  • I hope you enjoyed seeing me put together a DIY dry mix for my parrots! This is not a complete diet - this is what I feed them in combination with other ingredients of an evening for their dinner.
    For breakfast they get a wide variety of vegetables, sprouted seeds, sprouted grains, sprouted legumes, herbs, soaked nuts and a small amount of fruit.

    That mix looks fantastic! I’ll need to try it with my 3 cockatiels and 2 budgies.
    I’ve found my lot eat the freeze dried veggies more readily, rather than just nibbling at them, if I bash them up a bit (the veggies not the birds, lol ) with a pestle and mortar so that the pieces are smaller. I do this with the Top’s pellets too. I have a fussy bunch. 😂
    My flock also like Squeaky Beak Budgie Smuggler’s Blend, which I discovered thanks to your channel, added to their dry mix a few times a week.

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  2 года назад +3

      You can do a fresh meal for dinner if that works for your situation and lifestyle!
      Both fresh and dry are good for getting a wide variety of nutrition. I don’t think my flock would eat another helping of fresh food at night if the same mix!
      Dry can be left in overnight too as it won’t spoil 😊

    Thank you Sophie, so many ingredients I had no idea I could feed my boys! All the grains are already in my cupboard because I eat them myself, but had no idea they would like barley, groats and buckwheat! In a different video I saw a lady put quinoa in her bird mix: do you think it's a good idea? They always beg the cooked quinoa from my plate, and enjoy it so much, but I had no idea they could eat it dry.

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  Год назад

      Glad you found it useful 😊 you can use quinoa and we have in the past but it has a bitter taste when dry so not all birds like it!
      Also you don’t have to cook it for them - the healthiest way to offer is soaked for 2 hours, or soaked then sprouted for a day 😊

    • @pixxa37
      @pixxa37 Год назад

      @@BirdNerdSophie did you try and rinse the quinoa MANY MANY times? you need to, in order to get rid of the saponine which is very bitter and not so good. Same for the quinoa prepared for humans: rinsing multiple times is necessary.

But I have a favor to ask you, my male cockatiel started moving his tongue and beak a few days ago, as if he is breathing through mouth, it looks like a chewing motion but her beak is also moving up and down and her tongue also, it's also making clicking sounds while he does it, a few days ago, he didn't did it often but now he is doing it all the time, he is also not eating, not singing, barely any chirps, he looks tired and stiff. He is fluffed up and perching most of the time (since the winter but now it's not cold at all) note: we changed the rooms so he took a long time adjusting, after he adjusted he started singing and chirps again but now it has stopped, he eats when I give him from my finger, but sometimes he doesn't eat a lot from my finger either, he hasn't been eating alot since yesterday, we booked a vet, but I want your advice till we go to the vet, (he is also not active alot. I google it and seems like it's respiratory problems but he isn't having all the symptoms, for example : his eyes aren't wet, no tail bobbing, etc, only the mouth breathing thing but it's more like a chewing motion but weirder, what do you think it is? Best thing to do when he gets home is get him straight back in his cage and let him spend the rest of the day in there relaxing. You can offer treats through the bars and see if he will take them - many birds are a bit flustered for the rest of the day!

      In moderation it’s okay but it’s very high in sugar comparatively fresh fruit, and some dried fruit contains preservatives which birds can’t have!

    Hi, I have long planned to get my birds off pellets and make a dry mix, as I now have the opportunity to do it because their pellets ran out😅. How much of it should be grains, how much of it flowers/herbs/spices, etc? Thanks 🙂 (for more info it's 5 budgies and a cockatiel)

      Hey! There’s no right answer really! The key is to get as much diversity as possible so there isn’t too much of any one thing!

      @@BirdNerdSophie Ok, thanks! I don't think I'm going to be able to put a lot of stuff in, as a minor who used her own money, but I'll try my best! :) I'll share the recipe here when I do.

      @@parrotblossom sounds good! Do you mind me asking what country you are in? As you might be able to buy 2-3 pre made high quality mixes and blend together which already have lots of ingredients in!

      @@BirdNerdSophie I am from South Africa(I have commented a few times on this channel) and unfortunately there isn't any people who sell dry mixes(I hope to be the first!) so I have to make my own. TOP's pellets is really expensive here, and Harrison's doesn't even exist here lol.

      Haha thank you! I'm not sure that going into the pet food business is on the cards for us at the moment!

    I had ordered ingredients and I am waiting for them to be mailed to me, had already made the smallest batch with just spices, flowers, herbs and gently dehydrated sprouts I grown and dehydrated myself, for adding to the poopie grade pellets I have (no better options to purchase locally 🥹), looking for more seeds though, you can get veggie/berry seeds for sprouting like kale, broccoli, blackberry and more which are high in goodies as well! I am pretty sure you don’t have to sprout this seeds so you can sprout them but you don’t have to, you can just straight up use them. I sprouted them anyway because I was intending on drying some of them and freezing some of them to be eaten raw with chop.

      Sounds like you are getting lots of diversity in there! 😊
