Авто/Мото
I love it. The price is still just a bit much for me. I hope the forging rout makes it within reach for regular folks!
this is the first time im seeing these, holy mother of god, speachless
Love the engineering, I've always liked the concept of portal axles since being first exposed to them on the Unimogs.
That's exactly right! Ground clearance is king
Not to forget Volvo 303/306, MB Gelendeswagen and Steyr Puch ...... and some others.
Thank you for addressing the helical vs straight issue.
That jeep knuckle looks sick
my LX570 desperately needs portals!!!! It'd be crazy sick with the Portal lift with AHC (Automatic Height Control) too. lol
Definitely and seriously considering getting this portal setup for my 14 GX460. Already have 4" lift with JD Fab 4.5" LT with 35s. Will be amazing build with 74Weld Portal Axles and 38". Amazing engineering and weld machined components. Can't wait!!!
Excellent! Loved this. Particularly appreciated the explanation/discussion of stuff vs. droop regarding the Tacoma portals, the trade offs and ride quality implications. Thanks!
Man, these are going to be KILLER on the new Toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus GX Overtrail!
Another great informative video. Thanks for taking the time to explain in plain English what and how a portal is/works. If I build another bronco I’ll definitely get me a set. Thanks
This is so awesome! Can wait till you start adding older jeep cherokee xj's, grand cherokee's, fj62's. And newer stuff like Tesla, Rivian, Dodge, Ford, Chevy truck! Great job guys! This is definitely the future if lifted vehicles and will apply well the EVs as well. So pumped!
Looking forward to having these on my Tacoma! LFG 🤘
As a 3 time machinist school drop out, I gotta say...they look awesome! Look at that machining.
Excellent video!!! Thanks for the expanded explanation and technical description of your portals. I am planning on getting a set for a Diesel Gladiator if they ever start selling them again.
Glad it was helpful!
So much better than a lift kit. I super excited for when you make some for the electric trucks on the market that won’t need the idler/ reversing gears (eg VW type82 Kübelwagen). Smaller packaging, means it’s lighter less parts to wear and cheaper.
Dream upgrade, and it’ll be cheaper then going mid/long travel set up tbh 🤘😁🇨🇦
Very cool job working on this stuff.
Good video! I hope you build them soon for the F-150, so they can be used on Raptor, Braptor and regular trucks like my shorty.
Glad tl see such great product knowledge and desire to make it to the best of your ability. I hope i get to work with your team in the future.
I remember seeing portals available for the Nissan Patrol here in Australia, now I am planning for portals on my Gladiator later in the year, along with your brake upgrade package
I really hope you guys are able to make a forged version for the Jeeps, I just bought a 2023 392 and would love this instead of one tons and a 3.5" lift. As a 53 year old Rockcrawler who's built dozens or rigs this is hands down one of the most innovative products I have ever seen, really look forward to seeing what you guys come up with in the future!
They all look amazing. I understand why it cost what it does but a price point of around 15k for the commercial market might allow guys to sneak it past their wives.
I hear you and we are heading that direction. My goal is to push all of these to forgings. Forged parts will allow us to cut a lot of machine time out of them and get the price down. It’s all a process but we are committed to getting there
@@74weld Once people see these on the trail, sales will ramp. I'll have to save quite a while to afford at 20k. 100% understand current pricing, IMHO it's a good price for what they do. Appreciate the nuances of this design, such as limiting the lift so that it just allows appropriate larger tires and ground clearance. Hopefully economies of scale allow pricing to come down.
Questions:
How does the added width affect handling, lean & ride quality?
What is an optimum shock spring setup to bring out the best of these portals? (NC trails mostly)
When can I see some of these on a GX? Would love for reputable RUclipsrs to be able to test these for a few weeks to help get the word out.
As always, appreciate the frank details.
Yeah! I can hear it,
“Why do you need this honey”.
@@74weldthat is comment that makes a man feel good
Half the price of my entire jeep is hard to stomach, but also I’m not the market for these crazy engendered creations.
I think you have an amazing product. But I sure would like to see a detailed installation video. On the Bronco please and thank you.
Coming soon!
Looks incredible. Hoping you guys will do something for the earlier 96-04 Tacomas/4Runners at some point
Any idea on making silverado set up? Your videos are so good. Having a bullet proff set is awesome with how much testing you guys focus on, Bravo
Yes. It’s on the list
Portals are RAD! The problem with your Tacoma kit is using the stock rack and tie rods. That Race set up though!
We have a billet replacement rack for a Tacoma in the works. Patience
This stuff is so awesome. Quinn, if you're ever looking to prototype a setup for the Tundra/200-series, let me know. Been wheeling with Nick from Shoshone/Sasquatch and admiring your jeep from afar.
