It's Ape-ril at Cinemassacre Video. "All Ape Movies, All April Long!!" James and Justin sit down (in different stores) to review Dunston Checks In. Which is a 1996 family comedy where Robert Grant (Jason Alexander) is the concierge of the elegant Majestic Hotel. With inspectors due for a surprise visit, the Majestic's owner, Mrs. Dubrow (Faye Dunaway), puts extra pressure on Robert to keep the establishment running flawlessly. Robert, hoping to be rewarded with some time off of work to relax with his sons (Eric Lloyd, Graham Sack), vows to put the utmost care into his duties -- a task that's complicated by one guest's unruly, light-fingered orangutan, Dunston.
It's "Ape-ril" all April at Cinemassacre Video!!!

Why not review the jungle book 1994? That has monkeys in it
seeing how it's actually not a shitty mobile game, I might actually check it out! thanks for advertising something we can actually enjoy james!
Harry and the Hendersons clearly
I prefer the darker themed sequel: Dunston Checks Out
I like the horror spin off, Dunston Dies Again
I prefer the E! Special, Dunston Comes Out
@@FIXTREME it was alright, but compared to the prequel series "Better Sign Dunston: Filthy Hands", it sucked
Dunston cums in.
Apotheosis retirement: "Dunstin phones it in".
Man, I thought this episode will feature George Costanza and Pee-wee discussing the movie with James.
187Streak I thought it would be both Jason Alexander And Paul Rebuns (Peewee Herman)
Its hilarious that they used costanza in the title
Lmao, I though the same thing.
Same.
@@tombstonejones9581 lol Exactly!! Well...I was pretty surprised when McCauley Culkin showed up at James house tho
In the sequel, Dunston tears her face right off, and gets shot in the parking lot.
dustin checks out
It was bit intense but it makes a lot of sense when you listen to the directors commentary
I'd give my life savings to fund this! unfortunately that equates to around £3.00.
HOLY SHIT😂😂😂😂. How extreme
Yes the fatalities are great in the sequel; Dunston Kills Everyone
I probably watched this movie 200 times as a kid. SO good at that age. Drove my parents crazy
Felipe Solis pretty much
Same. I still have the tape somewhere too.
Definitely watched it my fair share of times lol
I remember watching this movie three times in a row on a Sunday.
I've got my son watching it. Yes, still on VHS for me.
I've never wanted to not play something as much as I don't want to play skyforge.
lol
😂

Lmao they’re like I can’t recall any cursing ? Then show Jason Alexander screaming HOLY SHIT Hahahahah
That was edited in later after they filmed their talking segments
Before peewee's fall? No that was his climax
This was definitely way after Peewees downfall. I remember being blown away by seeing him as someone else and thinking it was a shame he had to abandon his amazing alter ego
Kevin R. You’re right at least two or threes after
Ayyyye I see what you did there.
being born in 1990, this movie was a national treasure growing up.
1993 baby and I agree!
@@demi-fiendoftime3825 100% Agreed!
Born in 1990 and have literally never heard of this movie before.
@@josh-oo You're missing out...
And then I made the mistake of watching it again when I grew up.
Speaking of Tim Burton, your theme for September is "Sep-Tim Burton."
Brent Granger hahahahaha, get out!
Also speaking of Tim Burton, I loved how one of the actors from Beetlejuice (cannot remember his name, he was the one who read from the Rules for the Dead book towards the end, allowing Lydia to summon Beetlejuice) was in this movie and kept getting messed with by Dunston.
What if for September they do will smith movies and have it be called Smith showdown (or Smith-tember) like cage match they had back in January.
Might as well call it Depp-tember
@@patrickwhatsittoyou8059 R.I.P. Glenn Shaddix, that fabulous mf✞ Beetlejuice was one of my VHS faves, Harry Belafonte can always tear it up, and Winona Ryder is still a darling joy
I like how they're communicating using an old tele... Reminds me of the good ol' days in the 80s when it never happened...
@@Dielawn69 It's funny how a lot of old sci fi flicks almost got modern technology right. Like, the basic concepts were there but they always kind of assumed phones still had like wires and shit and flatscreens would never exist.
