Is Barry a New Type of Funny?

please stop being sponsored by BetterHelp. They are shady and scammy AF. Please stop. I'm begging you...
please stop, i know they pay tens of thousands of dollars for spots, they are scammy and treat their workers terribly. Please, do any amount of research about this online
Do a take on fleabag
I miss Jared
I love you helen.
Barry- Am I evil
Hank- totally you're like the most evil guy I know. 😂
Yeah that was a great line, did you know Hank added that line on the spot?
Hank- “Do I not tell you that enough?”
Man all this talk has made me hungry…
You know what I could really go for right now?
*YOSHINOYA BEEF BOWL*
“Do I not tell you that enough??”
I love that they don't hid the fact that Sally although she victim of abuse she is an abuser as well
The way she treated Natalie was horrible
Cycle of abuse. Hurt people, hurt people.
I personally LOVE the direction Barry went in this last season. It really brought together what he’s been doing the entire series.
A funnier Breaking Bad. It's really post-comedy, like Nanette. The punchline is just a punch, in the end. It's not there to make you laugh, the laughter is to help you make it until the end.
“The punchline is just a punch”
That’s a good one!
A joke without a punchline is not a joke but rather just a statement. A lot of statements are gut punches. Nanette is not comedy. Also I'm not hating if you enjoy it you enjoy it I'm just letting you know comedy has to be funny.
@@ChrisMorganComedy it's more than that, it can be an argument, a fable. Breaking Bad wasn't a statement. It was an argument, a cautionary tale, a tragedy.
And Nanette absolutely was comedy. That was a masterclass in comedy that pulled back around and hit with the punches afterwards.
Comedy is a tool, a way to illustrate something in a way you're receptive to. That's how Hannah Gadsby used it, and how Bill Hader uses it. The tragedy isn't as interesting without the comedy, and we can handle much darker ideas when it's delivered with that comedy.
@@deSloleye comedy is funny you can add every other thing in life to it if you like but comedy has to be funny to be comedy. Also a cautionary Tale is a statement.
Nanette is the worst thing ever
I think the brilliance of the show is the incredible blend of the comedy and serious moments. It makes us laugh for two episodes straight, and then suddenly there is a long scene which shows how brutal and serious the themes they discuss are. Take the finale of season 2, Barry been stumbling through comedy and serious moments, and then suddenly it's all serious and emotionally gutter punch because it violates the expectations that been set. We hold our breaths waiting for the laughter track, but it never comes.
Barry reminds me a lot of the darkness of “Fargo” or Jerry Orbach’s disconnected zingers at the beginning of Law & Order. It’s really impressive they’ve managed to extend it this long though.
Mentions of Lenny Briscoe's hilariously dark deadpan one liners get an instant 👍🏾
Little spoiler for the scene with the "death we see but don't hear", that was talked about
The kill Sally does is super metal! This is the first time I've even had to think about someone being stabbed in the eye through the side of their skull. This attention to detail is shockingly mesmerising. Someone had to actually think through this entire motion in gruesome detail. The only other time I've felt like this was when the boss guy killed himself in Mr Robot and we saw the whole thing in way to realistic (maybe even practical SFX) detail
That dude's outright shock when he gets stabbed was so well executed.
Man I thought I was the only one who appreciated little details like how realistic each violent scene is. Like when people get shot in the head with a bullet. We’ll have a scene of dead silence and quiet but all of a sudden you watch an object moving faster than you can see it just make a hole in somebody’s head with blood gushing out straight away and it’s quite shocking.
Those little details really bring it home and allow you to understand just how serious, graphic violent and chaotic scenarios like shoot outs actually are. Unlike the way they are made to seem fun and almost harmless by most Hollywood media.
Even the explosion in S3 wasn’t turned into a typical Hollywood explosion. They show you how these things violently rip everything to shreds without a ball of light to make it look cool and epic. Writing and directing on this show is on another level.
The first 2 seasons are a 50/50 comedy and drama. They dialed up the drama and dialed down the comedy in 3 to about 75/25 maybe 80/20
Very accurate. I was so confused and uncomfortable 😳 watching season 3
Barry is a masterpiece
Criminally underrated masterpiece
Barry has gone darker but they have countered that with some looney tunes AF moments.
The woman in the foreground breaking up with her girlfriend for having too many dogs while in the background Gene is chased across the yard and the dogs just keep coming 😭😂
I like the rocket complex missing the house.
It is like watching the British version of the office, like it's funny but awkward and sad at the same time
Do more Barry if you can plz... Like a vid for every season... I love the show so much
This show is legitimately one of the best shows I've ever seen. Even an unlikable character like Sally is done so well within the show.
