I HAVE seen the film, and it's everything you say and more. The acting is superb. You didn't mention Alfre Woodard, but she is fantastic in her one scene. How does Jeymes Samuel get these incredible stars in his films? Omar Sy is huge in France and as Lupin on Netflix. He really brings it in his supporting role as the "immortal gladiator". This isn't just a good film, it's a good movie, with tons of action and comedy. And no, it is NOT blasphemous.
The Benedict Cumberbatch character represents the westernized version of Jesus with blonde hair and blue eyes and he ended up on the cross like everyone else
I think Cumberbatch's role is just to say that: why is jesus depicted as a white man, because he didnt get a second look when he was just another black person but when he cleaned up and became something different (beautiful due to difference) then all eyes went to him. Eyes were drawn to him and he got all the attention. He has all this money now and is "making it rain" which drew the attention of the Roman's as a messiah and because he was different the artist wanted to paint a picture of him on the cross. So while 12 other people were crucified he was the one that was recorded in art. (My opinion)
Yes. Good point fam. It was funny in film though. He would have been alive if he wasn't healed and blessed. To be honest, is only fault was helping people. He got their attention because he was handing out coins. Smh. Damned if you don't, damned if you do.

I loved this movie! The most accurate portrayal of biblical characters ever! All the performances were amazing. The layers tying in police brutality and brutality of slavery was a great take on the Bible.
Just saw it. And yes the bad reviews are because of the concept. Nooone wants to take a black Jesus seriously. But ten stars i laughed so hard and cried so hard especially towards the end. Because when its from this black perspective it actually makes sense why Jesus got murdered in the first place. Because of cultural and spiritual differences which makes me feel seen. And im not religious so it really moved me into a new thought process. Ya ll go see this movie. It was well done and smart.❤😎😎😘😘✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿💋
I feel we all have been a Clarence before while living we all fall short. But the the ending was the most touching part. So don’t judge it until you’ve seen it. God bless
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾B, I love that you stood up for yourself about the negative comments from those who haven’t seen or planned to see this movie. I was on the fence leaning towards not, but after your review, I most definitely will see it. I respect and trust your reviews.
Went to see the movie Thursday. Loved it. If you know your Biblical history you know that there were many at that time who were claiming to be the messiah for various reasons. This story is told from the perspective of one of these people who happened to be related to one of the disciples. No mocking God at all. In fact, it’s a redemptive story.
In order for Clarence to connect with his higher self, he had to find himself first. He had it all along. He had to look inward instead of upward. "Knowledge is more valuable than belief." His complete and final coming into knowledge of God wasnt hinged on a feeling, societal influences, rewards or punishments. It was personal, it was irrefutable, it was selfless, it was REAL. Brilliant story!
That is not the bible though. In fact much of what you says contradicts the biblical message. I don't know who this film was really aimed at to be honest.
@@captainmartin1219 What did I say that "contradicts the biblical message"? That's the problem right there. Most Christians barely understand their own belief systems and arrogantly oppose anything that sounds different from what they were indoctrinated with.
I could be going on a limb here but I think the character of Benedict cumberbatch was a nod to the constant white-washing of black culture and the merits that come from black culture/accomplishments. Our protagonist (Clarence) was being crucified and it was heartfelt and yet the guy being painted/ going down in history was the white guy who looks like the typical interpretation Jesus rather than the real Jesus in the film or our protagonist we’d being rooting for the entire film. Soundtrack was stellar. I definitely couldn’t help but groove on multiple occasions, and the smoking floating scene was phenomenal to say the least 10/10
Book of Clarence is phenomenal! Cast, writing, acting, and direction was genius. The ending left you forefilled, in deep thought, and wanting more. Bravo to all involved!!!
Thank you for reviewing this movie. That Nights over Egypt song had me!!! I had forgot about that tune! WELL PLACED Indeed!!! Great review - very fair!
The sad thing is black people bashing this movie which they have NOT SEEN but assume is blasphemous . But none of this hate for the last 3 major box office “biblically based “ movies Exodus, Noah or POTC. SMH
Muthf*cka I saw those movies and they sucked too if I had been doin my 45 Second Movie Reviews at the time, I would have trashed both movies ESPECIALLY Noah holy crap that movie was a hot piece of garabage one of the worst movies I've ever seen and even worse it's not Biblical accurate and IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE THEY PUT ROCK MONSTERS IN A MOVIE ABOUT THE BIBLE IS THE DIRECTOR ON CRACK???
Those movies were worse but I know they wasn't afraid to take risks but WHY did Jay have to produce it for if Nas or Kanye had produced it it would be a different story and take.
This was a wonderful review and straight to the point. I agree with your critique but I would rate the film a 7.5/10. It was really nice and aesthetically pleasing but some parts of the storyline were a bit disjointed to me. I watched the movie and my original interpretation of the preview was exactly how the film played out. I’m a seminarian so I knew this film would offer a different perspective that occurred back then. Also, I knew this would be entertaining and not a biblical documentary lol I never thought this film was blasphemous. Also, Benedict Cumberpatch’s role was to show there were “other” people being perceived as a savior too. There was a scene where the Roman Soldiers were like, “is that another person acting like a messiah?” But I believe it was also a dig at the “white Jesus” complex too. I thought it was HILARIOUS!
This movie was phenomenal. An absolute must see. Kudos to the creators and the Creator for inspiring this creation. And Black Beauty can not be overlooked in this film. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💯💯💯💜💜💜👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾

