And I have constant thought engraved in my mind from my father that I’m perfectly fine and functional, however I know a cane would help me with joint pain and daily dizzy spells. I too faced that impostor syndrome "Am I disabled enough?" I live with fibromyalgia and it's been a part of my life for 16 years. My mobility has declined to a point where I need a walker some days, a cane on others depending on flare ups. I also had to "come out" as disabled, which was hard. I'm in physical therapy for balance impairments.

    • @ElinorBrown
      @ElinorBrown  3 года назад +10

      That imposter feeling is definitely tough! Do you find a walking better than a cane? I imagine it’s better for stability but more difficult to manoeuvre? 💜 hope you’re feeling ok today 💕

    • @headbanger1853
      @headbanger1853 3 года назад +5

      @@ElinorBrown A walker is much easier than a cane, but not for narrow spaces. Some models fold down the middle to get through tight spaces. My physical therapist recommended that I use my walking since my balance impairments are significant. I can walk much farther with a walker, with less pain and fatigue especially when I get a dizzy spell. But I'm feeling ok, thanks. I hope your cane helps you. There is no shame in using something that helps you get around.

    • @headbanger1853
      @headbanger1853 3 года назад +5

      @@ElinorBrown Also some people face internalized ableism which is why they refuse to use a cane. Using a cane is so much better than falling. I don't recommend being stubborn. Using a cane should never be considered "being weak" or "giving in" to a condition that's not your fault; it's a tool to restore your freedom and maintain independence. Ignore ableist jerks who make comments. I personally don't give a hamster's fart about people saying I'm too young for fibromyalgia and mobility aids.

    I'm so glad you have found a mobility aid that you are comfortable with and that is pretty too. Seriously, it's gorgeous! It must be so great!
    Just a reflection of mine regarding the old woman you described, who stared at you. It has been my experience, that some older people (who may or may not be struggling with health issues of their own) don't consider the possibility that there actually are young people who struggle with their health, and especially if you have an invisible illness. I remember sitting down on a bus once, and two older women sat down on the seat opposite to mine (their seat was one of those seats that are big for one person but can be small if you're two sitting on it). They went on and on, talking to each other, about how young people these days don't offer their seats to the elderly, clearly meaning that I should have gave up my seat for them. Maybe I should have said something, but that day I was utterly exhausted and out of breath. Also, I didn't want to get into my chronic illness right in the middle of a moving bus, with a lot of people on in, and explain to them how I actually needed to sit, and that not all is as it seems.

    • @ElinorBrown
      @ElinorBrown  2 года назад +2

      So true!! some elderly people definitely think they have a monopoly on health issues, and unfortunately for us it's not the case. People question me a lot less with the stick than without it though!! especially sitting in disabled seats on public transport!

    23 year old former college athlete, still look relatively athletic lol and have severe chronic back pain. Have done multiple rounds of injections and burning nerves, got a temporary disability placard that I mostly use just for school so I don't have to walk a mile after standing on a shuttle for 30+ minutes. People would not even believe the looks you get parking in a handicap spot looking like a college athlete. Have been thinking of getting a cane mostly to lean on when standing for more than 10 minutes at a time. Think I am going to get one but might take a WHILE to actually get the confidence to use it in public. Invisible pain/disability just as real as obvious ones.

    I'm considering getting a walking stick, I get quite bad leg pain and I'm unstable on my feet, I've had it for about 7 or 8 years now. I'd have to go to the doctor first but my biggest issue would be using it at school. I'm not scared of bullies or any of that, I'm worried because my school is quite a strict school and I fear their reaction to me having a walking stick, I know that my Form teacher would be supportive but not most my other teachers might judge.

      Your school should not stop you using a mobility aid! I relate so much, the reasons I didn't get any mobility aids earlier when I needed it and ended up becoming bedbounded as there was too much exertion without support(had human support, but that's nowhere enough, it's like no one can carry me on their backs everyday everywhere. It was advised that I should get some cuz I have an extremely complicated medical history, physically and mentally. Then quite a little while ago, friends and family said just stop being so stubborn and just stop trying to act tough(they know I've been like that all my life, I don't want to be preserved as weak, hence anxious about stares and judgement), get at least a walking stick. I was already crawling instead of walking at that point, and even that I could barely get out of the room, I could get up and walk for a bit with rails and walls and human assistance. It's not like I'm not aware of the severity of my health, I knew before they did that I need to get aids, because they didn't find out until I couldn't hide it anymore(it's kinda obvious when u fall asleep a lot in random places and constantly faint and fall, covered in bruises and scrapes haha).
    It was a big step for me to start accepting that I need help, and put on a badge, sunflower ones, though people always assume they are mask exemption cards, I have one for just ASD originally, then decided to also be open with all of my illnesses and difficulties, so now I have a "I have multiple hidden disabilities" one. I was taking it off a lot when I was using the autism one, but I got the concessionary bus pass while I was planning on getting the current card, which it would be difficult for me if I didn't wear it with me, so I just attached the current card to the lanyard holding the concessionary pass.
    I was looking at folding walking sticks at first cuz I can hide that in my bag, and only use it when people are not around, I can't find any that I like, nor do any of them have almost perfect reviews(I'm picky). Then as I already heard about Neo-walk, and while I was researching about how to not be embarrassed using a mobility aid as a young adult, I'm 20 now, the clearly noticeable symptoms started mildly at 14, and neo-walk has been mentioned again, so I looked it up, I also fell in love with it, it just makes it look like it's a decorative accessory with my belongings, rather than clearly being a walking stick used by a person that doesn't look disabled, bruh, blue badge only shuts their mouth, not their brains. So eventho I can't hide it, I definitely am going for it, no maybe, no other "competitors", just this.
    So here I am, searching videos about Neo-walk, I am so happy to see that someone is explaining almost exactly how I feel while I struggle to express myself(I'm not happy about disability itself but the experiences being shared and I can relate so much).
    I'm saving up for Neo-walk, struggling to afford food, eventho I only eat a small meal a day, occasionally 2, so altho I can't afford other stuff like electric wheelchairs and scooters, I will eventually be able to get a Neo-walk.

