here's the thing, I don't always agree with your personal views/opinions etc, but you present your ideas without vitriol and stupidity, and I appreciate that, and I appreciate that I can hear other perspectives presented in an intelligent and coherent way. That people are getting whiney over video game opinions just blows my mind though.
This is exactly the lesson I taught myself years ago when I noticed my cognitive dissonance of basing my identity on my hobbies and realizing that being obsessed with my hobbies and building a hill to die on by basing my self worth on the hobbies isn't a healthy way to live life. You can't learn new things or be open to new ideas/things if you make it so that the thing you like defines you as a person so you cant move away/on from it or get new hobbies. As I've grown up I've learned how to just treat my hobbies as hobbies instead of treating it as a part of me that I need to defend to the death.
That's depressing to see people actually attack others over something that is literally make believe. Don't get me wrong, I love TES and the lore with it, but at the end of the day, it isn't worth getting salty over it because it's fucking fantasy
I like how you know so much about the psychology and methods behind marketing and growing a brand, yet you decide to make a moderate income off something you enjoy doing. Respect to you sir
Well said. I love how there is a larger, transferable message here. There are number of scenarios in society where tolerance is unjustly demanded and people can & will claim offence on just about anything which invades their personal sphere. I maintain the opinion that offence is taken, not given.
Indeed. He was so spot on about how some people attach their ego, identity and/or self-worth to some concept or belief. It makes them inflexible and incapable of seeing a different point of view or even the bigger picture. Such people do view criticism of that thing they like or hold dear as a personal attack and so they lash out.
I don't claim to be smart in any way as far as the lore goes. But I think the way you present your perspective of the lore actually makes the lore understandable. Even the metaphysical stuff though confusing at times is understandable.
Keep up the good work, Lord Lorebeard! But in all seriousness, you provide a clear and concise entry into the lore. As a young lorebeard with wispy tendrils on my wee tiny chin, your vids helped me tackle a lot of the more confusing aspects of TES lore and even encouraged me to find out my own answers and delve deeper. I was NOT into the lore before I watched your vids, but since then, I've really found a new joy and passion in researching it more, so thanks :D keep up the awesome work, man.
Also loved your ideal elder scrolls series. What I am about to say might sound like heresy, but I'd love to see an ideal elder scrolls about daggerfall and arena - if anyone could do it justice it'd be you
The problem is that the things we like are part of our identity, just as aour memories, i mean what do you do when you try to describe yourself to someone that doesn't know you? yeah, you tell them what you like and what you don't like, that's why being a bit offended when someone criticizes the things we like is pretty normal. But no matter how normal this behaviour is, we should always try to listen to criticism, so that it can help us find flaws in our reasonings, if there are any, and therefore better ourselves. With politics listening to criticism is extremley useful, the other side could have some good ideas. Religion however is a different thing, you either accept it in its entirety or you reject it.
This was an interesting watch. I look back on how much happier I am today compared to when I *DID* identify with certain groups and your logic seems legit, as I am much happier now (come what may.) Liked!
Damn, three and a half minutes in and I gotta thank you big for this!! It's so great to see somebody with an audience actually address this! Fucking hell.
I actually really like the Christianity analogue. Your like the Catholic Church, with set scripture and canon, and the Kirkbride crew are like the Gnostics who accept many narratives even if they conflict with each other. In this context the word apocrypha is actually very fitting.
As someone who dwells heavily on political RUclips - Gotta say, you have the best commentary on tribalism in general, even out of the usual talking heads on here. The reactionary attitudes, and painting the enemy as the worst, spot on.
Hej Zaric, This kind of obsession people are willing to put into some imaginary things is troublesome. The 'lore community" and TES related communities in general are an interesting microcosm which draws many parallels to the real world. Your peeks into these worlds are interesting and educating, given that you understand the social dynamics behind it and comment on it. Passion is fun, obsession you project your psychological issues into is dangerous.
Reading through Facebook comments makes me miserable, because it seems to me that the people there are not grounded by institutions like definitions and ethics. Watching someone respond to a pack of Facebooker's and seeing it's success made me happy.
You know when Dexter observed his sister and her friends having a slumber party and saw them as monkeys? That's the most acurate portrait of the human species.
