It's a stunning guitar! I wouldn't mind having a dual P-90 version myself. It reminds me a lot of my Mainebuilt Thinline T-style. Just a tone machine!

So funny you are making this video because I literally watched through several of your videos one day searching for this guitar, and when I finally found it in a video I had to find the exact right moment to pause where you could see the "Wide Sky" name on the headstock! lol

In the H/P90 configuration, the Wide Sky sounds ideal for blues.
The 335, and ones like that, are 3 layers, glued and put in a press. Gibson has used the same 335 press since day !.! This Wide Sky is a carved maple top. 1 piece, usually hand carved! He did an awesome job on it! The violin carve came out perfect! I built one ~10 years ago. Thickness calipers, thumb planes, scrapers, scarps, all by hand. I could do about 2 hours, then I had to put it down! It took me 6 months, star - finish, to build it, a little at a time. My highest respects to the builder!! Peace --gary
Well Gibson sold all the equipment they used in Michigan when they moved to Nashville for production. Those are now in use by Heritage guitars.
@@SSquirrel1976 I beg to differ. I'm 72, and I lived through it, and heard many accounts of it for years! When they closed the plant at 225 Parsons Street in Kalamazoo Michigan, they moved semi-hollow production to Memphis and solid body production to Nashville. Some things they took, some they sold and some just left behind. They took the ES guitar "press" that makes ES guitars to Memphis, and in 2018 (I think it was?) when they closed Memphis and moved semi-hollow to Nashville, took the press to Nashville. The last time I saw it was in an Andertons video tour of Nashville about a month ago, Lee is amazed how old it is, and how it pressed every single ES guitar ever sold by Gibson. A couple other notables, Seymour Duncan bought the Leesona winding machine that wound every humbucker and P90 at 225 Parsons. They still use it today on some kinds of pups. 1 person bought the remainder of the "pre-1900 stock of mahogany" used to make all the 1950's solid body guitars", including the tri-five "1957, 1958, 1959 Bursts" that are so expensive and popular. He turned the wood into "kits" to build your own 59 burst!! There is a Normans Rare Guitars video featuring ~6 experts on that whole subject, it's amazing to hear that story! I have a set of Humbuckers designed to be the same as the 1959 burst ones, by Joe Bonamassa and Seymour, and wound by them on the Leesona machine. They made them for backups in case any of Joe's "real bursts" failed on the road. I hope you do some research (googling) here on RUclips and also on the web, all this info is easily verifiable. Patch is a sweet guy. I've had 3 of his guitars. Still have a P1 (acoustic parlor guitar) which is a very special guitar. I also had one of his juniors and a P125 that he built for me. What you say about them being dark is true because I could never adjust the pickups to get them right for me in either guitar. I didn't want to split the novak pickups from the guitars so i just sold them both, but they are well-built, comfortable, and insanely beautiful guitars.

Nice fiddle. Perhaps wire that HB in series/parallel instead of split. I don’t like splitting HB’s either and I find S/P wiring a necessity.

Reminds of a 68 mahogany thinline with PAFs I made for a friend. Except it had a maple rosewood neck stained darker to match the body and a walnut top. That was a beautiful guitar. Probably the best I have ever played. But similar to yours with the semi hollow mahogany. Like that setup better than a Spanish style semi / hollow body. Because it is solid wood, not plywood. Has more of a pure solid body nature, but it also has a lot of resonance and semi hollow body vibe going on. Yeah, I need to build another one. Like one of those things I was doing it for a friend, something I wouldn't do for myself, I fell in love with it instantly, but had to give it to her. 😢 A few weeks after I got it together. It is ok I'll build another someday. Get so involved with so many different guitars. It is like 4 builds away. Still trying to finish the ones I have started.
Anyone else think about Ron Burgundy and ‘leather and Rich Mahogany…’?
But that’s a nice, unique but familiar enough to get significant use… really does seem like a perfect guitar to set up for slide for sure.

