When the lighter popped in the toaster oven but didn't burst into flames, I was thinking "I hope they don't go right over to check it out", and then Jaime went over to check it and then the flames suddenly started.
As a kid who grew up in england, i can confirm this myth. you just remove the metal top and throw it at a wall or floor so that the gas output hits the surface.
It has happened to me TWICE. Once in India and another time in Australia, both times when the car was left in the sun and the temp exceeded 44C. I did not see the lighters burn or explode but I left a lighter on the dash and came to lighter bits in the car so..... yeah. I guess now that I see the video I realise I was lucky there was no fire.
yeah it actually kinda surprised me when i learned that even though they work together very well and have respect for each other that they don't actually get along that well. They always meshed really well in the show and even the times they did get mad at each other just seemed like to buddies hazing one another
I left one in my car in long term parking at the airport in the summer. Came back a week later and there were just pieces of the lighter all over the car.
I've had one blow up in my car in the center console..blew purple plastic every where. Lady parked next to me at the convenance store was all upset when I came back out saying my car just blew up..lol
I once had a 12 oz. soda can explode inside my car, I had left it in my car's cup holder, completely and perfectly blew off one end of the can... It looked almost machined like...
I think there is a lot of variance in quality between different brands and makes of cheap lighters, I almost never have any issues with one brand, while I started avoiding another because the top housing plastic parts tended to catch fire when lighting things that just take a second longer to light like a new candle. The worst I had was a sudden leak and burst of flame when I was lighting a cigarette, threw it away in reflex and it made a small explosion when it hit the ground.
I had few times gas lighter explodes in a car. But that is just plastic fracture, no flammable explosion. Simply, pressure of propane/butane mix is too high for the lighter casing to withstand. But, without source of ignition, nothing bad happened.
well sure. the reason it has so many warning labels. stupid people doing stupid things. but perhaps at the same time there was a redesign. less pressure, thicker plastic... not just slapping a warning on it but also fixing it a little so to mitigate the risks of it happening again.
If I remember from an interview correctly his dad is a swedish immigrant. It's common for your kids to get a hint of your foreign accent happens all day every day in the United States.
Regarding what was missing in the test for exploding lighter inside the hot car - cheap Chinese lighter. I've seen that exploding several times. It's made of one layer of really fragile plastic
I heard a story back then when i was a baker: Some guy was baking on the fryer... the a lighter fell out of the shirt into the frying oil. As far as i know all you can do is run and hide
The thing they didn't factor in the car windshield is time. As a smoker leaving it up on ir dash for a while in the hot sun won't do anything. But leave it up there in Texas after a couple days and it will have significantly puffed out and weakend the plastic enough to where u don't even want to touch it.
I had one explode in the car I was driving in Zimbabwe. The lighter was a flat-sided type and was resting on a black vinyl arm rest. It exploded but thankfully didn't ignite.
the dashboard scene hapened in my car! dont know how hot it was and if there was a fire, but i found the exploded parts of my lighter as i returned to my car!
I live near death valley, it has everything to do with the windshield and I park pointed south so it's worse. Every year around May I forget a lighter on the dash because I've gotten lazy over winter, and then pick up pieces of plastic. I was walking in front of the truck once when one popped, it sound like a 22 going off.
I wonder if the sun directly on the lighter and any magnification effect, especially if the lighter was clear or opaque, would affect the possibility of it exploding.
So the last part took place in san fran? Mot too sure how many people would have complained if they would have taken that particular city out but 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
They were testing if the car can reach enough temperature to make it explode INSIDE the car, and that didn't happen. What you do after you take it out, is not really the point...
Well why not? Unless you think he is underestimating it, it's definitely at least 1m^3 of butane. I don't know how much butane is in a single generic BiC lighter, but I suppose it is enough to fill up a space of 2x1x1cm cube?
Off brand blew in my sunglasses holder in my tiburon. 2009 California summer. 110 degrees. No fire, but it blew the plastic tray out of the ceiling. I looked outside at night and the dome light was on. I thought someone broke into my car. But the explosion turned on my dome light. It must have been pretty powerful.
I had a few lighters blowing up in the car, happy i wasn't inside, bic are very good lighters. The ones that blow in my car were cheap Chinese lighters
I've left a lighter on my dash and came back to the car on a hot sunny day in South Carolina and there was a massive burnt hole in my dash lol. They definitely can explode in those circumstances. It was a cheap, clear lighter not a bic.
i expienced that lighter exploded while i"m holding it after i light my cigarette. the butane of the lighter is low and it is high noon. i feel just a pain on my hand but it didn't bleed and not even a scratch, only pain.
i was a t Ozzfest one year and it was hot as balls and I thought someone threw something at me and hit me in the leg. I spend a good 2 minutes looking around like a tough guy expecting someone to be throwing things at me. I went to smoke a butt and found my lighter was broken in my pocket and no fire.
speaking as someone who both wears a lot of denim and has been showered by countless welding sparks, I call bullshit! denim does not catch fire like that
So I got a lighter stuck in a metal casing I cannot take appart on my balcony ceiling (don't ask) and watching this made me feel better. No way anything catches fire in that metal boxing and concrete.
Ok but what about this scenario- while welding your lighter goes up in flames in your pocket.you stop, drop ,roll . Upon impact to the ground you fall on the burning lighter ,fracturing the casing causing a sudden expulsion of butane (to an already flaming lighter /denim ) causing it to explode . Myth Confirmed
