The title of the movie, "Ground Hog Day", is where the trope & popular term about repeating the same day over & over came from in the first place! The fact, that you were familiar with the trope but didn't realize, that it originated from this movie, "Groundhog Day", ruined it for you. Before this movie, Groundhog day was just a day honoring weather folklore, & people wouldn't have expected it having a time loop premise, like you did

The mayor is Brian Doyle Murray, Bill's brother.
The original script mentioned that Phil Connors was trapped in the time loop for 10,000 years.
Director Harold Ramis initially estimated that Phil was stuck for 10 years, but later revised his estimate to 30 or 40 years.
A calculation by Wolf Gnards, a pop culture writer, estimated that Phil was trapped for 8 years, 8 months, and 16 days.
Another calculation by WhatCulture estimated that Phil relived the same day approximately 12,400 times, which is equivalent to around 34 years.
In an interview, Harold Ramis mentioned that Phil was trapped for a “lifetime”, which is a subjective estimate.
It’s worth noting that the film intentionally leaves the exact duration of Phil’s time loop ambiguous, allowing viewers to interpret it in their own way.
what nobody points out is this question. how long was he wasting time repeating his old behavior before he started learning skills, learning the townspeople, helping others etc. we cant know if it was more like 1 year or 1000 years that he wasted. it would take 30 or 40 years to accomplish the positives that he was demonstrating later in the movie, which is the reason for harold ramis and "whatculture" estimates. but they dont address the first question. how long before he got serious about living?
no human could withstand that for 10,000 years without going legit crazy, so if it was in the script is unrealistic and insane anyways. 30-50 years seems reasonable.
I think it's more like 3-5 years to change his ways, learn new skills, and become a better person. the people that estimated how long he was looping made some stupid assumptions, like we can only learn 1 thing at a time, it would take years to speak 1 line of french that well, mastering card throwing would take 10 years, things like that that have no basis in reality, they just made it up.
the writer/filmmaker said they purposefully don't explain how long, or how, or why exactly he's stuck there, just that he has to change his ways to get himself out. i can see why religious philosophers like it, as it's about self-discipline and kindness helping you in the eyes of a higher power you can't possibly understand.

When I was in college, we made road trips out to see the Groundhog.
The old man's repeated death is the most poignant turn in the story. At one point earlier, Phil asks Rita what she would do if she only had one day left to live. Phil himself reaches a point of despair where he keeps trying to escape by killing himself, but here's the old man unknowingly "re"-living the last day of his life, over and over, in poverty, unnoticed, and uncared for by anyone else in the town. And there's nothing Phil can do to change it other than attempting to make his last day comfortable.
I think that Phil really started to believe himself as some sort of deity and the old man dying and him helpless to do anything snapped him back to reality and showed him that not everything was in his control.

I always thought of this movie as a type of ‘Christmas Carol’ where a Scrooge-type-person has to learn to be a nice person and that’s what stopped the loop.
Bill Murray actually did a movie: ‘Scrooged’ which you should see if you haven’t.

This movie is a metaphor for the Hindu and Buddhist concepts of karma and reincarnation. When Phil was selfish, lustful, prideful, cruel, and suicidal, he developed bad karma and was cursed to repeat the day over and over. When he devoted his life to helping others, learning and bettering himself, friendship, and genuine love he developed good karma and achieved nirvana and was blessed with a new day in paradise.
We don't know how long Phil was stuck there, but you can imagine how long it would take to become fluent in French, learn to ice sculpt, and become a professional level jazz pianist... then think about the idea that learning French was just one step in trying to get to know Rita.
I think the old man was there for a very important reason. At one point, Phil claimed to be a god... the old man is God's way of showing him otherwise. Life is his alone to take or give.
One of the most interesting things about this film is the effect it had. Clergy from all different religions have claimed this film as articulating the central message of their faiths. It seems to speak to everyone, because it simply says the only thing that can make life worthwhile is to stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about others. True generosity of spirit is what counts; not what you have for yourself, but what you do for the world. That's why the cause of Phil's predicament isn't important. What's important is how he got out of it - by finally learning to be a loving person.
The actor who plays BUSTER is Bill Murray's real brother. They were also in other movies together. Not to mention : Caddyshack
His goals changed as he learned new details about everything that happened on his loop day.
The groundhog day trope you are talking about is only a trope of timeloop because of this movie. If not for this movie, no one would say that as a reference point.
Only a few shots of the highway were filmed in Pennsylvania. The entire rest of the movie was filmed in and around Woodstock, IL.. a little northwest of Chicago. They have held their own Groundhog Day celebrations ever since the movie became a success.
My dad used to say, "If the groundhog sees his shadow, it means there'll be six more weeks of winter. If not, it'll only be a month and a half."