Philippians 1:15-18 New International Version 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,” ~ Best book every written The Bible, I pray that many more souls get a chance to go deeper in Gods word. To learn more of His word for themselves, may the Spirit be poured down to bring wisdom and a desire to seek our Messiah - Jesus
It's an interesting movie but it's kind of all over the place. The actors... FANTASTIC! There are literally so many african americans actors, French Omar Sy, British David Oyelowo and Marianne Jean-Baptiste and so many more. My nitpick is one minute it wanted to be taken serious, then it wanted to be played for laughs. One minute, Clarence acting like a stoner and the next time he's serious. Then, he's blames his brother but how is that possible when they... I won't spoil it. Ugh, I wanted to loved it more but I enjoy it... 7.6/10🙂
Finally!!!!! A biblically accurate depiction of The Bible! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 The Israelites have always been and will always be BLACK. Specifically so called Black, Hispanics and Native Americans.💁🏾♀️
God forgive me because I originally judged this trailer harshly myself because I immediately thought it was blasphemous but when I SAW THE MOVIE FOR MYSELF, it was not at all that way. In fact, it made me have more patience for unbelievers who struggle. As Christians we forget that coming to Christ is a journey for ALL and that's what matters in the end. What Clarence used for evil, Christ used for good in the end. Who cares what the actors look like, who cares that it's not 100% biblically accurate, and who cares that it's not the usual Christian movie with perfect characters who never curse. If you can laugh when a black man is feminized and calls himself Madea while in a dress, can watch black movies/series that portray black on black crime, laugh at black comedy that divides black men & women from staying monogamous, and pop your fingers to blasphemous rap/r&b that clearly promotes idolatry and fornication, then you can put the stone down before you cast it. Stop for one minute and use this rare opportunity within Hollywood to introduce the topic of Christ and the how Clarence stopped just thinking what was best for him, but giving his life up for others. Take a moment to talk about the division of black men in the beginning of the film and how they stood up & helped one another in the end. I'm not a fan of JAY-Z and Hollywood sins, but just like Clarence's motives, Jay-Z may not have any clue why he was a part of this movie. God can use ANYTHING to get His word out, even through the most UNLIKELY person. There's a CLEAR message in this movie that we are ALL sinners, but it is Christ who uses who HE wants to and THANK GOD we aren't judged by man who looks at the outward appearance of this movie, but the heart of the internal message which is to BELIEVE in HIM!
To all the Clarences and Clarencias. Great work Jeymes Samuel 💯🔥I agree the ending needed another 1min or 2. Benedict Cumberbatch role was phenomenal too. Few clues to his role but fitting. Reflect on the artist painting his picture and his statements 😅
To answer your question, Benedict’s role is to show the fact that even when you get saved it doesn’t mean that hard times won’t come or it may make you become persecuted as the Bible says.
I think the movie was great. The Bible says that Jesus accepted the thief on the cross beside him once he accepted him. This is just the interpretation of that thief during his lifetime
My sister made plans for us to see this movie, I was thinking OK if I get a day off, B's review makes me want to see it a little bit more, and on top of that it looks like it is a positive Black movie with no agenda's. I may see this movie because of that even though I haven't seen a religious movie that I liked. It seems like the negative comments or reviews may be because of the Black actors portraying characters or events from the bible and you know that triggers people.
I think that is part of it. I also think a number of people were put off by the involvement of Jay Z. Further I think focusing the film on this Clarence character instead of a biblical character hurt as well. They should have made the film about Judas. Some of the directors comments during interviews may have hurt as well. He has said a few times that the film is not about Jesus at all.
I saw it last night and it had so many powerful moments in the movie. Seeing all the black characters made me feel good and making the Romans white was cinematic genius. I think whenever we say or jesus is black people are in a uproar but we can watch all the old white biblical movies like 10 commandments but never question the actors who looked comical to me when I was younger.