I like that one shot from Demolition Man iirc; in which the modern tv is watching like 25 shows at the same time... never quite happened but kinda similar to how we use computers with multiple tabs except we still usually watch one at a time
@@JamesChessman They were taking the whole "picture in picture" feature that some TVs had back then, to its logical conclusion.
It's a CRT monitor with one of those crappy webcams you put on top of it stuck with an adhesive tape that only worked for 2 weeks
@@joshjames582 I think there's always a "unexpectancy factor" that is always left out, like we can imagine a flying car, but we won't imagine the hoover technology behind it...it's like a 1/2 Prediction
I watched this movie every single time I went to my Grandparent's house. Loved that VHS drawer under the TV in the den!
Me except I rented Air Bud Golden Receiver from the video store
same!! best movie at the grandparents house for sure!!
Can't believe you reviewed this movie!! One of my faves as a kid. I have the dvd i still watch it. Often.
I remember Barbados being mentioned like 200 times in this movie.
This is one of my guilty pleasures. Watched it a lot when I was a kid.
A movie with Jim Varney and Jim Carrey would be the coolest thing ever. Ernest goes to the zoo!
Both them and Paul Ruebens.
Jason Alexander is vastly underappreciated. Fun movie, but somewhat forgettable.
This movie is low-key legendary.
Can see it gaining a cult-following
@@alternity28 it was one of my favorite childhood films .
no lie seen this movie over 100x
They do explain why everyone thinks Rutledge is the critic. He was looking for Dunston in a laundry shoot or something. When the woman and George Costanza saw him on camera doing it, she automatically assumed he was the critic.
I watched this movie so much as a kid. Why'd I waste that time? I should've played Game Boy Color or drew pictures or something.
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid and I still do, it's the DVD case that I keep my favorite drug sniffing straw in. No one would ever look in Dunston Checks In LOL 😂
The movie played on repeat for about a year in my house during childhood.

Please do a rental review of “Clue”. Starring Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd among some of the cast, and a story written by John Landis, its a pretty darn good mystery movie, and a great adaptation of the classic board game. Perfect for you guys!
They have mentioned clue before. Not a whole re view idt
One of the most slept on comedies ever lol. The entire cast is gold. Especially tim curry and eileen brennan
@@jonathanredford215 Not to sound rude, but a lot of people mention Clue.
@@Goobian true enough. It has a following, but critics were and prob are still cold towards it
@@jonathanredford215 That is irrelevant
This film and the three ninjas were my fav as a kid. checked them out every few weeks from the video shop lol
I remember my parents rented this movie when it came to video and I really didn't want to see it because it just looked awful to me (I was on the cusp of becoming a teenager) but I really liked it and thought it was awesome!
George: Dunston!
Jerry: Well, it's probably the most intelligent ape there is.
As a kid and now, I love this movie, saw it on home video too!
The dog jumping off the building and Jason yelling HOLY SHIT was so funny
My fondest memory of this movie is that they used to play the trailer for it on my copy of the Power Rangers The Movie VHS. Lol, never actually got around to watching it.
Same!!! Except I did watch it, also on power rangers, I learned about croc for ps1 haha
12:43 Because of the scene with Paul Reubens saying it funny, I always remember the scientific name for Orangutan being Pongo pygmaeus.
Dunstan's true power was never accurately captured through this film
Dunston Checks In, lol! Wow the nostalgia hit me really hard here, we've had that one on VHS. But even after watching it nearly a hundred times, I dont remember anything about the plot or who was in it or a single thing that happened. The most memorable part was and is the title.
Could you also some time review Mouse Hunt? That was a classic when I was younger too
Same here with remembering very little of the plot, even though tbh this movie pops in my head every so often, being a bit of a favourite of mine at one point, and also stacked with a lot of great talent, given the frankly ludicrous subject. It's one of those movies that had a lot of physical comedy skit type scenes that didn't contribute much to moving the plot or action along, and I guess my brain just kinda filed most of that info away.
@@viscountrainbows6452 that's true, my mind does that too where it pieced story, characters and scenarios much differently when I was younger. Like I now remember the part with the dog jumping off the roof (it jogged my memory here) but how I remembered it: I didn't find it funny and I didn't think of it like "oh, the dog is now dead". My brain didn't see the dog dying or getting hurt, so according to my brain: that part never happened.
