Honestly, the more I feel like a book is trying to sell itself to me, the less likely I am to actually get it. Books that are just what they are and don't yell at me to give them my money? Those are the books I'll buy. Because they're comfortable being themselves and they don't feel the need to put on a show just to impress random strangers. Books are like people in that way.
Janeyanna: What do you mean exactly? Are you talking about ads or the book itself? With the book's pitch, are you trying to stay away from sensational language like, "This story is unbelievable, the most amazing plot twist you've ever seen?"
I don’t believe Julie is saying to be fake, but to put the most important content on the back cover. The way it’s worded is so important. She’s an expert with a humble heart and I trust her ability to do my back cover.
@@dadestarmysteries255 I'm talking about flashy books that use the cover for more than just title, image, blurb. I like understatement and confidence. When a book looks flashy it gives me a feeling like the author trusts neither their own story nor their readership, and that's never a good sign.
@@angellipsbyannhaskin8623 Being flashy doesn't equal being fake. It just means being loud and yelling what you could just as well say quietly. Flashiness feels like insecurity to me and why would I read a book by an author who doesn't trust their own story, and doesn't trust me to look at quiet things.

Thanks for the very helpful tips. Did you end up doing a video about logos and bar codes, or more specifically about setting up your own publishing company? I'd be interested to watch that as I'm not sure what I would specifically call that company, especially if it isn't publishing anything else except for that single book. Without knowledge of what to do there, that could potentially hinder the whole self-publishing process when it gets to that particular stage.
Yes I have filmed the video but it's not out yet. Now that we're releasing videos every Tuesday and Friday I think it will be out before the end of January. Is that soon enough? I'll publish it as soon as it's back from the editor.

Hi Anne - well, a few reasons. The most important reason is that booksellers want the machine-readable version of the ISBN number. The second is that having that bar code on the back of your book makes it look more professional and if you have your own ISBN number why not take that small extra step to make your book look as professional as possible?

I've written my first novel and am now concerned with two problems. #1. I don't have the money to pay an expensive professional editor, and #2. I have no "brilliant testimonials and endorsements". The closest I have is a couple of local published writers that have read it. Suggestions?
You could try crowd sourcing the edit ... have a bunch of people edit, put them all together in word, and then go through the edits that way. For novels the testimonials may be less important to start out with but our specialty and my experience is all with non-fction.
It's not a no-no. We do it for many of our books. It's just a consideration as to whether the space can be used for other things or if your headshot and bio are really going to help sell the book. In some cases it will help!
