Martin was spot on! (When he said Pete’s was the “right answer.” Not with his own list, lord no, I mean come on.) Still, these videos are so much fun BECAUSE Martin’s rankings seem to be based on a random number generator.

Funky Junction with the first incarnation of Lizzy in tribute-for-money mode doing Purple covers was certainly interesting. Our 3 friends playing Speed King, Fireball and Strange Kind of Woman is a fun listen, quite a good job.

Pete I'm glad you had Phenomenon high on your list. I bought that album long ago when it first came out at a locally famous record store in Calumet City Il. I always considered it a hundred percent album. All time favorite. Great show.
@@robertklimczak2207 I’ve lived in the Chicago area all of my life. I loved going to Hegewisch Records on Torrence Ave and also the one in Merrillville, Indiana. That Waysted album is one of those albums I never would have thought to check out without streaming. I listened to it one day, not expecting much and was totally blown away. A real hidden gem. Force It I consider like the first KISS album. Good on its own but a good portion of it appears in superior versions on a mandatory live album. Awesome discussion, I really love both bands.
I personally didn't include any "family"/related albums but for the Lizzy family I have: Black Star Riders (Gorham) - 4 really solid albums, I didn't like last year's Wrong Side Of Paradise that much Brian Robertson solo Phil Lynott solo/Document/Grand Slam (excellent) Märvel/Guilty Pleasures (TL covers) Pride Tiger/The Lucky Ones (Lizzy-like) Wild Horses/The First Album & Stand Your Ground - really good

Just realized that Queen of the Deep and Boogie Woogie Dance have a lot in common - deceptively heavy closers. Martin Popoff's #2 choice, Black Rose, is surprising. I took up his challenge of naming 10 Gary Moore solos of note, when all I had to do was name Black Rose!
Great episode guys - both bands that i got into around the same time('78), it is funny how the timelines are so similar here...my tastes usually mirror Martin more so than Pete, but agree with Obsession as my fav of the bunch...and i guess i'm the outlier on liking S&M(the song, of course...) since I got into it back when it came out, great drumming and guitar solo!
We had a full solar eclipse in the UK in 1999. I remember it mostly because it was weird. It didn't go that dark, but the atmosphere became really odd. All the build up was about how dark it would get, but it became murky, and the atmosphere became kind of humid. It lasted about 10 minutes but it was gradual. Apparently it got quite dark in the South, in Cornwall and Devon.
That means you weren't under totality. The 1991 solar eclipse here in Hawai'i was only a total eclipse over Hawai'i Island. I was living on Oahu at the time and we had the same as you described. I think we had 95% of the moon covering the sun. It happened right after sunrise so it became light with birds chirping, started to get really dark again and all the birds went quiet with the brightest stars being seen. It was wonderfully weird.
Well I'll do my Top 10 1) Obsession 2) Jailbreak 3) Lights Out 4) Johnny The Fox 5) Bad Reputation 6) Black Rose 7) Force It 8) Phenomenon 9) Thunder & Lightning 10) Fighting
I would totally include Scorpions on that ranking. Schenker conection aside, those 3 bands started sounding one way in 1970/1971 and by 1974 they became their real selves.
I kept it to Thin Lizzy and UFO only, didn’t know about the family albums. Anyway, Thin Lizzy was the clear winner for me. Popoff and Pardo are at it again with what are becoming the 'grouping" shows for personal reference with UFO and Thin Lizzy are the ingredients for this episode. These episodes are proving to be a fascinating watch, particularly and Martin and Pete analyze their overall preferences amid the ranking of a number of albums. Don't have the depth of knowledge to provide any personal ranking of these 30 albums but the commentary and discussion is always interesting. Thanks once again, gents, for taking on what seems to be a herculean task. Another great episode. There ya go!
Lizzy is my favorite band of all time, and tbh I have not heard one ufo song! I’ll have to look into their stuff. Phil’s solo albums are wonderful if you haven’t heard them. Full of interesting, sometimes all time songs (Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, Girls, Kings Call, with Old Town being my fave song ever) I’m surprised Pete ranked them as he did, but to each his own!
Agreed on TL's all time great status as well as the high quality of the solo Lynott albums. The Philip Lynott Album in particular. I've got some other Lynott releases: Live In Sweden 1983 (really good), Live Document, Slam Anthems, The Man And His Music Vol II, The Collection, Yellow Pearl. Great musician!
Make sure you pick up Grand Slam live in Ireland. I was surprised how good it is! Nineteen, Night in the life of a blues singer, and many others. Also, the studio sessions has his last great song, “Gay Boys” an absolute masterpiece.
@@jcollins1305 Thx...I recently also got The Man And His Music Vol V & VI - still need Vols 1, 3, 4 & 8. I have the 6 minute version of " Night In The Life Of A Blues Singer" on the expanded Black Rose set, and "Nineteen" (studio) is on Collection while the live version is on Slam Anthems. "Gay Boys" is on Slam Anthems too
that has got to be the craziest musical statement of all-time. Thin Lizzy is your favorite band and you've never heard UFO? Ever. My god man, they go hand-in-glove. I mean, of course, Thin Lizzy is better, but UFO from '74 -'79 was cookin' with gas.
Great ranking. Hey Pete, Idea for the show. I think it would be awesome to rank the bands Mike Portnoy has played in. Transatlantic, Winery Dogs, Flying colors etc... Anyway, you could either just pick an album from each band or maybe the debut album. Whatever you could come up with would be very interesting. I immediately thought of Rick LaBonte, George Lamie and Steve from the Prog Corner. Would love to see it.
44:52 Interesting you say that, Martin - “Sarah” was recorded for Phil’s solo album (the only Lizzy’s on it are Phil and Gary, who said it ended up on Black Rose because they were short of material). Imho, “S&M”also sounds like a Phil solo song, although they had played it live with Robbo. I don’t like it either and wonder why they didn’t record “Are You Ready” instead. Maybe they just forgot they hadn’t or it felt like an old song, as it featured on Live And Dangerous 🤔
I have a version of "Sarah" from '84 that shows up on the collection Slam Anthems. Wiki says that Lynott's project Grand Slam later "adopted" the song, especially live - it's also on Live In Sweden 1983. They quote Moore as speculating that it might have originally been intended for a Lynott solo album because no other TL members played on it... Not related to another TL song by the same name from Shades/1972