Ha! Definitely doing the Tundra/200. Probably end of the year. Tell big chief I said hi!
I can’t wait to win the lotto !
You and me both.
Those look so sharp!!!
Major step up from the VW Bus Gear Reduction Trans Axles.. Keep'em coming
Can't wait to see these on the LC250, would definitely love to see Central Inflation, I would totally pay for that.
Absolutely fantastic video. My question is can you discuss the leverage the portal adds at the axle tube and then your opinion on the the impact to the steering rack (Bronco) on IFS stuff. Thanks a ton!
I think the portal has a negative impact on the steering rack. Not gonna sugar coat it. I hear people say the same thing about the rear axle and while I agree we have not seen this to be a problem with Jeeps on 40’s w V8’s. With that being said, We run 42’s on Loren Healy’s portal Bronco FunRunner XL with our steering rack. We are also developing a billet replacement rack for the Tacoma so we plan to solve the taco steering next
Love the set up. Wished you would have talked more about seals my worries are are oil leaks and why such oil change frequently
you are adding a tremendous amount of unsprung weight to the suspension with the portals, wheels, and bigger tires. So, maybe not a lift kit but definitely beefier springs/shocks.
Great video!
I really appreciate you guys making really well engineered products. I hope the market accepts this product in abundance.
Any works on central tire inflation?
Love the innovation looking forward to when it hits affordability for much of the masses! Would like to know details of shocks to pair these with as I have the EClik system.
That would be a great setup on my PW. Keep the thuren suspension but gain that bit of clearance.
So since you are making parts for bronco have you looked into doing anything for the 2019+ ford ranger? Would the portals be similar enough to work?
the only thing lacking in the RANGER raptors drivetrain is ground clearance and wheel size. portals would fix both these issues without compromising the stock geometry we paid so much extra for.
FYI, we have a portal for the new Ranger. I also believe that the ranger raptor is built around the same chassis as the bronco but I need to get more details on this from Ford. To be clear, this is the 24 ranger. We will be opening orders for the Bronco stuff either this week or next.
@@74weld fantastic. My raptor is due for delivery in december. i hope to get it done pre rego as doing it after rego is a complicated and expensive process hear in a Australia, also it's only valid in the state of rego vs nationally compliant. i hope RHD vs LHD isn't an issue?
What do you think of Werewolf 4x4 portals with central tire inflation? They make portals for a lot of vehicle platforms. I just never see them on the rocks.
I think his stuff looks pretty decent. In my opinion it is too tall and too wide and I don’t like cast iron, but I have seen his videos and from what I can tell he knows what he is doing. Just a different product.
I’m confident the portal is reliable the only thing I’m concerned with is the torque added to the axle it’s not designed to have a large breaker bar twisting on it. But it’s off-roading so that’s how it is.
Portals reduce axle torque loads
@@timmo42 Maby a cv axle or drive shaft but no way a regular rear straight axle. It’s a beaker bar and will add load to certain joints depending.
@@jefferyboring4410 we’re talking about different things… a drop box or portal will reduce the torque load on the drive axle. The casings “might” experience increased mechanical loads resultant front changed geometry. This is why they mentioned semi vs full float.
@@timmo42 yep
Any chance you are working on a set up for the newer suburban's with the independent suspensions?
Man if only these existed for the 81 f150/bronco id buy em
Can you do a comparison with your competitors product and explain why/how yours are/would be the better option?
We would have to see one here in the states to do that. I have yet to ever put hands on a Tibus or Werewolf portal. I know they make them, but we just have never had the opportunity to see them in the wild
@@74weld I have also seen some out of Australia online, though not sure if they are rebranded or not.
@@74weldwhat about the portals in the DSTrac axles? They offer 1.2-1 D70s front and rear with hydro tabs and steering for ~ $23k
@@mattbrew11I don’t know much about the DSTrac stuff. I heard they were making them but then was told they pulled their website and weren’t. I don’t want to give wrong info, so I’ll just say I have not seen a set in the US to date. I’d love to do a comparison video and a panel discussing but I don’t know we can until the other ones make it to the US market. I did get to see the werewolf ones in person at overland expo on a G wagon and chatted with some guys about them. I’m biased but I will say if you get to put your hands on our stuff in person I feel you would share our same sentiment.
Hey Quinn, any thoughts on how much weight the portals add on unsprung weight for a bronco? Would you recommend gussets to the frame with the extra weight? Thanks
The entire tacoma outer weighs 56lbs. I would guess the factory weighs 25 maybe? Not sure on that. Regardless I would gusset the upper a arm on the frame. Check out what Exodus 4x4 recently did. He posted about it on IG
I have seen jeeps with the portals, and is my go to option, but haven't seen a video with factory rubicon axles, all I have seen is change to currie axles, so makes me think is needed to also change axle to get portals on the JLRU
We have tons of JL and JT platforms running stock axles and portals. We are doing an install this week with Mopar on a stock JT as part of onboarding as a Mopar supplier. Check out our IG for videos of stock Jeeps on portals
@@74weldhow is this going? Almost in with mopar?!?
