How challenging has it been for you to overcome focus/attention issues when it comes to programming?

It cuts both ways for me. I find that sometimes I need to get up and walk away and just let my mind drift. If I try to force it my code usually suffers for it. On the flip side, I find that the tendency of my mind to bounce around let me see connections others don’t.

It kinda cuts both ways for me. Sometimes, i sit down(or stand up to work, that's how i do) and loook at the screen for many hours trying to find the solutions for my own projects, but nothing comes up. I need to relax so i had to stop it for about....10 minutes.
Then after a while, i figured it out. Then, sometimes after that, i get stuck again(what a pain in the butt).
The plus side of this is, i can have some relax time, then focus again

When I don't feel like it. It's grinding teeth for the first 20 minute, then my walls come down and I'm fully immersed. The key for me is accepting that I will want to do something else for a bit, but the hesitation WILL fall away.

It's been very difficult. Been at it for 3 months now, starting from scratch. I was diagnosed with ADD very young (8 years old, I think) and put on medication immediately. I absolutely crushed school when I was on adderall, but it affected my personality negatively, so I decided to go off it.
My ADD can be great for thinking creatively and problem solving, but the process of acquiring new knowledge (like learning how to program) is extremely difficult. I'm planning on going back on medication again for the short term as I continue to learn this stuff.
Thanks for the videos, Andy! They've been very helpful so far. Keep it up!

I feel like this is what I needed to hear, I was diagnosed with ADD when I was a child. I struggled in school as well had roughly a 2.1 to 2.2 gpa in high school barely graduated. I also had brain surgery but pretty sure it didn't affect much because I have been in college 3 - 4 year's post brain surgery and pulling a 3.4 GPA overall now " I need to bring it up " but for some reason I struggle with coding even in my computer science classes learning java and assembly language. It seems like the rest are all excelling and understanding concepts easily and I'm like struggling to grasp them and on the side from my main college classes I'm self teaching web development and other languages related to database and becoming a full stack developer. But this video hits really close and the video helped give me a little more motivation to keep pushing and learning as much as I can, thank you andy.

@J That is awesome to know people with similar situations, I'm doing a little better now at trying to understand code, I have talked to my neurologist about something to help with my ADD. With my specific situation related to the brain surgery he suggested that prescribing drugs related to adderall would be detrimental and highly addicting. When I was younger doctors put me on ritalin and that stuff really screwed with me big time. So right now I'm using working out and eating healthy to help me with the focus game it's kind of improving. But I was searching high and low on you tube for programmers who were self taught and had some kind of learning disability. I woke up today to do some self taught coding before I did some of my college home work and this video showed up on my you tube and it was uploaded today I was like " was this some kind of divine reason it happen" who knows but I have gained so much more motivation to keep pushing build up a portfolio and then start applying for jobs. I'm glad I found a good programmers community who are similar like me.

I've been a programmer for 22 years with a CS degree..... I am just finding out I have ADHD. WOW! This explains some things for sure. It's been truly challenging to be in technology since 1984. I could never understand how most of my peers could sit an entire day focused on their work. I get distracted during a build.. This explains why I love when I've got a specific solution I'm coding up. I feel normal and am engaged, able to sit and work the problem... Amazing I never put much thought into this condition, but at 57, I can traverse the full MS stack fairly efficiently, I just get distracted. Now to look into dealing with it more efficiently.

I needed this--I started a web dev program this year AND I've diagnosed with ADHD this year as well. I guess ADHD in girls often gets overlooked because it presents itself differently. I've always struggled with distractions and focus issues though--getting my BA was hard, but I did it and I got decent grades. As I got older (I'm in my 30's) my depression and anxiety disorders started to worsen and that really made my ADHD worse, which is how I was diagnosed. Anyway, I'm trying different medications but it's still hard and it can feel overwhelming at times. I really like coding but it is so different from anything I've done in the past--and also my 7 year-old daughter is home doing remote school and she's just a bundle of distractions--sometimes I doubt my ability to learn this stuff. I mean, I did like three other things while trying to watch this video and had to rewind it a few times. { >_

Don't stop. Understand your ADHD is a gift, and when properly used, it will allow you to create wonders. Work with your distractions, your unfocus, your squirrel-focus brain. Start with being compassionate, the struggle is real and this is difficult, and that's ok. Keep at it. You'll be fine.