Love Pete's face when Martin ranked Jailbreak pretty low and the Lynott solo records among his top 10 😆 As a Lizzy fan my top five would be my top Lizzy albums followed by Lights Out and Obsession.
I loved the UFO album covers, which make them out from the typical heavy rock/metal cliches. What about Lonestar's Firing on all Six? Great programme on two wonderful bands.
For solar viewing basically make sure the item you're using is made from mylar or conforms to the ISO 12312-2:2015(E) international safety standard. Great show. My favorite would be Thin Lizzy's Bad Reputation, then UFO's Phenomenon, Lights Out, Lizzy's Johnny the Fox and finally Jailbreak. Later edit: I thought I was the only one who''s favorite UFO song of the Schenker era was Can You Roll Her. Glad to see I'm not alone.
I'd go as far as to say that 'The Sun Goes Down' is possibly the finest song on a final album by a major rock band. That 'The Wild...' cover for UFO is a shocker, and it was by Hipgnosis apparently. They could come up with such brilliant, enduring images but they were responsible for some real turds as well.
Keeping it to a top 5 - pretty much mirrors how much my bands at the time covered the songs! Force It Jailbreak Lights Out No Heavy Petting Johnny the Fox
Man I’m old. I remember seeing UFO opening for Rush at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium the year they recorded ‘Strangers In The Night’. Rush had released All The World’s A Stage’ & I thought UFO blew them off the stage that night. Also the same year I saw Thin Lizzy promoting’Bad Reputation album opening for Queen at the LA Forum. That was just before ‘Live Killers’ came out. Both bands kicked ass that night as I remember.
I think that my #1 would be Assault Attack followed by a bunch of Thin Lizzy records (Thunder and Lightning, Jailbreak, Bad Reputation, Black Rose). Cheers.
I fall more in line with Pete's rankings with a few differences. I am almost 180 degrees from Martin on these rankings. As usual, Martin puts a heavy emphasis on production when he judges an album. I firmly believe this is the main reason he gravitates towards the late 70's - 80's albums in most of these ranking shows. On another note, he is Quick to dismiss the mellow material on the Schenker era UFO albums but embraces the mellow material on the Chapman era albums. Not to mention, the mellow songs off Phil's debut albums that he finds appealing are just not very good, IMO. Oh well, I still have tons of respect for you, Martin!
Speaking of S&M, just heard the demo. It's off the hook. It's like twice as fast. It also has 2 guitar solos, Scott Gorham first then Gary Moore. "Thin Lizzy - S & M (Fast Version Demo)" I always liked the song. It has Scott Gorham's best guitar solo. First time I heard it on the Black Rose album, I thought it was Gary Moore.
Why not the 2 Mogg/Way, Sign of 4 disk or the rest of the Waysted catalog? These would have eclipsed a few off these lists. I get the time limit, but would have made the discussion better imho.
The best UFO offshoot that never was is actually Fastway - the combination of Pete Way and Fast Eddie Clarke from Motorhead. Unfortunately Pete Way had to leave because of record company contracts, but the album is excellent. What could have been eh?
I love Hero and the Madman on Vagabonds. I gotta disagree with the guys though I love UFO Flying. Im not one of those that thinks Mick Bolton is their best guitarist ever, but I dig it.

