hi Julie you videos are awesome i just started with publishing few months ago and yes i have my problems with marketing but i got me help and now i got every day few sales i just think about to open a channel to promote my books thank you for your ideas
I love this video!! I've noticed my own sakes spike when I reached within my circle and asked people to share. When they did, I found myself sitting beside a woman in the salon reading my book. It was amazing moment for me, because I was actually sharing my painful story and it helped others. Don't discount the influence of those right inside your circle.
My book as been on Amazon 2 months now, the name of my book is "Set Apart For His Glory" the book is about my life what I have been through and my walk with God.
This is great advice for Authors! I've just self-published a book about dealing with various bias related obstacles, ' Nuthology Pser 400 Bias Index: And the Secret Capsule Of Talents” I will definitely be taking these tips in account. Keep up the fantastic job Julie!
Thank you for your kind advice as one of those old authors used to the sound of a typewriter and distant cowbells, that scent of pines in spring in the air on the chilly balcony, and then chatting to your frozen perspiring agent who you watched walking up for tea. I had no idea of the dystopian age of youtube was so enticing. Best Regards from The Chocolate Mountain Chronicles Free Tv as I really was amused enough to let some of my films go on RUclips before 52 Love Letters from the Lake launches for Christmas. Really great to understand this internet from the Alps not the Amazon!
Great video! And thank you for saying book signings suck because they truly do and most authors won't admit it. I will do one or two with each book launch but only to make friends with the CRMs at Barnes & Noble and independents. (Their job is tough too!) And the most frustrating part is I am CONSTANTLY going to friends' book signings, buying their books, showing my support and the favor never seems to be reciprocated. I am on my 10th book now so it could be that friends don't understand that I struggle as much as they do. I try not to take it personally but it is one of the reasons why I hate book signings.
Such a great point!! I always make a point to buy and review my friends' books too and it's not always reciprocated either! You sound like a great friend. Congrats on getting to book #10! That's a big accomplishment. :)
Thank, you for your video. I recently bought some books on self publishing, but it is far more interesting watching and listening to a live, interactive person explain and discuss book promoting than just reading it from a rather boring book. You've got "personality" which books simply don't have. I just started selling my book, "Tiny, Part-Time, High Profit Businesses that can make you Rich", on Amazon.com. After listening to you, I realize that I have a lot to learn. But again, it is so much better listening and watching you discuss what you have found to be effective in promoting your book, compared to reading about that. Thank you. I'm now watching your other videos.
Wait a minute. You're a writer and would rather watch a VIDEO with tips for selling your self-published book rather than read a "rather boring book" about that topic. You're in the wrong business. I suggest you restyle yourself a screenwriter and produce videos rather than an author who writes printed words that appear in "rather boring books."
Hi Julie, you look so cute here! 👍🤗 Love all the tips - I do realize it's 2020 now, but your advice is solid and stands the test of time. Thank you again, and have a super week! Natalya

Thanks for the advise Julie. My wife Angel Rose just wrote and finished her book entitled "MEMOIRS OF A FORBIDDEN ROMANCE". She has both the paper back and tablet versions on Kindle Fire and IPad. All of our friends and family love the book, but we're not seeing any other sales outside of that.
Hi Miguel - I see she has reviews but one of the issues is the Kindle & Paperback aren't showing together so the reviews show separate ... this means the Kindle version only has one review (And more than 70% of your sales will be in the Kindle version so it's important this version have all the glowing reviews showing for it). There may be some other tweaks on Amazon that might help too. Have you watched this video? ruclips.net/video/-kOE7Q79JLs/видео.html Good luck!!
I'm just curious, why not just do your self publishing on amazon directly ,rather than go through create space or other's? do they not do the same thing?
Thanks, Julie. This was a really insightful video, and very "real." Sadly I have invested in the wrong places in the past, so most of what you say here aligns with my reality as well. Nice of you to put this out and set the record straight. :)
Sorry to hear you haven't had the best experience but I really do hope that you have found success with your book. And when you write your next one you're set up for success!
Thank you for information. I am a new author and I am looking for ways to promote my book. I just knew book signing is the way to go. Thanks for your honest and it good you step out on faith and did it
KDP (Createspace) offers advertising. They will put your book online, right in front of the big names and if you get a click, you get charged. You pick your budget on how much you want to pay per click. It helps get you a little attention and a few sales but you have to continuously put out books to ultimately gain an audience that way. I'm a new author but I have enough sense to know it will take patience and time. I'm on my 3rd book now.
