Stephen, the guitar player was my cousin. He started out as a drummer and was unbelievable! Effortless. He always dabbled on guitar but played a lot more when he went to music college. I’ve been playing guitar almost 30 years, and he used to blow me away with some of the chord progressions he came up with. Both lads so talented and taken from us way too soon. Thanks for doing this video. RIP ❤️
Dude Stephen's chords continue to blow my mind to this day. Trying to piece out what exactly he was playing by ear always gives me such a refreshing take on the instrument, and the way he incorporated those wonky chords and progressions into the genre is unparalleled. Seriously the dude was a genius. His spirit continues to live on through his art. So sorry for your loss and RIP to a beautiful soul.
Audun Laading (the Bassist) is actually the reason I picked up bass. I was having a quarter life crisis at the age of 23 and really wanted to pick up an instrument in my spare time. I was torn between bass and guitar. One the one hand I'm really attracted to the rhythm section of any song, but on the other I was under the (false) impression that guitar being able to do both melodies and rhythm was more expressive, but after seeing Audun play and how happy and expressive he could be even when playing a relatively simple rhythm, it just solidified my love for Bass guitar.
the bass, and rhythm section in general is the soul of the music. i always loved playing bass for that reason. the guitar and chord work in this song is incredible but it’s all held together by the bass melody
Picked up first guitar at 23, and picked up the bass at 24. Gonna be a life long learning journey but Audun’s joy and skill absolutely won me over. I never appreciate the bass until I not only heard but saw him play.
I love the one who requested this. Any more Her's would be so greatly appreciated by the community. If it has to be lives, She Needs Him, Harvey, Low Beam, Under Wraps, anything. This video is so good, thank you
I'm so grateful to have been able to see these guys before their accident. Funny story, on Thanksgiving eve 3 years ago two of my friends and I were arrested for trespassing in an abandoned mansion near my house. This song was the last thing we listened to before being locked up, so all through the night we kept singing 'Baby I've been there befoooore" in the holding cell. Our Thanksgiving dinner was white toast, some grey slop, and a cup of sugar water. As the night went on we just kept singing this song until we finally made bail the next day. Even now whenever I hear this it brings me right back to that night with my friends. Wild times. Thanks for making this video Michael!
This was the song that made me fall in love with their music, the song that made me want to pickup a guitar, and the first song that comes to mind when I remember them, RIP to these two talented and amazing artist, they def were gone way too soon, god bless their souls 🙏
same to both! I had already owned a guitar and was getting bored, but then this song really changed everything. I got excited to play and learn again, learning this song just helped me improve as a player overall
Thanks for reacting and showing the world a little slice of Her’s, Michael. I saw them live for the first and last time on March 5, 2019. Less than a week after my birthday, they were tragically killed. Although I was able to get a few photographs with them and have a few conversations pre and post-performance, they became my friends from that night onward. They were truly special, a musical marvel. My children and children’s children will listen to their voices and music for the remainder of my years. Long Live Her’s.
Dude, I’m in the military and was overseas around the time of their tour. I was taking a 2 week vacation and one week was going to Paris and the other week going to the states. Her’s was playing at a venue and so was TV Girl. I love both bands equally but I had been listening to TV Girl a bit longer so I decided to go see them. When I got back from my vacation I heard they had died the day after I was supposed to see them. I’m so upset I didn’t decide to go see them instead 🥺😔
I am always amazed by your genuine enthusiasm for what’s going on in the music as a Player this is a priceless value and reveals even more of the personalities of the musicians we all love, so sincere thank you for what you do! Can’t wait to binge watch as many of your videos all day thanks again
As a person who hates reaction videos, I have watched and enjoyed every second of this. As a devoted Her's fan, I felt so blessed that you were also infected with their laughter and fun while playing their music and obviously your expert comments made me look at the song differently.
When you know he wrote this song about his dead mom😞 the words in it hits different. “I bet their mom would let them know what I’m about to face, keep your mouth zipped son.” And also “I guess I knew this would happen to you, sad I did but I refuse to know the truth.” It’s like he knew his mom would die😞
This means so much 🙏 the community is small but stuff like this keeps these two brilliant musicians music alive. They were unbelievably talented and enjoyed what they did like no one else.