This is me. I was the worst in high school. I barely managed to finish it. I thought I was stupid, honestly. That my brain is unable to keep up with other people and shouldn't even try. It didn't help that my parents were thinking the same. I was totally out of control. I didn't know what to do. I felt like an insane person and i hated myself. After high school, when others went to college, i got depression and anxiety. I started drinking and ruining my life in every way possible. I lost my twenties in the darkness. My first serious illness, when i was nearly 30, got me thinking about life, what is life, and what my life could be. Something sparked in my mind and i started working on getting out of that mess. A few years later i started psychotherapy. After some test, i learned that my social intelligence is average, but my cognitive is over 130. Jesus i was like.. whaaaaaat, this gotta be some mistake. After that, i was a new person, or more accurately, i was much closer to who i really am. Now i'm 34, having great progress both physically and mentally. I was at the bottom, but now I'm above average. Thanks to Andy here, I'm also learning code and hoping to hit that first job soon, That could really make a huge difference in my life. That would be the true end of that sad story and the beginning of a new happier life.
Please, go to doctor people, ask for real help. Family and friends can screw you badly. Even if they have the right intentions, they probably don't know shit about mental illnesses, or what is best for you. Time is the most valuable thing you have, don't waste it, get help.

I was "diagnosed" with ADHD back in kindergarten. They wanted to put me on Ritalin. But my parents did not want to admit I could have something wrong. So I ended up going through life without help. My grades fluctuated. and mostly depended on the subject. The ones that could hold my attention, like science and technology, I excelled in. I however did not have the advantage of knowing there was something wrong with me. I did not find out about this till I turned 40. Now I know why I can't seem to hold a thought for more than a few minutes. Why it's so hard to sit down and study. Being a programmer is something I have always wanted, but sadly, I held on to using Basic for too long. Today I am learning C# which thanks to me trying to learn C++ about 10 years ago is going relatively well. Even now at just about 2 weeks in I can writ fully functional console apps. But staying focused is still hard. Especially as I have a triple monitor setup, so the urge to have a distraction up on another monitor is high.
I am now working with a doctor to try and get re diagnosed and hopefully some help. If that means drugs, I can do it short term. Just long enough to get good at c# and Unity. Once I have a job, the deadlines will help keep me focused and on point. I have always been good at visualizing code in my head without needing flowcharts or pseudocode. It's why I won so many contests back in high school. So once I get the basics down, I'll likely take off. It's just getting there that is a challenge when you are battling your own mind to keep on track.

Same situation, but i would argue its a handicap. Because of bad focus, overthinking, stress over personal performance, i can sit for hours but not getting into the problem. Frustration over not beeing able to solve or learn quickly sucks. Learning is tedious and concepts take a lot of over-practicing and repetition.

I've experienced a lot of this. One thing I learned later is that it's called hyperfocus or fixation. If I'm interested in the topic, I dive in so hard I forget to eat sometimes. Like when I started learning how to play instruments, or gardening and ended up building my own grow tents and hydroponic system (for peppers. Actually hot peppers.), and definitely when it came to building custom PCs. When it's something I hate or at least not interested in very much, I drag my feet bc it feels like torture. I was "gifted" in elementary school but once high school happened, I also struggled A LOT. Civil Engineering school finally got me to focus even if I got into my particular field for the wrong reasons, learning the physics and stuff was really fun. But the actual work in yhe field .... no so much. But I really liked the modeling aspect of my first two engineering jobs so that's what finally got me into wanting to learn to code again and I am definitely neck deep in this lolol

Hi Andy, I myself have what is called ADHD. When I was younger, I had similar issues, my mind raced and was all over the place especially when I got bored of something. I found it difficult to stay on topic if the subject matter didn't interest me. I myself hated the medication because it left me feeling like a zombie, zapping my creativity and my energy. Over time I found myself learning different techniques to learn and these techniques helped me to focus and structure myself to use that hyper mental energy to my advantage. Now I find ADHD works to my advantage. The hyper mind, the inquisitive thoughts now serve me by coming up with creative solutions. One of the tools I use when I am having a moment of hyper mental energy is I journal. I write out all my creative thoughts out and come up with some interesting ideas. Writing is an excellent outlet because writing is formulative to thinking and is a great way to express that creative energy.

Take the MBTI test. I'm an INTP. There is a huge correlation between intuitive perceivers and being diagnosed with "ADD". I'm diagnosed with "ADD" and had like a 2.1 GPA all through high school. I have a 140 IQ and am now a self taught Telemetry Engineer and partner in a custom firearms startup.
The very diagnosis of ADD is relative. It means you are outside what is considered "normal". In actuality, you would never want to be "normal" under any circumstances anyway. What society considers "normal" is extremely boring and 2 dimensional. Why would anyone want to stay engaged with something that bores them?
Learn how you think. Practice self awareness. Identify the behavioral traits that prevent you from reaching the goals that you find fulfilling. Stop comparing yourself to what society deems "normal" and relentlessly pursue that which holds your attention and provides lasting fulfillment.

Start and progress slowly is the key. For me personally, I have been trying to build up the focus one at a time every day. If you find you hate yourself because of it, take it easy and give yourself a pat in the back. Stop hating yourself and try again. Meditation and exercise also help. I use Headspace (great meditation application by the way) and try to at least train my focus 10 minutes every day. It does take time. But it is surely progressing.

