During the autumn of our lives, all we can do is just think & question what if? (Ghalib wrote that about himself). Here he is noticing the darkness of his own cell. When we are young we do not think about getting old & facing the most unexpected surprises. I am glad to walk into the sunset with some inkling of what lies ahead. It is a good feeling I have seen enough light & I can carry some of it for my times ahead.

mm rahman sahib ur absolutely right..all the world's wordsworths and keatings cannot match or equal Ghalib.. God has blessed this land with Immense talent..Ghalib is unmatched. jagjit singh ji's voice brought us closer to Ghalib.
When life draws its curtains on one, and only darkness becomes visible, Ghalib, sung by Jagjit and acted by Nasir, speak for you to the world. Not only old age, but youth too also has its intricacies and uncertainties that make Ghazals, like this one, appropriate to anyone like me. Oh! Ghalib!
He is grieving over the loss of the end of the Mughal Empire when in 1859 the Sepoy Mutiny failed the last Baadshah Bahadur Shah Zafar surrendered to the British East India Company outside of Baadshah Humayun's tomb and his sons were rounded up, forced to take the tops off and were shot in the chest by Major General Hodson, had their jewelleries removed and were left out for the people in Delhi to see their dead bodies. The spot were they were shot became known as Khooni Darwaza.
Your historical accuracy out of this Ghazal context is no doubt correct but in this very act, Ghalib is griveing over the sudden demise of his younger brother Yosuf Khan who was a schizophrenic patient from a young age and later died in Delhi during the chaos of 1857.
daaGH-e-firaaq-e-sohabat-e-shab kee jalee hooee ik shamma`a reh gaee hai so wo bhee KHamosh hai [ firaaq = separation, sohabat = company ] 13. aate haiN GHaib se ye mazaameeN KHayaal meiN 'GHalib', sareer-e-KHaama nawa-e-sarosh hai [ GHaib = hidden/mysterious, mazaameeN = topics, sareer = scratching sound made by a pen, KHaama = pen, nawa = sound, sarosh = angel ]
Ghalib research scholars ney ye bhi likha hai k by "Sareer" he means, itnee khamoshi ki "Khama" yani "Lakri ka qalam (wooden pen) sey likhnay ki bhi aik awaaz mehsoos ho rahi hai lekin ye awaaz darassal Farshiton k parron (wings) k pharrphanray ki awaaz hai jo ye qalaam (mazameen) ley kar utar rahay hai jabkay Ghalib sirf likh raha hai, uska apna ismayn kuch bhi nahi.
even after studing and following Ghalib from last 20 years. I highly doubt that a person of such high calibre will find it ok to add a "wooden pen" as an object of importance in such high level Ghazal. nope. this verse is actually very simple albeit the use of words by Ghalib is of complex mixture due to his status in those time making himself top poet. ghalib was in sort of competition in those times. thus, using complex words in simple ghazals make sense as he has to be on top. Ghalib Sareer-e-Khama-Nawa-e-Sarosh hai = ye jo shandar kalam me likhta hun, darasal ye me nahi hun, ye farishtey hain jo allah ke paas se ye kalaam leke aa rahe hain aur me bus usey likh raha hun. yahan kis tarah ke pen se likh raha hun, ye important nahi hai. pen ke likhne se aane wali awaaz bhi yahan important nahi hai. yahan bus ghalib ka kalaam aur farishtey jo is kalam ko lekar aa rahe hain ye important hai.
Any award in the world is small for this act of Nasiruddin Shah. No one else could portray a tired, helpless old man in grief, like Nasir sab did. No one! 🙏👏

आपकी मेहनत को सलाम
When life draws its curtains on one, and only darkness becomes visible, Ghalib, sung by Jagjit and acted by Nasir, speak for you to the world.
Not only old age, but youth too also has its intricacies and uncertainties that make Ghazals, like this one, appropriate to anyone like me.
Oh! Ghalib!
Possible to get the entire lyrics in English
داغ فراق صحبت غم کی جلی ہوئی
اک شمع رہ گئ ہے سو وہ بھی خاموش ہے

Ghalib is legend and will live forever in our hearts
हुई मुद्दत के गा़लिब मर गया
पर याद आता है।
हर इक बात पे कहना कि यूँ होता तो क्या होता।।

Listening This Adorable Soundtrack In 2020_
He is grieving over the loss of the end of the Mughal Empire when in 1859 the Sepoy Mutiny failed the last Baadshah Bahadur Shah Zafar surrendered to the British East India Company outside of Baadshah Humayun's tomb and his sons were rounded up, forced to take the tops off and were shot in the chest by Major General Hodson, had their jewelleries removed and were left out for the people in Delhi to see their dead bodies.

Ghalib research scholars ney ye bhi likha hai k by "Sareer" he means, itnee khamoshi ki "Khama" yani "Lakri ka qalam (wooden pen) sey likhnay ki bhi aik awaaz mehsoos ho rahi hai lekin ye awaaz darassal Farshiton k parron (wings) k pharrphanray ki awaaz hai jo ye qalaam (mazameen) ley kar utar rahay hai jabkay Ghalib sirf likh raha hai, uska apna ismayn kuch bhi nahi.
YOU ARE A ... THE EVILLL OF OUR WORLD FUCKK YOU ASSSSSSWWWWHHHOOLLEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bahut he umdah tasreeh kia
Very well explained! Thank you
even after studing and following Ghalib from last 20 years.
