Left 4 Dead’s Lost Campaigns

- A look at Dam It and The River, Left 4 Dead's Lost Unreleased Campaigns that were made by Turtle Rock Studios. They potentially could've filled the gaps in Left 4 Dead's Story. These Campaigns would've shown what happened in between Dead Air/Blood Harvest, and Death Toll/Dead Air.
One of them was completely abondanded only for it to randomly leak on the internet, while the other one is more of a mystery (that I couldn't wait to crack).
Dam It footage is from the actual build of the cut campaign, and "Dam It Complete" which fills in the creative gaps of what the campaign could've been so keep that in mind. The original build of Dam It is really unfinished!
The High Rise Survival Map falls under a similar boat, of not being finished, but having multiple versions of it out there completed by fans.

Dude what... 10yr me would have their mind blown by this information, we definitely need a sequel. Gosh the story potential and the what-ifs are immense!
In an alternate timeline this could've been a DLC lineup or something, im with yea on that
Keep dreaming valve doesn't make games anymore
@@hunterhaon4265 BS
true LOL
Fun fact, Dam It has a L4d2 remake, Dam it 2, that sees it completed and it's a tough if fun campaign.
this campaign looked pretty cool and unique. too bad it wasnt finished
there's a community finished version, it's really good
@@elfasto2255 cap. the first maps are fine, but the finale is just terrible, and that really ruins it.
@@elfasto2255 oooo I’ll check that out and see how it plays
Yeah imo this map's finale is really rough. 2 hold out segments with a tank after, the 2nd one has the water hazard that can push you off the map while you are already trying to shoot the tank in a tight hallway with little room to move, and then a parish like running segment with yet another tank. Not a fan of this one. There was also pretty much zero item drops across entire levels, which was especially fun on expert. Its like crash course on steroids.
@@cheesenibbla8339
I think the difficulty should be fine for good players who clearly want a challenge. I'll need to check it out. Could be fun playing it whilst off a blinker
reminds me of the completely unknown (as in we have no idea how far along it was worked on or if assets relating to it exists) tie in dlc campaign with the movie cabin in the woods,
we only know it exists from an interview with l4d2s writer and the fact that multiple l4d2 enemies appear in essentially a crowd sequence with many monster designs.
valve would later actually follow through with a similar tie in project with portal 2s SUPER 8 playable teaser.
The Cabin in the Wood campaign didn't exist beyond the idea -- as confirmed by Chet. Nothing substantial was made.
@MattNF ah, its been a while since i listened to the interview, all i remembered about it was him confirming its existence, real shame we never got to see it, couldve opened to door to future campaigns possibly being licensed outside of the base game ones (though thats usually not valves MO for games)
I was expecting the video to be a plot summary of Dam It, i did not expect the other section on a suprisingly detailed deep dive about a completely new map I haven't heard of. Great video!
The Highrise survival map is really interesting to me because visually speaking it wouldn’t look out of place as a CoD4 map, almost looks like a mix of Vacant, Crash and Broadcast to me.
I was thinking it reminded me, visually at least, of a rainbow six or swat 4 map
the dude i know who talks about smash, also talks about my favorite game ever? This is nice. I’d like more left 4 dead content from this guy.
Bro you made whispers of winter? I love that map wow dude what a plot twist. You gotta talk about that in a video
It's really nice to see coverage of L4D1's two cut campaigns (and how they're tied to The Sacrifice) but I gotta be honest, this script is pretty confusing -- jumping rapidly between topics, repeating info, on-screen text dumps, etc. I already knew most of this info and I still got lost a few times.
I'd love to see more videos from you on cut content but I hope you'll slow down and organize your script a little more. You're basically teaching a class on a topic that most L4D fans know little about, which is cool and exciting -- but also not something you want to rush IMO. A lot of sentences here feel like they start in the middle instead of the beginning, so don't forget to establish context.
Best wishes on the next video! It's always a treat to see something more analytical in the L4D fandom.
Now somebody is gonna make a custom map for the river
yes please do a sequel to this!
Glad youre branching out with your content
I’m glad someone made a video on this, I’m always hearing about “dam it” but no one ever talks about it in depth
Great video. I love seeing the community of these games keeping the name alive and well, all these years later. Dropped a sub good sir
You knows a part of me thinks that the dam was suppose to blow up either intentionally or unintentionally from the survivors actions, considering it wouldn't make sense for the infected to stop chasing them when they're still on foot
something else i found out about the DAM campaigh, is that the ending is technically incorrect, in the old unfinished map and the ''comeplete'' version as mod, the survivors reach a military APC to escape, but in the REMASTERED version, i think, they instead walk down a set of stairs at the end of the dam, getting into a path that would lead them to the forest, and directly towards a campfire, that looks EXACLY like the start of blood harvest, giving a perfect continuation imo
While I agree with the continuity aspect of Dam It Remastered, I can't think of any reason why the Infected are still chasing the survivors to what is essentially the starting point of Blood Harvest, where everything is surprisingly calm at the beginning of the actual Blood Harvest campaign. In terms of playability, I find Dam It Complete to be a much more enjoyable campaign compared to the remastered version, where the ending is basically a Gauntlet event after opening the floodgates.
