"We recorded the whole thing (the album) in about 2 or 3 days, live in the studio. The song "Paranoid" was written as an afterthought. We basically needed a 3 minute filler for the album, and Tony came up with the riff. I quickly did the lyrics, and Ozzy was reading them as he was singing." - Geezer Butler (bass)

Paranoid is probably one of the most influential songs to ever be released! Paranoid & Black Sabbath are absolutely perfect records! Words cannot describe what those first two records mean to me. They’re dark,heavy but also jazzy as hell. I love that!
You should react to Black Sabbath live in Paris in 1970. My recommendations are:
1) Fairies Wear Boots
2) Rat Salad
3) NIB
4) Hand of Doom
They might mean a lot to you but to call them perfect is pushing it dude maybe by the days standards but now they’d be looked at as cell phone recorded demos. Still fantastic albums though
The first 4 Sabbath albums are great from start to finish. Almost impossible to find albums like that these days since music just isn’t consumed the way it used to be.

When it comes to Ozzy's speaking voice, he's hit or miss. I've seen a few interviews where he's very easy to understand and others where it's a garbled mess. I really think when he's in his moments of clarity and off of substances it's quite noticeable. One thing that has never ever failed him is his singing voice. I'd be hard pressed to remember seeing a concert performance where he was really off his game. Ozzy is an absolute legend! 🤘
The only time was the concert in Russia in 89 I believe because he was completely obliterated on drugs and booze and you could tell, but it was only for the first song. After that he was back with his A game. So it took like a 20 hour trip, jet lag, all the Cocaine from the movie Scarface and enough Russian Vodka to drown and Elephant to give Ozzy singing problems for one song.

Your right, i've never been to one of his or a Sabbath gig where his voice failed him, But twice in the early eighties i had tickets for his gig's, and they were cancelled because his voice failed him. So technically your right, but his voice has failed him.
I like the way she say's he's trying hard to pronounce his word's. Yeah right! Like Ozzy's ever been worried about his pronunciations, he's a working class Brummie and he didn't care that people knew it.
Early 80s he was too wasted/strung out to sing well. 2 or 3 concerts all I know of.
@@snowblindoz I went to The Black Sabbath Never Say Die Tour when Van Halen opened for them and blew them away, and Ozzy couldn't even stand up, let alone sing, he was so fucked up.

Ozzy's perfect pronunciation while singing is a gift of the metal gods! He is the one and only Prince of Darkness and a true Guardian of Metal!
Honestly as a person from England in the UK, Black Sabbath is one of my all time favourite Heavy Metal Bands along with all the other classics like Maiden and Metallica.
I cannot stress enough that if you are a fan of Sabbath you NEED to check out their last live performance ever called The End of The End from 2017. Its about 2hrs long and it was incredible, I tried to get tickets but missed out… But if you watch it you will not regret it.
I’ve played in Metal bands for the majority of my life as a Lead Guitarist, its my hobby. I’m 22. And Tony Iommi has been one of my main inspirations since I first heard him play. He makes that guitar fucking singggg! 🤪
I don't particularly like labelling bands and indeed Sabbath didn't like the label Heavy Metal as well. They are streets ahead of Maiden and Metallica and they are not even in the same class in my opinion. If you have ever heard Lemmy speak he considers Motorhead Rock and Roll or even the first realization of Punk, along with the Ramones. Of course this is just my opinion but who cares, we all love some Sabbath.

Ozzy does have a relatively thick accent when he speaks normally, but if you listen to him speak when he's sober you can understand him just fine (especially when he was younger). The problems arise when he's blitzed out of his head, which has sadly been the case during many an interview, particularly after he left Sabbath.

Hey Aileen. Thanks for another great reaction. Black Sabbath were the forerunners of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. This song is effectively simple and it was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. Guitarist Tony Iommi crushed the tips of his middle and ring fingers in a machine he was working on in a factory and he moulded plastic tips to allow him to continue playing. That's so rock n' roll! As always, it's a pleasure to watch that eyebrow...it's so expressive🤨

Without these guys and a couple others namely Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, and The Who you would not have the fabulous metal we have today.

Honestly the first 2 albums "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" are brilliant. So many hits. For me the first 5 albums are the best. I really like the bluesy sound in their earlier work.

"Hole In The Sky" doesn't get enough love, Aileen. give that one a listen. The whole "Sabotage' lp is a storm. They went through hell making it, lawyers and litigations, dispute with their x-manager, but they managed to come up with something great out of it.

