"Why do monkeys still exist?" I replied to someone's comment in another thread which asked "Why do monkeys still exist today?" so I wanted to clear up this confusion. This is a misconception about evolution, we did not come from monkeys, we came alongside them. I'll answer this as simply as I can below: It is because of something called speciation. It occurs when a population is divided for whatever reason, and the two groups do not intermingle again. After a very long time and many generations, changes in the environment favor some traits or hurt others. Different traits will be favored in those two groups that were once the same many generations past. During this time, mutations occur during meiosis (sperm and egg production in the body) or during fertilization that make very small changes in the overall gene pool, but can develop into more prominent changes (or disappearances) over time. Mutations occur in DNA so after many changes in the group's genetics over a long period of time, individuals from each group would no longer be able to create viable offspring. Speciation has now occurred and the two separate species will continue to change in new and different ways as the mutations keep occurring over time. A very long time ago, this happened to the species that was the common ancestor between us and monkeys. It happened most recently too between us and chimpanzees, the primates most closely related to us. This is why monkeys s̶t̶i̶l̶l̶ exist today.

Dang it.. I cried at the end with the spy monkey seeing how sad the monkey’s were. And they all hung their heads lower.. I feel it’s very interesting with the black macaques in the beginning. they had an abundance of food, water and shelter in the thick jungle, they had less tension and anger towards each other. They started learning new things and being compassionate. Very human like qualities with the cuddles and hugs and asking each other for it instead of just doing it for the sake of dopamine. Imagine how quality of life could just be amazing like that? I’m a bit spoiled as I was born into a house my grandparents built and still live at home.
