One of my cousins would leave his guitar in the garage and hardly ever changed the strings. They were rusted and I never quite understood why he let the strings get that bad, lol.
Very similar to the method I've been using on my Osiris, but a few interesting points to try on my next string change. I've been having tuning stability issues with mine lately, and even the high E has been UNWINDING at the ball over time for the last few changes, so I've called in to Kiesel and I'm working with them. Thanks!
16:00 Wow that's a much better technique to cut strings rather than have the pointy edges sticking out from trimming. I'll use that method next time I re-string, good tip.
Thanks, dude! I got a Kiesel HH2X last year and I thought it would be way easier to change its strings versus a headstock model. Turns out I was kinda right - there's a small learning period, and I definitely made the mistake of snipping too much string before the ball end was fully secured. But watching this made my most recent change way smoother!
Easier than regular tuners where you have to wind the string a certain way - yeah, I never really learned to do it properly. But locking tuners blow this system out of the water. They should have given more leeway at the top after the screw, this is especially relevant to the E strings. Always have the screws come out of the rear end - if you cut it too short it's so hard to get that top E string to reach the screw even if tehchnically the length is sufficient.
Thanks, just got my hands on a Vader last week, and after many hours playing I broke a string and quickly realized I had no idea how to restring the Hipshot... Cheers!
Great tips here. Been playing a fair amount of time but your tip to stretch the trying to tune it down a hair on its initial restring rather than using the machine screw...brilliant! More of these videos on Kissel maintenance tips would fun!
Nice “how-to!” I have my first (Kiesel) headless guitar currently on its way to me. Thought I’d better see about the string change process, and setting intonation. Your vid popped up. Nice and relaxed, and informative. Thx for posting it🙌🙏😁!
Hi Barry, congrats that’s awesome. What model did you get? Thanks for the kind words. One additional piece of info, actually don’t use the silver wrench that I used in this video (for the top locking nut part) there is a black wrench in the pack that you get with the guitar which is better for that 👍🏻
@@McRocklin thanks for the reply🙏… and wrench tip. I went with Tim Miller’s M6. I have decades worth of collecting Archtops, Teles, but never had a headless. I’m mostly concerned about how the neck will “feel.” The tuning sure seems stable, after watching your video. That’s encouraging😁🙌. Thx again!
I have a Kiesel headless and it sucks changing them. Trying to get the ball end into the bridge is a pain if the string keeps wanting to spin the ball end the wrong angle. And the first string I clamped down on the nut end ripped right thru the string. Then the next time I had it too loose. I have no clue why they made it so the clamp is sharp enough to slice the string like butter.
Thank you for this!! I own a Kiesel Vader and although I was forced to figure out how to restring it, your video definitely gave me some good tips to make life easier! I would love to see a video showing how you set up your hipshot for an aggressive float. I currently adjusted the spring screws in the back to give me a little pull room (1/2 step), however I am curious if I can get at least 1 step or more. Is it feasible to raise the bridge mounting screws and lower the string heights to give more clearance for pulling back on the trem?
I never thought I’d like headless guitars but I’m starting to actually dig them lol it seems to work like a floyd rose. I definitely dig the video and honestly you are like the face of the headless movement imo. It looks easy enough haha..
Hey McRockin, great tips, helped me get mine going much quicker. Question: what's the method you use if you need to remove all strings to do something like fretboard cleaning? Thanks!
Thomas, do you find it a pain to access the small Allen key for the trem bar on the antique ash Osiris? I really wish it were pop in like some I’ve used in the past. Thanks for the vid, cheers!
Thanks Thomas, great video. Can you tell us your set-up specs, amount of neck relief, string heights at 1st, 12th (or 24th) frets? You say your action is low, but you still get some good volume out of your guitars, without pinging out. So I'm really curious how you set all that.
This is really helping Me. I’m going to attempt to purchase Your Signature Zeus Guitar in Purple. But I would LOVE to have a light weight body like Swamp Ash. I had a dream about a Zeus guitar with the following features. Body Swamp Ash with a Figured Black Limba Top with a Figured Pale Moon Ebony Fretboard with Black Dots or Black Block Inlays with Your Fishman Pickups.
Ok, I didn't know these kept the ball intact. That looked incredibly easy, no being upset for not having the perfect wind at the headstock. I am sold on this...gonna be looking at Kiesels in the future. When you wind at the bottom, how does it deal with the extra slack when you are tightening? Does it go into the actual tuning thing or does it push it further down into the guitar?
Hey Mcrocklin!!! Just got my first Headless Delos with Trem and Not sure if im doing anything wrong but when I try to downtune I keep having a bit of problems with keeping it in tune. Do I have to keep something under the trem first or is it okay to just downtune like normal? There seems to be like no videos on this at all. Im happy I can play in standard all day but I love drop tuning.
Just like any guitar with a trem, it’ll need to be adjust when changing tuning. Come jump on www.mcrocklin.com/discord plenty of us on there for guitar gear chat/help.
As a generality, is it usually preferred to loosen/change one string at a time (like on floyds)? What if you wanted to oil the whole fretboard at once or wipe the frets? I have a Kiesel Vader 7 non-tremelo with ebony fretboard.
Do those NYXL rusts quick as the regular does? Because my hands get sweaty as I play for long hours. What do you think about the strings? I have yet to try them.
So can we take off all of the strings at the same time so the fretboard and frets can be cleaned? I was getting ready to change the strings on my headless Delos and wanted to make sure.
This was super helpful. How do we adjust the intonation, if ever needed? I google'd it but there doesn't seem to be much info out there. Can you share any tips on that?
I dunno I always have to tighten up these nut screws like crazy. When I didnt my strings like three of then slipped away so i tighten these screws as much as i can
There's double work going on in this video. Just pull the string taught above the headpiece without running it under the clamp screw. Cut it ONCE at the right length directly to the top corner of the headpiece, then run it under the clamp screw so it doesn't protrude outside of the headpiece. Tighten down, tune up. Don't shoot 1/4" pieces of guitar string across the room into your carpet, that will eventually end up in your shoe.
Well done! Just the right balance of helpful and technical specificity mixed with a little light humor throughout to keep the pace comfortably moving forward. Great video! Thank you, Thomas! :-)
Great video. I don't have a headless guitar although I may have to get one, and if I do if will be a kiesel. Probably the osiris I think. BTW. We here in the US call a condom a rubber . 🤣🤣, and what you used an eraser. 🤣.. I have to check out Keisels website and see what they have to offer. I love that guitar as well you use in this video. Again, thanks for sharing these videos and making my life less boring. 🤟🤣🤟
Ash body, pop burl top - purple cali first, 5pc neck, thin profile, 20' radius, Fishman Fluence pickups. Kiesel have all my guitars on file though, so you can just ask them for the spec.
Ooooops - I used the Type-X for this video haha. That's an ebony board, with roasted maple neck, flamed maple top on a ash body. I think the colour is purple select drink or something.
I've always been mystified at how the tuning works on these headless guitars. Interesting to see how simple and effective it is. I think I still prefer the Evertune system over this, but neat to see nonetheless.
