  • Maurice Chevalier with Orchestra - You've Got That Thing, Fox-trot from Musical Comedy "Fifty Million Frenchmen" (Cole Porter), Victor 1930 (USA)
    NOTE: "Fifty Million Frenchmen" was a standard comedy "boy-meets-a-girl-in Paris" and it opened on Broadway in 1929. The title is a reference to Sophie Tucker's 1927 hit song "Fifty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong" by Willie Raskin, Billy Rose, and Fred Fisher, which compared free attitudes in 1920s Paris with censorship and prohibition in the United States. The show was adapted for a film two years later by Lloyd Bacon and filmed entirely in Technicolor. The cast included Ole Olsen, Chic Johnson, William Gaxton, Helen Broderick, John Halliday, Claudia Dell, Lester Crawford, and Evalyn Knapp. Music was written by Cole Porter including such hits, as "You Do Something To Me", "Find Me a Primitive Man", "You've Got That Thing" or "Paree, What Did You Do to Me?". Enormous success of the movie had led Warner Bros. to releasing in 1934 a two-reeler entitled Paree, Paree with Bob Hope in the William Gaxton role.
    Unfortunately, Maurice Chevalier was not invited to perform in that American show the plot and the atmosphere of which was so strongly flavoured with the Gallic spices, instead he recorded for Victor one of the hits from the show.

    Maurice was the greatest Frenchman who ever lived (forget Napoleon and De Gaulle) and late in his long life, originated one of my favourite quotes (just imagine it spoken with his accent) "Old age is not so bad - when you consider the alternative." Words to live by!
    Vive La France.

    Gee!!! I've heard this music since I was a baby - My dad had a Victrola where he played 78's - one of the oodles of records he had was this one sung by Maurice Chevalier - exactly this Victor record - (I was born in 1935 - so I was hearing this tune when I was 6 - that's around Pearl Habor!!!! )(I'm getting old - I'm now 87 (Nov 15, 2022) Greetings from Lima, Peru!

    Hello Grzegor - Your notes are always phenomenally interesting. Maurice Chevalier was a great caliber performer - notwithstanding some extremely negative personal comments about him made by some of his contemporaries. Perhaps they were envious of his great success. Al Jolson also had some bad notices re: regarding his personal behavior - even though he could perform - in an awesome manner. I am happy about your really good, traditional Christmas Eve! Thanks a million and have a great day!!!

    Merci for this delightful vid. Chevalier's accent makes him sound somewhat comical in English; very suitable for this entertaining--albeit controversial-- Gallic star.

      Maybe that's why his voice is/was considered the stereotypical French accent in pop culture (either him or Charles Boyer's [the latter of which is the inspiration for Looney Tunes character Pepe Le Pew]).

    #ugottalisten2b4udie You'll never win laurels because of your morals but I'll tell you what you've got. You've got that power, that power to grip. That thing that makes vines prefer to cling. Helen of Troy? If her face launched a thousand ships, well yours could launch a navy.

    So this song includes the following rhymes….. So this song
    has the following rhymes..... So this song has the following rhymes.....Laurels / Morals Orchard / Tortured …and both within the framework of a song that nails the truth about love and attraction …and
    it’s not even one of his better-known compositions. That is some kinda gold-standard song-writing …it shouldn’t be possible to be that good at
    itRIP Cole Porter

      CreosoteChris The irony was that although Cole nailed a description of what's supposed to happen between a man and woman in beautiful rhythm, melody, and lyric, he apparently never had it actually in his life, with Linda, or anybody else.

    1:38 . I didn't think Adam Conover could possibly be right when he said the popularization of wedding rings was due to advertisements in movies, but this may prove right his video "Adam Ruins Engagement Rings"! Is it truly a product placement?

    • @tylerbaldwin9513
      @tylerbaldwin9513 5 лет назад

      No, Wedding Rings were very commonplace. Adam Conover was specifically talking about Diamond Rings. Before, most rings were made of Gold or some other precious metal.
