@Christian Marin I feel dirty and cheap, now. Well, actually, I already felt that way but now I can blame it on @Rick Beato for snookering me into listening to and nearly appeciating the production of the music I hate.
For songs that are undoubtedly NOT great, he's going to trick us into watching a song analysis by noting how the artist copied someone else. That Beato is a shrewd one. ;-)
Loved "Never Really Over" when it came out, so much so I looked to see who wrote it, that's when I discovered Dagny, who is now probably one of my all-time favourites, she deserves greater fame than she has. Tracks like "Backbeat", "Used to You", "Wearing Nothing" I love.
Hold my tritone. Haha I'm kidding. But I do make videos like this and a follower recommended I check out Rick. Now I know why! I love watching his breakdowns - he can find something cool about literally anything.
You talk about the Katy Perry song being well-produced, as if it's a saving grace. It isn't. These ubiquitous, second-rate songs are ALWAYS well-produced, but that fact does NOT make them great songs...
If Katy loved Dagny's song so much, she should just do a cover and pay Dagny more proper royalties. With 9 songwriters, Dagny would probably be getting peanuts for this ripoff.
Exactly. I would at least hope that at least the royalties are split up in percentages so that Dagny is getting like 90% of the sales from that song. If she isn’t, then she signed a bad deal!
Reminds me of the recent story of that one producer who added his wife - pseudonymously - to a bunch of songs as a co-writer, in order to give his company a bigger share of the royalty pie in a co-production with another company, where the royalty was split evenly per each credited contributor. It turned out she didn't even write anything. So makes you wonder if the large number of coauthors is... deliberate in this way, even if they did all drop a line or something. Mhm whether she signed a bad deal? I think KP's song just about passes as a "legally distinct", or could have been modified further to be such, the "sound-alikes" are an engine that major-publisher pop music basically runs on. I think the only options for Dagny would be that either she gets written in and gets a small piece of a bigger pie, or tries to fight them and has like a 50-50 probability of getting bankrupted instead. When you deal with sharks, the only "good" deal is that they leave you alive after they gnaw on you a little bit.
It’s zedd who produced it. Katy doesn’t have to do with production and probably not even the chords. She does lyrics writing/topline when she works with max martin
LOL, Rick goes from “Katy Perry ripped off this song” to “What makes this Katy Perry song great?” Rick, I hope you never lose your enthusiasm for music of all styles!
Totally agree. Also, it probably helps that Dagny's song really feels like someone trying to find the right words to express her intense love for someone, while Katy's, for lack of a better description, sounds like 5 different writers trying to make a single idea of not getting over someone.
You have to understand they're not songwriters, they're producers that sit down to discuss what has already worked and how they can re-make it. But at least this time the lawyers called the original writer and have her have her deserved credits.
That's the very first thing I thought. Please tell me when, in the history of all music, did it take 9 people to write one measly song ? It actually takes a musical think-tank to come up with this ? You almost get the impression that this generation is running out of ideas.
Dagny will probably make more money from the copy than her own song, even though she's not getting much from each sale (maybe a penny?), Katy will (likely) sell a lot more of them. If it was my song that was copied, I'd accept that deal, I think. I'd have to look at the numbers, though.
I do agree...except that i always considered it a total rip that in the past, the song engineers/musicians/producers didn't get writing credit when it was often their hook/instrumentation/baseline that made the song so popular. and yet...what does that mean for royalties now? are there more royalties taken out of the profits, or do more people have to split the same amount of royalties??
I like how he is completely open to pop music while you would think an older guy like him who grew up playing jazz and lived through the golden age of rock would scorn pop music but instead he embraces it an uses it as an opportunity to teach us

Maybe your problem is that you are trying to like pop the same way you like other genres of music, idk. But, of course, honesty comes first. And there is nothing wrong in not liking it.
Awesome video, Rick! Not a musician and no musical talent, but former radio jock and work in production with orchestra's now, and your explanation is very cool and understandable. I've often heard "borrowed pieces", but your "inspired" description is truly accurate as "ripped off". Really liked how you compared them on ProTools! And you're right.. easily overlapped to the point where it truly sounded like one well mixed song.
I totally agree with you. It's what makes the Dagny song listenable, even if it's not really my cup of tea, whether the Katy version is just another unbearable pop soup that everyone serves, and Beato says it about the ''weird snare'': well of course it's weird, because it's fake. And if it's not, it's so distorted on the computer you don't recognize it... Just like Katy voice 🙄, totally fake (in the result product, I'm not judging her talent as a singer).
Agree when I first herd the Katy Perry song I hated it but when I was listening to this and people in the comments were talking about this video I went to watch it and I was shocked how similar they were and how my reactions were so different. I think it’s because we see Katy as someone so corporate while dagney is a small artist
Never heard of Dagny but I've heard of Katie Perry. Both are ear poison to me but ole Dagny would be smart to take the checks from Katie JUGSernaut Perry.
I looked this up when the song came out, Perry got permission beforehand and I'm pretty sure Dagny even posted something about it on her social at the time. This video is kind of clickbait