    I’m soon to be 41 and I’ve struggled since 2019 to walk unaided, to the point I just don’t go out anymore now, unless absolutely necessary. The fear of what other people think + how they may judge me has put me off being seen in public with a walking aid.
    I bought a fold-up stick in 2020 and tried it a few times in the shops but the looks + sniggers would get to me.
    I don’t think it helps that I’m carrying some extra weight due to reduced mobility, and in my head I think “people must just think I’m using this stick because I’m fat”.
    So much stigma that comes with it, but I think I need to suck it up and get a nice one ordered (like yours), and stop caring what other people may or may not be thinking. You also hit the nail on the head when you said how when you’ve been able bodied and then developed chronic conditions/diseases that you still think of yourself as able bodied, that’s so true! In my head I feel well, strong, healthy, but my body tells a different story + I can’t keep fighting it.

    At 39 I am looking at getting a walking stick. I got diagnosed with early onset osteoarthritis in both hips, bursitis in my left thigh and arthritis in my lower back. I have been using one of my hiking poles for over 4 months now which has been helping a great deal. I am due to fly out to Kos in October and know that my walking pole wouldn’t be allowed in hand luggage. I don’t want a walking stick that looks like nhs style or old person spec. I have looked at the Neo Walk Walking Sticks and the variety of colours and choices is amazing. I’m toying with the idea of getting one in mango tango, with a Saphire Blue or Purple Velvet Right Handed Ergonomic Handle with a Berri Purple Rubber Tip. I must admit it is taking a lot to get used to the fact I have these conditions that have an impact on my daily life alongside mental health issues to. I’m hoping the new Walking Stick will give me a boost in confidence when I’m out and about.

    I'm debating getting a stick, never even really considered myself disabled(let alone disabled "enough")even though I have loose ligament syndrome and poorly formed knee joints that definitely impede my ability to do things(and only just learned that Ehlers danlos syndrome runs in the family), and a lot of what you were saying is stuff I'm going through now.
    I was told that I'd need a cane starting in my late 20s or early 30s, but I'm only 18 now and had two separate knee issues two days in a row. Before I was able to not exactly accept but handle that I'd need a walking aid in a decade or more, but now facing that I'm going to be entering college, my 20s and basically adulthood with an aid has been incredibly jarring.
    I really appreciate videos like these, helps to remind me that I'm not the only one going through something like this

    I have inflammatory arthritis and my pain is getting bad enough I've been considering getting a mobility aid. I'm only 25 so at times I feel like I don't "deserve" it and I should just "tough it out" because I'm young. Then I remember that 1) it's not my fault I have an autoimmune disease and 2) it's more important to take care of myself and I deserve to be comfortable no matter what other people think.

      @@that_silly_ginger Hi Amber! I'm really sorry to hear that you may have MS. But luckily, there are many treatments available and coming in the near future, which greatly prevent progression of the disease! As for me, I never ended up getting a cane as the symptoms gradually left and I don't really experience them as much anymore. Though, after developing a lesion in my cerebellum last September, I still get some vertigo/lightheadness when I'm really tired or stressed. It's an odd disease, but i have hope for the future. I hope it all goes well for you, take care xx

I noticed that since I got the walker I don't get as winded when walking and my muscles don't ache as much cause I'm not having to carry a the things I used to have to carry. Took me 5 years to get a cane more out of embarrassment than anything. I decided that I would get a cheap but and that way I would be excited to use it, if it didn't work I wouldn't have spent a fortune, and I wouldn't have the 'it's too much of a hassle' excuse that I would if I couldn't just shove it in my bag when I don't/can't use it. Absolutely changed my life and I want to buy an even cuter one eventually bc if I have to be the 23yr old with a cane I'm gonna make them envy me for carrying such a cute fashion accessory.
    If you have anxiety about getting a cane at a young age I'll tell you something. Most people flat out refuse to mention it. They don't want to look at it or talk about it or anything bc they don't want to offend you and I have only met one person who asked about why I needed it. Rude kids will sometimes ask 'what's wrong with you' and my response has always been 'that's not a nice way to ask that. Can you instead say 'why do you need a cane'? Get one that you actually think is cute and pretend that it's a fashion choice, most people won't even mention it!

    I don't really have a chronic illness I think, I have a slight thingy that my growing gaps in my knees are too big (This apparently grows together when I'm fully grown, I haven't noticed it getting better tho) so my knees just randomly hurt. I'm 16 in a few weeks and even though it hurts and it's uncomfortable when they hurt, much of the time they don't hurt and I'm fine. I really don't know if I should get a cane, especially since I am constantly told that I am fine and healthy??

      That can be tricky and I'm sure super annoying!! I would say that if you think a cane might help sometimes but not others maybe try finding a really cheap one second hand and just use it was you need it, and then if it gets better then you could get rid of it if you wanted to. I would try not to get bogged down in the question of whether you have a chronic illness at the moment, you don't need to have one to use a mobility aid. (Whether you use a mobility aid is how you feel not what others say about you!! It's not at all like medication you don't need permission from the medical profession to use it.) Hope this helps 💜

      @@ElinorBrown Yeah, I've thought about that too! I'll try that soon with the premise "it looks cool" and "it's for cosplay"! Thanks!
