    This video makes me miss my Ruger Mini Thirty. It was my first firearm, and it came with me back into the disaster zone after Hurricane Katrina. I am sorry I ever sold it, but hard times came and I had to make some hard decisions.
    This rifle /will/ be in my inventory, one day.

    As far as I know, the logo on the magazines was done for a specific reason. It is because the .300blk is based off the .223 casing witch is also the most popular cal. of the Mini.
    So the magazines are marked to help make sure that if you have both Mini's, that you dont accidently feed .300 black out into a .223 mini and create a dangerous situation.

      Maybe you haven't seen the effect of a rifle blowing up in your face as you pull the trigger... every other gun channel has suggested finding a way to.identify your magazines to keep this from happening....in this case River did it for you. If you don't care for it, then Wal-Mart has flat black paint for $1.00 a can. I still give Ruger their props for looking out for their customers.... It's a good idea for the masses to help save lives, pain and suffering and a few hundred bucks over a simple mistake. If you don't like it, you change it....

    • @MrHub929
      @MrHub929 9 лет назад

      Check InfiniteGrims Video and try again.....the .300 black did load and it pushed the bullet bAck into the case. It also did not fully support when it closed but the hammer did strike....potentially a bad combo...

    Great video that was very unbiased and to the point. That being said I think it's worth mentioning that for restricted states like California this gun is just about perfect. Instead of having a neutered AR15 they can get an out of the box rifle that's ready to run. For the rest of the country though I think there are better options in that price range and caliber.

    That suppression is actually pretty impressive. Especially considering your mic is RIGHT next to the rifle and it's still about as loud as the "ping" off the target. Very nice.

    I really wish that Ruger would realize that their rifles aren't exactly competitive at their listed price. I'd pick up a Ruger Mini-14, 30, or 300 for 500-600 any day of the week, but for over 1000 MSRP on average? No thanks, I'll get a top of the line AK or a high-end AR at that price instead.

      Jeremiah P Yep, I saw one this week for 749,.. at Wallyworld, but still that's more than they should be. I got a really good deal on mine in 2012 from a local shop,.. I don't know it was marked wrong or not but they gave me a great deal at 549 +tax(new) on the 5847 Tactical. Now that's about what they should run... that was right before "The Fear" of 2013...

    Great overview video - lots of information conveyed in an easy-to-listen-to delivery. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I have two Mini-14s, both in .223, and I like them both quite a bit. They come out every time my AR's make a trip to the range. I'll have to try out the .300 Blackout round.

  • @NormanMatchem

    With a drop of research, it looks like 125gr .300 Blackout from a 16" barrel will deliver about 2200 ft/s, 125gr 8mm Kurz from a 16.5" barrel will provide 2250 ft/s, and 123gr 7.62x39 from a 16.3" barrel will give about 2400 ft/s. Seems somewhat comparable to the differences in Mk.VII Ball .303 British, M2 Ball .30-06, and basic infantry WWII 8mm Mauser if you were to pop the bullets out and replace them will those of similar weight, and fire them from barrels of similar length (in this case 24-25"). If you put a roughly 174gr bullet in all three, they'd give around 2450, 2600, and 2700 ft/s respectively for the Military .303, .30-06, and 8mm. They're like steps on a ladder.
    That being said, they're only small steps. 100 ft/s isn't exactly something worth writing home about. It might be able to deliver SLIGHTLY better accuracy and transfer SLIGHTLY more energy, but the difference would likely be miniscule. 200 ft/s difference with roughly the same bullet size/weight? That might be more noticeable. Perhaps that's a reason why that .300 Blackout is giving somewhat poor groupings; it's a weaker round than 7.62x39. Though .303 British isn't terribly weaker than 8mm Mauser; impressive accuracy can be had with a No.4 Lee Enfield what with its thick floating barrel and long radius aperture sights. Those are pretty big advantages compared to a Kar98k however, just to squeeze out similar results.
    I wonder how a Mini 14 with supersonic .300 would compare to a mini 30 with the same barrel length/thickness in 7.62x39... that seems like an interesting experiment...