I'm with Team Martin. I much prefer the Chapman-era of UFO to the Shenker-era. No Place To Run, The W, The W and the I and Mechanix would be my favorite UFO-albums.
Nice job guys! That is the beauty of music...everyone has their own opinion and there is no right or wrong answer...BUT...have to say if I got a nickel for every time I disagreed with Martin's takes I could purchase some small land off the coast of Spain! My biggest gripe is his constant talk of production....I always say it is about the songs! I get that production is an ingredient but I think he goes into way too much detail on every video he does....personally think the mix is more important but that is just my take. His UFO picks are a whole other topic that I do not have time to go into...yikes 🤷🤮🤬 Keep up the great work on Friday's Boys 👍
"...constant talk of production" - that's what music critics do. I think you'll find that MANY rock reviews at least mention the production, some downright harp on it. I agree it's much more about the songs & the playing but the way the record's produced is also important (just not equally so unless it's so bad that it's literally unlistenable)
I am sort of with Pete on Alone Again Or. I even went and listened to the Love - Forever Changes album which has the original, and the album is always in the top ten albums of all time lists, but I don't get it myself

Agree, it would be great to include 74-82 Scorpions album as well....
My top 10 are:

2. Lights Out
3. No Heavy Petting
4. Fighting
5. Jailbreak
6. Phenomenon
7. Bad Reputation
8. Obsession
9. Force It
10. Renegade
Competition between 80-90 Iron Maiden and Judas Priest would be funny too)).
Great show - got me to listen to a few tracks I hadn't taken much notice of before. Good stuff.
Brian Robertson and Jimmy Bain's Wild Horses second album has some great songs. Robertson's Diamonds and Dust is worth a listen to as well.
I personally didn't include any "family"/related albums but for the Lizzy family I have:
Black Star Riders (Gorham) - 4 really solid albums, I didn't like last year's Wrong Side Of Paradise that much
Brian Robertson solo
Phil Lynott solo/Document/Grand Slam (excellent)
Märvel/Guilty Pleasures (TL covers)
Pride Tiger/The Lucky Ones (Lizzy-like)
Wild Horses/The First Album & Stand Your Ground - really good
@@wolf1977 Yeah, there's a lot of great stuff by the spin off bands out there.
Rest In Peace Gary Moore Legendary
I really like these shows, very interesting. I've tried to do what Martin & Pete are doing. But it's to hard to rank all those great albums by great bands. And I realize everybody has their own taste & I know Martin's taste is a little different. But his ranking of the classic UFO With Schenker is , well crazy.
Looking forward to the next show guys.
Yeah. It's hard to believe Martin has 7 books on UFO too. I won't be reading any of them, that's for sure.