However, when I see it now, that is absolutely hilarious and ironic by how much information (our) younger brains misinterpret! It makes me curious as to what else I've missed while growing up.
Yes! That movie rocks!
Mouse Hunt is awesome. Still love that movie
May-cauly Culkin month!!!!
Yes please!!
oooh, that's clever! im hoping they could do that!
As Told By Kyianna thank you very much
Great idea lol. He can guest and cover the good son, pagemaster, getting even with dad, my girl, etc
Love your profile pic
I saw this movie in the cinemas, and vaguely remember it. The only scene that sticks is when Dunstan accidentally threw the frisbee out the window, and it hit the guy about to drink his tea.
Orangutan is indonesian language, in english mean:
Orang = man
Utan (hutan) = forest
Orangutan = Forest Man.
Pronunciation in English: "o runk ho ta an"
That's also where Bali is.
I’d like to see a rental review episode where they review another Jason Alexander movie, North. Also starring Elijah Wood, Bruce Willis, and Julia Louise Dreyfus.
I absolutely love the “group chat” setup with the old monitors!! Great video, y’all!
Shout out to Jason Alexander in The Burning lol
It really is a shame of how underrated Jason Alexander was as an actor because I agree he is good in everything he does. As a huge Star Trek Voyager fan, I can verify that he was damn good in that one too and he made it, in my opinion, one of the best episodes of the series.
The McDLT is the best sandwich that practices social distancing.
Lol
Got to keep that lettuce away from the meat bro!
I watched this when I was a kid, I remember enjoying it
I remember being fascinated with the opening of the movie
Of them just cleaning the hotel
Even at a young age
Jason Alexander is a great actor. He was perfect in Pretty Woman
Except for the out of place rape-y scene at the end. That seemed out of character to me, but they wanted Richard Gere to have a knight in shining armor scene.
that scene is actually great acting. Jason Alexander gets mad, and ultimately cries becuz he was losing his business partner and best friend to a hooker. The emotions are so raw and real. I remember thinking DAMN George!
Rathelm MC except it wasn’t at all
VHS Copy of Seinfeld, they never once setup the situation that he’d be a sexual deviant so it came out of nowhere. As far as I’m concerned it was bad writing.
He was good in shallow hall too
I'm going to be hugely pissed off if you guys don't do Every Which Way But Loose
@@cthulhupthagn5771 your guess would be wrong. Seeing how they are doing a whole month of apes and they have next week's pick... I meant the other weeks
Yo, don't forget "Project X” (1987) with the legend that is Mathew Broderick.
6:54 always got a laugh from me. Still does
I watched this movie dozens of times as a kid. I've always remembered it is a funny, family friendly film.
I still have this movie on VHS still to this day
Jason Alexander was recently on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast and talked about his career including this movie. He said that the orangutan that played Dunston was really gentle and it was a really great experience working with him. Unfortunately, this orangutan died young for his species due to some disease.
I loved this movie as a kid! I still have it on video 😂
I still want Dunston for a DLC pack in Kingdom Hearts 3 considering Dunston's a Fox movie and it's owned by Disney.
Imagine Dunston helping Sora and Goofy to find the keyblade.
TVBForever Thats a bit of a reach, I don’t see that ever happening
May as well throw in predator and alien as well.
@@bigkmoviesandgames Don't forget Gordy from Freddy Got Fingered.
@@theactualTVB of course.
How, exactly was Justin Silverman able to talk to The Angry Video Game Nerd via an old standard-definition TV?...
Rated PG-13: Maybe they're just saying curse words, like, maybe they say damn or shit or something like that. I don't think Dunston drops an f-bomb anywhere.
I love this movie, the funny this that the movie is rated G in Australia
The "mom died" trope comes from the fact that it's difficult to write good, meaningful female parts. It's much easier to just make them dead.
Last time I was this early 'James Nintendo Nerd' was a thing.
Frank Welker also voiced Bubba the cave duck (my favorite character) on DuckTales!!!!
And the Bigfoot in A Goofy Movie + Abu in Aladdin 😎
Shame Jason Alexander gets typecast like he does. He gives a high quality and memorable performance in literally everything he does. Shallow Hal for example. Or even Pretty Woman. Great actor.
