  • Voters are going to the polls in the UK's general election. The opposition Labour Party is the overwhelming favourite to win - and end 14 years of Conservative rule. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a surprise call for early elections - a decision that is projected to backfire. Recent polls show voters are deeply dissatisfied with his government. And Keir Starmer's centre-left Labour Party is on course for a landslide victory. The cost of living and the state of the health care system are among the key issues for Britons. Still, Sunak is hoping that he can sway undecided voters.

    Elections in the UK are governed by the 'first past the post electoral system'. Which gives the Labour party approx. 40% voter support but approx. 70% of MPs in parliament. I am happy to live in a country with proportional representation where 40% = 40% and not 70%.

    • @sirgo0se97
      @sirgo0se97 10 дней назад +8

      It’s designed to avoid conflict in parliament around constantly having to adjust policies to every party that has a voice in it. It isn’t as significant for more local elections however, I can see proportional representation being fairer but also a bit trickier to both implement and maintain in our circumstance.

      The UK has had continuous stable government for over hundreds of years thanks in part to FPTP. It has a stablizing factor because it produces a clear majority and the said majority is almost always moderate (median voter theorem). Whenever the opposition wins, the opposition has a high possibility that it doesn't differ too much from the previous ruling party and thus producing a stable, continuous government all the while still following the direction of the general population's opinion shifts.

    • @robertsandiford6223
      @robertsandiford6223 10 дней назад +13

      @@sirgo0se97 Adjusting policies to every party who has a voice in it, is another way of saying taking into account broader society, not just doing what the ruling party wants. So many of us know that Brexit was an abject failure and much to do with our malaise, but no one has the cojones to talk about it. The UK is suffering the same problem as Canada, Cost of living, worsening healthcare and education systems being overburdened by mass unchecked immigration that is bleeding taxpayers and the social systems dry !
    Both countries need to focus on their own population and their social systems and build them back up to be able to sustain the populations and provide better services because it is just getting worse and worse as unsustainable numbers of new mouths to feed and house flood into the country year after year
    Canada has a been absorbing over 1 million new people a year for a decade now under Trudeau and it has bled our economy and our social systems dry and they are failing as it is unsustainable
