Excellent content as always John. I remember you briefly mentioning you’re taking guitar lessons. I’ve been playing most of my life. Best of luck with that!

Actual example of how the SEC playing one fewer conference game hurting the sport. Iowa State, BYU, and Colorado all had to play Kansas late in the season and lost which extremely narrowed their pathway to the playoffs. Illinois had to play Minnesota and lost which took them out of the playoffs convo altogether. PSU almost lost to Minnesota on the road as well.
Meanwhile, SEC teams were playing the likes of Mercer and UMass. Those are basically scheduled byes for most of the SEC teams. Not only does it help those at the top of the league, but those at the bottom reach 6 wins to get playoffs eligible. Right now, over the next 5 years alone, Big 12 has 40 scheduled conference losses and the B1G has 45 due to the extra game. That's 80 and 90 over a 10 year period.
And all losses aren't evenly distributed which is why the Big 12 gets called a parity league and B1G top heavy. Go look at Purdue's 2024 schedule and see how they were set up to eat losses for the league.

ACC & Big 12 need to make a trade to fix travel, then set up a scheduling agreement. ACC gets WVU, Cincy, UCF and Big 12 gets Cal, Stanford, SMU. The nerds in Northern California will just have to shut the hell up and take it.

As an Iowa State alum I'm not too worried about the Bears. Why wouldn't they hire Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn from a division rival you play twice a year?

John it stuck me when you said they have to pay more than ever to keep talent... On the other hand when do these kids realize staying and being developed is way more valuable. The transfer portal are full of kids with false information to me.Maybe not all but a good percentage?

It’s not more valuable though. You could get injured you could get replaced by better talent. Once you’re in the league you have hundreds of scouts always keeping an eye on you in case their team needs your position. It’s a whole different world. But if you’re not an athlete and just a fan you’ll never understand because all you care about is your college team doing well.

The SEC has scheduled like cowards for years. It is smart but cowardly scheduling. For a full decade of Nick Saban's dominance in the national limelight leading up to COVID, his teams played ZERO non-con road games. Of the 4 home non-con road games each year, they were almost all clearly easy teams. So, Alabama was basically given 4 wins per year.
Think about it: For a full decade, Alabama played 8 home games and only 4 road games (all in conference) per year. Totally wussy scheduling. But everybody says Saban is the best ever. I've never bought it. He hardly ever had to coach in an unfamiliar venue. He traveled only to SEC venues that he knew. That is massive.
The idea that the SEC is all that has been built on a house of cards. They aren't all that. They are a good league but they've avoided truly competing for decades. House of cards. Smoke and mirrors.
Is the SEC worse than other conference? No. I've never bought that they are that much better. They've just avoided tough competition outside of their conference and then had a couple of teams that beat up the rest of their league. That's been their recipe for success. It is smart ... but cowardly to schedule the way they do.
They SEC plays great football but they are SCHEDULING COWARDS and have been for a long, long time. The crazy thing is that this cowardice has been rewarded.
Imagine if the NFL allowed top teams to play 2/3 of their games at home? Of course, no one would think that is fair. For some reason, the SEC gets rewarded for total BS scheduling.

If the SEC teams played the same number of conference games as the Big 12 teams they would average closer to the same number of losses by quality teams and may not be seen quite as dominant especially as college football dynamics are changing…
