Dragonball evolution had a budget of 57,497,699 dollars, and it sucked. This had a budget of 10,000 dollars and it was amazing. So heres some math for ya, if everyone who watched this donated a quarter than they'd have the funding for a whole season of this. 325,000 to 400,000 dollars . FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

No, not everyone can do that. And there is more to it than that. You can feel the authenticity of the video flowing through the sounds, the choreography, and the dialogue. There is just the right blend of old and new. Fantasy and realism. They might need a sound engineer, but let's get real. This is Machinama, not 20th century, Lion's gate, or Lucas Films. What is here is a perfectly acceptable reboot of a little-spoken time in the DBZ storyline. This puts profession all productions like DB Evolution to shame.
Ryufan60 I agree with you that they are just following an existing plot. I'm a sound engineer, you cannot judge all the work only for an issue on the mix. (It is never easy).
So, the only way to demonstrate your sentence is to do something like this for yourself. And ever then, maybe you have not do it enterely. :)

LudeandLude I find the script kind of cringey but other than that you're right on the money. While I wouldn't go to say it's better than a Hollywood film, it's leaps and leagues beyond that crappy DBZ adaptation that came out years ago. Money can't get you everything, it only buys man hours, and with enough dedication, skill and time you can easily accomplish the same.

Now then in terms of what you did here, its actually not half bad since you followed the animated version very closely and not made any drastic changes... It could use a little work though...

I can only imagine what could be done with a good size budget, some A-listers(not sure which ones) and make it into a trilogy of 3+ hour movies like the LOTR trilogy.

Piotr Rossa This has incredibly high production values so it's likely expensive to create. They need the funding as well as the time to make it incredible so we shouldn't pressure them into cutting corners so we can get it earlier. It's kind of like trying to perfectly reproduce the art in the Sistine Chapel and everyone wants it done that day.
And yes, I did indeed compare this film to Michelangelo. To me, it's that good.
exactly, David Coyle everyone (million dollar companies) dropped the idea of a Live Action DBZ Adaptaion when Evolution made less than it took to make the movie itself, this proves that it is doable and if they had the same budget, would outshine DB Evolution even in effects... the DB Evolution writer said he wanted to stray from the original DB Plot as much as possible to make it unique :/ Bad Call

This is actually one of the better made Live Action DBZ fan films I've ever seen.
You even made the Saiyan hair look more realistic than other films (they usually make it too glowy and obviously fake). Fantastic work.

Agreed. Fall of Men had great CGI for Cell and the fight, but the costuming, casting and even the dialogue was of a low grade.
this is best so far fall of men sucked almost to an evolution magnitude
+Raun Carswell actually I found the CGI in fall of men overdone for the action. Notice that the close shots of cell before the action has no movement. They couldn't animate their model for much movement and we found out why when the action started. The CGI models where on such a low grade that it looked like a crappy video game. All of the fighting and movement were awfully unnatural and the long shots of the fight just made it easier to notice. Now this is understandable, because they didn't have a Hollywood budget. But RobotUnderdog goes around this issue by using their CGI models sparingly and for only quick moments so that we don't have time to recognize the low grade CGI. Instead, they film quick, closer shots of the actors when the are battling, and edit effects around them. This not only looks more natural and realistic, it always is better quality and gives more of a Hollywood action film feel to it. Fall of Men was a good attempt and is commendable, but Light of Hope seems more promising.

So you'll be disappointed to know that the Dragonball Evolution's budget was $45kk. So they must have invested something in advertising (which increased the budget for ~$5kk... and overall revenue was $57.5kk. My guess is that they got something around ~$7kk profit for that shit.

jiely plays At least Dragon Ball Evolution was so bad that it made Akira Toriyama want to continue Dragon Ball. (Hence the new Dragon Ball stuff)
I think it was just the popularity of Dragon Ball that made him return (Also popular media is a great money maker); not a terrible movie. Plus he wouldn't continue it years after the movie if that was the case.
DraconicEpic He said in an interview that it were the terrible live action movies and anime scripts that made him return. It wasn't only the Evolution movie, but also the script of the new DB movie (probably Battle of Gods) that was handed to him and that he thought was unfitting. He said the anger about the adaptions made him realize how much love he still had for DB, and he edited the script himself and started working on the new DB stuff.
Him continuing DB because of the money is such a cliché reason. He has more money than one could spend and he would've made money of the new DB stuff even if he didn't directly work on the scripts. Also, if he was just about the money then why make a two decades long break in the first place. Looking at his interviews, he's really not the type of perso who could work on something that doesn't interest him. Even at DB's peak he only drew 13 pages a week instead of 19 because for him it was about the fun of it.

if you are going to be like that, then gohan doesn't look like gohan either...But overall, they played their roles well, that's what's important in my opinion. They preserved the character from the anime, which is more important then looking exactly the same.

I think my favorite part was the fight choreography. Gohan was shown to have a great deal of technique while 17 used his superior attributes, like speed and strength, to beat down Gohan. Gohan had blocks, counters, and combos. 17 just rushed to pin Gohan to a point where he could use his strength and hopefully actually hit Gohan.

For those of you complaining that Gohan and Trunks should have been "white", I'd say it's as silly as wanting salsa dancers to be portrayed by white people. When I think of martial arts the only white martial artist that could possibly come in mind is Chuck Fucking Norris...
well with a saiyan it could really go either way. Gohan should be asian as chi-chi is but I just never saw trunks like that, his skin tone seemed darker then gohans and the like.

