    Regarding the quality of these remastered tracks, I'm going to hold off on digging into the whole thing until we get a clearer picture. At the moment I'm just focusing on how cool this is. If it turns out these are lazy port jobs then sure, we'll talk about it.

    Personally, I think they held off on 8 DLC for the Expansion Pack of NSO. They wanted it as a selling point for the new online plan and waited until that was around to release it. It also fits with the idea that Nintendo is going to keep putting their DLC expansions on NSO for free, that’s the selling point of said Expansion Pack. It’s literally a Pack of Expansions.

      Makes sense. I wonder if they'll do something for Odyssey

    • @Kirlac
      @Kirlac 2 года назад +25

      I took it as the other way around. A lot of people still don't see the NSO expansion as worthwhile so Nintendo said "what games do we have that we can make some DLC for to include and draw people in?" I don't think they were planning MK8 DLC at all until recently. They may have been working on MK9, but it was always going to be for the next generation. It's likely that supply chain issues pushed the next gen switch (and MK9 with it) back to at least 2024 so this DLC drip-feed for the next 2 years helps alleviate both problems.

    • @BlueSparxLPs
      @BlueSparxLPs 2 года назад +8

      @@Kirlac That's simply not true. The courses look too far into development (even with many of them just being upscaled) to have just thrown this together as a backlash response. Game dev isn't that quick.

    • @DAndHGamer
      @DAndHGamer 2 года назад

      I think this also. Maybe they held it or even when they knew they were doing the Expansion Pass and needed things that could make it seem valuable they looked at their games and though Mario Kart sold like crazy and people like new tracks. Either way, I think it has way more to do with the Expansion Pass than it does with another console or Mario Kart 9, but I don't know either.

    • @edwheezer6231
      @edwheezer6231 2 года назад +8

      It's true that development takes a long time, but keep in mind that Nintendo also knew about the expansion pack long before they revealed it to the public.
      Actually, the idea of the Mario Kart DLC being developed FOR the expansion pack seems to line up. The simpler textures on the tracks they showcased would make development time faster, and the fact that it's being released in waves instead of all at once technically lets Nintendo add value now and finish the DLC later.
      I'm not saying that this is what happened (I also think that Arlo's theory makes a lot of sense), but it is interesting to think about at least.

      Nintendo doesn't tend to focus too much on anniversaries if they're not Super Mario. While i think they saved 9 like you said, i dont think they took the retro tracks from that game and ported them to 8 DX with the dlc.
    What they probably did was they saved 9 (fairly recently because 8 DX just doesn't stop selling), giving the dlc team not that much time to work on.
    Then, the dlc team decided (because of time issues) to take the mk tour versions of the tracks (faster to do, and takes less effort), polished them a bit, make some more tracks like Coconut Mall in the same style and called it a day.
    Properly why the tracks looks so bad in quality compared to the original tracks in deluxe.

      That would be a great addition! Although I do have my doubts due to the strange roster we already have I would hope that they redesign it so that certain characters fit under the same slot like the differently colored Yoshis and Shy Guys, which mainly applies to the several Marios and Peaches as well as the Koopalings so that they don't take up an entire row. Obviously previous characters should return like Funky and King Bob-omb but some new characters would be really cool to see as well.

    • @Liggliluff

      There's more than just fitting then into a kart and setting a weight. You must add animations, set up the adaptive animations which can't be easy. Set more than weight, which is speed, acceleration, grip and more. Record or take old voice lines and plan those out. Fix logo, colour scheme, and actually doing the model and texturing. It's less than for Smash, but it's still a lot of work.

      I do hope not too many are from tour mostly due to how mind numbingly basic they are since they were designed for phones. They will not translate well to console.
      Still I'm remaining optimistic. Doubling the games content alone is a pretty big deal, I think I can tolerate a slight visual drop and even then it's not like they look bad. I'd definitely rather play this choco mountain than the N64 version.

    I’m kinda torn on what to think about this DLC, on the one hand at $25 for the entire number of current Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tracks is a really good price point, but at the same time the disparity between the OG release and this second set of Mario Kart DLC on DLC feels way out of place. Graphics wise I don’t think it looks too bad but it’s incredibly glaring there’s a lack of most work going on in texturing for courses like Choco Mountain and Toad Circuit, and with it once you see it it’s very hard not to think about. I’d be hopeful they touch up the graphics at least a bit, but with just over a month until the first wave is released, I’m highly doubtful of a good overhaul. Nintendo gonna Nintendo I guess?

Of course it adds real value to the expansion pass; considering acnw and mk8 are among the top 5 selling games on switch, its the best way to add a great deal to the most amount of people. I figure the question raised 3 minutes in ("why did it take so long for this DLC to become a thing") was simple. Smash Ultimate is no longer their biggest hype machine, (unless they decide to do Fighter Pass 3 but with this news, that's unlikely), so now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the game that's going to get the constant update spotlight.
    Since the Switch's launch, the sole reason many people watched Nintendo Directs or paid attention to Nintendo during huge events was for news regarding Smash Ultimate, base game or DLC. This is the first time since 2017 that Nintendo doesn't have Smash Bros hype to fall back on, so they're doing Mario Kart hype now.
    I'm fully on board with it too. Sure, there's not going to be new tracks but Mario Kart does have a lot of iconic/nostalgic tracks throughout its history that people love. Due to how many Switch owners have Mario Kart 8, this is likely to keep the attention of most Switch owners.

