  • Airline carriers have been shrinking seats for years, prompting Congress in 2018 to order the FAA to set new standards to ensure passengers can evacuate in 90 seconds or less, but their testing was widely criticized. Now, as part of the FAA reauthorization bill signed into law, Congress is demanding a do-over.

    Based on my past experience, simulation tests should replicate real-life scenarios, including cabinet settings with obstacles such as pillows on the floor, seat belts fastened, and potential distractions like people sleeping or watching entertainment. In these tests, all participants are well-prepared for evacuation procedures.

    • @aaawac2174
      @aaawac2174 12 дней назад +3

      Really, what they should do is go to the airlines and ask them their statistics on age, number of carry-ons, and wheelchair assisted people. Then take that data to simulate a full plane load and see how long an evacuation takes. Cause I can guarantee anyone that boards wheelchair assisted will be carried off that aircarft to a slide.

      It doesn't take a college degree to see how much of a joke this "test" was. It's just checking a box to say we did a test. It's like a mechanic popping the hood of you car, shine a flash light back and forth once without bending over or touching the car, and saying that car is mechanically sound. There should be investigations into bribery or corruption for those involved because it smells very fishy.

    The real reason why Japan Airline took longer than the theoretical time of “90 sec” is because the PA system broke down after the crash, resulting in not being able to communicate with the captain. There were also multiple exists that couldn’t be used due to fire.

    • @heyaisdabomb
      @heyaisdabomb 9 дней назад

      Yes, and that is the real world. If you study air crashes, usually half or less of the exits work, this is why there are so many of them. The FAA knows this, but they they needed to check a box for airlines clearly.

    This is why I think we may see FAA and EASA mandates for economy class to have at least 31" seating pitch and 18" seat width. The airlines may grumble but it's cheaper than a possible multimillion-dollar wrongful death lawsuit because passengers can't get out of the plane in time.

    Airlines will have to compete on price and comfort once High Speed Rail gets built. That's why flights are so cheap in Europe. Because customers could just take a train if the airline tries to rip them off. In the US we have no other option. For coast to coast, planes will still be necessary but for the more frequent trips from LA to SF or Houston to Dallas or Atlanta to Charlotte, High Speed Rail will be the obvious first choice.

    That’s impressive! Here in Canada you could NOT get the federal government to do that. What would happen here is that the very few airlines would say that this is too much stress for them to deal with so the federal government would drop the issue. With some bribery money of course.

    • @heyaisdabomb
      @heyaisdabomb 9 дней назад

      Well the test is to check a box, it's clear there was bribery money because the test was a less than half full plane, with able bodied people with all exits working, no seat belts, not obstacles, no smoke or fire. I mean, This is the opposite of the real world, and it doesn't take a math major to see the Swiss cheese sized holes in this "test".

      That is the real world. This is part of the problem with the tests. I know they want you to leave it, but who is going to pay me for the $6,000 of electronics in my backpack? Surely not the airlines. So people don't want to lose their stuff. The system is broken, that's the point, and yet the FAA tells us everything is great!

  • @JasonB808

    People want cheap tickets so airlines with the cheapest tickets have the most crammed seats. The only way to reverse the trend is to pay more for more space. The it would be an arms race to have the most spacious seats. It’s already happening in on international routes. The business class seats are getting more spacious and more comfortable. This because airlines can charge a lot of money for those seats.

    They also need to address the issues for the disabled, elderly and vulnerable people. Aircraft are not safe to access for many people under ideal circumstances let alone in emergencies. The physical sizes of emergency escape hatches and the location almost guarantee most disabled or elderly people would be unable to get out via wing exits etc.

I wouldn't think most narrow-bodies would need much wider of a seat considering most fly with fewer passengers than wide-bodies.