It was always my understanding that the Saiyans are more Japanese in features, while alot of the story in dragon ball is Chinese in setting at first, and the martial arts itself is more chinese in style. But the Saiyans,Radditz, Nappa and Vegeta have more traditional , straight forward Karate style martial arts. I always thought Briefs and Capsule corp,with their English names, were white. And that Trunks was a mixed kid. As was Gohan and Goten. The RRA is obviously Caucasian and plays with German / Nazi styled themes. I have no explanation for what the fuck #19 is.

I don't even know where to begin...!! This was so beautifully done that it brings a tear to my eye. THIS is the type of thing we should have gotten from 'Dragonball: Evolution but that was garbage but THIS was.. THIS is what happens when you put real fans behind a project and actually care for your work and the source material. Like even that segment where Gohan is nursing his wounds talking to Goku (in spirit) -- that shit was dope. This whole film gave me life. Man if these film production companies don't see the potential in properly bringing DBZ to the big screen then they missed the ship! With the incredible on-going storyline in addition to fight choreography/special effects not many films can even have the pleasure of showcasing, this has the potential to be big! S/o to +RobotUnderDog because this shit was incredible! I'm very satisfied with this and am looking forward to the series. I had soo many feels while watching this, the atmosphere is great especially for this story since its a dark time. That super saiyan transformation looks so natural as if that what it would really look like. So damn awesome guys! Job well done! Fucking amazing, definitely worth the wait, i cannot wait for "the next episode of Dragon Ball Z"!! Keep up the great work guys. :)

I'm a avid DBZ fan but some of you other fans don't deserve crap. You nitpick too much, you're ungrateful.
This was well done project for it's budget. You all expect too much from these fan made adaptations. This body of work is faithful to the sources and respectful as well. Things Dragonball Evolution wasn't Fox just wanted to make a Spiderman movie using Dragonball characters and putting Goku in highschool. It was the worst crap I ever scene.
I don't get the complaining about the fight scenes. In DBZ they are fight at lightning fast speeds and even faster, how do you translate that to live action. You gotta use quick cuts and editing and special effects to do that and keep it balanced and I think they did it perfectly.

Acting is what I expected from amateurs. Hell the kid that plays Trunks already looks better than the kid that played Aang in The Last Airbender adaptation. You're not gonna get top notch actors for a project like this. Especially when you need martial artists. Not alot of martial arts out that are GREAT actors for a project like this. I'll rather have good martial artists that can''t act than actors who have no martial arts experience at all, good example Justin Chatwin... how that turn out?
Dragonball Z isnt even dependent on alot of dialogue, it''s straight fun action with incridible ground shaking battles. The story of Dragonball Z is simple as well. Classic good vs evil. Don't know what yall expect but it's funny. All DBZ is about fighters getting stronger and fighting the next stronger villain that shows up. What do you expect? The Dark Knight? Sophisticated dialogue?

i agree 100%. for the budget given to them and to do such a great job. i have been a dbz fan for over 20 yrs and this is the first live adaptation to do the series justice. the fox piece of crap just took a dump on the whole series. cant wait for another episode and hope they keep up the good work

That’s smart to hit the opponent when they are charging up a big attack, or powering up, or transforming, or trash talking, or taking a dump, or simply not looking your way. It is funny even Vegeta tried to do it in early days. Like when he was in great ape form attacked Goku before spirit bomb could be completed. And he threw sand in Zarbon’s eyes to win. And later he killed Reccoom and Buter while they were already down. He also sneak attacked Frieza in second form from behind. Then all the sudden “Saiyan honor” came out of nowhere...
Gotta say, Live action and Dragonball Z had me more then a little apprehensive to say the least. I wasn't expecting anything other then a few cheap laughs at some cheesy amateurs butchering my Favorite Dragonball Z movie of all time. But I was beyond shocked at the obvious care, dedication, attention to detail and overall quality of the the PILOT ALONE. At one point I even had to step back and say, "This is for real!" Even the guys at Machinima see the talent you bring to the table. fight scenes are done Dragonball Z style, without going over bored. the tones are also very dark, The music is even a surprise. Its not a carbon copy of the original themes we grew up loving, but the new themes feel like they belong here, the CGI is better then any movie short of those with MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BUDGETS!!! Looking forward to more, don't let haters discourage you. Dragonball Z is easy to screw up, and your defiantly not. This is Dragonball Z made by Fans, for Fans! (And it's awesome.) :)

The thing about live action needing to be for the actual fans is what prevents the huge budget necessary to make it awesome. Marvel is doing it right, they've found the proper middle ground to give to the real fans joy and people who've never read a comic book entertainment. You need general appeal because movies are like anything else produced, they're made for a profit. Producers and execs would okay a 200 million dollar budget if they it would gross internationally 800 million.

I think the problem is that ppl want them to immediately just into DBZ, it would be more successful if it was just a bit more slightly grounded like the beginning of Dragon Ball. that means starting off with kid Goku all the way til he finally learns to read ppls actions, ki blasts, fly, etc... That means a film project in the works probably longer than the MCU has planned. But think about it, by the end the technology would be so far ahead that the finished product would be even more fluid with the powers/special effects.