DUDE you're awesome. The reason the hate you is because you say what you mean. And you believe in what you say. unlike so many other people. This is why I subscribe. Because you know what you are talking about
This video is exactly why I'm subscribed. I love the logic and shapero esque explanation of tribalism. Keep up the good work and I will always say "salty" with the same tone you used in this video. A1
I dont think there is any fundamental disagreement here, I think your just reminding people their fantasy isn't reality. When you say things like "c0da is fanfiction" or "Bethesda owns the right to elder scrolls so only they can decide what is true in universe" your putting a lot of stress on people's ability to ignore those things; In other words your threatening or even breaking their suspension of disbelief. Your not really wrong about anything you say, but these are things the lore community has decided to deliberately forget. That's why they respond so angrily to you, its not because they necessarily disagree with you, they're just trying to maintain a particularly delicate state of mind.
Jed How is he putting alot of stress on people.. every company that owns something decides what is canon and what is fanfiction.. Just look at Star Wars. Disney erased almost every book and game that was not made by them from canon. It works like that in every game or movie.. Only here in TES comunity people act like fanfiction is real.. next time Bethesda creates a TES game people will be pissed because their fanfiction is not the way they know it.
Tom Fassinger You realize people in the star wars community are pretty pissed that disney up and decided every single official work in the franchise's 30 year history outside of the movies didn't happen Doesn't help that they then revealed their plans to milk the series dry with bad cash-ins for the next decade After a certain point, death of the author kicks in, nobody gives a shit about copyright law
The internet is full of people of all ages. When an absurd argument ensues, it's probably because a younger + immature person is involved. So I wouldn't bother so much with them.
When you troll a whole group so hard that they claim to have your nudes, and then you upload another video schooling them on not being beta. Nice meme my friend nice meme.
It is utterly ridiculous to me that people get so up and arms because someone had the audacity to disagree with them. Even if that person didn't even know they existed before the heckling.
Okay, I enjoy the elder scrolls games. I occasionally enjoy your lore videos. All I have to say is, who the fuck is sothas. There is no question mark, because that was not a question.
Fun fact: around 80% of all interpersonal conflicts are caused by misunderstandings. (And could therefor be solved within minutes) Misunderstandings can base in both misinterpreting what the other side sait, but also and just as likely, by people not saying what they really want to say (basically, interpreting your own choice of words wrong.) Obviously, as we always know ourselves what we want to say, we have a hard time understanding why the other one does not seem to understand or even misunderstand. - Considering this, it is some kind of miracle that we humans somehow achieve to not kill each other on sight.
Could be he was simply trying to provoke you to respond, then was put on the spot by you, and actually had to come up with something to save face. Good segue into the topic though. Of course I could be wrong. Conscientiousness is the key. I have a friend who plays Skyrim on PS3, before you could mod on console, and when I told him I got the PC version, so I could get the mods I wanted, he went into a tirade that I was somehow committing sacrilege. When I explained to him that Skyrim was just a game, he was incensed WTF. He won't even look at a modded version of Skyrim, to him the idea alone is totally unacceptable. Oh well I suppose some people "Need" to feel that they are being heroic even if it's to defend digital code.
Yeah. I'll never understand why some people will hurl abuse at others over simply disagreeing on something like what abstract number should be associated with any given game, or anything similar.
Hey, can someone pass the link of Zaric's Discord Server? I tried to enter on the brazillian one (because obviously I'm brazillian) but they're just a bunch of Kirkbride worshippers that think C0DA and Kirkbride are 100% cannon, and cannon in TES is too much "relative"
Zaric man I love your videos man and there is so much I want to say about everything you do on this channel that I wouldn't be able to cover it all so... I CHALLENGE YOU TO A SPICY CHICKEN WING CONTEST. WHAT SAY YOU, FRIEND?
Want to hear something Fascinating? If it weren't for the comment I posted on Zaric's 5 things I hate about Skyrim, "Zaric, the reason why the nords don't follow the old Nordic pantheon is because their culture was influenced so much by the imperials and the arrival of tiber septum (talos). That's such a weak point to make. For example, imagine European settlers in the 16th century interacting with the native Americans. They took their land and introduced different branches of Christianity to them. Kind of how tiber septum (a breton. Just so you don't think I don't know my lore) and the imperials influenced the nords when tamerial became one big happy empire."He probably wouldn't have made this kind of video. And by the way, that comment is not my current belief on that topic. Crazy how one individual can affect some LOREBEARDS on youtube.
Wasn't there an Elven star ship (Magical, but still a ship to travel between stars in the void) called the Sun Birds, and didn't the Empire attempt to make their own, but stopped the project as they saw it as too expensive? Furthermore, people are saying that Oblivion is actually space, and as the Sun Birds travel through Oblivion they are space/starshipsJust asking, as you clearly know more than I do (having only played ES Skyrim and reading through the wiki, and you having a whole channel about it. You have a small channel, and as such I have hope that this comment will not be lost and I can finally find out if this is true, as I have been wondering for quite a while now.
