The first two are pulling the spikes out
And the next is a magnet machine that picks up the old ones rhen the next one pulls the plate out then the following machines reset all the new ones. And just think 50+ yrs ago they were doing all this work by
Hand. How do i know? My dad worked on a track maintenance crew for 3 yrs and when he was there they were called Gandy Dancers

It looks like it had just got through raining when they were working. Its good that they have some comfort control in those machines.

Great catch....very efficient machines...and their operators. This spot is just a few miles SW of downtown Richmond. ...near where Robious and Huguenot Roads intersect right at the tracks. I believe I saw this crew operating a day or two later further along and adjacent to the Hallsboro NRHS chapter restoration and storage yard . Of course, this was the Southern Railway from 1894 until the merger with N&W in 1982. Prior to 1894 the route was the old Richmond and Danville RR, upon which Jefferson Davis and his cabinet escaped to Danville in early April 1865 to try and establish a new base of operation.

Congrats on 100 subs, You even got a bonus catch of NS V08, Also, that was funny seeing a machine taking a branch down from the woods, At 28:18, If you asked, that track machine there is used to shove in ballast under the crossties and it helps extend the life of the crossties.

Absolutely amazing , I have seen thermite welds done , but never this , good job by all concerned !! CSX just leaves the rotten ties and fouled ballast on all the main lines !!

We have some of the same vehicles here in Clemson. Caught some of them the other day traveling home; flat bed, box truck, track hoe, and the same orange type, open cockpit equipment. Nice catch!

Was this shot just east of the Cranbeck Rd. grade crossing in Bon Air? That looks like my old neighborhood on Guilford Rd. The first visible house with yellow siding and dark brick is where I and my family lived from 1991 - 2007. Lots of good memories there - I miss my NS Crewe Turn freights, 1 in each direction daily. They used to run late at night, but at some point switched to daylight operation. The Barnum & Bailey Circus Train came through every year, and NS 1218 came through a couple of times on excursions in the late 1980s. One day I saw the MOW crews come through with a machine that had giant trimming blades attached to hydraulic swivels, larger versions of what lawn maintenance companies use. They hoisted them up vertically and trimmed all the plants and tree limbs back to a good distance away from the tracks. Those blades made short work of the unwanted foliage. I saw my first live steam locomotive - SOU 4501 - just a little west of this location in 1980. I just happened to look out my bedroom window of our first apartment on Huguenot Rd. to see smoke billowing out behind the shrubbery near the Robious Rd. crossing, and then 4501 popped out chugging along as it headed its excursion consist back to 6th Street yard. I was hooked and immersed myself in everything I could find out about railroads. My passion is still strong 44 years later.

Your absolutely correct! This shot is just around the bend at Cranbeck Rd. That's super cool that 1401 and 1218 both ran this line, I knew of a Southern excursion that ran in the 1980's that a buddy of mine caught but had no idea those 2 ran this line. The Southern Cresent Limited got detoured down this line aswell back in the 70's.
