Armaldo VS Cradily - Solo Challenge - Pokémon FireRed

  • Challenge Rules:
    - I can only use my starter in battle.
    - No items in trainer battles except held items.
    - No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
    - Accuracy moves aren’t explicitly banned but will be avoided.
    - I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
    My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
    I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
    PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

      It's bulk is so useful but in a solo challenge it definitely holds it back. Once I figured out my Egg move the early game did become way more palatable but lacking a bit of extra oomph really slowed it down. Keep the Dome love coming :)

    eggcellent sir, truly eggcellent, I see why you rage quit with Cradilly, that was rough, but clearly could of been rougher, you ran it well and I think you ran it better than most would of and certainly better than I thought it would do, interesting choice of mirror coat for the egg move, took you a while but you got to make use of it. Armaldo was superb, but sweet Jesus the bad luck with poison, so many resets because of poison, especially poison point and that mankey again, why do I get the feeling that mankey is going to do that to all the fossils, maybe not Aerodactyl as much.
    I like the movesets you went with for both of them, I'm not surprised with what you did with Armaldo, but I like that you kept water gun and then water pulse for longer, its not a special attacker, but having it just in case was such a wise move, same with Cradilly, going mostly physical, but keeping the grass STAB for special was very effective and great choice of HP psychic for it, it just plowed through the league with it and the champion was such a joke, I love that it found a spot where it had an easy time instead of a painful one
    and you be nice to the bugs, Armaldo did good and so did Pinsir and Scyther, the bugs will come back and bite you if you're not careful. Parasect and Shedinja will see to that. I had a thought with those 2 for the VS. how about adding in Shuckle for a 3 way VS and see which Gen had the worst bug type, my bet would be Shuckle, you will genuinely hate it with blind passion and rage. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the fossils, have you been dropping hints about how well they're going to do, Kabutops could win it yes, but do not underestimate the Lord Helix

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  11 месяцев назад +2

      I really wish that I hadn't deleted the footage to at least have added a little excerpt about my pain. A different kind of lesson learned. Even failed runs are good footage :) I'm willing to give a small spoiler for Aerodactyl. When I was on Nugget bridge, cruising through the trainers, outspeeding and one shotting that little !@#$ Mankey put the biggest smile on my face.
      Dialing in the Cradily run was so satisfying. Going from so so so much pain to a completion where I saved THAT amount of time was the best feeling. I'm still so curious if going with HP Flying and staying with a physical focus would have performed better. Lance would have been way easier with the physical focus that's for sure.
      It's true!! Scyther and Pinsir outplayed my eggspectations and Armaldo blew them out of the water. Like I said! They're winning me over. Slowly :) I think Helix is going to be the most fun to play honestly because of its synergy with the moveset that I'm thinking of. As we saw though.. having Swords Dance is literally a game changer. I actually bet Shuckle would do better than both. Defense Curl/Rollout strats are not to be taken lightly!

    • @jptheflipper3825
      @jptheflipper3825 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Eggsceptional you saying that about Mankey just put a big smile on my face. it would of been interesting to see the deleted footage, but I have an idea as to how it would look, your Brock fights I think are a good indicator of the pain you faced, many a time I have thrown my GB across the room in frustration because of runs like that (20 years ago and now)
      Cradilly did a lot better than I thought it would do, I think you're deleted run gave you a good idea of what not to do with it and I think we all can forgive you for doing a run 1.5 because of it, Armaldo is a big bug beast and didn't need as much work to make work, but you did great with Cradilly and HP flying would be interesting to see on it, psychic worked nice as it gave you better damage for bruno and agatha, psychic before Gen 4 is now and always a little broken.
      people always talk badly of bugs and yet you have so far made them in the beasts of Gen 3 and you'll see that with others like Scizor and Heracross (next VS maybe) and my 2 fave of Venomoth and Masquerain will definitely show you that too. Helix does have the better moveset considering it is a special attacker opposed to physical, although I wish it had access to giga drain like Kabutops does, it would suit it so much better. and yeah you're right Swords dance is the game changer, but we'll wait and see on that one, BTW did you try any rain dance strats on either of them to take advantage of swift swim?
      I hate to tell you this, but Shuckle doesn't get rollout in Fire Red and Leaf Green, it only gets that via move tutor in emerald, you are right it would be good with it and defense curl, but in Fire Red it will only suffer and its only egg move is sweet scent. it will be a painful, painful run

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  11 месяцев назад +2

      @@jptheflipper3825 It's a shame they don't make 'em like they used to. My GameBoy took a smack or two over the years, though never intentional.
      HP Psychic was my snap decision when I was planning the second run and I for some reason got stuck in the mentality of SpA not fully considering my initial argument of "I'm going physical because Rock Slide owns" and using a physical HP.
      I wanted to use Rain Dance with both of them but neither can learn it via TM. If they can and the internet was wrong I'll be heartbroken. The Bugs have been winning me over. So far. They're way stronger than I gave them credit for every single time.
      You are correct. Shuckle is going to be more difficult that I thought with that learnset. Egg moves: Sweet Scent. Booyeah I can find a way to use that once then never again.