I discovered Her's this summer and I have been thinking of them everyday. Their music just hits in a way nothing has so far. It's just a part deep in my heart. I can't think about them without tearing up and thinking of them too much like I did rn just made me burst into tears. I have huge empathy problems but for some reason knowing they're dead just BREAKS me
This really touched me. I moved to California from the UK the year this song came out and singing it down my freeway commute is etched into my memory. I got to see them a few weeks before they passed away at a packed gig. It was strange experiencing the pride and joy of seeing a favourite band from home having the time of their lives in the states, only for them to be tragically taken weeks later. They clearly were best friends having fuckin tons of fun, and I hope their families can find solace in knowing how much joy they brought to the world. Thanks Tate for requesting, and thanks Michael for taking the time to honour these guys. I’m a longtime lurker picking up the bass and your enthusiasm for music and music theory is infectious. I hope you continue to foster this community for years to come. 🧡
They were great guys. We had a small group of our kids and their friends that wanted to go see them live in concert. But unfortunately, my son was unable to go because something came up. He was very disappointed because he absolutely loves them and their music. He had never seen them live and this was his opportunity to see them. So you can imagine how disappointed he was. His friends were able to go and when they were there the took a video of Ste and Audun personally saying hi to my son and how they were sorry he was unable to be there and that they hope to meet him soon. They were killed in the accident the following week. Needless to say he never got to meet them. But he makes great efforts to make videos of their songs kind of like you do. He showed me your video and we both enjoyed it. Thank you.... I never comment on social media but I felt compelled to do so this time.
What I find nice is that nobody flocked there music due to their passing, but rather had such a natural growth from people who came across and love there music. I only wish they were here to see the love they have
That is true. The number of comments we find that say "Just discovered their music only to find they'd passed". It's tragic but it says so much for their talent.
i rarely see the enthusiasm audun (bass player) had than most other bass players, i really enjoy watching them live because of him and i've always enjoyed the bass especially in dorothy and she needs him, rest well these two angels
Wow! The polarizing news of losing them, coupled with such an upbeat sound...vocal range and fantastic bass playing. I rejoice and mourn the loss and the lives of such great people
The chances of being merc'd by a bass player during a performance are low....but never zero😊; this is fantastic groove and vibe with STELLAR tones! Love the baritone-tenor vocal range on display as well. RIP & thanks for the musical blessing❤
I'm a guitar player but got asked to play bass for a really gnarly punk band that was a cross between Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Rage Against the Machine. I used to mosh with the crowd during some breakdowns and I absolutely cracked a kid over the head with my bass by accident. He was definitely bleeding but he was majorly stoked, definitely felt bad but it was awesome
This performance always makes me cry, specifically at the bridge. They look like they’re having so much fun, and I believe they deserved so much more from this world. And the world needed so much more from them. Tragic.
I honestly get sad watching this video, but this video sums them up perfectly, they loved what they did and i think that's all that matters in the end. Would be awesome if you watched a few other songs, like low beam, underwraps and harvey for example. These guys were amazing and talented.
Bro.. thanks for being so genuine. You’re a great dude, it’s so great that you did this. People definitely love their music, but also deeply care about their personalities, style, and transparency. It’s easy to fall in love with these guys, as you could see they just had great charisma. Anyways I won’t ramble anymore, but honestly man, THANK YOU. The boys are missed and you pointed out things about them I never knew they were doing. Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get another video for them sometime. Peace!
Love Hers. Only been listening to these guys for a few months, and its tragic to see them go. Love both their vibes. Thanks for breaking this down, its amazing how you can do it so easily.
Dude I’m in love with this video! Thank you for reviewing it live and breaking it down! I found out about this band two years ago and I fell in love with them. I love what you did at @7:50 incredible it blew my mind what you did. Love it. Love them R.I.P.

I wish I could have seen them play, but sometimes life doesn’t go the way we expect it. Rest easy Stephen, Audun, and Trevor.