ADD is the worst. I constantly lag behind my peers, I am listening to my teacher or my peers talk about information and I can't follow or even remember what they said when all the other kids do it fine and are able to respond, engage in the conversation, and remember the things they learn. I am amazed at how they do it but for them it is easy. I remember none of the information I learn. I feel like I will never be in a leadership role because I can't listen to or remember anything, I am unreliable. I can't even do job interviews or meetings or discuss ideas with my peers. I just wish I had a normal brain like they do. :(

What defines usefulness or uselesness though? While I'm somewhat aware of how neurophysiological differences affect personality, I don't see no reason for you to feel useless. We come from the hunter gatherer background, and some people are more of gatherers and some are more of hunters, even though most of us physically fit can cope with the most basic tasks. I think its important for you to note that we, as a species and a 'collective', are still struggling with living in the society, and the latest technological development affects the economy in such a manner that most of us feel like we're missing the pace. This isn't the case though, and you shouldn't feel behind, as all of us, as individuals, reap what we haven't sown. Even the cars people drive are made out of materials our ancestors had mined and gathered for centuries. At schools, we're really taught the not so complex stuff that is complexified both by how its taught (including the inability of the teachers of understanding the topic) and how its not suited (as teaching material) in the modern reality.
Some learn by repeating formulas and memorizing them, but it's far from any genuine innovation. Some, like me, fail to see profit from knowledge even though they understand it's a neccessity if you want to follow the systematic path.
I learned the most out of the subjects I were interested by, and outside of school. The sooner your brain realizes it's cool stuff you can learn, but taught in a really boring way, the better you're be off to yourself, and not neccessarily comparing to others. You can write, and it wasn't the case for everyone 100 or 200 years ago.

@plneet! Sounds like some of my thoughts from the highschool period. The thoughts I decided to reject and humble self, while realizing that people work with what they got, regardless of what it is. You don't have to be harsh to yourself in order to become humble. Opinion of self isn't really objective either, and while we can set our goal of being righteous, it's really beyond our cognition to judge righteously, even ourselves. I'm not the first to preach, but I'm fairly certain maths are as logical as underlying semantics, and you will be able to grasp the difference between a finite and an infinite function. Thus, I conclude you are able to differentiate the fundamental laws and realize that being 'humanely' righteous isn't exactly the same as 'infinitely righteous', unless at moments of enlightement, a man can speak what 'mirrors' the universal truths and righteous laws. To me, your personal opinion of self is as foreign as their opinion of you.
I'd conclude that as much as you claim to fail over certain areas of science, you also fail to realize the 'infinite potential' you posses. Would you have researched and dug into the available information, you'd realize it's more common of an issue you're describing. More over, it's a simple observable that trees don't force themselves to grow the rootstock into the air, or sprout their leafs down beneath.
Now, what does the tree expect out of itself, I can only imagine to be the fruit.
I do like to reffer to the earliest days or, if you take it as tales, but we have been told to make the land for ourselves; but instead,.turned out we decided to rule other people, and not the land.
My only tip for you would be to stop being jelaous, and to stop doing so at the root, you can consider to stop judging. As long as you stick to the infinitely good, yet, made 'simple enough' for us to conprehend laws, you'll feel better off than partaking in the race.
Self reliance in this case isn't that much about what you need, but rather, what you don't need.

Let me set this straight, you want to code cognitively, but your brain tells you it doesn't make any sense and won't be of any value to you. Your brain decides that whatever decided it is a good idea is a 'no no', which makes you feel worthless. Coding is a waste of time.
Thats how my ego perceives it.

@plneet! My personal opinion on high level programming is, it's stupid. It works, but it's stupid, just like throwing sticks st each other for no reason. And it has nothing to do with how the electronics are designed, nor the ingenuity between the work-arounds, which I actually find intriguing. You claim to have a differently wired brain, well, so do I. If you want to come up with something thay serves the same purpose but isn't stupid, so am I.

watching this video while on Vyvanse 60mg lol. If you have ADHD/ADD, you will know how much medication will affect your ability to understand/process code and retain the information. the medication also affects how fast you can type your code and figure out what you need to do if youre stuck. With that said, medication is not a substitute for bad study habits. you still have to put in the work.

Correct. Medication is only one of the many tools available to you. It is just that, a tool. It is not a cure, as much as some people wish it to be. Lifestyle and behavioral modification is a must. Self CBT. Most of us are fascinated with tech, and have the smart phones to show for it. Use it as a tool. Reminders, scheduling, notes, task managers. All of it.

Man, it's crazy how alike we are. I really struggled at school but not because I didn't have the brains. I know I could of easily got A's or B's if only I could of controlled myself and my inability to concentrate, I was always so easily distracted, still am. Now as I am older I want to learn programming, always have done but I am struggling to focus. I think it's about time I got a diagnosis. If the meds can fix my ability to concentrate nothing will stop me.