4 года назад+1
Same rule applies to "Even" in pop songs... I can't even... I even... why even? lol
I find the moment with the 9 writers absolutely hilarious! In my native language (Bulgarian) we have a saying that goes along the lines of “9 grannies - a puny child” meaning “too many cooks spoil the broth”
My world of music made a huge change when I started playing guitar. Before that music was like eating a casserole. You could pick out a few flavors but in general it was just the overall package. Afterwords much like a chef being able to taste all the different ingredients in every bite, my ear could now hear the individual notes, chords, bass, drums and keyboards of every instrument to some level. You sir would be in my view one of the great master chefs of the world. You hear things I can barely hear even when you point them out. Thank You.
I think in most cases, the vast majority of these “writers” are really producers, that’s why almost any current pop song features high quality values in that regard, but are seriously lacking in the songwriting department because many of them are basically sound designers not composers. Of those 9, maybe only 3 actually wrote this song, the rest added 300+ layers of fx, overdubs, samples, etc over it.
In current pop music, having anything interesting in the words, melody, or chords would just get in the way of the important things, the production and the heavy breathing. Mostly the production.
That's even more troubling... "The rest" couldn't come up with something original and had to include the actual original creators in order to release this one. Mind-blowing...
Diecast Newb And I guess that’s the case here, back in the day there were credits for writers, producers, session musicians etc. Nowadays everyone are quoted as a “writer”, that doesn’t make much sense to me.
I finally listened to her, and hate her entire style. Insincere commercial garbage, as far as I'm concerned. There are a lot of them around, and they are all interchangeable.
Did she credit Sara Bareilles in the same way she has credited Dagny for this song? If you're sharing credit and revenue there's no real issue. KP and her team get to be a bit creative themselves, imagining a new lyric for a vibe that has really spoken to them. The original artists get recognition, revenue and another route into the playlists of people who might not otherwise have encountered them yet. If the 'inspired' artist is completely upfront about the origin of the inspiration with a clear credit and redirection to the original artist, it can only be good for everyone.
It's not Plagiarism, if she hadn't given credit it would be. It's just really interesting, which is what Rick is pointing out, not that Katy Perry did anything wrong.
Your version of playing both tracks at the same time is probably the best version. It’s time for you to start a career in DJaying. You can say you were inspired by both and pay a sampling tribute to both, lol
Facts! Look at Chris Brown's "Don't Wake Me Up",...11 writers and none of them realized maybe he shouldn't be drinking coffee if he's trying to sleep? I guess it's just me...
I randomly heard this one when my brother was showing me some of the music he was listening to back in 2013, and I recognized the plagiarism right away... The intro of a song called “The Ghost of You and I” that was released by a band called “Story of the Year” is totally ripped of from the intro of a song called “New Noise,” by a kickass band named “Refused.” Story of the Year’s album was called “The Constant,” on Epitaph Records. Wikipedia states that “All lyrics written by Dan Marsala and Adam Russell, all music composed by Story of the Year” on this album. 🙄 *Released* February 16, 2010 *Recorded* Mid 2009 _CLEARLY NO CREDIT WAS GIVEN TO THE BAND REFUSED!_ Refused’s album that had the “New Noise” song on it was called “The Shape of Punk to Come.” Wikipedia states that the album was: *Released* October 27, 1998 *Recorded* Late 1997 Album credits: Music By, Words By - Refused The band (Refused) was broken up/taking a long hiatus during the period of time that Story of the Year’s “The Constant” was written/released. Wikipedia says that for Refused: *Years active* 1991-1998, 2012; 2014-present “The Shape of Punk to Come” was originally released on the “Burning Heart” record label. However, Burning Heart has a close affiliation with Californian label Epitaph Records, who own the rights to distribute Burning Heart's output in North America. _THEREFORE, BOTH ALBUMS WERE DISTRIBUTED ON THE “EPITAPH RECORDS” RECORD LABEL._ They knew exactly what they were doing. I imagine it would make Refused pretty pissed off if they ever come across that theft and butchering of their amazing, ORIGINAL music, wherein they didn’t even get writing credit.
And for a lot longer than most people realize. The bass intro for You Can't Hurry Love has been copied verbatim for tons of songs. The Doors admitted to ripping off the Kinks song "All Day and All of the Night" for their own song "Hello, I Love You". I would even hazard to guess it happened MORE in the 50s-70s- it just wasn't as big a deal to rip a song wholesale from another artist, and record it as your own.
Through this song I got interested in Dagny's music. I can't explain what it is about her music but it is catchy as hell. Add her fantastic voice and looks and she's just a winner
Watching you Rick is way more entertaining than watching those win fails movies in youtube... I had so much fun watching that story about Sergio Mende's song! You are great!
That’s most pop music you hear. All these pop singers are just faces, their singing is overpoduced by nerds and their writing is done by old white guys. Then people think the singers actually wrote the song 🥴
There's an old meme that shows a Beyonce song, and then lists off the 15 writers on one side, and then Bohemian Rhapsody, written by Freddie Mercury on the other side.
When you get a copyright strike... who is going to get the advertising money? I'm editing this comment to add the requisite LOLz and Laughing face emoji's that I originally forgot to add to my tongue in cheek smart ass rhetorical question... 😆😜🤣
Is it unkind to suggest that the Dagny track is itself a clichéd mashup of stale dance-pop tropes with nary an original moment to be found? What does it even mean to copy a piece of music that is itself just a collage of other collages? Methinks we've lost the thread!