    The Mini-14 is available in both .223/5.56mm and in .300 Blk and the same magazine can be used for both, so if someone has both rifles, having the magazines differentiated is a good idea if they keep magazines loaded for both weapons.
    I have ARs in .300 Blk and in .223 Wylde, so I masked off and painted a gray stripe around the mags I've dedicated to .300 so they can be readily identified. The stripes are not nearly as visible from a distance as the printing on your magazines.

    I now understand what the writer meant regarding 762x39 and .45acp. I should have read more. Good suppresor. And, of course this fella knows the term suppressor is correct, but silencer is accepted slang. This cartridge is great, and this was a good review. It was good of him to shoot steel with a can to demo how well it works. And good he did not edit out the bolt not reseating after he peaked to check the chamber, and a full seating of the mag allowed the cartridge to reseat in the chamber.

  • @811brian

    One more thing, Would love to see a video of this rifle with the folding stock using the suppressor with heavy grain and tracking through a building, hallway, roams etc. I think stealth close combat is the purpose for the subsonic use but still able to shoot 300 yards fairly well with the supersonic ammo.

  • @mattsutphin5322
    @mattsutphin5322 9 лет назад +19

    Hi James, I know it has been some time since this video was made, but I would like to give a suggestion. If you are testing silenced weapons (especially subsonic) it would be nice if you weren't shooting at a steel plate. It really makes it hard to determine how loud the gun is, and in any practical application the only noise will be coming from the weapon not the target.
    Not to say this video isn't great though.

      +Matt Sutphin Hey Matt, thanks for the comment. I didn't think it was *that* bad when I did it for this video, but it was dumb as shit when I did it for the SA XD and KelTec Sub2000 videos, being so close to the target. So your point is well taken. Thanks for watching. - James

    Ive actually heard its better to have a DI gun instead for silencers because PD guns are louder. Apparently the piston on a piston driven gun makes a pop.

    • @TMS5100
      @TMS5100 9 лет назад +4

      Gen Scinmore the gases in a piston gun are vented direct to atmosphere at much higher pressure, which makes it louder.

    • @EricKPoorManPrepper
      @EricKPoorManPrepper 9 лет назад +1

      Gen Scinmore You may know this but a lot of people think suppressed guns are super quiet ,.. they're a lot quieter but not to the point some people think... they'll still make a pop unless its a .22 ,..those are quiet

    • @GenScinmore
      @GenScinmore 9 лет назад

      Eric K that's not true. a subsonic .300blkout on an AR platform is like a airsoft gun. look up some other vids and you'll know what I mean. Military arms channel has a good one.

    • @EricKPoorManPrepper
      @EricKPoorManPrepper 9 лет назад

      Gen Scinmore Not sayin a piston isnt a little louder however ,Im not saying they are very loud at all just louder than most people think. have you ever heard one in real life,..? It could just be the suppressor I was using when I shot one,..(it wasn't mine)... but the vids can be deceiving as there is a muting action on the mics. sometimes, .Tims mic on MAC has a muting action on the mic... I asked... They're still relatively quiet, but not as quiet as the vid sometimes makes it seem. Thats all Im saying... some others may not mute the mic,... it'll still be like a hard hand clapping loudness,...22s are the only sub suppressed guns that are as quite as a air rifle trust me. The action alone will be louder than that. Go let you ARs bolt slam home and see how loud that is,.. thats what youll hear a long with a sound about like a hand clap

    • @GenScinmore
      @GenScinmore 9 лет назад

      Eric K its not some magic theory. and you would know that letting an action close when it chambers a round is not nearly as loud as letting it close on empty. again, your wrong, the De Lisle carbine is easily the quietest suppressed rifle ever created and its not a .22. under sub sonic the weight and diameter of the bullet have little to no effect on the report of the rifle. what matters is the can on the rifle, the powder charge/type, and yes the action. but to complain about an ar style rifle being loud chambering is very biased. gee maybe a piston driven gun does the same thing because its an slr IMAGINE THAT. all im saying is given that a piston creates a pop, will make it louder than a DI gun.