It drove me insane to sit in a chair and look at a book. This followed me through high school and even affected my college education. Short to say, I wasn't doing so well. I just want to say thanks for this video and its really nice to know someone out there with ADD was able to become a SELF-TAUGHT software developer. That is a huge accomplishment, be proud!

Then on third year, i started android developing. After sometime, i lost interest and i was learning unity. Then i changed track for another job and now i forgot coding and get repelled by it. Every time i had a goal and a vision and an enthusiasm. But somehow it fades. I don't know how to keep the goal to one thing. And in Cs , i think there's so many languages and so many applications, its easy to loose focus.

But I mainly started really understanding scripting in 2019 then it’s been an upward spiral because I can hyper focus on scripting and game development but I quickly lose attention after a few days In the project and start a new project with a idea I’m more interested in (btw the reason I was always interested in the studio for roblox as a young kid is because I was pulled into roblox by that one ad they had about “create your imagination “)

By the way, I noticed these uneven spots of soap fat (?) on the lenses of your glasses
What has worked for me to eliminate those is washing the lenses with the same kind of liquid detergent I use for doing the dishes, I just pour a little in the concave side of the lenses, let some water over it (not enough to rinse off the detergent) and rub the lenses gently but firmly with my fingers
Before that with my previous glasses, I would use this solid soap you use for shower to wash them, and it'd very often leave these spots because I wouldn't rinse all the soap off

One thing that seems to help those with ADHD is creating goals like you said, then breaking it down into very small pieces. Then reward yourself with a break. So work 5 minutes, solve problem, take 5 minute break, return. So the question I have is, can you incorporate this pattern into your work flow. Or even better, can you utilize the hyper fixation into coding (although after time I find this will be a chore).

I have ADHD and I really want to do ethical hacking with degrees in biology and physics but I feel stupid because I can't focus for long periods of time. I really need mediation, but finding the right one is tricky. I can talk about white holes, and viruses, and a little bit of computer stuff but at the end of the day I still feel stupid because I'm struggling to stay a float while my peers can focus and can succeed. I'm doing some programming stuff on Khan academy and its so much fun and I really do love it but its not in the area I want to be in so in some ways its meh but I can hyper-focus till I get frustrated but I still think about it when I'm not doing it. Its all I think about is practicing coding and programming on Khan Academy. It has heavy down falls but I think in a way some good advantages.

So funny that actually I feel the opposite. I have no diagnose (I haven't go to the doctor already) but I really think I have any ADHD of attention disorder. I am almost to get out from college on an IT degree, but coding some times or reading documentation or go ahead with an course feels like an torture, I mean I really love computers, I relly love what I study, when I have a project in the course to follow, investigate feels easier (thats the only thing that actually resonated with me haha). But when I am out of the classes I do not really feel any motivation to keep, I'm afraid that I wont got a job because I do not have an nice github portfolio, or any extra studies by my own side, in contrast to my peers, some of them have got meaningfull laboral experience.
I feel a bit behind because I am still strugling with understand how my motivation works, when I was a kid I did awesome during school and highschool, but as long as the only activity that was funny to me was playing videogames, I'm nowdays struggling with getting motivated for any other activities that are not playing something, or watching a serie.
However, I feel I'm improving, I am almost like 2 years in learning to meditate, some times with more or less consistency, I am trying to eat healthier, do some workout, trying to reduce the time I play videogames or watch series and I relly see multiple benefits in different aspects of my life, but with learning and sit to code I am still struggling, but I'll keep doing myself along this journey and reach a better me ^^.
Sorry haha I needed to get this out of my system, and sorry if my english cant be understood at any part :p.

I'm studying coding at the moment as a second year I.T. student. I have never been diagnosed but have thought that it is possible that I have ADD especially after an ex girl friend mentioned that she thought I show a lot of symptoms of ADD, I have always been very daydreamy, cut people off in conversation as I cant wait my turn to speak, have difficulty following instruction, trouble organising myself as well as trouble focusing for long periods of time amongst other typical ADD symptoms. Although, I don't want to say that I have this as I have never been diagnosed its just speculation, nevertheless, I have always been worried about my ability to be a software developer given that I feel my cognition may not be as suited to coding as more focused individuals who really hone in on detail and can sit in front of a computer for hours without getting distracted. I think whether I really have this condition or not, just keeping at it and trying is the main key, if I could just learn this skill to a respectable level I believe that even someone who is a bit more distractible than others should be able to handle been a software developer. I have gotten decent results so far with mainly distinctions and high distinctions and 2 credits. so I guess I will just see where this course takes me and if I can get through uni I don't see why I shouldn't be able to apply and handle the tasks of been a developer in industry.
