They have a few Su-25 Frogfoots (the Soviet reply to the A-10 program), but the A-10 is designed to survive against Manpads and AA guns. In Desert Storm, US pilots lost engines, parts of wings, and rudders and returned to base. The cockpits are heavily armored. One pilot finished her mission in Iraq with 170 shrapnel holes in her plane. Ukrainian pilots are already well trained to fly very very very low since the east is so flat, and they’ve droned or HIMAR’d over 1,200 SAM systems including dozens of radars, and already shot down all of the big Russian A-50 AWACS planes. Perhaps the US Navy could gift Ukraine a few E-2D Hawkeye AEW aircraft, which can be operated on land on short runways. It would be a tremendous asset in letting Ukraine’s Air Force know if there are windows for an aviation strike. It’s a dangerous air environment for sure, but a mix of forward deployed A-10s and some nimble AEW aircraft might allow some dedicated ground attack planes do their jobs for the rapidly depleting Ukrainian infantry. They could use the help.