I left a lighter on car dashboard all day,in Summer, came back to find lighter in pieces, with the ignition end an the back parcel shelf.....they do explode in a hot car.
I had a lighter blow up in my car. It was a cheap one tho. One time I put a lighter on my coffee table I guess was still lit and I heard a bang and my cat was running for his life. I was in the other room and I had no idea what happened until I saw a burnt spot on my table, found parts of the lighter all over the room.
Jamie is always so composed and emotionless. But when he actually chuckles, you know he's thrilled!
I was about to type this while watching the video in 2022. Let's so what happens when this video is watched in the 2030's!
"No fire, but... that was a bang."
*toaster oven bursts into flames*
Dat timing. XD
"oh, nevermind"
When the lighter popped in the toaster oven but didn't burst into flames, I was thinking "I hope they don't go right over to check it out", and then Jaime went over to check it and then the flames suddenly started.
Only a Mythbuster would read a warning label and be like "Hmm, how can I blow this up?"
@TOP CAT U ARE WEIRD
@TOP CAT U ARE WEIRD
@TOP CAT I M A KID...
@TOP CAT ok boomer ( jk)
Watching them move those ballistic shields was so perfect
2:14 is the saddest shot I have ever seen.
@@SlippySnack lmao
Hello failure my old friend, you've come to ruin my day again.
adam: "see this is gonna take me 3 hours to do, but you guys at home will just cut to it in 5 minutes"
jamie: *blows it up in 5 minutes*
gotta love Jamie's laugh
As a kid who grew up in england, i can confirm this myth. you just remove the metal top and throw it at a wall or floor so that the gas output hits the surface.
Whenever Jamie laughs like that you know theres dangerous explosions involved
It has happened to me TWICE. Once in India and another time in Australia, both times when the car was left in the sun and the temp exceeded 44C. I did not see the lighters burn or explode but I left a lighter on the dash and came to lighter bits in the car so..... yeah. I guess now that I see the video I realise I was lucky there was no fire.
Haluk L. Aka lucky you didn’t crash! It was an explosion though. You would need some kind of vacuum for implosion :)
Same for me but in in Spain
Same happened to me. I had a lighter inside my car in the heat this past summer for only about an hour and it exploded lol
@rudiger891 I live in Australia and it happen to me last month
Texas and I've had a couple pop, looks like they used bic lighters, the ones I've had pop were cheapo lighters
iv had a plastic lighter explode in my pocket, when i was tig welding it hurt but only left little cuts. now i only use a zippo
1:00 "thats our car"
"Thats perfect!"
I wish these guys were friends, they're so funny
yeah it actually kinda surprised me when i learned that even though they work together very well and have respect for each other that they don't actually get along that well. They always meshed really well in the show and even the times they did get mad at each other just seemed like to buddies hazing one another
Them moving the protective glass in sync was hilarious
This is why you should always wear FRCs when welding even if it's just a home shop and you dont use your welding machine to much
I can honestly say I’ve had a gas station lighter explode in my car during the summer
I left one in my car in long term parking at the airport in the summer. Came back a week later and there were just pieces of the lighter all over the car.
It’s always a human analog, not a human digital 😂
Did anybody else fall asleep and wake up to this random video?
you're a hero for posting old mythbusters
I know that if you hit a lighter on the side with a golf club it will explode. Because I did it. Twice.
Yeah, i left a lighter on my dashboard one time.. it was one of those cheap crack lighters. But it blew up. Soooo definitely possible
I've had one blow up in my car in the center console..blew purple plastic every where. Lady parked next to me at the convenance store was all upset when I came back out saying my car just blew up..lol
"I know my toaster oven"
One blew up in my jeep in Missouri on a summer day. Off brand tho, not bic
Mine did too, really loud..
I went swimming once and left my light in my jeans and it exploded
That's the same car from the ejector seat myth
1:10 OMG THAT SYNC 😂!!!
I love these two!
It felt like losing an old friend when this show ended.
The light is the missing element
We used to do the golf club//valve one all the time with cheap 10 for a pound lighters. Worked every time and caused no harm whatsoever.
They used the strongest best lighters for the car test. I feel if they used the cheap see through lighters the results would be better
The Hyneman: *Chuckles*
Everybody: I’m in danger aren’t I?
I love Mythbusters but the whole farenheit to celsius conversion is doing my head in.
I once had a 12 oz. soda can explode inside my car, I had left it in my car's cup holder, completely and perfectly blew off one end of the can... It looked almost machined like...
I never get tired of seeing Jaimy freak the hell out haha
Tested to many bics... gotta use cheap crack lighters!
I think there is a lot of variance in quality between different brands and makes of cheap lighters, I almost never have any issues with one brand, while I started avoiding another because the top housing plastic parts tended to catch fire when lighting things that just take a second longer to light like a new candle. It actually can happen if the lighter is inside the car and the sun is through the window, like a magnifying glass sort of :p
I had a disposable lighter explode while the sun was on it while it was in the side of the door.
It happened to me in New Mexico. Not with a nice Bic...it was one of those cheapos next to the Bics, thinner and translucent.
I love this show, the mantra seems to be” we are going to experiment and test...........Fuck it, lets just blow it up” haha
I had few times gas lighter explodes in a car. But that is just plastic fracture, no flammable explosion. Simply, pressure of propane/butane mix is too high for the lighter casing to withstand. But, without source of ignition, nothing bad happened.
This has happened to me more than once. The one thing all the lighters had in common was they were all used not new lighters full of fuel.
well sure. the reason it has so many warning labels. stupid people doing stupid things. but perhaps at the same time there was a redesign. less pressure, thicker plastic... not just slapping a warning on it but also fixing it a little so to mitigate the risks of it happening again.
Is Jamie from Sweden? That sound he made when microwave exploded sounds so swedish.
He looks Swedish. Remind me about that Woody Woodpecker character
@@JonatasAdoM That's true lmao!
I'm sure by descent he's Swedish.
Ya I think so