Great reaction. I love this movie. I typically stop whatever I'm doing when this movie airs. The lesson, as far as I can tell, is to never stop improving yourself even when you're faced with what seems to be insurmountable odds. That, and at the end of the day, love wins. I enjoy a lot of movies staring Bill Murray - Caddyshack (1980), Scrooged (1988), What About Bob (1991), Larger Than Life (1996), just to name a few that I recall. I like the fact that he occasionally is willing to take a hit. Not only several slaps across the face, but also the part where the snow shovel bounces off the back of his head while he is talking on the payphone. That scene cracks me up everytime.
The town itself is a magical entity that can't stand someone like Phil hating it, so it makes him relive the same day over and over until he changes his mind and decides to live there.

Well this is just a movie but what I learned about life is try each day your best day. I almost dyed 30 years ago . I was left in a coma for 3 months. Simple things in life are beautiful.
It's a great movie to watch, over and again, like on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It's funny, upbeat, and it also demonstrates a good amount of character development in the personality of Phil Connor. Bill Murray is an eccentric person himself, and that makes him perfect for this role. I usually always watch it when I see that it's on. ❤
This is one of my favorite movies with a valuable life lesson that you can watch over and over. It is adressed to individuals who find themselves trapped in the routine of daily life and the nature of Groundhog Day serves as a metaphor for the monotony and challenges that people encounter regularly. It suggests that the solution is to try to make the best out of the situation so that often times opportunities start to show themselves, making you realize that they have been there from the start and that no magic fortune kicked them off but your own change in mind.
As many have already mentioned Bill and Brian Doyle Murray (Buster) are brothers. They were both members of Saturday Night Live - Bill ('77-'80) and Brian ('80-'82) and had previously worked with writer/director Harold Ramis on the film Caddyshack, which Brian co-wrote. All Chicago natives who were members of the Second City comedy troupe, they also wrote for National Lampoon.
Ramis directed other films starring members of SNL and Second City- Stripes (Bill Murray, John Candy), National Lampoon's Vacation (Chevy Chase, John Candy), Ghostbusters (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd), Armed and Dangerous (John Candy, Eugene Levy), Ghostbusters II (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd), Stuart Saves His Family (Al Franken), Analyze This/Analyze That (Billy Crystal).
Also, Larry the camera man (Chris Elliott) and Doris the Waitress (Robin Duke) are former SNL members.
This movie is kind of a modern day Beauty and the Beast- an unpleasant man is cursed, and the only way to break the curse is to learn to be a better person and win the love of a good woman. Phil Conner had to not only be nice and do good things for people, he had to become a better person just for the sake of being a good person.

Groundhog day is a real thing. They use the groundhog because the German migrants that brought the tradition to the USA couldn't find the Hedgehogs that were used in Europe. Mainly Phil had to get over himself and actually improve himself and help his fellow citizens just because. There are estimates that he was stuck in the loop for about 30 years. Good reaction.

The Universe was teaching Phil a karmic lesson. Kind of like the three Ghosts in Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and Phil is Scrooge. Phil was "chosen" because he had great potential inside all along... he just needed a swift kick in the rear. The filmmakers have said he was stuck in the time loop for around 30 years, give or take. And yes, this is THE movie that started the trope.

So Groundhog Day is also a big deal in wiarton Ontario Canada. The groundhog is named Wiarton Willie. He draws a good crowd every year.

