What a tool. I'm Italian myself and although it may not be the traditional recipe, I most definitely get the need for something fresher, saltier or more acidic to keep things balanced. It's like south French street pizza with all those salty black olives, or egg baguettes in SE Asia with that celery-like veggie they use: sure it looks weird at first but once you taste it, you just know it makes sense.
"what the hell kind of question is that?!?" is the most american answer i can think of to that question. prior to this video i didnt know people ate pickles with pizza.

When i was in the ukraine i actually had pickles on a "sicilian style" pizza and it actually wasn't that bad. The way these korean girls are doing it though is shameful. And weird.

@Tony Li Well, you don't have to throw away the cheese per se, just put less of it on and add some spinach, mushrooms, onions, etc.
My first thought was that she was trying to say "it tastes like crap" nicely, but I believe she was referring to the potency of the Tomato flavor in the sauce. i.e. that it didn't taste like it was processed, filled with preservatives, loaded with salt, etc.

This video made me nostalgic. I had a Korean roommate in college, and in the final weeks before she graduated we ate SO much pizza because she was trying to get her fill before returning to Korea.
Tell her to try Pizza Hut! Pizza Hut in Korea was my go to. Always would get the classic pepperoni and it was absolute perfection

+Sal Hunter (Lordxsal) Well New York pizza is basically pizza from Naples and deep dish is a take on Sicilian. The closest thing to an American style is Chicago but the main difference being the cheese is underneath the sauce.

To be fair, the pizza they were eating at the time was a deep dish that has a lot more sauce. It probubly had a much more "tomato-y" taste to them then the other pizzas.

Well I mean you've got your veggie in the form of tomato sauce. You've got your grains in the form of dough. You have your dairy in the form of cheese. Depending on the toppings you will also have your meats and more veggies. So yeah a pizza diet is actually possible. Then again, pizza dough is made out of flour so you would still be missing your grains, plus all the salt and carbs. Yeah...pizza diet doesn't sound like a good idea.

As a new yorker, there is no such thing as new york pizza outside of new york. It either has to be singa's or it has to serve something called the grandma while in the city. Outside of the city doesnt even count. I've tried "New york pizza" a multitude of times outside of the city and it's always been cheeks. With all three in mind, Detroit pizza is my second favorite. I know it sounds bogus, but for some reason it also tastes better in new york.

It's kinda sad that they dont have high quality pizza there. IMO the crust and the sauce is the main part for me. If I cant taste tomatoes in the sauce, I already think its low quality. I will say they did a good job on getting that Chicago and Detroit style in Seoul.

I was born in NY, but I spent most of my life on the west coast. Unfortunately, I spend enough time vising my relatives in NJ that I know exactly what I'm missing.
As a native Michigander, seeing any video where Detroit style pizza gets its due is always good. It's really something else, a takeoff of deep-dish with its own unique history and tastes. Honestly the only thing I miss about living in the mitten.

1. Yes we really Heisenberged a pizza off of a roof (instead of onto) and yes we did clean it up!
2. The girls learned what "that's what she said" meant a few minutes before the shoot.
3. No American would say that NY pizza was salty. Koreans think most western food is too "salty." They could have very well caved in and Koreanized the flavors to suit the Korean palate, but they chose to keep it authentic.

And does it have to be restaurant food only? How about trying to cook traditional recipes from scratch? Like hotcakes, spoon bread, dirty rice or chicken casserole. (Especially if you can find a national to cook an authentic sample.)

For the homemade stuff, we need to find someone to cook it, hence why we really wanna do soul food, but there's no soul food restaurant. I'm in talks with a chef who I think could pull it off though.

For soul food - a non-exhaustive list would include: grits, mustard or collard greens, fried okra, fried catfish, fried chicken (fried anything really), green beans/ black beans/ black-eyed peas/ white beans cooked with bacon, sweet potato pie, biscuits 'n gravy. And LOTS of pie/cookie variations.
Also soul food includes a variant of barbecue - but you already covered that. ^_^

Not all pizzas are that greasy. Certainly every place I've tried in Chicago had Super-greasy pizza. A few places here in New York have greasy pizza, but never as bad as Chicago. I'm not familiar with Detroit pizza, so I can't comment on that.

The pickles on pizza thing isn’t so weird when I think about it. In Chicago some people eat pizza with Giardiniera, which is an Italian mix of pickled vegetables (mainly diced peppers and carrots) in oil. There’s mild and hot versions too and you can easily get it at Italian stores and a lot of times at normal grocery stores as well.
Olives are pickles (fermented and cured) and are a common pizza topping, too.

I've been trying to tell people about Detroit style for years since I live here, Thanks for putting this up. One thing to keep in mind about any of the pizza dough in the US is we take great efforts to develop a good flavor in it, its not just for holding the toppings.
I'll make sure to try some if I get there. And if you ever get to New Haven, CT; there is a lot of pride we take in our pizza here.

The deep dish pizza in Chicago is more of a tourist pizza. It is poplar in but the most popular is the tavern style pizza. It is the best I've ever had. I do like Detroit style when it is a little bit overcooked (you can order it that way), and NY style is always great as well.
If you go outside of Chicago and say "Chicago style pizza" everyone will think deep dish.

I've tried a "burger" pizza that had beef, pickles and tomatoes on it and honestly it SUCKED! Specifically because of the **shudder** pickles.

+Tienshansong Probably why they liked the Chicago pizza then, almost all pizza from here has a sweet sauce when it's that thick. Less garnishes than you would normally find on American pizza, but sweet sauce always, crust should be buttery not sweet though.

I can see how pickles and kimchi would make sense for a Korean pizza. It's the same concept if I was to put banana peppers on the pizza. They are mainly using pickles or kimchi for the vinegar content of those foods to break up or cut the oil/grease/fat from the pizza.

I just love the apocryphal origins of Detroit style pizza. The version I've heard most consistently revolves around autoworkers using industrial pans as pizza pans.
And, honestly, I can believe that factory workers have done that. Even as recently as a few months ago, we've tried using ovens at work to keep subs hot for break. (Not a bad idea on paper, but the bread texture ends up a bit off, and the flavors aren't far behind. Might work for an hour or two, not for half a shift.)