Wrote my first Non-fiction book recently. Broke the topics down into ~150 youtube videos (probably more with another strategy) and each video is me talking about a different topic, with more information and a call to action to buy my book (either a landing page or the Amazon page). What do you think to this strategy? Would it be worth sending them to a landing page or directly to the amazon page?
Love this strategy. Way to take MASSIVE action. It's a good question ... and it's not an easy one to run a clean test on because you can't really know what clicks convert to book sales on Amazon from your videos alone. And if your landing page directs to Amazon you won't know what Amazon sales came from videos or the landing page). I have driven traffic to multiple places in my videos and promotions because I don't really know which one is the most effective ultimately BUT here's a few other thoughts: 1. If your landing page ALSO has a free chapter to download as an opt in or some other way to capture their email address to you can continue to promote your book and build a relationship that may be the best option ... IF your opt in converts well. 2. If your landing page has more compelling sales copy (book trailer ... more testimonials ... etc) than Amazon it may be more effective at selling your book so you will want to direct people there vs Amazon 3. If you're like me (not American with an audience that is across borders) sending to a landing page where people can then choose their favourite book seller may be better than a single link to Amazon.com where not everyone will buy (if you have Canadian readers they won't want to buy from Amazon.com most of the time as it's more costly and we can incur duty vs buying from Amazon.ca). Good luck!
Nantchev not sure what you mean by landing page. The amazon page itself should be enough. I too had videos on various topics which interested me and linked the book right at the end. But it is harder to cross link material which doesn't fit together. So my cooking videos with my short film script ebook.. didn't do much. But I noticed that people whose books tie in with the video topic will do well.
I am fighting cancer and have decided this week to use my ebook Strangers in the Night by Shreeta Shah which is on amazon kindle .. to help raise funds for alternative cancer treatment like high dose vitamin c.. the link to the book is. I need to figure out ways to promote this ebook. So thanks for your video to give me some ideas. And congratulations on your successful efforts on your own book.
shreeta shah you might want to watch the documentary "What the Health" available on netflix free right now. It is all about a dietary method to fight cancer and most other diseases. It is the answer you are looking for.
I am a self published author. I made an appearance on a morning TV show and will make an appearance on the local radio once my third book comes out in January. I did not hire anyone. I was able to do this myself. Talking at libraries sucked for me. Only 3-4 people showed up.
Thanks for the info Julie! I like that you shared honestly that the book signings aren't the best. We're working on releasing my self-published book next month and have been wondering the advantages of various promotions. Good video :)
I wish you much success with your launch. I just released my newest book this month ... finding summer a challenging time to get attention. You may want to consider launching in September ... unless your book is a juicy beach read in which case August could be perfect. All the best!
Thanks so much Julie! Congratulations on your newest book :) Good to know about summer being a challenging time. Definitely appreciate the advice. It's a non-fiction book entitled Radiant Purpose: Overcome Your Past, Know Your True Identity, & Open the Door to Your Future. The hope is that it will be a great help to people who need to move forward in their lives. Thank you again and much success to you!

I had a book signing for my book Dot to Dot to Dot: 88 Advanced Dot to Dot Puzzles with Extra Dots at the local Coles in the mall. It's true, all but two of the people who came by were strangers, despite all the likes I got on Facebook. That said, I sold 18 copies which is pretty good, I think, for a kind of dead mall in a small town. There had been no press to promote it either. But, I think my success came from it being an activity book, because .i was able to hand a sample and a pen to people to try it right then and there. Parents watching their children engage with the puzzle convinced many to buy. Also, I'm a teacher and have a background in public speaking and I also sell my books on the craft circuit, so I was able to engage easily with customers and their kids. I know many authors sit at their table and hope someone will come over. Thanks for the video.
What you guys think about free offer for 3- 5 days after book launch? My Novel " You were on my mind" claimed #1 position for 3 days in a row but I didn't make any money as it was free book. Great tips, much appreciated!
Congrats! I don't do any work with fiction but my recommendation for non-fiction authors is to never price at free (but, again, the strategies are different).
Brilliant video. I am a new follower and find your channel very interesting. This helped me a lot. I have just started my channel on youtube which I feel might help with sharing my books! Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Welcome Dee's World! Thank you so much for joining the community and saying hello. RUclips is a great way to promote books - I actually have 3 videos coming in November on the subject! And, if you haven't already, I highly recommend you check out our free resources at BookLaunchers.com and grab our free guide to plan and write a great book www.booklaunchers.com/7steps or promote a book here: www.booklaunchers.com/gameplan
I see it's a childrens book. It's very cool! Check out www.booklaunchers.com/gameplan - see if you can incorporate any of those tips into your marketing.
