Wow... you can actually hear Jason on this. I killed this album back in the day. What I don't get is this was recorded shortly before And Justice... and this rhythm guitar tone is so much beefier and ballsier. Sometimes low budget is better.
And you can hear the bass
it's been exposed, lars was a dick to jason back in the day. He told the mixer to drop the db on bass so low you can even hear it. mixer thought it was a joke, but lars insisted he was serious.
Hetfield said that AJFA was supposed to take the raw element of this EP and combine it with the epic-length songs of Puppets.
not just you can hear Jason but this is the loudest they mixed bass ever on any album

Have you ever heard some of the remixes of the black album, where people have either turned up the bass, or played bass with the album and mixed it back in? They were CRAZY to turn Newstead down. it's slammin.

Ah the memories of this EP... on cassette, and the good times in my friends 1984 Camaro 305 v8. This album and the Holley 660 4 barrel carb were the only music required lol.

This is what thrash metal should sound like, not over-produced, just raw and clear.

First time I heard this album is when I was ten and my older sister just bought it, I didn't listen to metal at the time, but she bought this and Peace Sells... But who's Buying on cassette and let me borrow them and I've been a fan of both ever since.

I've laughed for the last 34 years at the end of the $5.98 album.
I also had the $19.98 home video.
Still my favorite Metallica, right beside Killem All.
I walked into my local gas station....to buy gas. In spring 1987? (I was 17 ) And in the cassette tapes at the counter I spotted this! This was pre "And Justice" !
You couldn't buy this at the local record store at the time. Record/tape prices then were almost $10.00. Then this happened....at $5.98! Tallica was so far ahead of the game back then. Ha! Back in those days you were considered a nut case if you liked Metallica back then.......guess I was one of those nut cases back then!
Some places had the nerve to jack up the price. I think there was a sticker on it that said if the price was jacked up you should steal it LOL

Yes, definitely Metallica's cover of The Small Hours is probably the best song they ever recorded.
With that being said, I never realized how bad the drum footwork is in helpless, LOL
Lars was still only a few years out from his first drum lessons.

These sound like And Justice For All with regard to the mix, the drums, etc. (excluding the bass, of course). Lars sounds great on this.
I bet Lars was pissed at how audible Jason was on this, so he turned his bass all he way down for AJFA while nobody was paying attention.

KeithH02 - there are differences. it's too subtle to notice though. The vocals to me are the biggest difference. Guitar/bass/drums sound a bit more crisp. Nothing too deep though.