Honestly, I am a big fan of Sci Fi and Fantasy (Well, Sci Fi movies and games, Fantasy Books and ES) to find out that one of my favourite game franchises based in fantasy also deals with metaphysics AND extra-terrestrial travel and colonisation would be brilliant, though if this is not true it means that I am no longer trawling the internet for answers, so a win win.
A good example of Fantasy and Science combining, Reymond E Feist's RiftWar cycle, a fully fantasy book series that I adore, yet it explains the magic through hints at String Theory, wormholes, etc.
Yeah looks like that's canon ,since the source is an ingame book that pretty explicitly says that miners brought celestial material and built some stuff with it. elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Pocket_Guide_to_the_Empire,_Third_Edition:_Birthsigns And if you care about the out of fame stuff by Kirkbride: www.imperial-library.info/content/forum-archives-michael-kirkbride
Haven't visited reddit for ages, so this might be less valid now, but look at r/shittyTESlore (and even r/TrueSTL) compared to r/teslore for a case study in this. The contrast is very telling. It's not just that r/teslore is a place that suffers from the ludicrous 'canon doesn't exist, but at the same time, my headcanon is canon' disease... or that so many answers are based on wild speculation or just plain headcanon rather than actual canon (even if that canon is retconned or dubious)... or that this headcanon is painted as incontrovertible truth... or that it's misleading (or outright confusing) to newbies who might just have come by to ask a question about the Dragonborn only for the regulars to reel out ideas like mantling (which as an example is AFAIK purely OOG). It's that, all the while, they have no sense of humour (or humility). It's a sign of dogmatism when definitions are twisted, opinions are mistaken for object fact, and questioning the status quo ends up with people flipping the table. Meanwhile, those 'joke' subreddits are full of people who know the lore, love the franchise but are able to poke fun at it, and appreciate MK without being zealous Kirkbridians. Of course MK is a good writer, of course he has a brilliant imagination, and of course c0da is great fun... but come on, it's completely nuts fanfic, not the word of Jesus or something! It's a real shame that a universe as deep and expansive as TES' attracts so much bigotry and ideology.
I've been asking to myself why make a big deal of a question made out of curiosity, where people answered their opinions just for the people who wanted to be in that thread. Why everyone had the need to answer, despite saying they didn't care! Now it all makes sense. You guys have some sort of history, then. We can't leave ego out, then. Apparently.
Because OOG lore is usually much, much more interesting than what Bethesda is currently doing. Don't know about you, but I think voidships made out of genegineered moths with giant ziggurats strapped / fused to their backs is better than... Skyrim's tiny Alduin.
yeaa that sound like some one was smoking pot/skooma even if some of it is better it only cannon if it get put in the game like the infernal city got put in the game as a hist tree fell out of the sky it seem them book are part of the lore now same goes for ESO if it get into TES 6 it part of the lore also these lorebeard seem to be adding/ telling there own version of the lore when as a lore master you should only bring up factual history of TES
your on about the goblin club right it does more then deadric bar deadric battle axe and warhammer only down side apart from ugliness is that it needs frequent repair also that dlc put i think they count to cannon even if it stupid
"also these lorebeard seem to be adding/ telling there own version of the lore" That's because these people seem to think that their C0DA is the one and only and is the true lore. Similar to all these holy books, so many out there and everyone thinks theirs got it right.
I am relatively new to your channel however I will say that Sci-fi has been a part of elder scrolls for awhile thanks to the dwarves steam aminculi wich are more sofisticated than most of our robots
If you want a recent example that proves this, try mentioning The Last Jedi in a comments section with Star Wars fans. Both its defenders and detractors will be stupid and petty to prove their points. And yes, I am baiting these people on purpose.
eh TES lore is a hot mess we all love, people need to grow up and realize this. it is okay to love something that is poorly put together, i mean i love sharknado
As one of these audience members who hasn't read in game lore books, does anyone have some recommendations? (preferably oblivion, skyrim or marrowind.)
killer weeaboo breathing water. It's in Morrowind and Skyrim. Long setup but the last paragraph ties the story into something that just made me laugh for quite awhile. Oh hmm....And if you want to read some really WEIRD STUFF the lessons of vivec. I want to say it's sermon 4 or 5 with the dwemer created chimer clones out of their mechanical tech. And that just one of the tamer ones. I think there is a complete dramatic reading of them on RUclips. There's another book I'm thinking of but I can't remember the title. If I remember it I'll find it. Oh and abcs for barbarians. Literary gold. But short.