Make sure you check out A Thousand and One from last year! Teyana Taylor is even better in that film than she was in this. She deserved not only to be nominated for an Oscar but to win! She is a snub not enough people are talking about!!
Finally saw the movie after seeing so much hate for the film before it even came out. Just to find out it’s a film about a man who finds his faith in god. Such a shame people spazzed out seeing black people in these roles
Watch some of old, white biblical movies like The Ten Commandments and similar movies of the late 1940s-1960s. You're understand the zooming in & out or blackening of things around. Watch Passion of The Christ to understand white Jesus (Benedict Cumberbatch's role) and Judas. Great review perspective, you have a new subscriber in me.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s role I believe was purely there for the crucifix. Scene where we see the guy painting the white “Jesus” that was to let us know that it only takes one person, making up a story or believing a story and handing it down to generations. We all know that there’s no way in Jesus could have been blue eyed and blonde haired, but that’s what the paintings look like everywhere except Italy, of course. I thought that was the second deepest scene in the movie . The deepest, of course, was the scene where the character was explaining why the moments were scared of Black people.
I don't go to movie theaters. They are just to nasty for my liking. I wait for the DVD to come out, and watch it in the comfort of my home. I found this movie to be much more than I thought it would be. It touch all of my emotions, and moved my spirit. I am so glad I purchased the DVD. Now I can watch it over and over again. I found this to be a excellent movie, with the perfect actors to play each part. Great job all. Thank you very much. 🙏🏾🕊⚡️
Delicious movie!!! Grateful for the creative writing!… what is funny to me is there is no way anyone anything can “mock God”… lol God is WHAT IS… WHAT IS NOT…. and ALL THERE IS IN BETWEEN… soooo how can Hod be mocked? lol that’s Human stuff… again This was a Yummy movie… a fun ride… some religious folks should lighten up for their well Being… THANK YOU FOR YOUR Commentary… Peace Unto EVERYONE ❤
I didn't love it I didn't hate it. There were things I liked and things I didn't. It's a conversation piece. Whether it's good or not depends on the individual....their beliefs, biblical knowledge, taste, etc. The story as a whole was not blasphemous...but there are characters who don't believe who say & do blasphemous things in their disbelief. Some believers may have a hard time getting through some parts of the movie due to this. There were some messages trying to be pushed. I liked the soundtrack, the acting, the beautiful black cast, costumes, & the unique perspective it had....so it was worth it for those reasons... Tonally the movie is alil over the place, some missing aspects in character development, & some character interactions that were left a bit flat.... so there are moments I'm like what is the point of this.
Great film! Lakeith was phenomenal! This role was Probably my favorite for him. As a fellow Christian I highly recommend seeing this movie! The whole cast was amazing. 👏🏾🙌🏾
I appreciate your review and agree with a lot of your points. I saw the film today and to me it's a curious and satisfying love letter to Christ. It sort of does what Star Trek does for me when imaging a diverse future, except it expands imaging a diverse past. I loved the emotional depiction of men. I loved that hair was natural which was normal. There are bits that confused me, but parts to love far outweigh those.
Just finished watching. This movie is good. I'm not religious. But this move was entertaining all the way through. made my eyes water a little bit. This movie should have been a success, in the box office.
The Book of Clarence is a good movie with a perspective that makes you think. It's definitely not what I thought they were going to try-that Jesus wasn't real. It's the complete opposite. It's the definition of don't judge a book by its cover. (What I took from it)
All I have to say is my Clar .ence dropped all large popcorn 🍿 on the floor of the theater 😂😂😂we still laughing......I wanna go back see again "Ten toes down "
Interesting insights. Did you notice how the setting of the movie could have been set in modern times and story could have been about same trials of a young black male trying feel valued? I talk about it in my review at Movies, Music and More here on RUclips.
