- "Hoist That Rag" is the second song from the album "Real Gone". Real Gone is the 15th studio album by Tom Waits, released October 3, 2004 in Europe, and October 5 in United States on the ANTI- label. The album was supported by the Real Gone Tour, playing sold out locations in North America and Europe in October and November 2004.
A remixed, remastered version of the album was released by ANTI- on November 22, 2017, with the remastering process personally overseen by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan.

i love it, i listen to "real gone" like five times a day, and this is an even better version. the latin vibe is so awesome, do you do you do you dig destruction? latino lovers often do
Unpopular opinion: I like both versions in different moods. They DO have very different feels to them.
For everyone saying the original mix was better, good for you. I first heard the horn remix when it surfaced on Limewire and Kazaa around 2004/2005. It was titled "Hoist That Rag- Spaghetti Western Mix." I think it came off a promo CD. It's basically the same as the 2017 remix, but with the album version intro. You can find it on RUclips by searching "Hoist That Rag Alternative Version."
So when this version came out a few years ago and everyone freaked out, I'd been hearing it for 12 years straight and to me it's the definitive, preferred version of this song. I was happy everyone was finally able to hear the one I'd been bumping in lowfi quality. The original album version is OK, but it feels like an unfinished demo to me. This is the way it was meant to be heard, according to Mr. Waits. It's the only Real Gone remix I think is better than the original album version. "Shake It" for example SUCKS in the remixed album.
Still love the original best... But this song is just so amazing.
Both versions do what they set out to. You don't like this one, buy the damn CD. Jeez.
I was waiting for that version that can be found on Spotify ... thank you.
Horn is louder than the guitar, this is a crime against humanity...
Awesome!!!
Well, I learned the trade from Piggy Knowles
Sing Sing Tommy Shay, boys
God used me as a hammer, boys
To beat his weary drum today
Hoist that rag!
Sun is up, the world is flat
Damn good address for a rat
The smell of blood, the drone of flies
You know what to do if the baby cries
Hoist that rag!
Well, we stick our fingers in the ground
Heave and turn the world around
Smoke is blacking out the sun
At night I pray and clean my gun
The cracked bell rings and the ghost bird sings
And the gods go begging here
So just open fire when you hit the shore
All is fair in love and war
Hoist that rag!
I am not complaining that there simply exists a remastered version, which I find awful bot could simply ignore. Problem is, that this s now the only version on spotify and replaced the old mix.
The comments really hate this? Just listen to the old version then it’s up.
But not on any streaming service. Thankfully I still have the lossless version I ripped from CD but it would be nice to be able to hear it when I'm walking or driving.
❤️🕊
En boucle ….
Ahh, the remastered, "sounds correct" version.
Waits and coke. I'll take mine neat.
I like the old version better.
I can see your point but I love how epic this version sounds like both are great in my mind
I love the trumpet in this tho
ok boomer
Forsure, the disembodied sound is much better than a bunch of warm horns
The O.G. is visceral. Skinned, scarred and bloody. Dripping with truth, lies and drunken stupor. This version is good. As a bonus track on a reissue? just fine. As a reimagining of history? sorry duder, I lived that original version.
No CD edition ?
I totally hate how the saxophone invades Marc Ribot's solo
Hahaha that's a trombone
@@devinyoung4832 Well, that. I can be sure that's not a Swordfish one.
Meh. It's on a separate audio channel, the guitar is perfectly present and audible. The trombone merely augments it. It brings more funk.
@@ChefZak That's the problem though. They're completely separated and mixed at the same volume. The guitar should be in the front and the horns accenting it in the back. Not "perfectly present" at all... muddled
@@smokelakes sounds like what the intended result was supposed to be. Out of all musicians and songwriters, Tom Waits is the most likely to create something "muddled" deliberately
i dont know if I dig this. I definitely like the original mix better. The horns really get in the way during the guitar solo. I know this is all just me opining, but there is my two cents.
There are just no horns in the original. It's jarring. I really don't like it. The spanish guitar was my favorite part of this, and now its all drowned out by horns..
Dan F totally feel the same about this. Blasted horns. Not a fan.
@@danf4984 I totally agree with you 1000000%👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💋💋💋💋💋
It's hard to choose. I knew the original first and resisted the re-mastered. Now that I've listened to them both numerous times, I think I have to get the re-mastered version a slight edge. Marc Ribot is the master on both.
WHAT IS THIS?
It's awesome is what this is. Not the same as the original but just as good in my opinion.
!!!!Turn your ears off ASAFP. and find the original
the original sounded like Waits was reaching into my chest to scrape my soul against my ribcage and this just sounds like, idk, a good song. it's fine and some bits are interesting and it's cool it's out there as an alternative but it doesn't feel like anything to me, even ignoring the horn it sounds artificial and awkward, like someone just threw each instrument together individually without caring about the sound as a whole instead of the fucked up raw mess of angst and emotion in the original mix
not that there's anything wrong like objectively with liking this version, i just think it's interesting how the original connects with me so much and this makes me feel nothing but disappointment. they're almost the same but somehow they're nothing alike
The horns are really ruining this song for me. I love the original. PLEASE don't wipe out the "un-remastered" versions. I can't find any of the "old" stuff on Spotify. Sad day.
Ouch, this feels like a tribute by a cover band. Half of what made toms style so great is the raw roughness in the sound especially in this song.
The guitar solo should have stayed alone as was and let the horn have its own solo. Sounds like a mashup or something. Too much at once.
Remastered?
Sounds all fucked up with added horns. Nope.
It's been remixed.
Nope.
Horrible.
