I much prefer Life. It just felt bigger to me. I was a competitive rock climber at the time and it was my warm up tune; it really did exactly what I needed, hyped but not too much.
Props to the female vocalist. I could care less about the lyrics, I'm waiting for that belt to kick in. Then again, that's the case with most of these songs. I don't remember anything in C+C Music Factory except for when Martha Wash belts something out like "EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!!!" or "GOOD Vi-BRAY-shuu-UU-UUNS!".

Also, not even mentioning Dr. Alban by name in that 90's team-up? Come on, the man's a legend. It's like talking about a duet with Bon Jovi, and not mentioning Bon Jovi.
Not sure if he'd count it, just because it only BARELY charted in America (it was 72 on the Hot 100 and 14 on the dance charts). I have no memory of it on the radio or TV or anywhere else but the internet and as far as I can tell, O-Zone never tried having another hit in America.

As an avid 90s clubber, the song felt simultaneously legendary and represented how constricted the market for that polished pop sound was at the time for a song as slight as this to be legendary.

I still love that you even mentioned 2Unlimited, because I was juuust old enough to be there for it when they became REAL big, only I always thought they only got big in the Netherlands. It wasn't until approximately 20 years later that I realised they were actually KNOWN beyond their (and my) own country and it still makes me proud the way in that silly "yay home team" way.
'Life' was quite similar to 'What Is Love' and rode the crest of the wave successfully (in Europe at least). That he followed it up with a ballad, 'I Miss You', was quite a shock, and the fact it was a modest hit rather than a career-stalling flop was quite remarkable, looking back now. I do have to look up that collaboration with Dr Albarn now; I had no idea that existed and it sounds hilarious!
Damn, this man was pretty successful... music career aside. Like, political science (citation needed), a published essay, two record labels, and a football career. PLUS A ONE HIT WONDER!
I love "Move Your Dead Bones!" So glad you mentioned it, and covered this song! P.S. Even Geico has poked fun at how big of a one-hit wonder "Final Countdown" by Europe was. Please tell me you're going to do that at some point.
Which song would be best to use, though? Phantom? All I Ask of You? Angel of Music? ...I'd kind of like to see if someone could mix Point of No Return with this.
Oh dear, stumbled upon this video again whilst being on a binge and you making a joke about What Is Love being a folk version instead made me think of this recent cover that tries to sound.. I guess tropical and like modern EDM? It pretty much replaced the original version on many radio stations around here. Same happened a few other songs, like Narcotic from Liquido, which I don't think was ever big in the US, but was sorta huge in Europe.
Would you be willing to do "I Will Survive?" And I would say it's because Will had some funny still left in him. Meanwhile Ray Ramono happened, and then Cris Kattan was never heard from again. Good call, as Chris Kattan is obnoxious.
I do agree that "What Is Love" conveys the atmosphere that you are in a cathedral or opera house while listening to it, but it wasn't just dance music that was doing that in the '90s, "The One" by Elton John conveys that atmosphere as well.
~7:20 I completely agree that the song sounding "big" gives it a nice feeling. Every love song I've ever actually liked are over the top Love songs like "I need a Hero" "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News, "Accidentally in love" by Counting Crows also has a lot of energy. Disney love songs are a bit of an exception 12:20 I feel bad that _"I love the 90's"_ would probably be on my playlist... if _Running in the 90's_ weren't such a good song that fills that quota for me.

Seems like Todd chooses an artist/song for the segment based mostly on whether or not most _people_ can remember more than one of their hits, rather than by how many hits they had overall.
considering he just dropped his 'macarena' episode, it looks like you might be right..
I had an immediate and visceral reaction to that 5-second clip of "What is Love 2k9," god damn. That was.... something.
"Todd in the Shadows. What is Love. FOREVER."

9:36 SEAL HAD HAIR?!?Mind.Blown.
It's been 10 years since I've last heard that song, still as good as the first day I heard it!
Did you get introduced to it through a video about fanfiction, too?
Yep! my older brother was a fan of zarla's stuff, so naturally I found it as well
Cool!
First of all how dare you I love Mr Vain.
Secondly early nineties dance music is my childhood.
Can somebody please make a remix of this and Phantom of the Opera?!
Sailor Italy look on RUclips for Harajuku’s Phantom of the Opera. It’s gloriously cheesy and epic.
Which song would be best to use, though? Phantom? All I Ask of You? Angel of Music?
...I'd kind of like to see if someone could mix Point of No Return with this.
Curt Clark The song at 7:04
Oh dear, stumbled upon this video again whilst being on a binge and you making a joke about What Is Love being a folk version instead made me think of this recent cover that tries to sound.. I guess tropical and like modern EDM? It pretty much replaced the original version on many radio stations around here. Same happened a few other songs, like Narcotic from Liquido, which I don't think was ever big in the US, but was sorta huge in Europe.
Would you be willing to do "I Will Survive?"
And I would say it's because Will had some funny still left in him. Meanwhile Ray Ramono happened, and then Cris Kattan was never heard from again. Good call, as Chris Kattan is obnoxious.

Got to do, got to do with it?
I love you, Always, Forever; Near and far, Always, Forever
This is the second video I've seen him mention Move them Dead Bones from Re-Animator... Mad Props my man! LOL
Super late comment: But what was the first time he's mentioned it?
I do agree that "What Is Love" conveys the atmosphere that you are in a cathedral or opera house while listening to it, but it wasn't just dance music that was doing that in the '90s, "The One" by Elton John conveys that atmosphere as well.
One Hit Wonderland is one of my favorite series. Keep up the good work Todd, and don't go Haddaway(sorry).
Disney love songs are a bit of an exception
12:20 I feel bad that _"I love the 90's"_ would probably be on my playlist... if _Running in the 90's_ weren't such a good song that fills that quota for me.
Been having a rough week. Thank you for posting this.
