some kind of spring palette? All the shade names were off and it looked nothing like Hocus Pocus. It’s just quite off IMO and I think holding the candle ransom behind a full set purchase was terrible!
Also they were expecting it to sell out so fast, they sent out this email telling people to get in quick or you wouldn’t get it, then it didn’t sell out for days!
When you talked about the BH cosmetics colabs “there’s stuff” I laughed so loud 😂 so glad I found this channel. I love a good makeup roast

Spot on about the Indigo Ink palette. I was so excited for that given the cover art. But I can't stand it. As it's always a nightmare to try and get any palettes from Menagerie, I'm actually kind of happy they blew it because I feel zero pressure to pick that one up.
I honestly am really going to miss Becca. I love their blushes, highlighters, and illuminating primers. I wish there was more under the smashbox brand. Also, I looove the Milk skin tint that’s in that clicky pen but they always malfunction at some point that it ends up being a waste of money when I can’t get the foundation out.
The sigma and cinderella collection really makes me wanna empty my bank account 😂😂 the palette looks dark and lovely!

The Hourglass deep palette is definitely deep and this year it is in metal! Love that they moved away from plastic.

Not gonna lie, I kinda want the Bobbi Brown Monopoly palette, because it's pretty and I'd wear it and I love Monopoly. I'm not sure if it's coming to Australia, though (but if it does, I'll definitely buy it).
I think that fan is because she would teach you to use setting spray and fan your face to make it work better. I hope she makes more things that are maybe more interesting

look, I'm not going to lie, high end brands collaborating with weird properties (e.g. Monopoly) doesn't necessarily bother me if they're going to have really cool packaging and it's backed up by the brand's good formula, but most of the time the makeup or packaging isn't up to the brand's usual quality (cough cough Urban Decay)

I NEVER buy collaborations but that sigma colab has my attention!! I probably wouldn't even wear the colors but they did so good with the color story matching the movie that I love it!
I feel that from all the collabs, the Oden's eye was the best release in September. 💕
Conspiracy theory about why influencers who come out with brands never start with things that fit what they’re known for: they’re known for things that they hype up a lot and they either feel loyal to a brand (for example, Nikkie is known for talking about eye primer and for bold bright eyeshadow) or have deals with a brand (so for her case, P. Louise, Juvias Place, Beauty Bay) so they intentionally pick products to start with that aren’t those things
I don’t buy into conspiracy theories but this sounds totally plausible.
I think it's more likely because if they are known for a particular product and they don't make it better than other brands they rave about then they will disappoint their audience. So they try to raise money on other products while they take time to invest in what they really love.
Too many nostalgic makeup collaborations. The only two I actually liked were the beauty bay Disney and the makeup revolution corpse bride.
Beauty bay did two things right with the collection. (1) older movies focused without using princesses and (2) using colors pulled from the actual movie.
Makeup revolution corpse bride actually took color story inspiration from the movie with the cool tones (that random warm palette doesn't exist for me) and the outside packaging has some beautiful image.
I fucking hate this years hocus pocus collection. The packaging is too cutesy and the color story of the eyeshadows and super shocks have nothing to do with the movie inspiration. I would have bought the candle but colourpop only sold it in the US$99 set. Last year's collection while not an original color story was more true to the movie with the grungy/vampy colors and the red lipsticks.
I love the odens eye collab. Actual beauty creators, interesting colors and nice packaging.
The glamlite cocktail hour is hit and miss for me. I like the dirty martini palette and the chocolate martini palette but hate the wine and margarita palettes. That plastic wine bottle looks like what a person who drink exclusively boxed wines thinks a "fancy" bottle of wine should look like. Also the palette is more of a bluple color story with a pop of champagne and burgundy.
I think the Ink palette could keep the two beautiful blues and that inky gray, but should have had some gorgeous raspberry colors, a burnt red or two, and some more bluish greens. I mean, those oranges and yellows are cool AF... but they belong in a coral inspired palette.
A coral palette would make a lot more sense!

I passed on the CP x Hocus Pocus collab again.
If the candle and mirror were sold separately, I would have gotten it. I would have tried the berry and black lipstick, but they were sold out by time I got around to them.

Out of all the new things I only ordered the new Menagerie Indigo Ink and Odens Eye palettes. When I feel overwhelmed by all the releases I definitely stick to the same small indie brands with cute packaging and nice color stories. The Menagerie already came in the mail and the formula is really nice and improved from their former palettes!

I've got one of Sigma's original 12 pan palettes and I love its formula. I don't have any of its other products but I loved its eyeshadow formula. The idea that it's even better now is intriguing. I also think that Cinderella collection looks gorgeous but blues/purples are not my jam. But it's beautiful all the same.

Becca’s under eye corrector is legit, but I might prefer the one from Beautypie.. both are amazing, and work as a brightener and as a primer which is really essential under my 59 year old eyes. Keeps the area supple feeling, no dryness.