Thank you for bringing this to alot more people, The two were absolutely fantastic people from what i hear very down to earth just loved music and i think that shows in what they did. I'm very angry at myself for just never knowing about them until hearing happened to them. I feel like i and the world was totally robbed from true talent, i have incredible memories attached to some of their songs, people places faces and it wouldn't be as special if i wasn't listening to their music. Don’t know what I was expecting when I clicked on this video but as an English person who loved this band and really mourned their death, I wasn’t expecting much. You absolutely nailed it, encapsulated everything that makes this song and this band great and clearly have an outstanding music/guitar IQ. Glad that you enjoyed it and appreciated them for how great they were ❤ subscribing now
Thank you for doing this video. One of my favourite bands to come out in last 10 years. I remember when they passed it was in Arizona on the way to California a few hours from my home. Some of the biggest vibes and groove out of these amazing creators. I was watching allot of they’re videos cuz I planned to see them but then heard the news. Appreciate you keeping they’re magic alive. Loved your video for a while and I honestly learned more from your videos then any other guitar teachers on line. Many thanks
Another late band that really moves me is "Viola Beach". They were so young and promising. Coldplay even honored them with a live performance of "Boy that sings".
I just discovered this duo .. what a sad tragedy. Great feel. Michael, dude ... you are an incredible musician. The speed you understand everything that is going on is mind blowing. You became one of my top musicians/streamers out there.
I enjoy seeing anything her’s related because they are still my favorite band. I had the privilege of seeing them at their last concert in az. Her’s forever.
I've been missing these guys so much lately. thank you for reacting to this vid, I appreciate it so much! watching you catch on to their sense of humor made me emotional because that is how they were all the time. again, thank you !!!
Michael, I initially subscribed to your channel and then later purchased a Lifetime Membership to Guitar Gate because as a beginner guitarist (at my one-year mark with my amazing instructor with whom I meet weekly via Zoom, and Guitar Gate is a wonderful supplement!) you are teaching me so much about guitar and music. But what adds so much immeasurable value and depth in all you do is your heart, Soul, and humanity that you allow us to see. It's there that the real connection to life and others can be found. Yes, music is a powerful and profound language through which we can connect to, well, everything; however, when such real decency and humanity is revealed through it...wow. Just...wow. Thank you for all you do, Good Sir. You are a genuine treasure. And from one Dad to another, I know your kids are blessed with a devoted and loving father. So happy for them, and for you.
Boomer thanks so much for this and your tremendous support. I sincerely appreciate it. I've said it before and I'll say it again: It's messages like this from people like you that remind me I'm doing the right thing with my life :)
Michael, I can’t thank you enough for your great reviews. Every time I look for new music inspiration I come to your channel and always find something new that just blows me away. RIP to the two talented individuals, it’s beyond a shame that their lives were cut short. So much talent... hope you have a great evening, a great Friday and a nice weekend Sir!
It really means a lot to us fans that you did this. Ever since I started listening to Her's I've been scouring youtube for analyses exactly of this nature of their music. The musical ingenuity, the humor, the charm all make Her's a legendary band, despite their short discography. If you wanna review a really wonky, catchy song of theirs I recommend If You Know What's Right.
It almost hurts watching you meet their music and how talented they both were - knowing that they’re not here anymore. This band means so much to me. ❤
Sometimes I think Micheal’s understanding of the composition is greater than the composers. I feel like he’s technically breaking down something that someone else wrote because it sounded cool, not because it was in Dorian. That’s what I live about music though, and micheal as well!
This song is literally the reason I am even holding a guitar right now. Thanks for the breakdown, it was great to see your genuine reaction to a great band having fun with their art.
Lovely video! Also thank you to reacting to Her's! Audun, the awesome bass player said that "What Once Was" was Stephen's magnum opus lol. Forever in our hearts.
PLEASE please do more of their songs maybe even just one video quickly going through a few of their others. I'm just getting back into writing music after a few years away and it's solely after being inspired again by finding their music and I would love to have a better understanding as to what went into their style. You're great at what you do and seeing you break down this song so well makes me very confident that your help would be tremendous in achieving some heavily Her's inspired newly written material by myself and many other artists that find your content. Rip Stephen & Audun.
