Just bought a welder so I scoured RUclips and found your channel with the tubing I want to work with, I am a rank beginner and need all the tips I can get and this video is a good start.
Just a heads up, get a fan behind or beside you to blow away the fumes. With stick or flux core welding it help with hoot soot up, plus you are welding gal and it can make you very sick quick.
1. Wear a respirator at all times when welding galvanized steel. 2. Get a fan and place it in a manner the blows smoke away from you. 3. When possible grind away the galvanized coating where you intend to weld. These 3 things should be done every single time you intend to weld galvanized steel.
I had never thought to not use the cup mug welding with flux core wire. . I was so patterned after using gas when mig welding. I would bet the visibility is so much better. Thanks 👍
Yes you get much better visibility and no more cleaning the cup. If you try it make sure you wrap some Teflon tape over the threads and gas holes so they don't get messed up from spatter and slag. I got that tip from Jody at Welding Tips and Tricks. It's a brilliant hack and I've use it for many years now. I wish you the best and thanks for stopping by! 👍
Hey Bruce have you ever done a Blue Demon vs Forney wire/filler video? I tend to use Blue Demon, but Mike Festiva has had excellent results from Forney. I also use Hobart Filler too. Also, I use anti spatter spray when I use flux core to reduce my clean up times.
Yes, my favorite Flux Core wire is the YesWelder .030. I have tried many different brands but this is the one I've had the best results with. I have that wire here but I haven't tried it yet. I will as soon as iI run out this spool of Harbor Freight wire that I bought when I bought the welder. Thanks for the help.
I've used quite a bit of the Harbor Freight wire and it's ok but I think you'll really see the difference when you try the YesWelder wire. I think it's much smoother than the HF wire. I wish you the best!
You're outside, so good ventilation for dealing with galvanized steel. Also, drink a big glass of regular milk after working with it. It staves off the poison in galvanized welding.
Kind of interesting for a beginner like myself. But you didn't explain how you were dealing with the very real dangers of Galvanized material and what precautions you took. Also when you said you used a E-pattern weld you didn't describe what that is. All very vague. Basically it's a video watching you weld and patting yourself on the back.

Welcome aboard!

That was an excellent use of the rectangular test material to evaluate the best welding technique. Cheers.
Thank you very much!

I can't wait to see the finished product, Bruce.
Thanks, me too LOL

With my titanium 125 i can do 14 gauge galvanized square tubing on settings at D 4.5 with .030 wire whip and pull technique does great
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Very helpful for beginners, like myself.
Glad it was helpful!
Problem with going back over it you didn’t clean off the flux before welding it again so you weakened the weld with trapped flux mixed with the weld
Yep. Leads to porosity
I use another (Cheap) machine (Parkside A1) and works great with flux (o.8mm) on galvanized tubing, thanks for the video!
Cool, thanks!
MIG is nice but 1mm E6013 or 7018 if you can find them!
Will this work with conduit?
I would think it will but I haven't tried it.
Very detailed and informative.
Are you a lefty by any chance?
Liked and subbed ✔️
Thank you and yes I'm a lefty. :) Thanks for the sub and enjoy the videos!

No I haven't done any wire comparison videos. I've seen videos with some good results using YesWelder flux core wire but I haven't tried any myself.
Is there a particular brand of wire you recommend?
Yes, my favorite Flux Core wire is the YesWelder .030. I have tried many different brands but this is the one I've had the best results with.

Lincoln has a good multi pass wire
Did you need to clean off galvanizing on material before welding it? What guage of wire did you run?
No I didn’t clean off the galvanization. I use .030 wire.
Is your welder configured with a positive or negative ground?
I always run my gasless flux core wire DCEN. Electrode negative and work clamp positive. (strait polarity)
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Thanks for the info. I’m sure that makes for less splatter and better welds overall.
Yes, that is correct.

You’re right! I’ve never had any problems welding galvanized metal outside. Thanks for your input!

Maybe he doesn't know about being poisoned by the fumes from welding galvanized metal.
Good ventilation, which he's outside, and drink a very large glass of milk after dealing with galvanized steel.
Small cursive e pattern is what he meant
