Great job with more than adequate explanations. Last piece of cast iron I had to weld was an old exhaust from a Farmall tractor. Between the Hobart high nickel rods and a fire pit managed to get the weld job done without any cracking and followed the weld job with a file and straight managing to get the mating surface flat enough still works today.
78yr old mechanic. Machinist friend showed me hoe to drill a hub like on your ge ad r, drill it, tap 1/4 pipe threads and connect it to a hyd rated pipe fitting and to a Porta power. Apply PSI, to losses it from the shaft and slide it off. I was amazed.
That came out great,, Cast Iron can be so inconsistent, you pulled out all the tricks to get it ! pretty much any good cast iron welding rod is about $100.00 #
That should hold together and work well. I like to braze repair cast iron because I have very good results with it. Welding sometimes is a crap shoot with cast. Depends on how dirty or oily it is. I agree on the Hobart rods. They don't run very well compared to others. I like Lincoln or ESAB rods the best.
I've done some brazing, but since I have more time behind a welding helmet than torch goggles, this was my preferred choice. If I have some less critical repairs down the road I might try brazing!
@@themadmailler just kidding bro. People say welding cast Iron doesn't hold, but as a mechanic I kinda disagree. If you do the things properly and heat the work piece up before welding and down after welding gradually and evenly it works pretty well. I wouldn't weld a crankshaft or differential like they do in Pakistan, but there is no problem with welding pieces that are not under high stress and load
@@behroozkhaleghirad I didn't take offense! I do get a kick out of those videos though, they sure do get the job done no matter what! I'm no professional at cast iron repair, but I did know someone who could weld it up no problem, cylinder heads and everything.

I'll have to try that. Thanks for sharing.

Nice work Connor , I bought some Nickel rod 4 years ago and like you have ignored my project :)
the time will come eventually!
Good job
Now lets see that part on the engine
you'll see it! I don't know when, but...someday!
Noob question...Will the extra metal added in the weld cause an imbalance when the gear is spinning? Will that little bit matter?
It would matter if it spun faster. This won't see more than 100rpm or so.
This video's title should have been "Pakistani shenanigans"
Then I would have welded it wearing sandals, no gloves, and doubled up sun glasses!