They were so good! I’m so glad you did them! The bass absolutely did that on purpose and he did it key moments all the time!!! lol cool that you caught that and didn’t even know them! You are awesome Thanks again
I've watched their Paste studio performance so so many times and listening to your reaction on them was sort of like finding something new on something that I've already watched and listened to many many times. I would've never known about that part at 8:30 if you wouldn't have pointed it out and explained. Thank you so much for your intake and I'm happy you enjoyed this song!
Dude, thank you. I have seen a video of yours before and I liked the content. After seeing this video however, you have gained great respect from me. These guys had so much more to give and I appreciate you taking the time to remember them.
I just discovered this band and at 40 it has the feel of all of the post punk I grew up on. This song gets better every time I hear it and sparks the same emotion as all of the music that clearly influenced them. I’m feeling the killing moon, Leonard Cohen, peter Murphy, the damned with a sprinkle of artic monkeys.
Thank you for this video. as my all time favorite band since 2017, seeing their legacy being carried on like this brings me so much joy. The hole will never be filled in my heart, but as long as I know they are being remembered I can be at peace. I hope hearing their music brought you joy
Thank you for this. I really enjoyed you going through it for us. I am so heartbroken that I will never get to see them live. Such talented young men. It was fun to see you enjoying yourself breaking it down. They bring joy to everyone that listens.
I truly truly appreciate you doing this. They have gotten me thru some really rough patches in my life. For them to not get all the recognition for all the talent they held when they were on this earth for that short time hurts me deeply so when I see anyone expressing they’re opinions on them I can really truly say it touches me

Her’s forever.
great band great song, so sad of a story, will be remembered
Stephen, the guitar player was from my hometown, it's great to see you react to their music. Such a tragic loss 💕
Wow! Thank you for making this video. It is appreciated
I did the door for one of their shows about a year before they passed, real sweet people.
Absolutely loved this video. Love Hers, thanks for helping preserve their memory and music
Her's is my favorite band. I'm so sad but I listen to their music everyday. Oh what could have been.. We'll never forget
Please more!! I’m so fascinated by their theory
Yessss this is amazing!!! So glad this made the cut!!!
This song is literally the reason I am even holding a guitar right now. Thanks for the breakdown, it was great to see your genuine reaction to a great band having fun with their art.
Hi Michael. Their passing is so unfortunate. Their humor reminds me of Frank Zappa's "Does humor belong in music"? Much of the same spirit.
Thank you for making this! We really love Hers!
Now you HAVE to do one on "She needs him"!
They were so good! I’m so glad you did them! The bass absolutely did that on purpose and he did it key moments all the time!!! lol cool that you caught that and didn’t even know them! You are awesome
Thanks again
Legends! Thanks for showing them some love!
I've watched their Paste studio performance so so many times and listening to your reaction on them was sort of like finding something new on something that I've already watched and listened to many many times. I would've never known about that part at 8:30 if you wouldn't have pointed it out and explained. Thank you so much for your intake and I'm happy you enjoyed this song!
the bass player is just truly something else. sad that they had to go early. thanks for this video
Thanks for this. Great to see their music being spread out. They deserve it!
Absolutely beautiful soul on all three of these men.
Dude, thank you. I have seen a video of yours before and I liked the content. After seeing this video however, you have gained great respect from me. These guys had so much more to give and I appreciate you taking the time to remember them.
So happy you nailed this one. Those two are well loved by many across the world. RIP lads.
I come back to this video along with all the other live performances to reinvigorate my soul. It's bittersweet.
Thank you for this video. as my all time favorite band since 2017, seeing their legacy being carried on like this brings me so much joy. The hole will never be filled in my heart, but as long as I know they are being remembered I can be at peace. I hope hearing their music brought you joy
Thank you so much for making this video 🔥🔥 R.I.P her's🙏🏼
Miss them so much.
It’s so nice to see their name living on. Thank you
Thank you for this.
For them to not get all the recognition for all the talent they held when they were on this earth for that short time hurts me deeply so when I see anyone expressing they’re opinions on them I can really truly say it touches me
Her’s is one of my favorite bands. It broke my heart when I heard the news of their passing. Thanks for this video 🙏
I have watched alot of your tutorials..but this one made me cry. Thanks Michael.
So thankful for you and this video. Their genuine joy in that video is so bittersweet.
This is awesome. One of my favorite bands. I miss them so much. Please get into them. They were soooo good .