How much to make a set for my 2024 Chevy 3500 ifs front and rear straight axle looking for a 6” drop
good day to you guys i just seen this video , it is now 1/2024. i was wondering if your portals could be made with a 1 ton free spin manual locking hub?
Portal axle on an Ineos Grenadier.
I would love to have a set on my 02 jeep grand Cherokee wj.
So bad ass
Also you should make a 1.5 ton GM axle package.
P.s.
Possibly a steel housing to account for weight?
Expedition 4x4 5500
(Again, just curious)
Thanks
Sincerely

Richmond Virginia
I have a 98 Mazda b4000 you make any ifs portal axles for the b4000 or Ford ranger?
The ones that are out there are probably still too new, but would like to see how and when to maintenance them.
Are there any differences between the Tacoma and 4runner portal and parts included in the package?
A few minor differences between the two kits
@@74weld Look forward to a video on that. Also, going to get one for my 2022 4runner TRD Off-Road (Lunar Rock) name MyT-Yoda. Glad I haven’t done any suspension work yet.
ive always wanted to make a set for my 99 silverado stepside
Since a portal allows for CTIS any future plans for this?
Yes, we plan to work with Teleflow on a system. Their stuff is proven in Dakar and is a very cool setup.
Maybe i missed it....do your jeep front portals have the option of axle disconnect hubs?
No, the very early models did. We went away from that with a design change. The new stuff is stronger and locking hubs equate to about a 1% fuel economy gain.
Jeep Portal, Can these front hubs be converted to free spin/locking? If so, do you recommend a kit or do you sell a kit?
No. We have gone away from a locking hub as our lower gear indexes into the unit bearing and everything spins together.
@@74weld Thank you.
Hi! What can you say about stub tooth gear?
What kind of shock valving change is required when bolting a portal axle onto an ifs? Are there off the shelf shocks tailored to that application, or is the change in weight insignificant compared to the change in weight of the wheel and tire?
We bolted on Fox performance series right out of the box and have not changed anything.
Any possibility to offer CTIS on these kits?
Yep, we are working with Teleflow. They have an amazing setup we plan to integrate into our system. It has no airlines at the wheel and is not constantly pressurized so if you ever lose a line the system does not bleed out. Very trick and proven in Dakar.
As far as I'm concerned all serious off road vehicles should come standard with portals
Would/ Could you put this on a 5500... (Obviously larger units)?
Sorry if inappropriate/ out-of-place...
Or not the specific market (just curious)
Expedition style off-roading 4x4
@ 16:45 That bearing pressed onto the plate is a stupid idea, I can take it off with my knowledge no worries, but you should've added a spigot ledge at the back side for removal so you can get the puller under (cow's c..t).
To the arm chair warrior brigade, yes I can remove the bearing for replacement and no I won't tell you how as it's industry secretes, but it would be far easier if it was made to use common tooling.
Sorry for being so stupid…wait, we added a relief to get a generic puller on it…ok I guess we are not totally dumb and maybe we have done this once or twice before😜
Will you spread these kits to fully independent suspension rigs? I'm thinking about the crossover/SUV market that has been booming recently and may not support a truck/jeep lifestyle. Do portals hurt fuel economy and how much if so?
I imagine drivetrain loss isn't great, but nobody talks about it
Very impressive.. Do you guys get any interest for HD trucks ..for example a Ram power wagon
So do one for the super 60 axel it has a very tight turning radius
We have them for a 60
You guys make some for Jeep TJ
Does that set can do with nissan patrol y60?
you made the comment that if you want to run the rubicon this is it, but don't you lose a large amount of flex with no additional lift or a small lift than a long arm lift with coilovers? I have a 2014 wrangler that I'm trying to decide how to set up the suspension and this is a very interesting option. The Rubicon and Holy Cross are my bucket list trails. Thanks for any more insight you can give me.
We loaned our 392 to Erik Miller a month ago on the Rubicon. The ARB compressor died 10 minutes into the trail and it was pouring rain. Erik drove the entire trail open diffs and almost never lifted a tire and never once had to think about pulling a winch line. The factory suspension worked just fine…seemed like a pretty good test
Ok ? I might just not be thinking clearly. If it re-gears a Tacoma to run a 36-37 if some one ran a 40” would it scale the same as if the truck went from say 30 to a 33 or 33.5 with no gear reduction?