I can only hope that in the later seasons of Barry it doesn't follow the same steps as game of thrones did... We don't need any more falls from grace.
I think this was the last season
@@Orengelable sounds like someone doesn't know
I think she grows on you
@@Mvenven I'd grow on her, if you know what I'm saying hehehe
I think it won’t be since season 3 & 4 were accordingly written at the same time
OMGGGGG i’ve been DYING for you guys to do a piece on this show ty
"MASH" also has a pretty dark theme song. If you haven't seen the film, and heard the full version, it's called "Suicide is Painless". The chorus is "Suicide is painless, it brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please."
Like breaking bad, Barry has the funniest punchlines in a dark comedy.
it's a really good show, people should talk about it more. im glad wisecrack did a video on it maybe more people will watch it now.
ahhh! i was just looking for this last night, (unaware it was next) and here I am rewarded after having just binged the show.
Thanks Wisecrack you’re the best.
Glad to see a video on this show! It's amazing.
YES! God I love that you covered this show it’s so good
Really enjoyed watching Barry. Looking forward to rewatch it
really fantastic video, wow. I got to learn a few things that'll surely help me and my writing in the future, thanks!
Great essay and presentation
Amazing analysis 👏
I have enjoyed Barry more than Killing Even and I consider these two pretty similar.
I had to pause the show several times during season 3 beacause its so intense, and OMG the finale! I was like give me season 4 right now!
Best. Comedy. Series. Ever. Thanx for the take, but you forgot the funniest part of the concept: Barry, despite being a hitman and a killer, is probable the nicest person in Hollywood and the entertainment bussiness where most people are selfabsorbed, conceited, envious, abusive, backstabbing, egotistical, greedy and stupid!
Better help is a scam sadly. It will only make life more depressing for us millennials.
P.S. - Therapists for Better Help are only paid 30 dollars an hour, which is not much for one on one therapy. If they talk to you for more than the 30 min, they will have very little time in between sessions.
Well they could quit and be waitresses and legally earn 2 dollars an hour then be constantly put down for needing tips to survive because the job is supposed to do that
In comparison 30 an hour looks pretty nice
you could compare therapists who we rely on to help us make our lives better being put in a system that almost ensures they are unable to do what they are trained to do with service workers who suffer from legalized wage theft, I guess.
Or, hear me out, see them as both symptoms of a larger problem
This is only if they do it full time. Many therapists do not and it is not meant to be a full time job for therapists.
I love this show ❤️
The way you pronounced Fuches really sold it to me that you've watched the show and definitely didn't read everything off a script
If Barry is too dark for you, I envy your idyllic life.
Diet lol
The show is so well executed that it doesn't really matter which direction (comedy or drama) the showrunners will take it further.
I wish someone made a tv sho with noho hank and villanelle 😂
Helen talking about Barry. 👍👍
You should definitely do an episode on MASH.
helen: we never buried a dead body on a hill
me: yes ive never buried a DEAD body on a HILL
Barry is so good
Where can I find transcript of this video ?
This show is criminally underrated. HBO has another gem on its hands.
Great video.
The 911 spot was a perfect time for an addbreak
this show sounds great and I love the connection of a country that is constantly waging war on others not having citizens that have good mentality when it comes to violence
I feel like most black humor is nihilistic, whereas the most recent season of Barry definitely seemed more absurdist to me.
never heard or seen this show before and now that I looked it up on imdb I can see that it might be because its on HBO
End of season 3 takes a super dark turn just so you know. Its great show though. Fair warning
That jaguar scene fucked me up
this can help take people's minds away from how 2022 sucks a lot because humor does a body good .
I am broke and depressed now have no bank account no Programs help I'm ignored by the state I'm hurting emotionally all the time .
I watch and empathize with this show because I am a veteran.
I am a bodyguard and a PI, but could just as easily been a hit man.
I would gladly have been BARRY if that was an option.
My wife's best friend just unalived himself a few months ago in a car weeks before they were supposed to meet for the first time. Chris's death was kind of like the we wish scenario, that someone did this, but no. I've wanted to watch the show since season 1 but never did. That scene hit differently. This comedy made me cry especially just because I enjoy that actor, it's like watching alpha dog again. I want my wife to watch the show but I'll give it a couple years
Perfect timing! I just finished the 3rd season!
Lady or the tiger indeed.
I couldn't help to chuckle at some instances of brutality mixed with a little bit of comedy
Great vid. I agree with the other comments, maybe ditch BH if you can, also, for the love of god or what ever you believe in, please, find a new music track for the end sequence for all WC vids. It’s a terribly annoying way to end such enriching, philosophical discussions, especially when binging multiple videos at a time. Rant over, keep up the good work.