Y'all are awesome. Thank you for making these reviews
This one have a great title in Portuguese: "O Hóspede quer Bananas", or "The guest want bananas" 🍌
You can call them orangutang, some other languages have the G, like in portugues, it's orangotango.
Reubens' porno theater non-scandal was in 1991. This movie was in 1995, AFTER the "fall." Get it right!
I think he was arrested for somthing even worse years later, not sure..
I posted this somewhere else in the thread but: Paul Reubens was arrested in 2002 under the charge of child pornography. That's what Justin is referring to. The case is more complicated than that, but is definitely something I imagine would give most people pause.
@@superdupermcgee That's lesser known and not "The Fall."
*"People complaining that it had curse words in it, which I don't re- even remember"*
*6:55*
Whenever Dunston is in the movie it is hilarious! Love this movie.
A sci fi world named Ayyleon? Really? More like ayy lmao who came up with that crap!
Its funny that Dunston is a girl orangutan. Boy orangutans don't look like that. Surprised they didn't mention that. COME ON TONY!
"The orangutans (also spelled orang-utan, orangutang, or orang-utang) are three extant species of great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia."
Y’all are very inconsistent with what qualifies as too much and not kid friendly in your films

Dunston was my boy growin up, watched this shit like everyday for a year
APERIL!!!
Should have done like The Legend of Boggy Creek for APEril
justin doesn’t know what the hell hes talking about
Jason Alexander is best as duckman
I totally forgot that I already saw this movie! It was an afternoon classic
I loved this movie so much as a kid. Even to the point of naming my cat Dunstin.
I loved this old movie!
1996 was definitely after 'the fall,' Justin. There was no mistaking that for us, I lived in Sarasota when all that shit went down. He's not Pee Wee in this movie because he couldn't be, but if it was before the fall, he wouldn't have done it at all probably. This is when he was just trying to get acting work.
I thought Costanza and Pee-wee would be guests in this.
Glenn Shadix was also the customer in the Chicken Hearts episode of Roseanne who couldn't make up his mind, he's Ray Cathode on the Space Mountain pre-show and voiced the Mayor in Nightmare Before Christmas.
4:08 - He also played Monsieur Mallah in Teen Titans... wow, that's three different ape centric roles, weird. I don't even remember Monsieur Mallah being in Teen Titans
11:56 - how dare you, Howie Mandel is Gizmo
Actually Jason Alexander look a lot like you, except he an older version of you.
Ape-gry Video Game Nerd.
I think Tony's wrong Paul Giamatti was the orangutan in the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes not Glen Shaddix
They both were, two separate orangutans.
@@lanceturley7745 I guess I never realized it

DUNSTON CHECKS IN
im having /tv/ flashbacks
Those are illegal

This a guilty pleasure for me...only for the reason I watched this in the theater when I was 12. Miss those days man. Adulting is not as fun as it seemed when I was a child..... Jason Alexander is the man in this movie lol.
You guys really pull the quarantine videos off majestically, all the editing involved made them look perfectly and nothing of the substance of the original videos is really lost
You guys forgot that there is a funny line in the movie where Jason Alexander said that his boss kicked Big Bird in the nuts. Which is funny seeing how the director of Dunston Checks In previously directed the best Sesame Street movie ever, “Follow That Bird” and I love and respect Sesame Street.
I think the movie showed the "evil" hotel boss watch security footage of Lord Rutledge looking through an air vent or something when he's trying to find Dunston. This was when she thought that Lord Rutledge was the critic.
This is a very enjoyable episode. Not too many people so less talking over each other. :)
Four people, and everyone queued up to pitch in often makes me pass, sadly....
My Fav Ape related movie is any which way you can and sequel any which way but loose
My Fav Ape related tv series, yes there is one! Is BJ Mckay and the Bear.
So what’s May going to be? AniMAYted films? Or maybe Michael MAYers?
Tony is the funniest dude that isn't the Nerd at Cinemassacre.
Used to watch all these animal type movies through the 90s into the early 2000s, guess I had nothing better to do, hah.
I would love a rental review of the 1997 film cube. The sequel sucks but the original is amazing in my opinion
What's the name of that Korean baseball movie with the gorilla baseball player?
Tony in a Pith Helmet talkin' chimps should be a segment during Ape-ril
Ain't this the plot of Ocean's 13? Except for the Ape which was replaced by an Asian guy.