@@donlebo6824 Vol 4 w Hole In The Sky and Supernaught; along w SBS were both good...but if I had to pick my faves, it would be Paranoind & MOR. After SBS, they weren't as good IMO.
Sabotage is my favorite album and they made it on their own because of their split with their managers who stole millions from them. The Writ is about their managers....
The song "Paranoid" was written in a very short period of time in the studio. Like in an hour or so. They were told by the record company they needed another song for the album and they came up with this pretty much on the spot. Also, the band wanted the album to be named "War Pigs" but the record company wouldn't go for it and, thus, it became Paranoid.

Lo curioso es que siempre asociamos Black Sabbath con el gran Tony Iommi, su guitarrista, y con Ozzy y Dio, que fueron sus dos cantantes legendarios, sim embargo esta canción Paranoid, fue escrita por su bajista Gezzer Buttler.

I was born in ‘72. I finally got to see Black Sabbath when they got back together on the “13” album tour. I went to the concert by myself. It was awesome!

Symptoms of the universe is an early very heavy song by them. Ozzys vocals are crazy. And the studio version is best for the second half being a part not played in live shows.
Knowing how to sing in time and use licks to make your voice stand out and clear is an art. That's part of being pro.

I remember when black sabbath first came out they wasn't excepted by the mainstream it really was the late 70s before they started getting the credit they deserved. In the beginning they scared the hell out people..lol Geat reaction our beautiful rock angel 🤘🤘😇

I saw Sabbath live in 1995 and they were GREAT!!!!! I brought a friend with me who thought they were some scary death metal band, but by the end he was fully grooving to it too! 🎉

The last time I saw Black Sabbath was at Ozzfest 2001 in Dallas. At that time Bill Ward was still drumming for them. It was definitely one of the top shows I've ever seen live. I was in the pit area in front of the bassist Geezer Butler. Ozzy brought out a harmonica and they jammed out The Wizard. Some lucky guy in the crowd caught that harmonica after Ozzy tossed it. That concert was better with ALL the original members, which is why I passed on their later shows.
The song "Black Sabbath" from the album of the same name is a great song and a good showcase of their talents. Also since Sabbath are often credited as being the founders of metal the fact that it's from their first album makes it a bit of a history lesson, doesn't it?
I look forward to someday seeing your take on the Dio era of Sabbath.

This is the music that hooked me on metal. Sabbath is so bass driven and Geezer Butler is the whole reason I play bass. Being 4 piece, Geezer filled all the gaps and kept the feel during leads. Him and Bill Ward locked together and no matter what Tony or Ozzy did, they were rock solid. Losten to their title somg, Black Sabbath and another great one is The Wizard. I could list 20 songs from them in a heartbeat that are iconic and bad ass

Never really thought about it till your reaction - but for sure - you can hear ALL the lyrics. So yes, his enunciation was good. You can't say that for many metal bands!

This was the first song I ever learned to play on Guitar, Bass, and Drums. Very easy to play. The second was War Pigs. That was a little harder, but not too hard. Great times.

I recommend listening to Children of the Grave. Honestly, with my favorite band, it is hard to go wrong with any of their songs, but this one has always held a special place for me. It is about revolution, recognition of our mistakes and hope for future generations to stand taller.

I recommend "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." That whole album is great, but the title track is awesome. I also suggest "Iron Man." It's kind of the quintessential Ozzy-era Black Sabbath song and I think it's a must for anyone just getting into the band. Anyway, great video!!

That interesting guitar tone during the solo is the sound of a slashed amp speaker. They used to do that before distortion pedals were a thing.
Regarding the annunciation, I think Ozzys inability to speak properly in recent times, is due to ridiculous amount of drug taking. The song was recorded 50 years ago, before his nervous system was absolutely destroyed. Total legend thoufh. Also, great video

My fave Ozzy era Sabbath song. Speaking of bassy sound, Tony's guitar is tuned down to like C+, due to the accident he had, literally on his last day at the steel factory job he had, before going full time with the band. Imagine having your finger tips snipped off, having to play, so close to the bone, so he devised some feaux tips, trying out different things to find what worked, down tuning helped, making the strings looser. In the Dio years I think Tony's playing improved. Heaven and Hell is a must hear, if you haven't heard it yet. I feel the driving groove of this song is something Iron Maiden picked up on, and ran with. /,,/ !
You definitely need to check out more Sabbath. These guys were the foundation of metal 🤟

That's the greatest thing about Ozzie is that every song you heard you could make out the words to each song. I grew up in the 70s and listen to Black Sabbath. They totally blew everybody's Minds! He moved on in the 80s and it was just as easy with guitarist Randy Rhoads. Totally awesome guitarist but died at a young age rest in peace Randy Rhoads
I'm listening to music over 60 years, no real fan of headbanger music but I really dug this and Iron Man by them. Awesome guitar playing also! You may enjoy Mississippi Queen by Mountain in 70. Legendary guitar player Leslie West really playing a mean guitar. May have been the lead singer also. Terrific! Best of luck on yr channel

You are young so you did NOT grow up with this music. I saw them back in the 1970's. DAMN what a great show!!!! It was like listening to an album. The show was non-stop. End one song and launch right into the next one. Bill Ward the drummer never stopped until the end of the show!!! Later beautiful..... Thanks

Regarding the accents you mentioned, Iron Maiden are from London and have more of the stereotypical "English" accent... not polished, but familiar. Sabbath are from Birmingham in the north of England and the Brummie accent is very distinctive. You can also hear it in interviews with members of Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and especially Barney from Napalm Death, all influential bands from that city.