But once I started making my own music, I started really appreciating pop music for its feel more than anything. Also I find that even the worst hit songs at least have something worth hearing and learning from in them.
This is not the first time Katy Perry has done this, or even the most blatant case. She is "inspired" to write her own songs by the songs of others, just like Ray Parker Jr. was "inspired" to write the Ghostbusters theme by Huey Lewis' "I Want a New Drug." See the Sara Bareilles song "Brave" to the Katy Perry's "Roar" (which came out several months later).
That's not a thing. Most artists are inspired by other songs they hear. See the Katy Perry's song "birthday" and the Maroon 5's "Sugar" (which came out several months later)
@@preciousbetine71 Inspired is one thing, lifted while changing the lyrics and maybe the tempo is quite another. This isn't a statement on Katy Perry solely. These "artists" use a team of writers that they'll then add a line to for credit. It is a poor commentary on the state of modern pop music that it takes such a team of writers to essentially copy and rewrite songs that are so underwhelming to begin with.
As far as Perry is concerned, if she did that it's because she wanted to - not because she needs to: she doesn't. It's Katy Perry - she's not short of ideas and talent. If she was so into the song that she wanted to only make minor changes and also credit the original artist while building on it, isn't it just a case of small potatoes and everyone's happy?

Dagny's is the better song, imo. There's more space in the verses to enjoy the emotion of her lyrics. Perry's is a nonstop mess of vocals.

Ditto!
Totally agree. Also, it probably helps that Dagny's song really feels like someone trying to find the right words to express her intense love for someone, while Katy's, for lack of a better description, sounds like 5 different writers trying to make a single idea of not getting over someone.
dagny's is a good song, but perry made it her own and much better.
Zedd produced the sound don't blame always women smh 🤦
Imagine having all these writers, and this is what they come up with...
You have to understand they're not songwriters, they're producers that sit down to discuss what has already worked and how they can re-make it. But at least this time the lawyers called the original writer and have her have her deserved credits.
Hey Bryan, this may be hard to believe but...they're not writing songs for your ears.
I know. It's insane. Beyoncé is another one who needs 5+ writers for songs with incoherent lyrics.
Amateurs borrow; Pros steal-Kris Kristofferson
That's the very first thing I thought. Please tell me when, in the history of all music, did it take 9 people to write one measly song ? It actually takes a musical think-tank to come up with this ? You almost get the impression that this generation is running out of ideas.
Yes, it appears that Perry's team understood that there was a good chance they could run into © trouble and so they afford Dagny a writing credit (and the publishing money that goes with it) in exchange for not risking a lawsuit in which lawyers would be taking a chunk of those royalties for themselves in the form of legal fees. For Dagny, this is a great deal. She can now make money on two songs - and the one Katie Perry did may actually end up making her more money. On another note, the crazy number of songwriters on pop music today is not really about who wrote the song, but who is getting to share in the song writing publishing money.
@@prog.rocker your hardly thinkin bout take a walk on the wild side? That’s always the one that gets me thinking along the lines of your comment

Correct
In current pop music, having anything interesting in the words, melody, or chords would just get in the way of the important things, the production and the heavy breathing. Mostly the production.
That's even more troubling... "The rest" couldn't come up with something original and had to include the actual original creators in order to release this one. Mind-blowing...