At this point he's just slagging off Moore to be a jerk, eh?
@@jimmypage2843: He'll deny it.😀
Great episode guys - both bands that i got into around the same time('78), it is funny how the timelines are so similar here...my tastes usually mirror Martin more so than Pete, but agree with Obsession as my fav of the bunch...and i guess i'm the outlier on liking S&M(the song, of course...) since I got into it back when it came out, great drumming and guitar solo!
@@aldebaran4154 yes, the birds going quiet was spooky.
Incredible how underrated Renegade is.... One of greatest albuns from a band with long period in the road
Well I'll do my Top 10
1) Obsession
2) Jailbreak
3) Lights Out
4) Johnny The Fox
5) Bad Reputation
6) Black Rose
7) Force It
8) Phenomenon
9) Thunder & Lightning
10) Fighting
Sensible. Whereas Martin’s choices 🙄
Yeah, Pete loooves the 70s.
I don't blame him, amazing decade for music.
They were always more than just a hard rock band, unlike UFO (ok, with the exception of Thunder and Lightning or UFO 1 and 2, respectively). Anyway, it was a fun week, in particular because of the cool Lizzy catalogue to dive into.

I got into Lizzy in my 30’s so I just never really took the time. I’ll give them a shot though.
Great episode it shows what great bands both were when ye see the difference in the 2 lists

Wow, thanks for that, Drew - also close to the right answer.
Love Pete's face when Martin ranked Jailbreak pretty low and the Lynott solo records among his top 10 😆
As a Lizzy fan my top five would be my top Lizzy albums followed by Lights Out and Obsession.
I loved the UFO album covers, which make them out from the typical heavy rock/metal cliches. What about Lonestar's Firing on all Six? Great programme on two wonderful bands.
Who did the best 1970 rendition of Come Away Melinda, UFO or Uriah Heep?
For solar viewing basically make sure the item you're using is made from mylar or conforms to the ISO 12312-2:2015(E) international safety standard. Great show. My favorite would be Thin Lizzy's Bad Reputation, then UFO's Phenomenon, Lights Out, Lizzy's Johnny the Fox and finally Jailbreak. Later edit: I thought I was the only one who''s favorite UFO song of the Schenker era was Can You Roll Her. Glad to see I'm not alone.
Angel -all 6 original albums-even Martin would agree-he wrote the book!
Force It
Jailbreak
Lights Out
No Heavy Petting
Johnny the Fox
Thin Lizzy all the way baby best band in the world!
That's high praise.
I love the Mogg/way and sign of 4 albums. they were excellent!
On that back cover shot on Phil's solo album he kinda looked like Gene Shalit. Something tells me that wasn't the look he was shooting for.
Good show dudes 👍👍
Love the show🥃
My first gig was UFO, Mechanix tour. My second gig was Thin Lizzy, Renegade tour. Martin would approve but my listings are more like Pete's!
I think that my #1 would be Assault Attack followed by a bunch of Thin Lizzy records (Thunder and Lightning, Jailbreak, Bad Reputation, Black Rose).
Cheers.
Absolutely agree with you Pete regarding No place to Run . Some really good songs with completely unsuited production. A real shame.
I thought "Assault Attack" would be Pete's top pick but then again "Obsession " has always been noted as a top UFO favorite.
Martin Birch ranking would be interesting
Assault Attack is one of my favorite all time albums
Speaking of S&M, just heard the demo. It's off the hook. It's like twice as fast. It also has 2 guitar solos, Scott Gorham first then Gary Moore. "Thin Lizzy - S & M (Fast Version Demo)"
I always liked the song.
Great show

Nice job guys! That is the beauty of music...everyone has their own opinion and there is no right or wrong answer...BUT...have to say if I got a nickel for every time I disagreed with Martin's takes I could purchase some small land off the coast of Spain! My biggest gripe is his constant talk of production....I always say it is about the songs! I get that production is an ingredient but I think he goes into way too much detail on every video he does....personally think the mix is more important but that is just my take.
His UFO picks are a whole other topic that I do not have time to go into...yikes 🤷🤮🤬
Keep up the great work on Friday's Boys 👍
"...constant talk of production" - that's what music critics do. I think you'll find that MANY rock reviews at least mention the production, some downright harp on it. I agree it's much more about the songs & the playing but the way the record's produced is also important (just not equally so unless it's so bad that it's literally unlistenable)
I agree. He thinks he's Martin Birch instead of Martin Popoff.