Twitter can be useful but is very time consuming and in the end not necessarily the most fruitful way to spend your time. Book trailers are worthwhile to peak interest in the story. My ebook was created a long time ago. Over 6 years ago. And I have recently only revisited it this week as the idea popped into my head that I could do some fundraising for health treatment that I need. But promotion is always the hardest part. But thanks once again for your video.
Great video. Thank you for being honest about book signings. I've been researching all day and wondering. . . .why do authors DO THIS? I'm going to explore other routes!
I wrote, "A cat named Steve and a Dog named Doug", put it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble with promotions on social media and still no sales. How is this possible? If nobody reads or buys the book, how is it determined if the book is good or not?
Let's chat about this on our next live. THIS SATURDAY - our next Deep Dive is our Author Showcase where you’re going to meet four Book Launchers authors. You can hear what worked and didn’t work, and ask them questions to help you in your author journey. It’s happening on April 20th at 10am PST. The link is at: www.booklaunchers.com/deepdive

That's such a good question ... a good topic for another video perhaps. I had a similar issue with my second book. My first book was a real estate investing book. My second was a book on branding and building your personal image. What I did was try to find some commonality .... what were some threads that were in the second book that would appeal to the readers of the first book. If you can find some way to appeal to the audience with the book that still recognizes their interest in the blog or book that they are readers of. It's not always possible, but there may be a way.
I have a book on amazon which i dnt think sold a copy, I'm in the Caribbean and I don't know how it works in terms of how far up the list my book is on but i'd love to get some help from you thanks.
How did you publish your book? Did you use CreateSpace? Did you set up your Amazon Author Page? Have you done the 5 things I outline here: ruclips.net/video/-kOE7Q79JLs/видео.html ?
wolf Hi! I did a mini book launch in the local library. I gave a short 30 minute talk followed by Q&A and then sold some books at the back. The library bought two copies for their collection as well. It was fun and I met some great people. The library here did a great job of marketing and there were probably 25 people there which wasn't too bad. I thought it was a great thing for my local community. I've heard that some of the bigger city libraries require you to book it well in advance but some have even bigger and better events so it will depend on the library. Contact them and see who is in charge of events.
At first it takes a lot of work contacting media and conferences to pitch yourself. Once you are getting out there already, those invites will usually start to come in. Speaking usually starts local and organically grows from there ... events you already attend are the best way to start at first. They know you and will likely put you in front of their audience. From there you may get more invites or you'll at least have a track record to begin pitching yourself onto bigger stages. For TV and Radio, it's a TON of work to get attention at first unless you have a really juicy / relevant topic that you can use to newsjack (tag onto something already happening and headlining)... you will send 10 - 20 pitches to get one until you start to figure out what works. It's the main reason why I now have a PR/Marketing team for our clients in-house at Book Launchers - it's a lot to do on your own. And if you haven't smartly crafted a book topic that makes this easier it's even more work. It's doable but takes patience, perseverance, and flexibility. I'm not trying to discourage you, merely let you know what you have to do so you keep going after the first 5 ignores and first 5 rejections. I have another video on what to do when you get media. ruclips.net/video/K6Q-tXiXSxA/видео.html
Thank you for this video. I created my ebook Strangers in the Night. By Shreeta Shah. A short film script and thriller. Available on amazon kindle. Promoted via Twitter and book trailer. But getting more people on board is key. Talks is a fabulous idea. Hadn't thought of that.
+Living “Godson” Freeman What do you mean "make use of"? Did you pay for advertising or submit a story? I am not that familiar with them but would love to hear more. Thanks!
Would RUclips videos qualify under speaking? I am getting involved in a group in my area to do a talk. But, I've been doing videos for a few years now.
Hi. Not really - the big benefit of physically speaking is the opportunity to sell your books at the back of the room (or, in some cases event organizers will purchase a copy of my book for each attendee). It's a great way to sell 20 - 200 books in just an hour or two. Videos don't have the same kind of impact when it comes to book sales. You watched my video (maybe several) but have you purchased either of my books, More than Cashflow or The New Brand You? If you saw me speak though the chances that you'd buy one of the books (or both) is MUCH higher for a variety of reasons. Good luck with your talk.
Julie Broad julie, good video, what kind of events could I speak at to sell a comic style book? how do I get booked? I like public speaking so should be ok
Hi Tone Hunter - who is your target market for your comic style book? I'd find events where these folks are most likely to be hanging out ... and interested in hearing about your story. Plus ...participating in comic events would be really useful too! Good luck.
A friend had a book signing this month August 2023. she sold over 600 books. It all depends on how many friends you have. And outside of our click she is not famous not well known.
