On April 1, 2020, COVID-19 took the life of Adam Schlesinger, co-founder, songwriter, and bassist for Fountains of Wayne, who were featured here on One-Hit Wonderland for their 2003 hit “Stacy’s Mom” (despite me being a fangirl, getting picky and snooty and not considering them mere OHWs.) They were on Conan the first week back on air after 9/11 performing the Kinks’ “Better Things” as a message of hope; and now, nearly 20 years later, Conan did a very lovely tribute the day after Adam passed, including replaying that performance. Speaking of One-Hit Wonders, Schlesinger wrote the song “That Thing You Do!” of the movie of the same name, a movie that tells the story of the one-hit Wonders AKA “Oneders”. I just wanted to mention that the world has lost a VERY talented singer, songwriter, and musician who has contributed so much, with and without the band. Fountains of Wayne were once featured on this show, but they very very much loved, and Adam did so much beyond, and now, on this episode, a slightly cheeky but 1) interesting feature and 2) relevant reference to this devastating disease caused by the Coronavirus, I just felt it would be nice to give some love to Adam Schlesinger, a TITS OHW alumnus, and a tragic loss among many thousands of other victims. He was only 52.
It's also worth mentioning that he is one of the wonderful songwriters responsible for the soundtrack of the hit CW show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Such, such, such a loss.
I'm surprised that Todd didn't mention that Corona seem to be another "Big in Japan" band. I couldn't find any info on how their singles did in Japan, but all four of their albums broke the top 10 on the Japanese album charts.
From what I read from people who have experienced both it's definitely less uptight and more relaxed. For most dance clubs in Europe the dress code is minimal, not everyone dresses up like they have to impress someone. It also helps that you don't have the 21 age limit.

Someone buried in comments probably said this 3 yrs ago, but: a lot of italo disco and its neighbors + offshoots were often even more not-giving-a-fuck about performer “authenticity” than this. The briefly outstanding French project “Valerie Dore” had a different singer but apparently also different synth + electronic drum syncing in live/video performance versus the producers/session players on the recordings. That seems to have been the norm in Italy too. It always seemed like every italo disco “band” was an ephemeral alliance of a few then-contemporary producers + musicians who might have never be all together in the same room again after they made enough material for a couple 12” singles, and then “joining” 8 other bands in the same genre and *hoping* that ANY of them would sell enough to worry about live/video appearances. Meanwhile, people from all over Europe were holiday partying in Italy and bringing the music and some of its organizational quirks home with them. It also came to North America fantastically with Lime. Milli Vanilli themselves were created by the German producer behind Boney M. Knowing some of all this context as an adult now makes it very easy to feel astounded that anyone gave a damn about the MV scandal, except to say perhaps that they were probably not worth paying to see live. In the US I think it was almost a mass hysteria from sudden revelation thatvthe *Entertainment Industry* is always selling you an artifice package of one kind or another. They were like the scapegoat for Anglo popular music after a few years of treating Def Leppard’s drummer as rock inspiration porn, while their recordings where even prior to the car accident the drums were like 100% M Mutt Lange and a Fairlight CMI. I mean sure, the drummer had creative input and played live, so every case is a little different and everyone has reasons to accept/disregard it around the music THEY are attached to. But this gets me thinking about Orson Welles’s documentary F for Fake, and not-caring about fakes so much that I’m caring-a-lot. It’s shitty how house and eurodance music later used the voices of black women whose appearances weren’t considered marketable or whatever and pissed on proper credit/compensation, but that’s its own issue, while it seems like the people who did studio work on earlier italo/euro disco tracks often just weren’t looking for a stage career or felt a little too old - both of which would apply to me if I were making italo/euro disco during its peak time. Sorry to be long as fuck, but you got me thinking about music I haven’t heard much in a decade.
I like the imagery of Todd being stuck inside his house because the Black Eyed Peas are roaming the streets playing their new music

American Millenials: "I know this song from a cover/sample or from GTA or from a movie from 5 years ago!"
European Millenials: "I know this song from my childhood because it was HUGE and everywhere and they still play it in clubs and fun fairs and it never really went away!"
It may not count since I was born in Germany but I lived a lot of my life in America and I mostly got songs off of an old iPod from 2000 and it had a variety of songs from everywhere on it.
Old millennials such as myself were born in the early 80's. We totally remember Eurodance as it was heavily played during all of my middle school dances whenever they weren't playing "Whoomp! There it is!" and "Tootsee Roll."
They DO still play this song and other eurodance hits in clubs, but generally only in gay clubs where the genre is a staple.

Apparently the European club scene is way more lively and fun than the US one, and I’m a sad homebody who listens to euro dance quietly in her room.
From what I read from people who have experienced both it's definitely less uptight and more relaxed. For most dance clubs in Europe the dress code is minimal, not everyone dresses up like they have to impress someone. It also helps that you don't have the 21 age limit.
Clubbing in south america is pretty great too in their own way.

I interpreted the sunshine as a spotlight pointing towards the person she was interested in in the middle of a dark club.
I like that
And also those parties tend to go till the morning, so when they all get out they'll eventually see sunshine,,,, i guess?? i'm tripping

So...I dance like Olga...😔. * continues to dance.*
"daydrinking at 11 am which now my 6pm" is such a fucking mood
I've been watching so much drag race lately that DeBarge instantly started playing in my head when I read the title
Black Box song at 7:30 is actually "Ride on Time", and it's an absolute belter!
you just walk right in, walk, walk, walk right in
So I finally did it! I finished all the "One Hit Wonderland" videos! Thank you for all of your content. I really enjoyed all of your videos! That was such a wonderful journey of music history!
I'm not much of a dancer but the way you described this song is perfect - it really does make dancing seem like the most important, soul-cleansing thing you can do. Also interesting that that's pretty much how the song is used in Claire Denis' "Beau Travail" - obviously she must have thought something similar to you. Absolutely one of the best film endings of all time.
Balcony DJ sounds ideal for those who want to work on their sniper skills while they're trapped in neighboring apartments.
Todd it's not Italo House unless the piano chords are specifically played on the Korg M1 :P
Jeremy Abel I was just gonna say...
Wait...does that make "Good Vibrations" Italo House?
I also herd distinctive piano chords a lot in Deee-Lite's first 2 albums. Good times.
That M1 piano was - and still is - ubiquitous in 90’s dance music.
And that sentence is really poorly constructed. I meant it was unbiquitous in 90’s dance and still in modern dance too.
"Standing outside a broken phone booth with money in my hand" by Primitive Radio Gods would be great for this series
Yes!!