Honestly, I wasn’t aware of this movie until I came across this review. I’m more inclined to to see this than The Color Purple tbh but I’ll probably end up watching both anyways. Just subscribed and looking forward to seeing more reviews.
Loved this film! I agree with everything you said in your review. I wasn’t expecting the humor but after a while I got used to it and appreciated it. It was so emotional and I cried so much. Every performance was superb and I’m so upset people are saying it’s blasphemous because it absolutely isn’t. It’s just such a wonderful perspective and visual, so beautiful to watch. Just really so good!
From the very opening scene i knew that was gonna be Benedict Cumberbatch on that first cross at the end. I watched this at home on my laptop by myself and it always goes like that.. I call something from the beginning and no one is around to verify it smh but yea this was a great movie i remember a while back when the first teaser came out i was really intrigued and then over the months i forgot about it.. i was browsing through Prime looking for something to rent and then Book Of Clarence popped up and i was instantly excited. I am known to have a hard time making up my mind especially on movies. I'll go to RottenTomatoes til i think i found the perfect one but it's some movies that i know I am gonna like and i don't want to see any reviews especially with this knowing it's some people saying it's blasphemous or whatever which is inevitable but yeah i recommend to everyone just give it a chance!
I do not subscribe to any of the big (3) religions, now saying that I liked this movie, I truly believe it is a Christian film. I do not think there is anything wrong with that. What breaks my heart is that Black Christians are blasting this because it depicts a Black Christ. We still have a problematic relationship with Cesare Borgia and that depiction, Christians call Jesus. Black people by the BUS LOAD went to see Passion of the Christ, with actors and actresses speaking Italian Latin and no representation of the many BLACK people in the region. That being said, I do not know who this film was for. I got "Life of Brian" feels from the trailer. but there were times in the movie that I got the "God is one of us" and then it was "Get yours in the by and by" I was hoping they would have used Teyana Taylor more, and I want to shout out the young actor Caleb McLaughlin from Stranger Things, being a grown man as Zeke, and really being risky by participating in such a polarizing project. Which makes me want to watch his career closely. Will he have the same freedom to pick obscure films as Daniel Radcliffe got to do after Harry Potter? Also, I always loved Rj Cyler, since his debut in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Maybe when it moves to streaming it will get the love it should.
As a Christian I love the message. Basically it says that ANYONE can be saved once they believe that Jesus is savior. It is not at all blasphemous. LaKeith is THE MAN. Love it.
I finally watched the movie. I ain’t even gonna lie, I had a negative thought before watching the movie. However, my thoughts changed after watching it. I actually love the movie. It was dope and funny at the same time.
How low to none existing expectations for this movie going into it. It was pretty good. Couldn’t decide if showing the face of Jesus was the right call or not. That scene with the painter making paintings of cumbersome was funny
People saying it's blasphemous didn't watch the whole movie just trailer. Everyone young seeks knowledge and down the line in middle aged found faith it's the must human experience in one's life.
I saw it and I enjoyed it. YES the movie is long but there are many applicable messages in it. I feel many people are not open minded. Its about perspective and everything doesn't have to be so literal all the time. Not all minorities are Christians and thats ok. I didn't think it was a comedy nor blasphemous. It was a piece of visual artwork that is a depicted version of the artists. Its sad how so many people scream they want freedom and such yet denounce when a free thought is presented but many will condone programmed sterotypical nonsense. Teyana Taylor was really good in this as well. The ending was a little heart wrenching and honestly wished it would have went in a different direction but again I get it. Folks have supported far worse now.
Man this movie made me cry more than 5 times. I resonated so much more with this film more than any other biblical film
That’s dope