Until this movie, Groundhog Day just meant the day where the groundhog came out and we wanted to know if he saw his shadow. The movie is what developed the trope of the over and over and over day.
Supposedly, in the original script, Phil was dating a Witch but cheated on her so she Cursed him to relive the same day over and over until someone fell in love with him.
"Why is this happening..." watch SOMEWHERE IN TIME... another popular movie where this exact situation happens, including the piano song Phil learns to play. But they explain the concept of the time travel he's experiencing. GROUNDHOG DAY and TITANIC and SOMEWHERE IN TIME should be sold as a box set because they are very interconnected, story wise. TITANIC doesn't use time travel though, they use a flashback.
A popular theory on why Phil is repeating the same day is divine intervention. God.
Phil is being forced to live the same day as a test to see if he can learn to be a good person. To love himself, life, and others. He was probably trapped in that loop for 100s of years. Going from gaming the system like a child playing GTA. Committing horrible acts on himself and others. Trying to learn tricks to manipulate woman. Then finally seeing the value of all the learning. Art, peoples lives, a community, and himself. Phil had to learn the lesson of being a kind and good person. He helped people because he truly wanted to. He received love, because he was freely giving it to himself, and others.
In the end the why is started happening (there supposedly was an idea that a former scorned lover of Phil’s putting a curse on him) isn’t as important as why it stops. He had to become a better person and his reward was Rita’s love.

Usually..., usually you have to wait like 5 years and then someone might say, hey remember Groundhog day?, and they make a reference. Or you might remember something about the movie yourself. In your everyday life, normal life you may find something that relates to an event in the movie, you may see a parallel. Then later you might want to see the movie again and it might mean different to you. We could tell you 20 things about the movie but there's no rush. If there's a connection to be made with you it will usually be much later. We've seen this movie many times. Phil had to spend a lot of time, had to use up a lot of time. What is it about? What is living about? Did Phil find the answer to the meaning of life?, and if so what is it? Did Phil get to "live" ? Did he try everything? We could try things ourselves and maybe find and understand things differently later. Did Phil learn a lesson and change? You can think on that later. It looks like he changed. Does life change you? Is growth allowed for anyone? If growth catches everyone then you also is at risk for growth. Watch out for that shadow...! Oh you mentioned "authentic" now that's something isn't it? 🙂 Wasn't the Jeopardy game funny? It works like that.

i just watched the real groundhog day clip from 2024 in pennsylvania, and it looks wildly similar to the movie so they emulated it well in the film. nbc news streamed it here right on youtube lol

There's a 1993 made for TV film called 12:01 with the same type of premise that was adapted from their original 30 minute short from 1990. It's a comedy but also has a serious tone to it. The writers actually tried to sue the makers of Groundhog Day for plagiarism but nothing ever came from it. It's a pretty good movie and you should definitely check it out since you said you enjoyed the time loop type genre.
It starred the guy who played Red on THAT 70S SHOW. And it was not by any stretch of the imagination a comedy. It was a horror story of a man who was stuck living forever in a time window of 1 hour and it ended when he commited suicide and found he couldn't even escape it doing that.

The groundhog superstition has European roots. The Germans would observe Candlemas , or "Badger Day", where if a badger emerging from its den encountered a sunny day, thereby casting a shadow, it heralded four more weeks of winter.
Other countries believed that the hedgehog, the bear and other animals could predict the weather and the coming of Spring.
The Pennsylvania Dutch of the late 1800's are famous for starting the tradition in the USA.
This movie is about the perils of hedonistic pleasure. The driver of the film is how a man (or even a woman) would soon get bored with manipulation if it went forever. Our end is actually a gift of God, as is our life.
This is a spiritual movie
what's the movie supposed to be about? he's growing, evolving, LEARNING life lessons...like you said at first he's confused on what to do and just tries different material pleasures, like one often does in life, until you learn that alone can not satisfy you. you mentioned what's the point of the old man. the point, in short, is to learn to accept death, and to accept that he can't always change somebody's plan or help them. there were many lessons, but ultimately it seemed to stop when he said "it doesn't matter what happens tomorrow, i'm happy NOW". as others have said, it's a very philosophical movie about life in general. perhaps you're still a bit too young to fully grasp it.
As for the why of the time loop I like to think it’s likely higher powers intervening to put him on a better path. Phil is a self loathing miserable person in the beginning and through each loop he still hates himself and is miserable in some form. I think on the last night when he says “no matter what happens tomorrow I’m happy now” was what broke the loop. He finally was the man he wanted to be and was truly happy even knowing the day would reset.
"Did you know he could ice sculpt?" Now that's something. I'd like to be able to ice sculpt. First I'll need a giant block of ice... Need to be in a cold state I think. It's not easy to do that in warmer climates. I guess if you take lessons, if you could take an ice sculpting lesson they'd tell you "today we'll be making a porpoise." Otherwise you'd have to think of something yourself while you stare at a giant block of ice. Sure you could learn to do it but what would you sculpt? I can't think of anything.
When we see Phil ice sculpting, he was concentrating on it, he was too busy to talk. We didn't see him showing off. That means he was a real artist in that moment. How many hours do you need to become an artist?
Many days and weeks. Probably a few years. You have to carry that in your life as something you will do now and then over time, maybe spend a lot of time doing it to become good and then you'd do it much less later unless you do it for work. The reason to be an artist is the same reason a mountain climber when they see a mountain they have to climb it. It's good for a person to have something that maybe they do only for themselves. On a side note it creates character depth... and it puts you in touch.