These WS P125c guitars are awesome. Firebird pickups could be a match too.
They are good looking instruments! Kind of pricey, but it's what boutique guitars cost these days.
If you dig these, you should check out Retrograde Guitars who make somewhat of a similar vibe with amazing French Polish style finishes. A little more finished looking then the Wide Sky

Not knowing what a guitar model is, isn't being confused. If I see guitar that I don't recognize and asking "what brand is that?" isn't me being confused. It's just that I don't know it. It ISN'T being confused.
His website says that the PL1 is no longer in production, but see if you can convince him to make you one. They look amazing!

i really want a reckoner from him. they look like some weird guitar an 80s punk band would have used and i love it. unfortunately jazzmaster pickups arent really my thing but a single bridge p90 or something on one would be amazing.

Interesting that you compared the Attack/Envelope characteristics of the Wide Sky vs. Les Paul. Would you say that this is comparable to the difference between a Les Paul vs ES-335 style? It would make sense if it did, as the Chamber/Body Resonance might take a little longer to develop the notes, and dampen certain midrange or high frequencies as a result, especially with a Trapeze style bridge.

I wish Gibson would make a Semi Hollow Les Paul with no F-Holes. Would be interesting to hear a Les Paul that someone took off the top and completely chambered the mahogany and put the top back on

It's a wonderful guitar but one small criticism is that the control cavity plate on the back is way too large and perhaps shouldn't even be there seeing as though there are F holes.

It sounds like it looks.
What many people, probably many Luthiers even dont realize, is that many oil finishes contain polyurethane, including so called "Gun stock" oil, which is what most guitars with an oil finish are finished with. It acts more as a sealer against moisture and protects the wood from drying (works both ways), which BTW Nitrocellulose doesn't do as well, and why it's NOT a superior finish. MFG's mainly PT Gibson, used "superior" for marketing by which they mean it's really easy to work with for them, and takes less time in labor (more in drying) than poly. As for protecting the instrument nitro never cures and can crack or turn to goo... collects dirt that gets stuck in it...
The whole reason polyurethane and other finishes were developed is to protect cars (Steel and other stuff better). And no, it won't do jack shit to the "Tone" of the guitar, which if you believe it does (Belief isn't knowledge) than you will have to do so with before and afters, no other changes, with recorded waves for comparison, point out the frequency differences (Software can do that part better than any ones ears), as well as their amplitudes and significance as to human hearing at those levels. I bet no one can even show how metal strings can get wood tones from the wood, and then impart them to the pickups, or that magnetic pickups can detect sound directly from the wood!
Ever wonder why those who make such claims NEVER give you scientific data? You should demand it next time someone tells you something absurd like the Nut improves the tone of the whole guitar, or feeds you some "Superior tonewood" or other BS.
The finish I use is Osmo. It doesn't contain any urethane based ingredients but combines plant based oils and waxes. It is something I used for years on furniture and cabinet work. I use it mainly because I like the natural feel of the wood rather than like a plasticy feeling that gun stock oil or nitro have. Also a big point for me is that it is non toxic so easy to apply in my small shop. I've never made any claim it affects the tone.
@@wideskyguitarsNo accusation to you, but I've heard it too many times, and pointed it out because I can only anticipate someone starting that argument, and having nothing at all in the way of evidence to show "polyurethane kills the tone", or how nitrocellulose is superior.
Gun stock oil only feels plastiky if you layer it quite a few times, and I prefer it because it seals better, and doesn't need to be reapplied for a long time, and get no complaints of it feeling anything like a gloss finish, which looses the sticky feel by matting it with ~1600 sandpaper or steel wool. Many wood workers swear by their oils and just assume they don't have some polymer in them, when all they have to do is read the freaking can! Many oils polymerize all by themselves, even without additives, but it takes awfully long, and isn't as durable. After all it's what amber is.
Although you still shouldn't treat it as if it is non toxic, as some do with water based finishes, because they still have toxins in them, as many "Natural" substances are by nature, where natural is really just a marketing term to fool the uninformed, and meaningless (what isn't derived from nature?). Oil finishes are by far not as bad as solvent based products, and it's the solvents that are the worse part. Anything is toxic at high enough a quantity, even oxygen, water,... and the level of toxicity is based on how much it takes for humans to have ill effects. Poison, Venom... are completely different things and categorizations.
Other than that: Nice freaking work, I rarely get a stab at such nice woods because they sell out so quickly after being put up for sale it's ridiculous.
I have started looking at the price before going deep into reviews...$4800...bailled out after 30 seconds.
Thats the best finish I have ever seen for my taste, but I doubt I will ever have $4800 to throw down on a guitar.
