A good horror anime that no one remembers: Ghost Hunt. Everyone forgot it because of it's generic name and character designs, but it delivers pretty well. It's based on the ghost hunting craze of 10-15 years ago, and it delivers some pretty solid scares, good lore, and likeable characters. The execution is better than the generic premise would suggest.
Connor hit the nail on the head on why I can't watch TT videos going to sleep. I'd be halfway into the dream and the boys would start laughing at something.

@@wherestoomy8880 True, more people need to find out about the greatness that is Umineko. Higurashi got me into it and i cant thank it enough for that
The most recent scary movie that scared me so much is skinamarink. Everyone hates this movie because it's experimental analog horror that has nothing going on on screen for most of the time but just as the director said during their first screening that the movie will probably not be for everyone but after watching, try and sleep alone in the dark and you'll probably have trouble sleeping. They've literally captured that feeling of being a kid in your room in the dark at night trying to sleep and you see something weird and you let your imagination run wild and get scared out of your mind as a kid.
Honestly if done right Nightmare on Elm Street would probably be an amazing anime. Like make it take place in Japan and make the nightmare sequences really trippy . I don’t know but would definitely watch it if they did it right.
@@orvvollyonthe amount of fanservice in the manga is ridiculous, every single page has something, at least in the first volume. I dropped it after that, how pervy it was just came across as desperate and lazy and made it a serious tonal mismatch.
I think the reason why Isekai is so popular is that it's easy to write in. It's basically paint-by-number at the start usually. The reader and the main character(s) are both in the same situation and are trying to understand their new situation all while leaning on the same background (usually). This lets authors basically have their story hit the ground running. Ex: There is a world of difference between introducing a reader to KonoSuba's, Spider-Kun, Slime-kun, or Overlord; versus, Mistborn, Way of Kings, Malazan, First Law, Powdermage, etc. I'm not sure how much this is the author's fault, how much its the publishing industry's fault, or the readers.
It's funny Garnt says how fun it would be to be a scarer at a haunted house cause I actually worked at a haunted corn maze when I was a teenager and it was so damn fun hiding in the corn and scaring people
As someone who’s been a scaredy cat almost their entire life, getting into horror in general was a big deal for me as I felt like I couldn’t handle it but I’m glad I’m desensitised to it now because it’s one of my favourite genres, I’m still finding horror games difficult to handle
I always say Mononoke is one of the greatest mythical/historical mystery anime... Cause personally it wasn't scary or too unsettling, however that may be because I was too busy thirsting for the medicine seller. 10/10 definitely recommend it.
Talking about Tales of the Macabre with my friends, I think we figured out the exact way to phrase why these Junji Itou adaptations keep failing. Junji Itou has a ton of incredibly camp ideas. You look at some of his stories and the premise is just rediculous. However, he presents it in such a way that you can't see the camp, you just see is horrifyingly skillful artwork. Without that level of skill, they are just camp stories. I will say the Uzumaki adaptation is looking promising. The 45 second teaser they released shows that they are putting everything into making it look good. However, between already being 3 years late, not getting an update since last June, and the knowledge that Adult Swim's parent company axed a large majority of non-Velma animated series and I have to say at this point it isn't likely to be completed.
@@vivvy_0 I'd guess they either mean Tldr: A) Campy: as in like a spoofy horror movie. B) Camp: like a campfire story. Full explanation: A) Campy: "absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a usually humorous way." Basically just a story that seems basic and a bit mundane, not hitting anything deep. Like a spoofy horror movie. I disagree personally if that's what they meant, because I think most of his stories follow a plot line that, while it might be simple and can ramp up quickly, usually hit some pretty interesting psychological horror points that seem more focused on a person's fear than their thought process of said fear. Or B) Camp is meant to mean campfire story esque, in that they're the story you would tell to your friends if you're in a spooky mood. Usually these don't focus on too much detail, and tend to lack a lot of substance, so once again I disagree, but less so than with A.
i really like trash taste, even though i do not watch anime that much now because i kinda got bored, every time that i got a notification of a new episode of trash traste i watch it through the end, because the way the boys talk about diferent topics you know, just dudes shooting sh..t and chilling makes it really a enjoyable podcast to listen to, thanks always for bringing us this content guys and keep up the good work.
I too am a Junji Ito fan that's been burned by the anime adaptations, but I have really high hopes for the Uzumaki series - if it ever comes out - because the little teaser they released for it like 1 or 2 years ago is stunning.
When it comes to horror, I hate jump scares. It's too easy. I enjoy The first paranormal and even the first season of American Horror Story cause of how unsettling they are. I remember an episode of Buffy as a kid that gave me nightmares for weeks. Where the guys in suits who couldn't speak and floated slightly above the ground.
When the boys talked about RUclipsrs with calming voices that put people to sleep I remembered VaatiVidya. I easily get knocked out by his soothing voice lol.
It seems like a weird backhanded compliment but I absolutely understand what you are saying. I specifically listen to VaatiVidya when I'm struggling to go to sleep and it works every time. I'm a fan.
