How to Do German Short Rows Instead of Wrap & Turn

    While my description of how to create the “double stitch” in the video above is correct, instructions for how to substitute German Short Rows for regular short rows in your pattern are incorrect.
    Correct method: On each row, work one extra stitch than the pattern indicates before turning, slipping the stitch, and creating the double stitch.
    If your pattern says “K40, W&T, P22, W&T, continue working back and forth, working until one stitch before the wrap and turn, W&T,” you would substitute GSR (German Short Rows) as follows: “K41, turn, slip, create double stitch, P23, turn, slip, create double stitch, work up to next double stitch, turn, slip, create double stitch.”
    Finding the "wrap" of a "wrap and turn" is hard on your eyes. Substitute German short rows for regular and avoid the wrap and turn.

    By far the best example! All the yarn company examples still went over my head. You made this very easy to follow!

    They are brilliant. This was so helpful. I’ve done them before but, your description of how to use them in patterns where they call for wrap & turn makes it very clear.

    Shared this with a knitting friend, who had a pattern with wrap and turn. She didn't like it, couldn't always find the wrap. I have used German short rows for years. I could never find the wrap with turn and wrap either. Now I can take a turn and wrap pattern and use German shorts row. Love this video. Thank you

    Just found your site and love your technique for German short rows. I'm working on a Christmas stocking that calls for W&T. Will do this instead. Thank you!!!!

    I wish I had found this before I had messed up my sock for the 4th time trying to pick up these god forsaken w&t stitches. Why anyone would recommend them for fingering weight yarn is infuriating 😭 Bless you for making this video. Seriously 🙏 ❤

    Great video! You addressed an issue that I had never seen before. My pattern indicates up to the last stitch it doesn't say up to AND including. Now I know. Thanks so much for a clear and concise video!

    @ KnitFreedom - Liat Gat: would I use this same approach for replacing w&t short rows in a sweater pattern? You made this so clear and you knit continental like me so I can see clearly what's going on. I can't even comprehend american style because I'm a crocheter and my right hand revolts at holding anything but a hook or a needle. 😅

    • @Knitfreedom
      @Knitfreedom  3 месяца назад

      Hi there, yes!! You can use this to replace ANY short rows. Just refer to the notes below the video because I did change some specific and important information regarding stitch count. Cheers!

    I love this it's so clear! But i have a question, you say with the purls that the two legged slipped stitch counts as the first purl for counting. Is it the same when you're coming back the other way with knitting? So if instead of "knit to the last stitch before the wrap" it said "knit 30" i would count the two legged stitch as #1, and then knit 29 more stitches before i turned?

    • @Knitfreedom
      @Knitfreedom  5 месяцев назад

      Actually it's one stitch different the OTHER way. If your pattern says K30, you knit 31 then turn. See my notes above in the video description for an example.