It's true, I usually paused before the end of the video so I don't have to hear it.
this show is fking amazing
Top three shows out this year
Barry was hilarious, mostly due to Hank! I needed the comic relief
16:45 its not a contest
This show is pretty hilarious all the time
I am waiting for a video on Arcane!! :)
Throughout season 1 BARRY wonders "is this is all I'm good at?" And seeks out acting to prove that he's more than a killer, and I can't help but think that it's elegant self-insertion on Bill Hader's part, reflecting a very normal man's experience of the isolations of fame and the imposter syndrome that inevitably comes with being lauded for doing one thing well IE being an uncanny impressionist, or a star comedian, or more broadly just an actor.
Na man i play jazz piano, im not trading that for nothing lol
PLEASE STOP being sponsored by BH. They're shady AF and little better than a fullblown scam. Do better. Please. I'm losing so much respect for your guys.
Yeah, I also don't understand why this channel is legit okay with Better Help as a sponsor considering the type of content they make. It nudges me toward viewing their stuff as insincere, because BH is *DEFINITELY* scamming people with mental health problems...
@@andeddoberubetto Exactly. Wisecrack usually have videos at least slightly critical of the exploitation and corruption in the world and yet, they're conspicuously part of it!
They could make a video about their own funding sources being, well, not quite as ethical as they ought to be. It'd be funny if it wasn't real.

Frankly, Barry is just Dexter taking itself way too seriously. That show was pretty funny in its own way.
50/50 with Cristobal
Do fleabag!!!
So, first time I’m watching one of your videos. Good analysis, spot-on use of clips and I appreciate the references you provide. But can I make one suggestion: PLEASE SLOW DOWN. Your content is good but the breathless delivery doesn’t allow any of it to sink in. Stylistically I often associate rushed delivery with someone trying to slide by shady information.
Yay helennmnmmmnnnn! Great video.
Oh wow 😮
I have to say having Better Help app be the sponsor for this podcast of the psychology behind Barry was somewhat comedic in it's own right LOL i thought it was a joke at first.😂
No disrespect to those whom it can help...😊
Please do Mr. Robot
I wouldn't say that I watch Barry for humor...
This is a comedy? Thought it was a drama.
1944 Arsenic and Old Lace
It funny, like really funny and everything(except the effects) is done well.
It is incredibly funny. And so dark.
Too self absorved to realize you're dating a violent guy... Are you sure that's not called being in denial rather than being self absorbed?
Tell me sally is not self absorbed

Who's he killing again? "Yummy-mummy"s&" johnny football-star"s? Exactly, bruh,actually: I'm not a monster,just ahead of your curve...
For me the humor is how Barry can finally fix the anti-hero Paradox. Movies like The Wolf of Wall Street or shows like Breaking Bad have evil protagonists and the intent of the media is to criticize and show their errors, however, as we spend more time with the character we tend to empathise with its struggles and eventually glorify or romanticize their evil behaviour, as you can see if even Martin Scorsese or Vince Giligan have suffered on this issue, it is not something easy to fix.
Barry succeds in fixing it by adding humour to the mix, we never see Barry as a badass warrior because the show mocks him for being pathetic, it's a genius way to fix a hard issue and contribute to making the media funnier.
Conclusion, Barry is not deep and funny, Barry is deep because it's funny.
Family guy and South Park premiered in the 90s.
Dark comedy+Satire and absurdism+Surism is what I say Is live a life were the people truly are owning the means of production no need for revolution
To quote my great grandmother nana clare who although more on Right belived: "Satire is the proganda that makes us think but mostly laugh and united while proganda is Satire that of wirch makes hated" I personally love this quote she was a very intelligent woman born in 1917 died 2005 so although I never actually met her this message always stuck in my head anther quote form is about 911 "well atleast the architecture is gone its a right sore the eyes"
How did she not talk about The Sopranos?
wtf are they talking about, gallows humor has existed since shakespeare

LOL. The British were doing dark comedy way before 9/11.
OMG Barry worked coz its funny, thats all.
I honestly LOVE this show, recommend it to everyone but it’s too wrenching for me to laugh at.
I loved in the new season the car salesman just completely ignoring the incessant gunfire behind him and talking normally.
Black comedy has existed outside of television for decades. And to say that millennials are its most ardent fans is generationally myopic.
I have noticed that it is mostly millennials who fret about whether Barry is a comedy or socially acceptable, or if its themes and gore are simply too much. The rest of us just recognize it as funny. Season 3 is funny. Because it is a comedy. It is written comedically. Characters don’t need to be redeemable; as long as the jokes are funny. It’s funny.
