  • Live BBC radio broadcast from the chapel of St John’s College Cambridge, 29 November 1981. This is the very first live broadcast of the Advent Carol Service from St.John's College Chapel, on Advent Sunday, 29th November, 1981. The choir was directed by George Guest, and the organ students were Adrian Lucas and Andrew Lumsden.
    As the BBC's Music Adviser to the Head of Religious Broadcasting and producer of the programme, Barry Rose, together with Canon Colin Semper (then Head of Religious Broadcasting) and Ian McIntyre (then Controller of Radio 3 and a former graduate of St. John's) instigated what has now become the annual broadcast.
    Barry Rose recalls: “On this first occasion, the Chapel was jam-packed with a huge congregation (George Guest even rehearsed them in their hymn-singing before we went on air), and since it was the first time it had been broadcast, we asked the Dean of Chapel, the Reverend Dr. Andrew Macintosh, to introduce the Service and set it in context, before the choir sang the opening Advent Prose in the Lady Chapel.”
    1. The Advent Prose (“Rorate caeli” Mode i)
    2. Hymn: Hail to the Lord’s anointed (“Crüger”)
    3. Syon, at thy shining gates (G R Woodward, arr George Guest)
    4. A tender shoot (Otto Goldschmidt)
    5. There is no rose (John Joubert)
    6. Jesus Christ the apple tree (Elizabeth Poston)
    7. Hymn: Lo, he comes with clouds descending (“Helmsley”)
    8. King Jesus hath a garden (Dutch melody, arr Charles Wood)
    9. The Linden Tree Carol (German melody, arr Reginald Jacques)
    10. Hymn: O come, O come, Emmanuel (“Veni Emmanuel”)
    11. Sans Day Carol (John Rutter)
    12. Ding, dong, merrily on high (16th century French, arr Malcolm Williamson)
    13. Magnificat in G (Herbert Sumsion)
    14. Break forth, O beauteous, heavenly light (Johann Sebastian Bach)
    15. Hymn: O come, all ye faithful (“Adeste fidelis”)

    The golden age of St Johns College Choir under George Guest! It will never return... The pure sound of the Choir I admired so much doesn't exist any more.

    I have been inspired by the balance of timing, the proper diction & overall musicality which inevitably leads to higher worship. I was blessed to hear this choir since 1968 at Johns. I was often the quest ( pun intended ) of Jamie Snead who earned a PhD from 1978 -1981. The Organ scholar was John Scott in ‘78. John would give his last great service to The Lord @ my parish St. T’s Fifth Avenue. I also have to thank Barry Rose for my participation in Lammas Records recordings & distribution in The USA.

      Dr George Guest CBE was indeed a superb musician who deserved the highest honours that could be bestowed upon him. Sadly, he was never knighted and therefore may not be referred to as Sir George.

      @@brianmckay1236 What a shame talented men like he aren't knighted, whilst Elton John and his highly immoral lifestyle does... Men like Guest honestly do much more than E. John for the majesty of the Crown.

    Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
    great David's greater Son!
    Hail in the time appointed,
    his reign on earth begun!
    He comes to break oppression,
    to set the captive free;
    to take away transgression,
    and rule in equity.
    2. He comes with succor speedy
    to those who suffer wrong;
    to help the poor and needy,
    and bid the weak be strong;
    to give them songs for sighing,
    their darkness turn to light,
    whose souls, condemned and dying,
    are precious in his sight.
    3. He shall come down like showers
    upon the fruitful earth;
    love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
    spring in his path to birth.
    Before him on the mountains,
    shall peace, the herald, go,
    and righteousness, in fountains,
    from hill to valley flow.
    4. To him shall prayer unceasing
    and daily vows ascend;
    his kingdom still increasing,
    a kingdom without end.
    The tide of time shall never
    his covenant remove;
    his name shall stand forever;
    that name to us is love.