    Hi, I know my comments are late but I'm new to rifles and for the last 2 weeks I've been neck cramping deep on the web looking at semi auto rifles in 5.56 and 308. I have to tell you I've been completely overwhelmed with information, variety, after market parts, etc. I literally have 50+ favorite folders trying to organize things from pistols, shotguns, AR-15's, 308's, ammunition, pricing comparisons, and it has gotten to the point of making me ill. I'm looking to buy 5 guns for my family and myself and this video imo has been in the top 20 of literally hundreds I've watched and number 1 for the Ruger mini 14 300 blackout videos I've found so far. I would like to hear the higher grain bullets hitting something like wood or a galloon of water to see how quiet it really is. My only questions before I put this on my buy list for the Sept 10 Gun show here in AZ I=are 1) how expensive and hard to find is the 300 blackout cartridge. 2). When firing the heavy grain bullet at subsonic speeds is the amount of damage equivalent to that of a high caliber pistol, 3) can you fire 5.56 in this rifle or will it blow up in your face, from what I understand its if the 300 blackout cartridge is put in a normal mini 14 that was made for chambering 5.56 it can or will blow up in your face. If this rife can fire the 5.56 then I think it should dominate the market. 4)I forgot my last question... See what I mean....I'm going nuts over firearm details. Thank you for a video that got me interested in the mini 14

    • @lonewanderer3603
      @lonewanderer3603 8 лет назад +1

      1) visit a store like sportsman's and look at prices. I don't think 300bo is terribly expensive.
      2) even the subsonic bullets will pack more punch than a big bore handgun.
      3) if you change cartridge, you must change barrels. easier to do in an AR platform. the 556 won't blow up in a 300bo barrel and the 300bo won't even chamber in a 556 barrel.

    If Ruger would just make a Mini 30 that accepted standard AK mags, had a larger chamber for steel cased
    ( & non SAAMI foreign ammo) topped with a 24x1.5mm or 14x1L threaded barrel they'd appeal to the AK crowd a bit more. The 300BLK thing is a waste with a mini 14 over the AR15.

    • @ravissary79
      @ravissary79 6 лет назад +1

      supposedly the mini gives you less gas face than a DI AR. That's what he says anyways. Many piston type systems are noisy when suppressed, that makes the AR quiet, but the spring makes it go "boing", this one doesn't do either, no pop, no boing. And the gun is simple and tends to keep running all of the time with minimal cleaning. But I agree a handbuilt or purchased DI 300blk pistol makes a little more sense, can't get this in a pistol. Even if you could get it and SBR it, the AR just makes more sense at that point. But I can see the logic of this firearm.

    As soon as I buy new magazines (metal type) I polish the inside of the ears on them. Had issues with one of my rifles (failure to feed) and started looking for the reason for the issue. Found that most magazines are extremely rough on the inside of the ears and it lends itself to failure to feed.

    Your vids are really good. Production quality is pretty nice although there was that arm that came into the shot towards the end.
    Maybe you can help TFB get all their videos up to this quality.

    • @tfbtv
      @tfbtv  9 лет назад +1

      airbomb34 I am so glad you noticed the arm. It's a guy who comes to watch the shoots for fun and he gets a little too "involved" in the process. Me and the guys have a laugh about him, and after we wrapped this, I think I joked "if someone notices [the guy] in the shot, he's banned." LOL.
      Anyways, I've noticed your comments in other posts about the TFBTV videos and you clearly have some technical knowledge. To give you some behind the scenes info, I am on a less-than-ideal workflow. First, my post software sucks - Premiere Elements and Corel Ultimate. I just can't justify the expense for Vegas or Premiere. Second, no wireless mic, all audio synced in post. Third, and by far the worst of all, I have no one to pull focus, so I do it myself. Finally, it's three hours round trip to get to the property where I do the shoots, so I shoot a ton, thus a LOT ends up on the cutting room floor. Most of the time, I shoot with a GX7 or hacked GH2, but I did just pick up a G7, so 4k (albeit 30fps) is now in the game.
      Anyways, I get frustrated with all of that shit, so to have someone with a working knowledge of videography drop a positive comment is very encouraging. My earnest thanks. -James