Ore-chard (orchard). Ore-kid (orchid) is a flower.
I'm telling you, the first time felt like an honest mistake while reading, the 15th time started feeling like something else.
I always loved the lore parts of the Left 4 Dead world. thanks for the vid and keep up the amazing work dude.
I’ve played both and the people who finished these campaigns made it really well for individual level
I hope whenever valve decides to update l4d2 again they could polish the dam it campaign to be released
I think they might update l4d2 for it's 20th anniversary as for this campaign it's highly doubtful they will add another campaign but hopefully I am wrong
Add it to L4D1 as well.
@@Spider-Shot5 well considering they updated it again after so long in 2020 I think it's a possibility.
@ultraexcalibur1728 yup
Hasn't it already been confirmed that Turtle Rock Studios worked on The Sacrifice? IIRC they used to list Left 4 Dead 2's DLC as one of their projects on their official website. I'm pretty sure we don't need to speculate about this one anymore, but take that with a grain of salt.
Also, what do you mean by Valve adding the docks in Dead Air later, after the river campaign was canceled? I'm pretty sure they've always been there. Was the river worked on before L4D1 released?
This is correct, TRS worked on the Sacrifice
I wouldn't be surprised if Dead Air's original layout was The Sacrifice's up to the greenhouse. The Sacrifice's finale using The Passing's port to prove the idea of the two gangs co-existing and crossing paths (or maybe a retcon considering The Sacrifice's's bridge is blocked).
This is awesome to hear get explained by someone who has an idea of whats going on!
im sure all l4d/2 players know about dam it! by now but i didnt know the history about "the river" campaign. i've always thought the sacrafice 1-2 were a totally different feel to the finale, it felt tacked on at the last minute (of course, to connect the story to l4d2). Valve and Turtle rock are pretty damn good at making the places in their maps feel "real". the reason i always had a hitch with the sacrafice transitioning form map 2 - 3 is that the oob geography around the saferoom changes A LOT between the two maps. nothing lines up which you can see pretty well in the first alley way after you exit the finale saferoom.
anyways that aside, thanks for making this video on l4d cut content!
p.s, I have had whispers of winter downloaded for a while, i guess this is my call to go play it!
thanks man! new campaign will be on the way, look out for it
That’s awesome that you made whispers of winter! I love that map!
The two panic events you are saying are caused by nothing are caused by birds being spooked and making noise. How you did not see this is beyond me.
by 'nothing' they mean, not direct player interaction, like shooting the gas can barricades, or starting a generator.
obviously you can consider walking into the trigger as "player interaction", but it's not really the same thing
wouldve been amazing if they actually kept making campaigns intead of just giving us the sacrifice and then much later release a fan campaign. it always felt like l4d2 never had the support it needed even though its a great game as it is its lacking
Anyone else kinda annoyed he kept saying orchid instead or orchard?
my b lol
what if now hear me out.. there was orchids at that orchard?
@@ZachHonest Orchard comes from a word for "garden" while Orchid comes from a word for "testicle". Just remember, when you walk through the garden, you don't wanna step on genitalia. Hope that helps !
@@DanSthether Um. Don't step on them... just walk past
I didnt gaf
Good video, but learning about all this stuff that was cut soured my mood. I really like the connection of "river" and Dead Air and Union Tech Tower just looks cool as hell.
Saad Maan
Apple orchid? Like the flower?
Orchard, an orchard is a plantation of fruit trees, so a plantation of apple trees
Nothin like some cider to briefly forget about the hordes
Yes its meant to be Orchard but I stg hes been saying orchid the entire video 😭😂
I was inordinately bothered by the repeated mispronunciations lol. Normally I wouldn't make a fuss but orchards and orchids are two different things!
Dude why this video still not popular yet??? IT SHOULD BE
My buddy Keith and I went to that Dam once, it looked better before zombies and some vampires took over
Bro did you use sad pokemon music? THATS AWESOME! it works well in this video it sets up a theme when going over the segments in this video.
Also i played this map with a friend who recommended me it on l4d1, the end was trying to do a holdout event while running to the end of a bridge?(Parish chapter 4?) But yeah it was fun.
Honest Dropped Baby!
This is my first time hearing about this cut content and hearing how Dam It is designed and plays, it's like the blueprint for how Back 4 Blood plays.
Some areas even resemble the final maps in B4B. It's a bit cool to see, but also just reminds me that Turtle Rock did too damn much and throws a lot of enemies at you lol.