I'm a self published author. I once found a website that claims (for a fee) they'll promote any self-published book. I haven't tested them yet because I'm still writing book #3 of my 10 part series "A GODDESS AMONST US" by Robert Laster availible now via: your Amazon app. (shameless Plug). I just truly believe woman are gods. Their feminine principle is a piece of divinity that should be referenced and treasured. My speechless character brings this premise home.
Great video, some people however have day jobs and can't afford to write all the time let along pen blogs. I think in layman's terms, writing blogs is for working writers only. The average writer who needs to supplement their life with a day to day job rarely has time to spend writing blogs. Doesn't mean they aren't necessary. Personally I think blogs are boring, no one really cares what you have to say and well, blogs are a dime a dozen these days.
I highly recommend you make sure you've done these 5 things: booklaunchers.com/published-on-amazon/ They are free to do and will help you a little more. Plus ... you have to create some momentum for your book or it will never be shown to potential buyers. Try to do some sort of a book event or a relaunch ... it will help a lot.
I'm not familiar with your work, Julie, and I didn't read all the comments, but there was no distinction between fiction and nonfiction in this short video.
Walter Last Good point - I did a whole series of videos on this and probably forgot to mention it in this one! I write non-fiction. That said - I know someone who used pretty much the same process to sell their fiction book as well. He did fewer speaking engagements but everything else was a big part of selling his book too. Are you writing fiction or non-fiction?
Julie Broad My first fiction novel is live on Amazon as of July 5th, in the Kindle version. Unfortunately, my formatter made a few mistakes and it will prevent the print version from being live for a few more weeks. The Kindle version will also be repaired. It's called "To Slay the Lonesome Night" and the "peek inside" option is activated. The formatting mistakes did not occur in the first "peek inside" chapter. I will mention one marketing trick that I"ve already used. The car features a 1968 Camaro and I contacted the national American Camaro Association and got an endorsement from its president. He recently mentioned it to 600 of his members. Of course, plenty of follow up needs to be done. But I started there. I'll look for your other videos.

It's a good question ... and it's not an easy one to run a clean test on because you can't really know what clicks convert to book sales on Amazon from your videos alone. And if your landing page directs to Amazon you won't know what Amazon sales came from videos or the landing page). I have driven traffic to multiple places in my videos and promotions because I don't really know which one is the most effective ultimately BUT here's a few other thoughts:
1. If your landing page ALSO has a free chapter to download as an opt in or some other way to capture their email address to you can continue to promote your book and build a relationship that may be the best option ... IF your opt in converts well.
2. If your landing page has more compelling sales copy (book trailer ... more testimonials ... etc) than Amazon it may be more effective at selling your book so you will want to direct people there vs Amazon
Good luck!
Did you try selling your books directly from your RUclips videos? If so, was it effective?
Nantchev not sure what you mean by landing page. The amazon page itself should be enough. I too had videos on various topics which interested me and linked the book right at the end. But it is harder to cross link material which doesn't fit together. So my cooking videos with my short film script ebook.. didn't do much. But I noticed that people whose books tie in with the video topic will do well.
john r. It works, but need following.
Yea book signings were like that for me!
Hi Julie, awesome video!
What's the url for your best selling book you cited?
Thx
April Braswell Thanks for asking! :) All the details are here: morethancashflow.com/
To order in the US: tinyurl.com/mketfcu
6:10 - Hilarious - Thank for this video. Still super helpful 5 years later.
:) Thank you!! And yes, 5 years later it's all still true! There really are no secret formulas in book marketing.
I love watching your videos thanks I appreciate it

I'm getting ready to do a book signing at my church with a lot of family. #MrsDonna
I have a Facebook page, Twitter and work hard to promote my Lady Baldrick books available on Amazon. Great children's books with a positive message in each story.
thanks for this information.
You're welcome. Thank you so much for saying hello!

Great info, well presented. Thank you!
I liked your humour. Also, what you said pointwise, was very helpful. Thanks 👍
Great! All the best with your book.
Such a great video! Thank you so much!
Such an Amazing video!! Yes!!
Thank you!
Thank you for these tips. I've just self-published a health and wellbeing book. I'm promoting non-stop! Back to work for me!
Hey where can i buy the book? Sounds interesting!
Olle med skills Hi, thank you. It’s on amazon and Kindle. Titled: The Fountain of Youth by W.M.Aslam. Appreciate your support!
Thanks, Julie. That was helpful. I just got my first book up on Amazon! Woot!
Congrats! All the best.
Is it doing well?
This is very informative . Thank you
Brilliant video.