      TFB TV You are indeed doing good for the video production - and I am using the same software (Corel X8 Ultimate). It looks good and sound is good. The only thing sometimes jumps are the quick millisecond jumps in the video.
      I personally play with transitions a bit more - one of the nicer features in Corel.

      The magazines arent the mini's strong suit. For starters, theyre pretty pricey. It also takes some practice to be able to reliably swap mags on these rifles in a timely fashion. That pin that locks in the front of the mag can be a real bitch. Aside from that, theres not a single other thing about minis that i dont love.

    On the feed issue: I have a mini 30 (7.62x39). The 20 round mags have serious feeding issues when fully loaded. I have a lot of problems feeding a fully loaded mag with the first round. I find that I have to push the first round to the very front of the mag, almost over the lips to feed properly. I don't think that's a fluke.

    Is it just me, or does that bolt fly back and send that brass flyin over to next tuesday (only when using the lighter grain bullets paired with the suppressor)? Or does the Mini-14 just shoot brass out the side at the same FPS as the bullet flyin out the muzzle normally (ejection seemed normal with the heavier bullets)? Can you adjust the gas system on the Mini-14 at all? Lastly, and yes I'm thinking the very same thing as you:
    will this dude ever stop asking questions?? (sorry, ha but thanks for the very thorough and objective review!)
    Of all the youtubez, I think this is the ONE video, very well done btw, that is going to push me over into making the jump... the .300 BLK jump...

    • @tfbtv
      @tfbtv  9 лет назад +2

      KneightRiduh Here's the comment I was waiting for. First of all, excellent observation. Yes, with the lighter supersonic rounds and the suppressor, that brass hits warp....and I think it looks pretty bad ass. I wanted to point it out in the video, but I had already run my mouth enough.
      As Ruger ships these with non-adjustable gas systems that are tuned for sub/suppressed or super/unsuppressed, it's no surprise that the combo of the faster, lighter round and the additional backpressure from the silencer = brass in the next parish over. One on hand, it lends credence to Ruger's claim that the guns are optimally tuned from the factory, but on the other hand, it does demonstrate that an adjustable gas system would be nice (although not really needed). Fortunately, I think there are a couple of third party options out there.
      At the risk of sounding biased; my research on the .300BLK ballistics, the fact that I own a .30 cal silencer, the declining price of the ammo, and my experience shooting .300BLK silenced for the first time made me a believer. Jump in, water's warm.
      Thanks for the kind comment and your astute remarks related to the brass and the gas system.

      +Logic Modding (RGH Corona) .308 Winchester (7.62x 51 NATO), which would be a real mini M14 (M1A1) which the Mini14 was based on. Not a 7.62 x 39, AK 47 round like the Mini 30.
      I don't have a problem with this round, but since the Ruger Mini 30 already exist, it doesn't make much sense, they're too similar. The only thing this cartridge has over the 7.62x39 is that it can be loaded up to a 220 grain, a subsonic load making it great for silencers. As neat and cool as they are, how many people are really going to be using a silencer? In an AR platform, with their quick and easy barrel change, this round makes all the sense in the world. With the same receiver you can go from 5.56 to .300 by just changing the barrel. I just don't see it in this rifle.