      @@Eggsceptional I hate to tell you this, but they both get rain dance via TM18, I am very sorry. I think you need to change where you look up your info for your runs. I use Bulbapedia and Pokemon Database, they might be helpful for the future. do you have time to do 3rd runs with rain dance for Omastar and Kabutops? might be worth trying
      yes use sweet scent to attract something better and use that lol. I love my bugs and will be doing a set of fire red and leaf green runs with them again soon, I'll race ya

    • @Eggsceptional

      @@jptheflipper3825 Combining posts against because it's easier for me to keep track of :p
      It was actually on the Cradily run that I got TM10 off of a single Meowth before I was out of Rock Tunnel I think , where in the second playthrough I was actually aiming to use TM10 and 4-5 Meowths didn't find it until right before the league. Darn RNG. And who needs Body Slam when you can have Return right?
      Electric types in general terrify me as runs in FR/LG just because of how many random obstacles they face. Raichu VS LB Pikachu will be fun to explore though. Clever clever!
      It'll definitely take some deciding to figure out the proper format for set up move comparisons. I was also thinking about a mini demonstration of optimized EVs vs not. Eh. Ideas! Time! Ah!
      I grab my learnsets for the overlay from Bulbapedia but prefer referencing PokémonDB when fact checking and both say that neither Armaldo nor Cradily get Rain Dance. They get Sunny Day but no Rain Dance. Omastar and Kabutops get them so yes they will be using that.
      Oh man the idea of races and adding larger scale projects like that feels like a distant dream right now. I have way too much to work on right now! Which isn't a bad thing.. just requires time. Always time.

    SPOILERS
    So going into this I wanted cradily to win it’s my second favorite fossil behind archeops (i’d worship the plume fossil if I could) however i knew that armaldo was more built for attacking so was better suited for a solo run… and then I realized it got swords dance yeah cradily wasn’t beating that however it did get a very good time and armaldo is hanging out with a bunch of legendaries witch is a funny image this were very fun runs to watch and while seeing mirror coat was fun I wonder how using recover or hp flying might’ve gone oh well you did cradily a time to be proud of also cradily doesn’t get storm drain until gen 5 since it’s there hidden ability

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  11 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you! I'd considered Recovery quite heavily after giving up on Mirror Coat but Rock Slide accelerated the early game SO much. The HP Flying question will remain lingering for now I'm afraid. You're correct about the Hidden Ability! I did do a poll before asking my viewers of they were fine with me using Hidden Abilities as long as they existed in that Gen. The majority said yes, so Swinub for example could use Thick Fat

    Also in terms of Bug Types a Heracross Vs Scizor vid would be kool to see, not only are they both gen 2 bugs but their 2nd type and great movepool could make things interesting also you could compare Scizor's time to Scyther's time since they have the same BST only with different distributions and Heracross to Pinsir since they're sorta similar with the same BST with both having the same attack and speed (not sure if you would have to redo Scyther and Pinsir since you've changed your routing with doing the first three Sevii Islands before the Round 2 league)

    • @lumineinfinitussilverkagat8094
      @lumineinfinitussilverkagat8094 11 месяцев назад +1

      my guess for a winner with that run would be Scizor even though it's 4x weak to Blaine the steel typing is so good, though Heracross has 95 base Sp.def so maybe it won't struggle with Blaine as much (plus it has Guts so a burn wouldn't be so bad since it won't cause the attack drop but the damage over time is still bad)

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  11 месяцев назад +2

      I feel like the Blaine fight might not be too bad with either as I have so much of the run to prepare for it. Plus, they're both strong and fast enough to deal with him without taking too many extra attacks. Hopefully :) I've had a lot of Heracross requests and when somebody mentioned making it a VS against Scizor I was sold. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes with the routing on overall time. It exists but I feel it would impact the Round 1 times way more than the Round 2, which is the one I'm most interested in

    Hey, Super Repels are more cost efficient than Max Repels. The Pokedollar cost by step is 2.5 for Super repels and 2.8 for max repels. I don't know if money is an issue in these runs, but if it is, going for super Repels would be better than max repels. If not, stick to max since it takes less menu time.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  11 месяцев назад +2

      Correct! Typically in these runs I'm not super strapped for cash and I try to avoid the menuing as much as I can. Playing on 4x gamespeed my ability to do fine control isn't always reliable.

    Utterly shocked and amazed by Armaldo. I always saw them as a bad pokemon. but to get the placement of S tier. is it armaldo, or is it just the might of SD for the whole game I wonder?

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  11 месяцев назад +2

      I feel like a big part of it was the might of SD off the hop. Having Water Gun for Brock too was critical. That Erratic growth rate was something else too I gained levels so fast in the late game so I could blow all my candies earlier. Such a fun route to make

      Um actually, Venomoth is the uber rare Hybrid type, taking on whatever typing they choose :P
      I've been learning towards doing that naturally, however, there are runs like Magnemite where Hidden Power is darn near necessary without leveling into the 90s. I almost had to anyway even with HP! I've been trying to not use HP unless I feel it's absolutely necessary in the first playthroughs - same as Substitute.

    • @briancaster2876

      @@Eggsceptional I imagine doing solo run content you have to balance these things. You don't want to use them every run to keep things from feeling to samey but you also don't want to rip your hair out dealing with pokemon that would be too hard/take too long without them. Well I've only recently subbed and it seems to me that you're doing a pretty good job of that.
