José Sarmiento Hinojosa He is a monster for sure, i have seen him about 15 times in various ensembles... always pushing things further. Try to see him when he does a residency stint as a Performer. The Zorn residences are always crazy and impressive.
He came to my town in a small theater that there's a movie history class held in. It was $12 to see him play along improv'd to a silent film. He was the score for the night. Insane.
was it a buster keaton/fatty arbuckle movie? if so, I saw the same thing, here in LA, outdoors, in beanbag chairs, FOR FREE!! all things marc ribot are ever stellar!! (free or not.)
Marc Ribot is quickly becoming my favorite guitar player. After years of listening to everything guitar, then slipping into a tom waits wormhole, it has narrowed things down to most creative and I'm thinking this takes the cake for me
Damn. I love how it's zero to "there goes Pluto in the rearview" from the first note. Skill and passion and experience gets you there with no windup. Great stuff.
Pure fire gold genius . Marc shreds space metal jazz from the beyond future and channels it thru his mind into his fingers onto that ragged ancient spaceship guitar.. holy moly, my music brain is blown away !!!
Wow Wow Wow!!! Always loved Ribot's playing but - Dang, this really captures his pure unadulterated expressiveness + genius: the Hendrix of avant-skronk! Brilliant!
this is every genius concept ever to have been improvised in a garage mixed into 25 minutes. Raw, excellent , passionate , can't think of a word to descibe this magnum opus of a performance.
Wow. I've seen this video more than 10 times. Each time I had a fantastic experience, tap my legs and shake my head. Love these guys from the first demo record. I think, the most important band in the 21st century for me. Thank you!
this is the first ive heard or seen these cats. annie clark recommended him HIGHLY. geeeeez......thanks Annie. holy shitoli..................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is great.
It took a little while after the initial WTF!? to bed in but I persisted and by the end I'm a fan. I'm not sure I could sit through an album but I'd be there for any live performance or quality video like this one. These guys are mesmerising to witness in person. This looks like such an engaging way to make music together... wish I had the chops to join in.
Just saw/heard Marc at a Como Lake Park Pavilion and it was an experience shared with nature. Conversation musically that caressed then tickled the senses. Soul filling vibes that are simply moving air. Music!!! Thank you for sharing this completely different arrangement.
Saw them in Tokyo...great....years earlier In Hartford Ct. there's a free fest. There's a two days of Free music... Sat. then Marc came up to me said are we on today? Marc you are o Sunday...guess he had to drive back to NY.
I saw him play at yoshi's oakland, probably ten yrs ago. It was a great show and i guess i was drunk because i needed to shake his hand. Somehow i dodged securityand got right to him. He was already sitting at a small table eating sushi. He looked up and said " i guess you suspect i have cocaine!.
This dude is playing that crazy on a jaguar with a vintage style bridge and making it work... this is the only time I’ve ever second guessed having bought 2 master bridges for my jazzmasters.
Best three slightly off musicians ever! Every one of them creating absolutely brilliant music. You cannot under estimate these artists. They push the boundaries more than a lot of people. Oh yes, then there is Mary Halvorson - who if you don't know is the absolute genius of guitar.. Take the simple heart beat and put it into a blender with a whole bunch of soul and you get this. Haiti, Cuba, Jazz, Punk, Anger, NY, drugs and I am thinking a whole lot of memories and love. BOOM! Ceramic Dog. 2020!
I don't know why I love his music. He's so grumpy and punk. He's got this enormous energy that other dudes like Nels Cline or Bill Friesell don't have.
Eh, I’m not so sure I agree with you on Nels Cline, though there’s no doubt that Marc has more of that punky energy. That said, the single time I saw Nels play live, I was mesmerized. He was an absolute savage, in ways that I was absolutely not expecting: contorting about with his guitar, in the smallish space he had, gear/pedals/amps/etc to one side, the other members of Wilco on the other, but still swinging about, playing behind his head, playing with his teeth, and so on.. He was the wildest person on stage, at a concert that spanned almost three hours, where nearly 30 songs were played. Only during the more acoustic hour or so, in the middle of the show (when I was essentially forced to sit, much to my chagrin, as everyone else was), was he more reserved. At the visceral peaks of that night, he was an absolute demon, and it made my brain/soul get off hard. That’s my experience, but sure, he’s not gonna be like that all the time. Maybe in jazz settings he’s much more reserved, or maybe that night was very atypical. All I know is he was definitely expelling a punk energy, but again, I generally agree with your overall statement regarding Marc. (And unfortunately I’ve not been fortunate enough to see Bill live, but certainly hope to eventually.) ✌️
Eternal respect for a guy that breaks a string on the first fucking song. Absolutely zero bullshit in the whole set. It's incredibly invigorating.
mantra3000 ...you know that shit !

José Sarmiento Hinojosa
He is a monster for sure, i have seen him about 15 times in various ensembles... always pushing things further.
Try to see him when he does a residency stint as a Performer. The Zorn residences are always crazy and impressive.
not underrated, no. Marc is maybe my biggest influence when it's about playing "percussive" guitar.
He came to my town in a small theater that there's a movie history class held in. It was $12 to see him play along improv'd to a silent film. He was the score for the night. Insane.
that sounds awesome!
He still does this for anyone interested. it's an experience, to be sure and still has the tiny price tag.
was it a buster keaton/fatty arbuckle movie? if so, I saw the same thing, here in LA, outdoors, in beanbag chairs, FOR FREE!! all things marc ribot are ever stellar!! (free or not.)
Nice
Marc is 100% dedicated to his art.
Never seen a person that looks like their instrument. Guy with the longhorn is killing it
Marc Ribot is quickly becoming my favorite guitar player. After years of listening to everything guitar, then slipping into a tom waits wormhole, it has narrowed things down to most creative and I'm thinking this takes the cake for me

I don't know why I love his music. He's so grumpy and punk. He's got this enormous energy that other dudes like Nels Cline or Bill Friesell don't have.