    I like your video, the production values, the feel, and the "straight-shooting". I had already bought one, but your review made me feel better about my decision.
    Call me a rookie, call me a liberal, call me old school, but my only complaint about my Mini-14 300 BLK is the width of the center blade on the front sight; I estimate that thing to be somewhere between 12 and 16 MOA wide. Only been shooting for about 9 months, now, first with a 10/22TD, then I bought the Mini, even after reading this review. I now know that I’ve been spoiled by the Tech-Sights I put on the front and rear of the 10/22, with front post spec’d at 7.63MOA.
    So, to the point, this past Saturday, I installed new rear sight (from Tech-Sights) and a new Ulitmak rail on the Mini. I was itchin’ to get to a range and find a zero with the new sights. So, I drove to Montgomery County Shooting Complex (Tennessee, south of Fort Campbell, a really great range), to test it out. In intermittent rain, mostly a left-to-right cross-wind, sometimes changing to a head-wind, using 150gr supersonic ammo, I aimed, shot, assessed, and adjusted my new “irons” at 50yds until I put 3 a set of 4 consecutive rounds into a 1″ circle, then 2 straight sets of 3 shots into, first, a 2″ square, then, into a 2″ circle. (Spread of both the latter groups was well under the 2" centers of the targets.)
    After that, I moved to 100yds and put my first 3rds from the Mini into the bull, with group diameter right at 2.25″.
    (My results with 10/22 were, in general, slightly better, after I gauged the drop.)
    I know that is not at the level of Alvin York, Annie Oakley, or Carlos Hathcock, but, based upon what I’ve read from so many folks who dismiss pretty much all variants of the Mini, insofar as accuracy goes, my results seem to border on outstanding.
    (No animals were harmed during my session, but, 8 out of 10 squirrels agree, they would have been.)
    I can also confirm that Ruger Mini-14 .223/5.56 mag’s work just fine. I also have a Pro-Mag that works fine, usually, with the occasional "stickiness" when chambering the first round. So far, it has cycled a-ok, unsuppressed, with the 3 makes of sub-sonic ammo I have fed it.
    Although I have seen few, if any, reviewers note this, I am pretty sure that the barrel on the Mini-14 300 BLK is the heaviest one in the line; although it’s the same as the others from receiver to gas block - that’s why the Ultimak rail worked just fine - it’s much thicker from the gas block to the muzzle. IOW, based on what I've read and perhaps the biggest criticism of the Mini in .223/5.56, it should be stiffer and tolerate more heating, perhaps even totally preventing that vertical-stringing so many have written about.
    Again, I’m still in my rookie year of shooting any firearm and I can’t be considered an expert. Also, I will confess that I truly prefer the more traditional look of the Mini to that of anything else I’ve seen in its product segment. (I rate the M1A offerings from Springfield as gorgeous, too, and I looked at them, but I didn’t want to spend that much, so I put them in a different market. However, I think my Mini now looks even better than NIB, a bit more elegantly bad-a$$, since I added that Ultimak rail.)
    So, in the end, if this rookie, using iron sights and middle-aged eyeballs, on a breezy day, with good-quality-but-reloaded ammo, is consistently putting 300 BLK rounds well inside a 3″ circle at 100yds, this here Mini-14 just has to be better than so many folks say it is. -Steve in Memphis

    Great video James. I'm thinking about the Mini-14 instead of an AR-15 in .223. First I didn't know that a suppressor can be put on the barrel. Didn't know the flash suppressor came off. Hi Kelby, I'm new to guns and been doing a lot of price checking and AR-15's are no cheap, just recently Mossberg, Ruger, and a few other gun makers have entered the 5.56 AR-15 real around $799. Now if you start adding new triggers, stocks, accessories you are also up close to the $1000 range and that's for the low end entry, even counting the DPMS, and M&P. What's amazing is this rifle wasn't on the ban lists. I'm leaning towards an AR-15 but I might get this also. What I don't like is the price of converting or buying another upper on the AR-15 to shoot the blackout at $300 all the way to up to $1000 costs. At that point I would just buy a 308 and have 2 guns to use. Anyway like I said i'm new and if my facts are wrong I really would like to know