both skyrim and morrowind is fine there a mod for skyrim that bring the book from morrowind to skyrim if that help The Annotated Anuad is a good start it the creation myth and it a good bases History of the Empire, all of them give you a history on the empire and that pretty far back and then book on your favorite race/religion in TES
"You don't explain the lore like I want you to, but canon doesn't exist,"
currently growing a sexy lorebeard to complement my fedora - lock up your daughters
M'lord
You'll need a caine, If you really want to look like a lorebeard
Mythix the Dragon M'Serra
ImRonan my daughter's already hide from me
You just triggered that whole group so hard
The tribe is displeased
+CaptmagiKono i think there puting together a raiding party
here's the thing, I don't always agree with your personal views/opinions etc, but you present your ideas without vitriol and stupidity, and I appreciate that, and I appreciate that I can hear other perspectives presented in an intelligent and coherent way.
That people are getting whiney over video game opinions just blows my mind though.
People can be very petty when they attach their egos to something they care about .
This is exactly the lesson I taught myself years ago when I noticed my cognitive dissonance of basing my identity on my hobbies and realizing that being obsessed with my hobbies and building a hill to die on by basing my self worth on the hobbies isn't a healthy way to live life. I like how you know so much about the psychology and methods behind marketing and growing a brand, yet you decide to make a moderate income off something you enjoy doing. Respect to you sir
TBH I hadn't heard of CODA until I watched you. and I'm shocked people think it's canon
Zaric, are you sure you haven't achieved Chim and earned enlightenment or something?
4:13 - 4:44 You have no idea how much I respect you for saying that. I really wish more people understood this.
You are such a smart man- I am honestly in awe when I watch any of your videos. Never stop, please.

Some people can just talk about anything and still have your attention
This guy is one of those people.
"Self confirmed hypocrisy a feature not a glitch." I like the way you think Zaric
Nooooooo ... not the last video of this topic. :,( I was expecting it to be a series with multiple seasons. I am loving this.
21:12 The sound he makes when he "sacrifices" the mubcrab cracks me up every time.
Lorebeard?! I like it. Take it with pride Zaric!!!!!
Lord over all the beards in TES!!!
One of the biggest problems with media consumers (and other things), which the internet only amplifies. I strongly agree with you about this issue.
Zaric, you are the most open minded man I've ever had honor to listen to. Don't waste your time and energy arguing with these idiots.
Hej Zaric,
This kind of obsession people are willing to put into some imaginary things is troublesome. The 'lore community" and TES related communities in general are an interesting microcosm which draws many parallels to the real world. Your peeks into these worlds are interesting and educating, given that you understand the social dynamics behind it and comment on it. Passion is fun, obsession you project your psychological issues into is dangerous.
You crack me up, my dude. I've been binging on your vids all day
I start to think that Kirkbride did some really big damage to the TES community.
maybe it created division in the lore community
you can't make sense of madness it better to ride it
Reading through Facebook comments makes me miserable, because it seems to me that the people there are not grounded by institutions like definitions and ethics. Watching someone respond to a pack of Facebooker's and seeing it's success made me happy.
You wanna hear a personal attack?Your uhh..tie..was slightly off center in this video compared to others...boom roasted.. jk love ya zaric
High Top how rude
+High Top
You just broke my immersion so hard
Thanks, now I can't stop focusing on it.
I am deeply triggered from watching that poor, innocent mudcrab being sacrificed in a daedric ritual!
"Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, Michael Kirkbride?" - Facebook 2017
Oh hey. I think I know you!
Zaric, would you ever do a video on what is established canon or how to spot what is fanfic and what is canon and where lore fits?
You know when Dexter observed his sister and her friends having a slumber party and saw them as monkeys? That's the most acurate portrait of the human species.
DUDE you're awesome. The reason the hate you is because you say what you mean. And you believe in what you say. unlike so many other people. This is why I subscribe. Because you know what you are talking about
Sometimes, I look at a channel's about section for some reason, on it I found a typo. "I *tend* to focus *tends* on the Elder Scrolls"
Damn, Zaric is more savage than ever.
yeah all the blood and entrails and he's eyes shining red can't belive it
This video is exactly why I'm subscribed. I love the logic and shapero esque explanation of tribalism. Keep up the good work and I will always say "salty" with the same tone you used in this video. A1
I always learn something every time I watch ur videos, love ur content! great work!
Pretty much the only thing I get Triggered at is people who even slightly dislike argonians
*TRIGGERING INTENSIFiES*

After a certain point, death of the author kicks in, nobody gives a shit about copyright law
I kind of hope one of these people featured in the video comment to this video as well...it sounds really entertainment in kind of a weird way.
The internet is full of people of all ages. When an absurd argument ensues, it's probably because a younger + immature person is involved. So I wouldn't bother so much with them.