happened to me though, in a renault 5, in Wales of all places, and it was on the passanger seat. blew out the side.
my friend once simply dropped one in a bar and it exploded as it hit the ground and flew cross the bar like 5-6 meters. was awesome haha
Haha
haha

LOL at the hole on jamies head !!
This has happened to me several times but it was always with the clear plastic lighters.
How does the UV output from the oven compare to the sun a lighter would absorb on a dashboard?
the dashboard scene hapened in my car! dont know how hot it was and if there was a fire, but i found the exploded parts of my lighter as i returned to my car!
if you throw it down on the ground hard enough, it'll pop
a toaster oven car? that sounds good but i still prefer riding to the mall in my flying donut lol
Same pased to me in Spain. The lighter hadn't strong plastic like those one in mythbusters

I can't believe he approached the toaster oven to raise the temp without safety gear.
I wonder if the sun directly on the lighter and any magnification effect, especially if the lighter was clear or opaque, would affect the possibility of it exploding.
I live in Florida. I have seen this happen more then once. Not with a Bic but with clear colored lighters
So the last part took place in san fran? Mot too sure how many people would have complained if they would have taken that particular city out but 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I've actually had 2 lighters explode on me on two different occasions after being left in the car so the Mythbusters got it wrong.
They were testing if the car can reach enough temperature to make it explode INSIDE the car, and that didn't happen. What you do after you take it out, is not really the point...

The music playing at 4:21- 4:48 is memorial.
I have physically seen a lighter go off on a dash before it can happen
I love how they blocked out the barcode on the lighter
Jaime smiles more when something blows up.
I do, too. :D
Pretty sure the warnings are also a failsafe for if there may be a defect in the lighter that may cause a very small leak
I don’t know how many lighters I lost in my car to the heat while at work in Arizona. Came back to my car with shards of plastic everywhere
Did anyone else recognize the car here? It's the one from the ejector seat episode!
did they look up the flash point of lighter fluid?
I remember that accident in Brussels in the 80s or Urly 90s
I've left a lighter on my dash and came back to the car on a hot sunny day in South Carolina and there was a massive burnt hole in my dash lol. They definitely can explode in those circumstances. It was a cheap, clear lighter not a bic.

2:49 well jamie there's you fire!!
Can confirm this has happened to me. In Texas, came back to my truck to a lighter in pieces.
8:03 - 1000 cubic centimeters sounds like a lot - until you realize that that's just 1 cubic decimeter, aka 1 liter.

speaking as someone who both wears a lot of denim and has been showered by countless welding sparks, I call bullshit! denim does not catch fire like that

on the first test sure, but the second test faked, it caught fire far too fast and the flames looked too big to be just denim