It would be very close. Just divide the larger tire dia by the starting tire diameter to get the ratio. 40/37=1.08 and 33.5/30=1.16.
I’m a bit unsure of the unit bearings being a true full float? Would it have been possible for a traditional spindle and wheel bearings or is that just too limited for hubs, packaging etc?
A full float by definition is an axle assembly where the weight of the vehicle is carried by the hub and the axle shaft only sees torsion, and not weight. A unit bearing does just this.
Oil? How often do u change the oil? Is oil used?
Have you looked into building a set for the 80 series Land Cruiser?
What about the 200 series?
I’d love a set for my ‘17 200 - looking forward to that!
Are there any major differences with the 24 rubi 4xe that would make them incompatable?
I know they're changing from semi to full float on the stock axle, does that change the mount?
It does. We are working with Mopar to have a setup that will work with the 24 full float design
I would really love to see these on full sized trucks! I have a 2021 Tundra if you guys see this comment *wink wink*
would love to see this on a 94 4runner
Whats is the mininal wheel diameter to accomidate portal case inside the wheel ?
Is it possible to install more positive wheels to compensate a bit for the increased width ?
How much weight is added per wheel ?
We need a 17” wheel for packaging. We recommend a +25 offset wheel which most all wheel companies make. The portal adds about 30lbs per corner.
Thanks for very clear and simple explanations looking like a powertrain engineering course. I have 2 questions.
Diesel engines have less power but more torque. Are your portals suitable with medium duty diesels such as; Duramax V8 or Cummins inline-6?
Electric motors offer smoother torque, so alternating force stress on the bearings are less. But their harmonics have different frequency spectrum characteristics than internal combustion engines. Will these portals appliable with electrical vehicles in the future?
We have electric builds in the works. Diesel is fine, I see no issue with any powertrain I’ve looked at to date.
Can you make one's for 2017- 2022 Nissan Armada?
I notice oil change intervals are different between Jeep's portal and Tacoma's, 10,000 miles vs 3,000 miles. Why is there a huge difference despite the same gear set, same materials of portals? Glad to hear from you
3,000 on everything
Why
can yall design me a set of portals for my 2023 Jeep Compass Latitude? MP has a 2.0 turbo 8spd 4x4.
Have you considered build electric motors into your products? Imagine a electric off-road monster with quad motors and portal axles.😯
2021-2023 2.5L Crosstreks
Are you planning on making a portals for 2022 chevy colorado zr2?
Yes. It’s on schedule for development later this year
@@74weld awesome, I am looking forward to this item.
Make it for 3rd gen 4Runner 🏎️💨
👍🏻👍🏻
Great vid. Now I have a GX with a 2.5” lift on it already. Is that going to be a hindrance with adding a portal?
Nope. I have several guys who have purchased Tacoma portals and are also going to run lifts with them. Just lets you run a bigger tire
Will you make portals for suburban
You don’t have one for a 2011 qx56
Will the portal still work if I already have 5.13 gears installed and run a 37” tire on my Gladiator?
I would probably say you won’t be happy with the gearing. A 4:10 converts to a 5.0 That is what we would typically recommend
Anyway to get the price point to 8-10k
Yep…buy just front portals. Seriously though, we would love to see them around 16K but that requires some serious volume increases and moving everything to forgings. Even then, if you want cheap you need to move production overseas and that isn’t this product. We are proud to say we make it in 🇺🇸.
Are the Jeep Portals made for only the stock axle assembly or can they be made for 60’s ?
How much do they increase the track width ?
What offset rim is used for the Jeep ?
Can the Jeep Portals be made with 6 stud/lug ?
Why the fk would you want 6 lug wheels?
We can’t do 6 lug on Jeeps. We just make an 8 lug unit bearing for Jeep stuff
@@mattbrew11because 6 on 5.5 is the most common off road wheel in the world 🤔🤷♂️
@@74weldYou make a 6 lug for racing but you can't make one for Jeeps?? I'm curious as to why that is.
For Bronco, does your portal package address the current rear axle tube issue that would be amplified by the portal box - i.e. axle truss or other torque solution?? Looks like a solid product!! Also, any deals for packaging with the steering rack?
We won’t address the axle tube issue. I had a conversation with spicer about this a few months ago. They will be selling their cast iron tube very soon. You can also just buy the HD front diff and be done
@@74weld We’re talking about the rear axle issue, right? - the tubes breaking the spot weld and spinning the diff housing. Will there be a truss or something to counter this? Seems portals would exacerbate this?
Any plans for GM Portals in the future?
Absolutely. Looking at ZR2 this year
@@74weld are you looking at HD kits, be so much better than lift kits
do you think you will be able to have a set for the new full float rubicon rear axle?
Yes, they are in the works
Are the Portals available for a Ram TRX ? thx