The Benedict Cumberbatch character represents the westernized version of Jesus with blonde hair and blue eyes and he ended up on the cross like everyone else
Yup lol
He's the worldwide version that has "so called" blacks in mental shackles. Revelation 1:14-15 tells the truth.
With coins shooting from his hands😂😂😂
@@soulwork8391given to him by the negro messiah.
I loved “The Last Supper” scene. That was brilliant and it’ll me looking at those pictures differently now.

I loved this movie! The most accurate portrayal of biblical characters ever! All the performances were amazing. The layers tying in police brutality and brutality of slavery was a great take on the Bible.
Accurate of what biblical character😂
“Wrong Heel MF”😂 Omar Sy’s character. Hilarious😂 Great movie!
The soundtrack is good. When they added "Nights over Egypt" I was like Ayye. 😅 showing my age

That was such a dope scene! Black people so dope!
I’m so happy you talked about how the “enemies” came together when a bigger enemy was present. Thank you for that.
It was well done and smart.❤😎😎😘😘✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿💋
to make a movie about a black jesus it would have to be a comedy otherwise people would trash it even before it gets released...

I feel we all have been a Clarence before while living we all fall short. But the the ending was the most touching part. So don’t judge it until you’ve seen it. God bless

You should. The movie was really good and shows Jesus' grace and mercy!❤
My wife cried and instantly said it was her favorite movie
Went to see the movie Thursday. Loved it. If you know your Biblical history you know that there were many at that time who were claiming to be the messiah for various reasons. This story is told from the perspective of one of these people who happened to be related to one of the disciples. No mocking God at all. In fact, it’s a redemptive story.
Wrong- ruclips.net/video/fVz_wuuqBNE/видео.htmlsi=ZZOJFnNPIdqk6MtU
Overall, this is a very good film. I loved the Last Supper scene and the cinematography used to capture the moment. It was creatively done.
Wtf are you talking about his blessings came from above and that's what turned him into a believer
@@captainmartin1219 What did I say that "contradicts the biblical message"? That's the problem right there. Most Christians barely understand their own belief systems and arrogantly oppose anything that sounds different from what they were indoctrinated with.
@@shineonnent.7951 read my post and try again...
I definitely couldn’t help but groove on multiple occasions, and the smoking floating scene was phenomenal to say the least 10/10
cumberbatch is a reminder to blacks to keep worshipping ceasar borgeia.
Excellent review. I gave it a 9.4
I can’t wait to see it again. I believe this movie should’ve received an IMAX or Dolby Cinema release.

15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
What's the symbolism of the dancing blue lady??? Wasn't there one in the harder they fall?

In the regards to the Color Purple, I would prefer to watch the original film than the remake.

Two wrongs don’t make it right
Just because there’s some white biblical movies, doesn’t mean you should make a black biblical movie which both movies are not biblical
Google the Voronet monastery in Romania.
I absolutely loved this film. I hope to see more stories from black perspectives in all genres. Especially biblical cinema.
I can't wait to watch this. Love Lakeith Stanfield.

I agree with everything!! Great work!
Great film! Lakeith was phenomenal! This role was Probably my favorite for him. As a fellow Christian I highly recommend seeing this movie! The whole cast was amazing. 👏🏾🙌🏾
The movie was all over the place, not worth watching in theaters in my opinion. Not blasphemous at all just all over the place.

The Book of Clarence is a good movie with a perspective that makes you think. It's definitely not what I thought they were going to try-that Jesus wasn't real. It's the complete opposite. It's the definition of don't judge a book by its cover. (What I took from it)

Most of us dont know we still have the ceasar borgeia shackles still on unfortunately.
Also man made religion has nothing to do with the bible.
I just streamed Clarence. It is brilliant. Similar to the Old and New Testament, there are levels to this film. I will watch it again and again.
I love it because Bible wise and the looks is simple more true ❕💡💡
As a Christian I love the message. Basically it says that ANYONE can be saved once they believe that Jesus is savior. It is not at all blasphemous. LaKeith is THE MAN. Love it.

I'm an agnostic white dude (just so yall know the background I'm coming from). Rn (june), this is my favorite or second favorite film of the year
I saw it and I enjoyed it.
