I met him in Ethiopia a few months before he passed on, what a humble soul he was!! He shook my hand like i was very important and yes to him i was. Rest in peace Hero of Africa.
"You don't get to sing a song if you have nothing to say" My god, if the whole music industry could hear this. If every artist today could self-reflect on this thought.
I remember my first trip to Africa, I had only been there a few days and was on an overcrowded bus from Zimbabwe to Zambia and the bus stopped at a fueling station late at night. I knew little about Africa and even less about African music but when I heard the sweet musical tones that was probably Oliver and his band on the small speakers at the station I was hooked. My life was never the same again. I was lucky to see him perform twice in Melbourne many years later.
I also had this feeling in Martinique when there was a car on the road every hour. once once a woman stopped and we were in her family I think it was one of the most beautiful moments of life it was simple me her parents quiet the songs animals of nights
We have a daughter who has cerebral palsy and is non-verbal... she loves Tuku so much... we were planning to either invite Tuku to our home or take her to his concert that did not happen due to his illness and eventual passing... May your soul rest in peace Tuku; looking forward to seeing and meeting in the next life.
I truly believe God doesn't duplicate talent. It's only you and you alone and there is no better you than you. Show us who you are an we learn from you- Tuku
You are right, each one of us is created to bring something special and unique to the world. For Oliver, it was Music. There comes someone like him once in a lifetime.
Wow! i was so blessed to meet Bro Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi twice before he left us, listening to this beautiful healing sounds, makes me feel brand new! I'm big fan of him and a big fan of his guitar sounds!
Just visited Zim, and heard Tuku music everywhere! This guy is one of my heros. Amazing interview, and amazing performance. Cheers for putting this together guys. Wow!
Saw him last evening at live performance. He has wonderful stage presence and provided a two hour concert to a packed audience. He is a virtuoso - blending traditional sounds with contemporary style. See him live if you have the opportunity.
Tuku is not bound by genre, belief system, or culture: he beautifully expresses the human condition common to all. That's art. I've been a Tuku fan for many years, and was so fortunate to finally see him perform live at Jazz Alley.
I,m Moza/xangana, I do not understand xhona anyhow TUKU's songs excites my heart and evokes spirits of all xanganas, particularly of my family-I'm very proud of TUKU; thanks god.
Well sound music, Its an honour to listen to this legend. I only had one chance to be in his live performance in my life. I would like to attend another live performance. He is a matured wine, he sings wisdom. Thanks for the great music indeed
This guy is amazing; his music hits the soul softly and lifely!. RIP SAMANYANGA!, ran into his youtube music after stumbling onto another great singing bird from Malawi,Gidde Chalamanda!! May your music inspire this & future generations!!
I am seeing Oliver for the first time on video but so familiar with his sonorous voice for years. Thank you for bringing this great musician to RUclips. Despite his greatness he still humbles himself. Great lesson indeed from a great man. I love his music even though I do not understand the language he sings in. Great man indeed.
Here is something special. This man is far more than just his music. His teachings, his outlook and his deep intuition is something to soak in to your bones. Listen, enjoy. Breathe it in, feel yourself growing, and all you have to do, is sit there and take it in. I've heard that the best things in life are free, and now I am quite sure that this is true.......
had the chance to see him alive several times in Harare! pure joy!! pure moments! ces concerts resteront graves dans ma memoire a tout jamais... this continent is FULL of talents and genius! Peace
Music is one of the languages that bind all humans, spoken in many dialects, spanning the globe. You may not find every single facet personally pleasing, but its presence throughout all cultures is an unmistakable sign of our shared humanity.
Turns ur solemnity into joy,a lugubrious atmosphere is transmogrified into a sphere of hope as tensions are diffussed.......A true cultural icon and Shona brand ambassador truly patience and pespiration pays!!!
Love the interplay between guitar and bass. They complement each other perfectly. Peaceful music with lovely singing arrangements. Makes me feel so good
We here on the day he left this world. Your God given gift brought to the world. From the streets of Norton to the world... Thank you for gracing the world...
look at those fingerpicking skills and all them feels. they must really love to make music and they do a great job transmitting the feelings to the listeners. i love kexp for having such mixed talents coming to the studio.
This music arose a lot of emotions. Without even hearing what is being said, the instruments does the best work of connecting you to the sphere he is /was when playing. Thanks Dr Mutukudzi.
Pure Roots music. Takes you to your good place with your feet planted firmly in the earth. This music is felt. It means whatever you mind can conjure and can be different each time. Always a big fan. Hoping to catch his concern sometime. Even if I have to travel a great distance. Kudos to the band and the 2 beautiful ladies singing backup vocals.
Oliver you are just a legend of Zimbabwean music, you command a lot respect among us your fans. I am just sorry for your seed your were grooming and unfortunately death took him. I like your strong character.
This is a great video. I just saw them live last night and it was--words can't even describe it. It was amazing. He's a huge, charismatic presence and all of them are stunning musicians. So much love and joy. If you get a chance to see them, do it.
I'm a massive Thomas Mapfumo fan but i have to say Tuku owned this interview here like a boss. In terms of Zim music, Tuku and Mapfumo are way ahead of everyone. I'd be nice if they recorded a song or 2 together.
During Ian Smith's time, they used to perform together in Harare and Gweru before they split with members from the band they shared to form Black Spirits and Blacks Unlimited respectively.
I now know that the real universal language that exist among humanity is music, even though I don't understand the language in the songs but I can feel the message, message of peace, self belief and universal happiness.
2024 still listening to one of the greatest musician. You were loved by the world. Continue resting in eternal peace.