The Junji Ito manga where everyone turn into spirals really fucked me up as a teenager, I had severe anxiety and for some reason my genius brain decided that Junji Ito was a good choice to read 2h before bed. After that i got PTSD basically from just seeing spirals, it took years before i could draw a spiral without getting shivers.
The flipped POV between a killer and a victim also gets featured in the 1995 movie Strange Days (written by James Cameron!) which takes place in a world where there exist devices that can record and playback every single thing a person was feeling/seeing/hearing when the recording was made. This gets used to a horrifying effect when a woman gets violently abused and is then murdered while seeing and feeling everything from the killers POV in realtime.
Hopefully we will get to see the new ProZD episode soon, as well as Connor's crane game with him. Once again I ask in the hopes of seeing Rachel and Jun on the podcast.
My favorite haunted house is the Universal one in America. They kinda theme everything and have a bunch of jump scares while still following a coherent story line which is really cool
i showed KITE to my friend as her first ever anime, the uncut version, she actually liked it. its one of my favorite 90's OVA's. love the story, the art, the action scenes, soundtrack. its soo good.
Kinda weird that they called it a hentai, because watching it. it felt more like a movie with if i recall correctly like 2 sex scenes. I thought it was amazing
@@Bonlaws theres i think 4 sex scenes. but all last less than a minute or so. they clearly did not intend you to fap to it. they also serve a purpose in the story. even if its fucked up.
Creepypastas can get some pretty good scares outta me. The best ones have this mythical mystery built in within the entire community where it's believable enough that it's like, "Okayyy, is this real?" When I was a kid, I used to be deathly afraid of the Slender-Man in its peak. All of those slender sighting videos, hieroglyphic evidence videos and articles, and all the signs he was coming after you; especially if you're a kid. I was so scared I literally had a hallucination of him appearing outside my window! As much as I hated those days, you just don't find those types of horror experiences often.
Definitely more fun as a kid when it's easier to suspend disbelief and play along with it. It's that transition from "maybe there's a monster under my bed" to "maybe this post warning about a cursed photo circulating online is legit" to "fuck I wish real life was actually that interesting".
Ghost Hunt is one of my absolute favorite supernatural horror anime. Not every arc is a banger, but it nails the creepy vibe much better than many horror anime I have seen. I rewatch it every year around Halloween.
Horror is just as much about how you describe things as it is about knowing what to describe and what not to. Letting someones imagination run wild thinking about the unknowable its key

Thank you for talking about Trigun Stampede! The director said season 3 is dependent on how popular Trigun s1 and s2 is. Hope more people watch it bc its incredibly well made!
16:31 the coolest thing about Hereditary is that the tiny clues all through the movie that foreshadow the full plot. i swear to god, every time i rewatch it i find a new clue that pertains to the cult.
I love Japanese horror movies. They use cheap jump scares sparingly. They build suspense and show you slowly.
That ending was hilarious, they were about to go off on Conor for another hour, but they both managed to reign it in XD
Garnt sounded so dead inside trying to explain what My Life Is Inukai’s Dog was about and I honestly don’t blame him 💀
Hearing Connor say that he also wants Wario to be played by Danny Devito made me very happy
Connor hit the nail on the head on why I can't watch TT videos going to sleep.
I'd be halfway into the dream and the boys would start laughing at something.
Honestly Joey’s expression at 3:18 is one of the best still frames I have seen.
Connor too!
Just like the good ol' Yao Ming
Higurashi is still the best horror anime out there imo. Also Shiki was very good
Love the Erika Furudo pfp !! Need more people to checkout Umineko :D
I liked Another and the two you mentioned.
Me the only Person who Watched Kagewani
I can't believe the guys went through a bunch of lists of best anime horror, full of anime that barely classify as such, and none of them even cited Shiki anywhere
I'd watch the hell out of that.
I loveee anything horror. If you hate jumpscares but love slow burns and tension, id recommend
- The Others
- The Witch
- Rosemarys Baby
God episodes where the boys actually talk about anime are so nice
Definitely more in the psychological camp but Happy Sugar Life was actually terrifying to me.
Mieruko-chan is a fine horror, more of a horror to the main character than the audience, but a little unnerving
Definitely, but the not-so-subtle hints of fan service is hilarious
@@shrimpfriedrice6020 honestly it's been too long for me to remember clearly, but I don't remember a single even slightly fan service moment at all
@@orvvollyonI've watched the anime and read the manga. It is full of fanservice. Gets toned down later into manga but it has a *ton* of fanservice
I spent half of the episode distracted by Joey's mahjong earrings dangling.
1:05:37 Connor's head movement with the more silent "... what?-" is very funny to me.
It's funny Garnt says how fun it would be to be a scarer at a haunted house cause I actually worked at a haunted corn maze when I was a teenager and it was so damn fun hiding in the corn and scaring people
that seems like a dangerous job tbh.
but I live in America and some conservative piece of shit would probably shoot you doing that job.
Oh my God, that was such a great cold open... we need more Trash Taste openings like that
Talking about Tales of the Macabre with my friends, I think we figured out the exact way to phrase why these Junji Itou adaptations keep failing.