    My biggest gripe with these new tracks is that since by the looks of it all of these are Tour quality and meant for mobile, there will be zero antigravity in this expansion, which makes me very sad considering it was the main gimmick of MK8, and I absolutely love how creative it allows the developers can be with track design. It’s sad to know that once this pack is done, only about a third of the tracks will feature what is basically the whole selling point of MK8. Also the render they used for the advertisement uses the antigravity karts, which is ironic considering none of the tracks they showed feature antigravity

So they changed tact, accepted that Tour was just seen as a spinoff that nobody really cared about, and shifted some of that support on to MK8, which is why most of the tracks we've seen in this DLC pack so far are tracks that already exist in Tour.

While it can be lonely single player, it still can be fun to go for high scores, it has a fun online mode, and best of all it’s easy pick up and play for anyone. It’s not like smash where you have to have a degree for every character in order to use them correctly. It’s a simple and addicting gameplay loop which makes it easy for anyone, even my dad, to play. It makes sense Nintendo is adding DLC instead of releasing a new game, because why stop now when the momentum is high? I look foreword to playing the remastered classics, especially Coconut mall, and I hope my other favorite, Toad’s turnpike comes soon.

In 2018 or 19 when it would have made more sense from a development standpoint there weren’t all of the ancillary factors. But now you have an app where someone is already doing work to rebuild older courses and make some new ones, you have a new membership thing that you can use DLC for the best-selling Switch game to push, and you know that the lifespan of the Switch is going to last a while longer. It makes more sense now than it would have back then.

    My theory is similar to Arlo’s, but with a small difference.
    They have been working on 9 for years, and had planned all along for it to be a launch title for the next console. But then that launch itself was delayed, because there’s the chip shortage and the Switch just keep selling anyway. So they figured, like us, that’s a long time to go without some mainline Mario Kart content, the main team keeps working on 9 to make it super polished, but then they took a smaller team to port retro courses for 8, so we’d have something at least. If that’s the case, it’s a win-win in my eyes.

    Ok so Arlo, the idea of this pack is better than getting a brand new mariokart game on switch in my opinion, when giving it a second thought. A new mariokart on switch would have to either stand out against mariokart 8, or it will be no different and just be different tracks for $60. The standout feature could end up controversial due to Nintendo’s need to re-invent the whee every time they make a game. For this DLC, it doubles the games content for the most part for less than half the price of the game. It’s better than getting a brand new, full priced game that isn’t different enough from the past game. This direction also doesn’t forsake newcomers to mariokart 8 deluxe, and it gives us who have had the game for 8 years, have a whole bunch of content of mariokart for us. I’d love a new Mariokart but I don’t see one happening till the next system.

    They should’ve released those racing tracks in 2017 (the year that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got released).

    They ported so many Wii U games to the Switch & probably assumed it would be a decent hit. 8 Deluxe sold so damn well that it only makes sense that it would be the consoles Mario Kart. Tour as well is being used like another installment. I want Pauline on a console Mario Kart but it’s gonna be a few years.

    (8:00) I think your hypothesis is incorrect simply based on the simple graphics. It's not tracks for a text game brought back to the current game. It's tracks from the mobile game brought over to the current game.

    Gonna add my two cents about it because this case resembles the one related to Mario Party.
    At first, when the second one was announced I felt let down. I mean, the idea behind the first one was good, the different dices were a nice idea, the games were different enough from the previous ones with the friends' mechanics, but the boards were awful, no imagination in them, no traps, no minigames - it was barren. That game needed a DLC, with good new boards. But Nintendo made the right decision in launching a new one since the previous one had the detachable joycon as a requirement and could not be properly used in Switch Lite, moreover, the install base wasn't as big, thus creating a DLC for the game would be a major risk.
    Mario Kart doesn't suffer from the same problem, they have a great installed base, and frequent players. So, I think that Mario Kart Tour wasn't the success they were expecting, and since they put some effort towards the game, using a different engine and creating new courses - instead of wasting that potential, they would try moving those features to a proper console game. Therefore they had two paths: adding as a DLC or Creating a New game. The second option would break the sales from Mario Kart 8, they would have to create a game with a new gimmick or idea that would be a good enough reason to sell for $60 and convince the MK8 players to purchase the new MK9.
    As MK8 Deluxe has a new DLC coming, they probably didn't come up with anything new and decided to add those courses, and some more, as a DLC. I loved the idea, this game is now the ultimate Mario Kart game and will probably have the best courses of the series. Whenever Nintendo decides to create a MK9 they will be free to come up with something completely new, as fans will always have MK8.

    My suspicion is that the Booster Pass was made specifically to make the Expansion Pass's price look better, odd for them to wait so long to release the DLC. Say it was originally Mario Kart 9, the gap between release of Mario Kart 7 and 8 was less than 3 years, say we apply the same thing after Mario Kart 9; 3 years after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would have been 2021; and if the tracks are to be finished development by 2023, it would be safe to say that the game would be finished by then too. That would be the largest gap between Mario Kart releases, a whole 6 years between Mario Kart releases.

      This is a really good theory, I agree it is likely tied to milking things and brushing problems to the side.

    im a long time fan of the series and am extremely excited for the Booster Course Pass DLC, although i do think that this was something to keep the game alive since Mario Kart X will happen in the next system in 2024 (also per Nintendo Mario Kart Tour is Mario Kart 9)
    Also a few factors for the delay in DLC, ARMS and ARMS 2 development along with COVID factor