I believe that behind the film there is a sort of unintended but expressed philosophy, in other words he didn't live life really and somehow life became all the same for him, the other people had appeared in a certain sense, he was the only one who noticed the loop, so the underlying sense is all about him for some obscure reason.
The only way to get out of it was to live his life to the fullest, truly bring out his soul and it happened that he got out of that loop, he was no longer the person he was before and therefore free.
managing to conquer the girl coincides with the end of the loop, it's just a coincidence or no, i dont know, but a nice coincidence.
My understanding is that Groundhog Day is like Easter without the religious side of it. It's just fun for the kids.
Until this movie, most of the country was unaware that anyone even celebrated Groundhog Day. It was just something they would announce along with the weather forecast on Feb. 2. It was more of a farmer's almanac related idea, so they'd know when to start planting their crops. Fun for the kids???

The why behind is that we all live the same day over and over again. Not all the time, hopefully not our whole lives, but repetition is the way our culture works. You have to learn to accept the silly people around you, and even love them. Then it won't be winter all the time.
Or more cynically - be a good, corporate drone. If there's something wrong with the world, it's your own fault, and you need to look inward to fix it. Don't think about joining a union or anything like that. But I doubt that's what the writers went for. 😄

Sorry, but I think you missed the whole point of this movie. The goal is not simply to "get to tomorrow," but Phil was stuck in the loop until he could change his ways. Before he was an egomaniac, arrogant guy and then he became an empathetic, kind and selfless person. I think the point is that we can all change, even if we don't have to experience the same thing as Phil.
On the other hand, the fact that it is never explained why the time loop occurs is one of the main merits of this film, because it leaves it open to interpretation. I think it's a metaphor that tries to show that, although our life may be repetitive, it does not mean that we cannot make small changes in the way we are.

Yeah, she totally missed the point. I was going to give my thoughts on what I felt it was about, but everyone knows the premise. Maybe because it wasn’t her type of movie it kinda drove by her which is okay. As beloved as this movie is not everyone will love, again, which is fine. This is one of my favorite movies.

For someone who posts Bible verses, knowing "why?" shouldn't be an issue. If one believes in God, one cannot fathom his/her motives nor why they pick the messengers they do. For others Phil is just stuck flipping from universe to universe where his own choices creates the parallel universe he goes to next perhaps at the whim of a mad scientist who is mapping choices to outcome due to quantum mechanics and keeping everything but Phil as a constant. And the scientist realizes that since Phil is now happy and content so he'll stop making different choices and creating new universes.
As far as the old man, that's the point Phil realises he's not a god and he can't save the old man no matter what he does that day. It eliminates the sin of pride.

just about everybody that sees this movie. They’re surprised he commits suicide so many times. But you have to put it in Contacts no matter what he seems to do. He’s stuck in the same day. People don’t realize how long he is stuck in this day. It is over 33 years. He repeats the same day. I’m sorry, but that’s gonna have a negative effect on just about anybody. No matter what you do nothing changes that’s really gonna screw with your psyche..
