The dogs you met on the mountain trail but also at the "Curmatura" (Saddleback) hut, are Carpathian Shepherds. It is a pure Romanian breed, like the Shepherd of Bucovina, another pure Romanian breed. They have been sheep guard dogs for centuries.

Wise decision to get out of town. My advice was and will always be the same for anybody visiting Romania if you truly want to see its beauty : stay out of the cities, go to the countryside. Visit monasteries, castles, mountain ranges, pass through little villages, just go to places where nature is the main thing and there are less people and less noise. The cities are great, but they're not what mostly makes Romania beautiful, it's the sense of purity and nature here, and that old, rustic vibe of simplicity and tranquility. The mountains are especially our pride and joy. Now, I'm a city boy, grew up in Brasov (which is also why I might be biased about the mountains) and lived only in cities, 3 of them, in 3 different regions of Romania, but I still think the countryside is something truly special here.

Glad you guys enjoyed the hike to "Curmatura" Cabin and there's so much more amazing things to explore in Piatra Craiului Montains (they translate something like "The Prince's Stone" Mountains) and also other Carpathian locations in Romania. Anyway, cool video, nice perspective of this hike , maybe you'll do some other hikes in the future. And to answer your question about that stick on the dogs leashes, among other reasons, one of them is that the dogs have that wooden stick on their leash is in case you're buried, or trapped, in snow following an avalanche, the dogs can safe you, if they find you in time, you can hold on to that stick and one or two dogs can pull you out of the snow. Cheers guys!

@@MoreTravelPlease The answer about wooden stick on dogs leash
is totally wrong. They are shepherd dogs, they protect the flock of sheep and sheepfold. Winter, sheepfold are not on the mountain, where are avalanches, it is in the plain and the dogs are there as well. The stick is called "jujeu" and allows the dog to walk fast but does not allow to run and catch the hunt (the stick will hurt their feet if they run).
This means that they do not leave the flock of sheep to go hunting and leave her unprotected and the wildlife is protected. In the modern days is against the law if the utilitarian shepherd dogs not wear "jujeu" (because Romania protects the wildlife). If you see dogs whit "jujeu" don't feed them! They have a special food and the shepherd is upset if he sees you. If you see the dogs, there is a flock of sheep around. You may have noticed that these dogs did not bark. But they bark if it's a danger. If you approach a sheepfold/flock of sheep and the dogs welcomes you with barks DO NOT go forward, go back calmly, and make a wide detour or wait for the shepherd to come to you or to whistle at dogs. The same dog that you handled and gave him food, will tear you to pieces if he sees you touch or harm a sheep or their master. They are very smart and fearless (they fight with the bear to the death - and Romania has the most bears 40% in Europe ).
P.S. I think LUPIN was a shepherd dog who lost his collar whit "jujeu" (if it smells like a sheep and not a dog it is for sure).

Ce viezure si-a bagat coada in comentariul vostru? Ala micu' ...?

Interacting with these dogs was not wise. They are working dogs, they are not pet.
The stick hanging by their collars is to inform the ranger that is a sheepdog and to stophim....
The Carpathian Sheepdogs provides protection for people encountered on the mountain trail.
The Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog is a dog used for centuries by Romanian shepherds in the Carpathians to guard herds, being an excellent guard dog.

Shepard dogs in the mountains should not be feed, I was with my grandfather & his friends... they told me that feeding the dogs is the responsibility of the owner/shepard, as the dogs will be more disciplined & listen better like that. Feeding them can ruin the bond/connection they have with the shepard, so you must not feed the dogs.
Edit: My grandfather told me that wolves used to be so big that they would run away with a calf in its mouth, so dogs need to be disciplined to protect or warn from wild dangerous animals.
