In about 1976 on a freezing winter Saturday afternoon when AFCBournemouth weren’t playing at home , my Dad took me into our local very conservative towns’ privately owned department store / restaurant . The owner himself , a rotund guy in his late 60s complete with the bald but remaining brylcreeme slicked back hair called Reg Alderson recognised my old man due probably to his being a gigging pianist in local clubs & pubs and seeing me leafing through the crummy LPs on offer beckoned us ..I still remember this big old bloke handing me an LP with cover shaped like a grey Mitre Football as if he was handing the 13 yr old me the keys to every horny girls’ bedroom in the district . “ You Promise to look after this “ he commanded without knowing if I gave a hoot about footy. As it happens I did & still had my elder brothers 1970 Esso coin thing c/w poster.
The album covers were a fold - out football and in colour & all the 66 Final - brilliant . The music was probably the Cheeseyest festival of covers I’d ever suffered. “ Back Home “ was side 1 track 1 & is the exception & still evokes those days of being 5 or 6 . As for Aldersons Department Store , it’s 1st floor is still a restaurant but now called Bombay Nights & the GF is an Estate Agent. 😂👍❤️

The greatest World Cup of all time, that Brazil team is probably the greatest team ever. The football was so exciting, better than the crap we watch today, now it’s so boring, the object of the game is to go forward, not back passing side passing, it bores me silly. That team would have beaten today’s boring England, and Man City easily. I say thank god for RUclips, we can watch football how it’s meant to be played.

@Joegamer55 Terrible? Couldn't disagree more. The regulation 90 minutes was fantastic, an open attacking game, end to end with lots of chances created, tension building with every minute, West Germany equalising at the death. Then of course the extra 30 minutes were insane.
If you get a chance watch the entire game, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

@Joegamer55 The first half was ordinary but the game exploded after half-time...the Germans threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Italy who defended for their lives. It was gripping, you couldn't take your eyes off the TV set. Then they equalise in the second minute of stoppage time. Then you had that incredible extra-time. I'm not saying it's the greatest football game of all time but, quite rightly, it's a contender.

I always thought this world cup was the finest ever.
And the game against West Germany was on TV on a late Sunday afternoon, and after which the pints never tasted the same that night. The summer of 1970 was a scorcher throughout in the UK. It is seldom mentioned that the recognised deputy for Gordon Banks was Everton's Gordon West who had been part of the team that won the first division title in April 1970.West was a great shot stopper and had a huge presence. He declined the invitation to join the England squad and was replaced by Alex Stepney and Peter Bonetti.
West was never selected again, though fans from that era who saw West might concede he would have been a safer bet to replace Banks. England had a great side, that never really recovered from this sickening defeat by West Germany who were aided by a stonewall penalty turned down when England were ahead.

The goal that Franz Beckenbaur scored to get his team back to 2-1 was a long range shot that went under Bonetti's body. West would have saved this and not lost the flight of the ball for the equaliser.
Westy always said he had no regrets losing out in 1970.
Sadly his marriage ended in the mid 70s, by which time he was at Tranmere Rovers

The sun, the heat, the altitude makes the teams focus on ball skills, not on speed and power and not on running wild, they must pace themselves. Brazil and Argentina, not the fastest, but the better ball players (so why us Mexicans never good enough, that's another debate). Brazilian champions also stated that in Rio and Sao Paulo they also never play in mid day, the played at night or late afternoon. Pelé himself said they were better phisically prepared for the climate and didn't rely solely on talent (of wich they had loads)...

The Germans succeeded where England failed, because without any kind of winger in their squad, England had to stick to their counter-punching 4-4-2 even after it was clear that this system demands too much from the midfielders and full backs. Very interesting documentary for me the most interesting part was the match between west Germany and England having seen extended highlights this my view:
Yes England were stronger in the first half and beginning of the second however the tide turned starting with Helmut Schons inspired substitute Jurgen Grabowski in the 55th minute thereafter West Germany simply got stronger as the second half progressed
1 thing the programme got wrong was that Bobby Charlton been Substituted released Beckenbauer. The way it was told is that Charlton got substituted and Beckenbauer scored afterwards this is not true.
Beckenbauer scored in the 68th minute Charlton was taken off in the 70th. So therefore West Germany were back in the game before charltons departure
Uwe Seelers goal was brilliant and as it turned it his last so he saved the best for last Seeler was a specialist at using any part of his body to score goals because he was very athletic there were many occasions in the Bundesliga he would be down and yet get his leg up and score a goal
The Only England player I felt sorry for was Peter Bonetti because he carried the can but the truth of the Matter was that Germany got stronger as the game went on and England faded
There have been many England fans who claim that if Banks had played England would have won but I disagree my answer is that it will never be known

Despite how good this tournament is it was fixed . In the semi - final . Brazil were originally meant to play Uruguay at Mexico City , but at the last minute they changed the venue to Guadalajara. Which was the main venue of Brazil’s games . Guadalajara was humid and had a high altitude. Making it a nightmare for first timers to play in . Brazil had been accustomed to that setting all tournament. But Uruguay had to redirect and travel to Guadalajara from Mexico City . So it obviously heavily affected their game . Which was why they lost . This was selective cheating , because FIFA had to let Brazil win because it was well known this was gonna be pele’s last tournament.