Well said Steve.

The intro of a song called “The Ghost of You and I” that was released by a band called “Story of the Year” is totally ripped of from the intro of a song called “New Noise,” by a kickass band named “Refused.”
Story of the Year’s album was called “The Constant,” on Epitaph Records. Refused’s album that had the “New Noise” song on it was called “The Shape of Punk to Come.” Wikipedia states that the album was: *Released* October 27, 1998 *Recorded* Late 1997 Album credits: Music By, Words By - Refused
The band (Refused) was broken up/taking a long hiatus during the period of time that Story of the Year’s “The Constant” was written/released. Wikipedia says that for Refused: *Years active* 1991-1998, 2012; 2014-present
“The Shape of Punk to Come” was originally released on the “Burning Heart” record label.
I imagine it would make Refused pretty pissed off if they ever come across that theft and butchering of their amazing, ORIGINAL music, wherein they didn’t even get writing credit.
friend of mine is a international well known techno producer..... he does it 3 times a day. nobody notice...

@@jitiu4l926 But does/did Dagny? If so, she (or her producer) hid it better.
@@FPSBuzz This ^^
Why are we acting surprised that 2 songs written in the last decade sound identical to each other lol
there is that
Kinda sounds like the Chords to The Who - Baba O'Riley .too.
Rick says that at 10:25
@@jimmycampbell78 oops must have been distracted during that bit . damn i have become that person haha hangs head in shame
Who’s gonna tell him? Lol
Yeah...and it's like The Best Song Ever...wait a minute its LITERALLY like "The Best Song Ever" (OneDirection)
That Katy Perry song also very similar to Savage Garden's "I Want You" which was done way back in '96.
I know this is 2 years late to the conversation, but the vocal pattern of the Katy Perry version also reminds me a LOT of Savage Garden's "I Want You".
It’s nice having confirmation that I’m missing nothing with pop music.
😂🤣
What youre missing is writing credits that pay your whole mortage!
I keep hearing "Macarena" during the chorus
The rhythm is indeed very close, Rick should track that song too.
Yes!! Lol!!
To me, this should have been titled, "What makes this song a good alternative to waterboarding?"
this is humour
Thaaaaank you.
It’s so trash. But I Rick can sell me anything so I love it now 😍
Unfunny comment but I'll give you credit for trying

I have been following your videos recently and now I'm subscribed and belled and I love all your videos. Amazing insightful stuff you create and you have a beautiful energy that just makes everything warm and natural and organic. Big fan !
Regarding this episode , I wish you had actually done Dagny's song rather than the Katy's whacked version. Too many people whack other people's ideas and no matter if the stolen work is better , it's still stealing ! Just my thought :-)
Love all your work and keep them coming Sir !
I love this dude, how he seems to breath music.
He is a saint of music. I am learning how my talent is limited, which is critical to making the most of what you've got. There's a cliche in bicycle racing: "Train your weaknesses, race your strengths" .
He's awesome
honestly the two tracks hard panned just sound amazing together.
I find Dagny’s voice much more pleasant than Katy Perry’s
@@rkk578 :/ really...

The affectations in pop vocals is the worst aspect. Try actually singing with your natural voice for once, holy fk.
It's because Dagny has an actual voice, she's an actual musician, not an inflatable doll with a 4 note range.
@@rkk578 Ik all about sarcasm, I just know how people are, so screw off
I dig both versions, but I find myself listening to Dagny's track much more often.
Zedd uses the EXACT SAME snare in everything he does. Doesn't even bother to change the tone or color it in any way.
You should watch Rick's video on Andy Wallace. So many great albums, same sample. It sounds great.
That snare/formula paid his mortgage. That snare is green.
Rick low-key just wanted us all to hear his badass mash-up
Yeah, you can do that with Holiday (Madonna, quantized) and „when the Beat goes on“ (Whispers, played live), where Madonnas Producer stole the Bassline,
More intriguing is the Les Paul that disappears at 9:09 then reappears half a minute later. Spooky.
Very spooky indeed :) By the way: to me, the background seems to be mixed in via Chroma key, at least the contours of his shirt are jittering against the background. But I could be wrong. Whereas: a static background could save electricity. OK, just kidding.

i noticed that too! rick has mad magic
Katy Perry's guitarist was inspired by it.