If you have a specific question you want to be answered, you can ask at any time. I just might shoot a video to help you out. And, if you haven't already, I highly recommend you check out our free resources at BookLaunchers.com and grab our free guide to plan and write a great book www.booklaunchers.com/7steps or promote a book here: www.booklaunchers.com/gameplan
@@BookLaunchers Thanks for the reply and I will definitely check out the free resources at your website.
I've had the hardest time marketing my book. Under Our Roof- By Rebecca Stanton It's been 2 months since I published through Amazon's KDP.
Thank you...
Great tips of selling books Julie. If you can't self publish successfully these days, no real publishers will publish you anyway.
It's so true ... and marketing is your responsibility whether you have a traditional publisher or you're self-published.
Thanks 😊 resources are a 🎁
How about mobile selling your book to your targeted readers. Will it work?
AWESOME suggestions!!!
Thank you for this!
Thanks Julie this will help me focus on selling my new book Miles Walker's ARTXTRA
Julie Broad , helpful thanks
Thanks, good info.
Thanks Julie very good information!
+Walking Through The Storm You're welcome!
My book writing career has led too an film agent out of hollywood

I have several blogs, but they aren't related to the topic of my first novel. How can I use that audience to promote my book?
That's such a good question ... a good topic for another video perhaps. I had a similar issue with my second book. My first book was a real estate investing book. My second was a book on branding and building your personal image. What I did was try to find some commonality .... what were some threads that were in the second book that would appeal to the readers of the first book. If you can find some way to appeal to the audience with the book that still recognizes their interest in the blog or book that they are readers of. It's not always possible, but there may be a way.
Thanks, your lectures are important, Yes, I have an idea, I write a book on the Iraqi Culture.
Great advice thank you 😊
I have a book on amazon which i dnt think sold a copy, I'm in the Caribbean and I don't know how it works in terms of how far up the list my book is on but i'd love to get some help from you thanks.
How did you publish your book? Did you use CreateSpace? Did you set up your Amazon Author Page? Have you done the 5 things I outline here: ruclips.net/video/-kOE7Q79JLs/видео.html ?
Do you think it would be a good idea to have a book signing at a library?
Is this for both non fiction and fiction books?
We focus on non-fiction but a lot of the fiction authors that watch the channel say that all these tips can apply to both.
How do you get invites to speak or do radio!?
How should I sell the book online or physical copies
Both!
@@BookLaunchers ok thx
Great input!
Thank you for this video. I created my ebook Strangers in the Night. By Shreeta Shah. A short film script and thriller. Available on amazon kindle. Promoted via Twitter and book trailer. But getting more people on board is key. Talks is a fabulous idea. Hadn't thought of that.
Make use of publisher weekly. Have you read the book Too Many Criminals? It was on publishers weekly and great read.
+Living “Godson” Freeman What do you mean "make use of"? Did you pay for advertising or submit a story? I am not that familiar with them but would love to hear more. Thanks!
Was done via my publisher as package but I believe you pay something. Check their site or call.
Thank you !!
How hilarious would it be if Malcolm Gladwell himself, somehow, stumbles upon this video!
:) That would be REALLY funny but I'm pretty sure he's not searching around RUclips looking for self-publishing tips.
That's incredible :)
Awesome Advice. Thank You Julie. (I thought I'll arrange book signings - not anymore) ;-)
Do one ... just to get the photo op ... and once you've done one you'll never feel like doing another. ;)
Sorry message cut off I will follow you for #2
great info
I have thought about doing a scavenger hunt that would start at our local library.
Great video!
Great advice.
Excellent-----V. informative
Thank you!
Nice info
Great video, some people however have day jobs and can't afford to write all the time let along pen blogs. I think in layman's terms, writing blogs is for working writers only. The average writer who needs to supplement their life with a day to day job rarely has time to spend writing blogs. Doesn't mean they aren't necessary. Personally I think blogs are boring, no one really cares what you have to say and well, blogs are a dime a dozen these days.
My book the future assassin as been on kindle since September. So far I've sold 3 copies. So I'm basically selling one every month.
I highly recommend you make sure you've done these 5 things: booklaunchers.com/published-on-amazon/
They are free to do and will help you a little more. Plus ... you have to create some momentum for your book or it will never be shown to potential buyers. Try to do some sort of a book event or a relaunch ... it will help a lot.
Book Launchers thanks I'll look into it 😊👍
I'm not familiar with your work, Julie, and I didn't read all the comments, but there was no distinction between fiction and nonfiction in this short video.
Walter Last Smart! Great tip. Good luck with your book.