However, between already being 3 years late, not getting an update since last June, and the knowledge that Adult Swim's parent company axed a large majority of non-Velma animated series and I have to say at this point it isn't likely to be completed.
what does camp mean?
@@vivvy_0 I'd guess they either mean
Tldr:
A) Campy: as in like a spoofy horror movie.
B) Camp: like a campfire story.
Full explanation:
A) Campy: "absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a usually humorous way." Basically just a story that seems basic and a bit mundane, not hitting anything deep. Like a spoofy horror movie. I disagree personally if that's what they meant, because I think most of his stories follow a plot line that, while it might be simple and can ramp up quickly, usually hit some pretty interesting psychological horror points that seem more focused on a person's fear than their thought process of said fear.
Or
B) Camp is meant to mean campfire story esque, in that they're the story you would tell to your friends if you're in a spooky mood.
Magnetic rose is something i've not heard in a while. Absolutely brilliant short film.
I'm a fan.
i watch Vinesauce Vinny to fall asleep, but sometimes something hilarious happens and i start laughing in bed.
I watch Stephanie Harlowe. Less than 15min in and I'm out like light!
@@mollytovxx4181 Exactly. It's like he turns the From games' lore into a nice cozy bedtime story. And yes I am also a fan.
Cant wait for his armored core videos the armored core lore is fucking insane
A few horror films I would recommend are "Cabin in the Woods ", "Happy Death day 1&2", and "Freaky"
1:15:21 Connor takes his anger out on the mic and the editor lmfao you can hear the peak through the editing
Hopefully we will get to see the new ProZD episode soon, as well as Connor's crane game with him.
Once again I ask in the hopes of seeing Rachel and Jun on the podcast.
Rachel and Jun would be such an interesting guest on the podcast
No idea what they would talk about though
@@ViktorErikFade Exactly lol
@@ViktorErikFade cats
@@KlutzyNinjaKitty I mean, you do have a point lol
I suppose
Dude that would be so fun
Ghost hunt has the perfect opening to set a spooky tone
My favorite haunted house is the Universal one in America. They kinda theme everything and have a bunch of jump scares while still following a coherent story line which is really cool
Connor described the Yamcha isekai. Guy reincarnated as early yamcha goes on to change everything with his knowledge of the manga.
i showed KITE to my friend as her first ever anime, the uncut version, she actually liked it. its one of my favorite 90's OVA's. love the story, the art, the action scenes, soundtrack. its soo good.
Kinda weird that they called it a hentai, because watching it. it felt more like a movie with if i recall correctly like 2 sex scenes. I thought it was amazing
@@Bonlaws theres i think 4 sex scenes. but all last less than a minute or so. they clearly did not intend you to fap to it.
they also serve a purpose in the story. even if its fucked up.
so whats da plot
Creepypastas can get some pretty good scares outta me. The best ones have this mythical mystery built in within the entire community where it's believable enough that it's like, "Okayyy, is this real?"
When I was a kid, I used to be deathly afraid of the Slender-Man in its peak. All of those slender sighting videos, hieroglyphic evidence videos and articles, and all the signs he was coming after you; especially if you're a kid.
I was so scared I literally had a hallucination of him appearing outside my window!
As much as I hated those days, you just don't find those types of horror experiences often.
Meh
Definitely more fun as a kid when it's easier to suspend disbelief and play along with it. It's that transition from "maybe there's a monster under my bed" to "maybe this post warning about a cursed photo circulating online is legit" to "fuck I wish real life was actually that interesting".
Connor outed himself as a chronic Hanime watcher in this episode
"wtf they're talking about anime?"
"Oh they're STILL going?"
Great stuff as always! That part where garnt describe not liking to be scared i wholeheartedly agree!
Ghost Hunt is one of my absolute favorite supernatural horror anime. Not every arc is a banger, but it nails the creepy vibe much better than many horror anime I have seen. I rewatch it every year around Halloween.
Horror is definitely a genre that can be had to pull off in general
Love how garnt hugs himself in 57:13
1:50:52-1:51:24 is probably my favorite part since it's joey redeeming his animeman title back
Horror is just as much about how you describe things as it is about knowing what to describe and what not to. Letting someones imagination run wild thinking about the unknowable its key
I guess we can now categorize My Life as Inukai's Dog a horror anime it scared Connor and Joey it existed.
Connor's reaction while Garnt was explaining the plot of My Life as Inukai-san's Dog was priceless 😂
1:46:35 sorry Connor it already happened, someone made a DBZ Isekai where they came back as Yamcha who knew everything that was going to happened and became as powerful as Goku and Vegeta by the end of everything
This was a good (horror) anime podcast. We need more of this! Also, this is the first time Connor's opinions regarding anime was actually useful and entertaining. Again, we need more of this!
Glad Mononoke got the recognition but I wished they talked about it more since Connor didn't know about it
Same with magnetic rose. Joey's got not trashy taste.
1:15:20 there is no way that was actually the case😭💀💀💀 I was just as screaming gutterally as Connor did