The community can technically make these forgotten maps into an actual addon map. Which I hope some would do.
i mean some of map that get cut can remade into better to fit with vanila feel , like dam it the final need some work and fire forest can be use like the hotel in dead center
Bro, I literally heard yesterday about the campaign that was cut from l4d (never heard about its existence, even playing l4d for a long time) and today RUclips recommends me this video 😮😮
11:06
'scuse you sir, that campaign is pretty dang awesome
Reminds me of lost custom maps !!!! Some had crazy map changing effects or weather .
I love playing whispers of winter every Christmas
Great explanation and analysis but the way you say orchard is sounding like orchid and its driving me mad 😭😭😭
Dude, no way, you're that guy who made Whispers of WInter? I never knew.
I hope someone or maybe a group will create SFM videos or a full modded campaign of Dam It.
What's the reason for your strong anti-Valve, pro-Turtle Rock bias?
he doesnt like the people who actually carried l4d to completion ig
It's weirdly common in the modding community as a way to seem "cool." Valve fans have always been obsessed with pre-release beta content in every game, and since L4D's beta content was made by a different studio, a lot of people like to pretend there's some hidden spark of genius that makes Turtle Rock's work irreplaceable and totally distinct from Valve's style. Both companies worked on both games, but I guess people assume that saying these silly things is a shortcut to having cool, exclusive insider knowledge.
@ i honestly do not see the appeal nor is my opinion on turtle rock very positive
I would love to see how you made whispers of Winter
Call me crazy but I always preferred turtle rock's level design, the changes Valve made to the l4d 1 maps in 2 are just annoying with the amount of back to back horde events are forced. Dead Air's pre finale map is really bad for this.
i guessing the next major update, they will add dam it into the official campaign like the last stand
Honest Content drops it's a good day 🔥🔥
i do love unused content so yeah do part 2
so happy to bring back the l4d community
But how was Bill affected in Project M?
Bill is dead sooo 💀
@@ZachHonest he has atleast 2 more stocks, he can pull this back
@@ZachHonest defib him
you can say project mkultra bro the cia isnt gonna hunt you
wtf is project m
You saying Orchid instead of Orachard is crazy
I hope Dam it is added in a major community update
The Dam irl s Kinzua Dam in Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest. I've been fishing there before irl.
i wonder if that map with the helicopter was meant to be a left for dead 1 main menu map
Pretty sure there was another campaign made by turtlerock (I think) it was called “Redemption” it was supposed to connect between blood harvest and the sacrifice (I think? Idk I haven’t played it in like 3 year or 4 years)
Also there’s some maps in l4d2 that don’t connect somehow
Redemption is a custom campaign mod lol. You got everything else right but it was never even close to being official.
L4d1 player “reg” is the goat
As amazing as the Dam It restorarions are, I feel that there are some weird design choices here and there that could be improved into making it an actual fun and playable campaign (Which is very understandable since the whole thing isn't finished lol)
I understand that perspective too, because at the end of the day its someone else trying to recreate someone elses brush strokes.
This map seems a little too out there for Left 4 Dead. It sounds like a custom campaign through and through, and not on a good way. Even the name feels half baked.
agreed, adn the stacked panic events seem like its such a troll map, with so many easy deaths too.
No
Dam It could have been interesting if it was finished but it would require major reworks to the survivor bot AI to let them split into teams of two. It's a little too ambitious, which is probably why it was cut.
Homeboy actually told me to stay tuned and subscribe
left 4 dead needs a revival so badly
OR-CHARD, an orchid is a flower
Valve should release an update to the game where we get the cut campaigns
would love it if they officialized Dam It
music was a bit too loud mate, good vid
I'd like to see how you made your map
16:58 when you say : I used to believe that this Scrapped river campain. If you turn on the subtitles the Word “Scrapped” is captioned as “SCP” . This is a sign from the RUclips God’s for you to do something related to Scp!!!! ( Please?)
Man i wish they give the rights to value the dam it campaign 😢
Why are you pronouncing orchard like orchid? It's Ore-Churd
🤣💀🤣💀
What is up with that fov man?
LOL i play with mods on normally
@@ZachHonest I couldn't play with it like that lol. Good video nonetheless, great work

this video is cool, but im brought back down by remembering the state of l4d2, mainly referring to versus

These comments about orchard and orchid are tiresome lmao.
Good video
Make a sequel please
Good video but your pronunciation of orchard is making me bug out
You've got the timeline pretty wrong. Turtle Rock didn't really develop any part of Left 4 Dead without Valve. Valve took over production really early.
More accurately, it was a collaborative effort that started at Turtle Rock and added more and more Valve employees over time, according to interviews. Then L4D2 was pretty much all Valve until (IIRC) Turtle Rock was brought in for DLC -- almost certainly The Sacrifice.
Wish they had this on Xbox
Hell yeah man make a second one‚
