  • Build a rubber band powered cannon from a crisp tin and a drinks bottle and use it to explore projectile motion and conservation of energy...or just knock down any target you can think of.

In this fun kids activity, Andrea Sella and his children experiment with materials to build the best catapult possible. They then use the slingshot to investigate how things fly through the air. By predicting and altering the variables, Andrea's sons get a feel for the scientific method while doing a great summer activity.
ExpeRimental, brought to you by the Royal Institution of Great Britain, is a series of free short films that make it fun, easy and cheap to do science at home with children aged 4 to 10. Our films give you lots of ideas for kids' activities that will help you explore the world around you, question and experiment together. We'll show you how to do the activity and how to make sure adults and children get the most out of it. Why not have a go and then tell us what you think on our Facebook page? / ri.experimental

The two lads seem very well mannered and smart, that's great for our future. It's nice to see kids act like this.

I often "upcycle" toys like these for the kids like this.
The best way to teach any subject is through play.

      Small world...
We should have had these films two years ago. A science camp isn't going to be due in a couple years again. ;-)

Which is the best cannon? The one with the flattest trajectory

I guess the best catapult is the one that's accurate :P no use to have a catapult that shoots very hard and far but somehow manages to hit you in the eyeball even when you point it away from you
