Todd in the Shadows stopped the story right when it got interesting. In 2007, the New Kids on the Block had a reunion tour that would turn out to be one of the most consequential events in pop culture history. To record their reunion album, the Kids got superproducer RedOne. For the musical number "I'm a Big Girl Now" they needed a female vocalist, so they got a local friend of producer RedOne, a New York art school student named Lady Gaga, mainly known at the time for the burlesque art deco show, the Lady Gaga Revue. They loved her vocals so much they used it on the track, and asked Lady Gaga to tour with them as their opening act. And now you know the rest of the story.

TRUE FACT: The song sounds so much like a Timbaland beat that it fooled Missy Elliot; she called Tim asking why he hid that beat away from her. Timbaland basically pleaded with her saying he didn't produce the song.

Jon O'Guin Thank you! That's what I've been arguing too. The slow ballad piano tune doesn't fit the lyrics at all. Yeah, they are about heartbreak, but that doesn't automatically make it fitting for a ballad. Especially when it's obvious the song is about someone trying to remain happy and upbeat (or at least give off the impression), despite how they actually feel. Wailing over a sad ballad tune not only defeats that meaning, but also makes it sound a bit nonsensical and rather boring.
I honestly find most ballad covers of non-ballad songs boring AF and very uninspired.
Like Todd mentioned in this video; it comes off as a lame attempt at being deep.

    • @8bitdiedie
      @8bitdiedie 6 лет назад +40

90% of the time that an upbeat song is covered as a slow, emotional song, it tends to come off as boring, pretentious and melodramatic to me. I think the problem stems from the fact that most of them rely too much on boring pop-ballad cliches (overly emphasizing the lyrics, instrumentation that's stripped of the original's notable qualities, dragging out every line for no reason etc.). This means the cover is left in this awkward position where it doesn't have the fun of the original but is also too unnecessarily intense to come off as genuinely emotional but rather "Look how much more expressive my vocals are compared to the original! Aren't I such a good singer?" instead. Too often it sounds like the shitty covers you'd hear at those talent shows on tv. But there are still plenty of good slow, emotional covers of upbeat songs as well. They're just rare.

it's been about 2 years, but i am still, STILL goddamn PISSED about this utter moron on the yt comments section for robyn's original version that said, and let me emulate the mastery of english displayed:
"the slow cover so better becoz he sing from heart, but whore only sing for money"
such disrespect for artistry. such blindness to have no appreciation for genuine feeling, trading it in for schmaltz, for melodrama, for emotion borne of artifice, meant to manipulate, not express - it bespeaks such shallowness of character
a lady like robyn's been insulted like that for her own artistry by a baboon on the internet. i hate this planet

X : DC Didn't the guy who made the ballad cover of DOMO (can't remember his name atm) first perform it in some talentshow, I think maybe Britain's Got Talent or something along those lines??
Considering how ballads and other forms of overtly expressive singing are a somewhat very formulaic staple on TV talentshows (combined with the fact it's a cover too), it's kinda hilariously sad how, whoever wrote that comment, thinks Robyn's original version of the song is somehow the more blatantly commercialised and possessing the least amount of emotional depth of the two.
Edit: I just searched up the song here on YT, to see what the name of the guy who sings on the slow ballad cover was, and I noticed how Robyn's video, which has been uploaded for 7 years, only has 15 mil views.
While the cover, which has been up for little more than 2 years, has more than 200 mil views:S
      Fuck this world.

Prince was super-protective of his music, so I naturally wonder how Jordan Knight was able to get away with covering one of his songs. Todd didn't mention it in his Trainwreckords episode on Arrested Development, but Prince didn't appreciate AD sampling his voice for "Tennessee" without his permission, which originated from "Alphabet Street". And Prince personally rang Speech up on the telephone to inform him that if he and his group were going to sample his voice, then it was going to cost them a lot of money.

With the right management, a singer can be great. My friends who were serious about their R&B, myself included, loved this song because it was a strange edgy fuck anthem that you could dance to. He never followed it up and it subsequently became "what happened to Jordan Knight? I loved Give It To You."

His follow-up single didn't chart, and his album didn't sell well. He was working on a follow-up album that was to be released in 2001, but his label Interscope shelved the album, and dropped him. I think they thought that they could use him to capitalize on teen pop (hence how he was marketed), but the issue was that he was too old, and the y2k teens don't care about NKOTB. It also didn't help that he was a ghost for most of the 90s, and didn't establish himself on his own. He could have taken more action A LOT earlier, in order to have a solid solo career.

You have to take into consider what trends and styles were popular at different times. For 1999, Jordan looked nice! Hell -- he is STILL gorgeous!
And no- Justin Timberlake's team absolutely did NOT dress JT in "slick suits" for his solo debut. You're thinking of the Futuresex/Lovesounds era, well into his solo career when he had plenty of say as to how he was styled. For "Like I Love You", his opening single from his actual solo debut Justified, it was fingerless gloves, fedoras, and lots of "urban" inspired looks. 🤷

I remember vaguely hearing this on some pop station in the summer of 1999. I never heard it after that ever again.

Can't wait to watch the 15 minutes of incoherent rage-filled screaming that will be your review of Look What You Made Me Do.
    ...
That's a joke about how bad the song is. Not about your reviews.
I know explaining jokes ruins them but I don't want you to think it was that.

Elmo9001 this is the RUclips comment section, though. Where over-explaining is still not enough explanation to keep people from misunderstanding a lot of the time ^_^

It's not that bad. It's just bad, and kinda dumb, not the worst thing ever. Plus it has a pretty funny video.

It would be an okay song to me if you cut all of the bits where she says 'Look what you made me do' with all of the passion and intensity of a dying slug.
It would be a really good song to me if you cut all of the bits where she says anything and then cut the music too and played Lone Digger by Caravan Palace instead.

I don't think the song is horrendous. I like the production and the buildup in the verses, and the lyrics are sharp too. But then it loses all momentum when it reaches the chorus and it turns into a bizarre hybrid of "My Humps"/"Me Too" by Meghan Trainor/"I'm Too Sexy". Plus, the spontaneous rapping is really cringeworthy.
I personally think Todd was way too hard on "Shake It Off" and that song is better because at least it was playful, fun, and tongue-in-cheek. When Taylor rapped on that song, it was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. If anything, that was the song that she should have said was a joke instead of "Blank Space". But I digress...
But here, I think she wants us to take the song seriously, and I'm sorry, but Taylor Swift cannot pull this off and she is trying way too hard to sound badass and edgy. She is way too dorky, vanilla, and wholesome to pull this off. It's like watching a preacher's daughter try to rebel.
But again, I like the production and the buildup and I am interested to hear the rest of the album. "Shake It Off" wasn't the best first impression either, and "1989" turned out to be a really solid pop record. So I have no doubt that there will be a few gems on "Reputation". And the music video is really funny. I really love self-deprecating humor, I guess. I just wish the chorus wasn't so horrendous.