Nice meme my friend nice meme.

i dont even really give two fucks about elder scrolls lore and i still think this guy is the shit.
Okay, I enjoy the elder scrolls games. I occasionally enjoy your lore videos. All I have to say is, who the fuck is sothas. There is no question mark, because that was not a question.
This is another great video zaric, its pertains to more than just video games.

He hit him with that "seek therapy." Evan should, he's an angry little fellow.
17:12 I see Zaric did the same thing as me. I also looked up Lorebeard on RUclips and only found his channel.
I am patiantly awaiting that Warframe vid. 😉
Gabriel Edwards can't wait to see Zaric in Fashionframe.
Could be he was simply trying to provoke you to respond, then was put on the spot by you, and actually had to come up with something to save face. Good segue into the topic though.

Zaric Zhakaron i agree with this, nothing wrong with trolling a troll as long as you are the one laughing.
Yeah. I'll never understand why some people will hurl abuse at others over simply disagreeing on something like what abstract number should be associated with any given game, or anything similar.
I appreciate the way you handle beef....precision! lol
What was that video in the end?
The lore guy at ESO doing God knows what to a crab? Good video anyway. As always!
He was sacrificing the crab to Kynareth, in the hopes that a lightning storm wouldn't cut off the stream. Hes a funny guy, I think
Skullcrusher430
Lol
This is a good argument for ending humanity.
rip crab
This video proved to me you're a reasonable guy. Good video!
Excellent video and valid points!!!
Funny how a lot of channels I follow are getting into the whole debating misinfo and criticizing identity politics. Not that I'm complaining.
I'm the wrong sort of people. No, I only asked Evan one question, I asked him why he was angry.
Facebook is already dead
WTG ye it died in like 2010
N-nani??
Wronnnnnng retards
NeedMorePuppies twas but a simple joke without the elements of a joke
It died for real around the time the boomers discovered it. I'd like to spare my mom and gramps the tragedies of my social life thank you very much.
Zaric man I love your videos man and there is so much I want to say about everything you do on this channel that I wouldn't be able to cover it all so... I CHALLENGE YOU TO A SPICY CHICKEN WING CONTEST. WHAT SAY YOU, FRIEND?

And if you care about the out of fame stuff by Kirkbride:

It's a real shame that a universe as deep and expansive as TES' attracts so much bigotry and ideology.
i wear my sunglasses at night
No matter how you explain yourself, people are going to continue to misinterpret you and make reasons to hate you.
Zaric isn't salty, he's pickeled. Badum-tish
This crab must die. EEGGH EEIGHH EEIGHHH EEGHGH!
Apparently.
Really great video good video about fandoms
I think your my favorite youtuber
Sothas is the guy from the facebook group you Nick named dickons lol
cannon is only cannon if it in the game i don't see why people still don't get this
Because OOG lore is usually much, much more interesting than what Bethesda is currently doing.
CommanderM117 in Morrowind, some goblin weapons do more damage than daedric
your on about the goblin club right it does more then deadric bar deadric battle axe and warhammer
only down side apart from ugliness is that it needs frequent repair also that dlc put i think they count to cannon even if it stupid
Dwarves and their technology is more of a Steampunk than Sci-Fi.
How does it feel to know you'll be called "lorebeard" from now on?
Holaaa mi amigo!
The worst part of this video is that it had to be made in the first place
As soon as you mentioned zelda I went to play twilight princess
If you was drop in to a Elder Scroll game what type of ability would you give your self.
A handycap hehe
I enjoy the lore of TES but i have alot of my own ideas that make no fucking sense to anyone but me.
NaZtRdAmUs that's okay. It means you understand you.
Lot of importance
you are a fucking king Zaric , never change
Welcome to National Geographic
If you want a recent example that proves this, try mentioning The Last Jedi in a comments section with Star Wars fans. Both its defenders and detractors will be stupid and petty to prove their points.
And yes, I am baiting these people on purpose.
Who is our favourite person on RUclips and why is it Zaric?
This mentality is everywhere...ugh
How you expect them to change the pace of an open world game where you decide the Pace tho? (zelda)
Do you have a lore video coming up soon?
Wow you have 3 internets!!!
Lucky I only have 1...
Please oh please nobody start a new Kalpa of saltiness
I wonder if it's possible to mod the first 2 Elder Scrolls games to make them more.. accessible. I know Morrowind has mods like that.
Crimson Night not really. Daggerfall has that remake some people are doing though.
eh TES lore is a hot mess we all love, people need to grow up and realize this. it is okay to love something that is poorly put together, i mean i love sharknado