Fun fact. When Tony Lommi was working in a Birmingham factory, he lost the tips of all his playing fingers, and was told he would never play the Guitar again. Hence the heavy stumming and why so many people find it hard to play the cords he does

With every other band everyone follows the drums, but with sabbath it’s a circle, ozzy follows Tony, Tony follows Geezer, and Geezer follows Bill, but bill follows Ozzy.
If you want to hear some great instrumental from Sabbath, You need to hear "The warning" It's an amazingly groovy long song with only a few lines of singing. I think that would be exactly what you're looking for....Also, you should check out some later Sabbath with Ronny James Dio on vocals. "Heaven and Hell" "Sign of the southern cross" Children of the sea" would all be great selections. Dio is one of the greatest vocalists of all time, in any genre...That's an undisputed fact!
100% classic. Needless to say Ozzy has changed a tad since this was recorded but the man remains a legend. Even back in the 70s you rarely heard Black Sabbath on the radio here in Australia and most of the 'pop' music shows tended to concentrate on more mainstream stuff. The band's name had something to do with it of course as the media outlets of the day didn't want to offend their largely Christian audience. 'Easy Living' by Uriah Heep is another song from the early days of metal you're sure to love. Have an awesome weekend Aileen.

Btw this version of Paranoid is just the studio album playback over the live performance. Looks like a TV show performance or something, was very common to use playback instead of live audio on TV back in the day because it was so hard to get live audio to not sound like crap on TV.
Apparently Black Sabbath started as a blues band called Earth, and started getting heavier and louder because the audience were ignoring them! Maybe just a tale, but interesting all the same.

When I grew up there were 4 bands I would listen and play in a band all the time. Black Sabbath (my first band), Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. Later came AC-DC, Motorhead, Rainbow and bands like that. Would love a Uriah Heep reaction, early albums of course

Got out of it lucky, only got a speeding ticket, the cop that clocked me dropped my speed on the ticket just enough to avoid a wreckless driving charge
It was probably a good 20 25yrs ago maybe at the Ozzfest i saw Ozzy live. I went to the Ozzfest a few times and each time it was a Black Sabbath farewell tour. But it was incredible. Plus i got to see Pantera, System of a Down and Rob Zombie close out different shows over the years they did Ozzfest. And if you went to an Ozzfest you know there's a small side stage for newer or unknown bands. I saw Disturbed before they were big on the side stage. Great times!!!
Black Sabbath released quite a string of great albums through the 70's. They fired Ozzy around 1979 after Never Say Die. That's when Sabbath picked up Ronnie James Dio, and Ozzy picked up Randy Rhoads. In my opinion, this led to some of the greatest metal of all time. Black Sabbath released Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, and Live Evil with Dio, while Ozzy released Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman with Randy. Randomly pick any song off any of these albums and I think you'd be blown away.

Geezer Butler was a fantastic songwriter as well as a driving bass player, Bill Wards drums were always on point with little jazz fills giving a change of pace, Ozzy was at his height when this was recorded IMO, Tony Iommi just plays fast riffs to finish the song so well. Of all the songs by Black Sabbath the ones to listen to are Black Sabbath, Iron Man and War Pigs the evil trio that really moved from heavy rock to Metal

Ozzy played at the closing ceremony of last years Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, in the rehearsal the secret was revealed and Ozzy was there (rumours were doing the rounds). Everyone cheered and were shouting his name, Ozzy's response was "you lot can all fu*k off!". Legend.

Back in the 80s I was lucky enough to see Ozzy with Black Sabbath. Then I saw him on his own when he came out with Crazy Train. Then not long after that Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio. All this within the span of 2 years. Will not forget.

Black Sabbath is probably my favorite band of all time nice to slayer, and my personal opinion into the void is probably the best song.
This is different I never seen Tony on the right of the drums gezzer on the left. If you pay attention to Tony's fingers you see he has leather caps on the tips of his fingers that he lost in a factory accident. He is one of the guitarist that inspired me to play.
The hair styles back then.... classic!

Ozzy has a legendary history of drink n drugs exploits & this affected his speech later on in his life… Bands like Black Sabbath came from the Birmingham (Brummies) area of England…. They’re legends 🖤
