How I grow Neofinetia (Vanda) Falcata - Part 1

  • Since posting my first video on my neos, various people have requested over time that I do a tutorial on neo care. Well, this isn't it...(Sorry to say). I really don't do tutorial videos mostly because I don't think I'm qualified to recommend anything. So in lieu of that, I offer what I normally do with respect to my culture on this type of orchid. Because the topic is so big, I plan on releasing the videos in parts so they are easier to watch.
    On part 1, I go over how I moss up my neos, general climate, and general supplies that I use.
    Thank you for tuning in as always.

    What type of climate do you live? Loved the video. I have one Neo. Love the pots! And their color. Thanks for the tutorial.

    Since it is already January - did the scale issue get resolved? I have same thing on two of my neos, tried to spray with safers endall, tried to dip it into bleach - nothing helped, scale comes back after few weeks. Also, how often do you repot your neos? My pots look so much worse with algae than the one you were cleaning. Thank you.

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  4 года назад

      somewhat resolved. I see it from time to time. Trying to clean periodically. I think my neos weren't doing so well so they were prone to pests. So far I've been keeping a closer eye on their care so that might have helped.

    Excellent video Trac very interested in the fact that you put no moss underneath the roots on the top of the upended mesh pot. Obviously it works well. Scale isn’t something I have a problem with but the dreaded mealy bug is what we have in the UK Can I just ask how you dry your fans after the dip in the bleach solution or do you just shake them to dry them. Am waiting eagerly for part 2 to appear.

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  4 года назад

      i just shake the bleach solution off and then rinse it plain water.

    OMG. Finally good quality video, information and orchids in the same place, clearly earned my subscription!
    If you don't mind, I would like to hear your opinion on this.
    I was researching small orchids that are suitable for a vivarium (a well ventilated one) and a friend of mine recommended this species. So far I've been thinking to either mount it on a wooden structure made from possibly dragon wood and moss to let its roots grow freely as if it was hanging.
    With good ventilation do you think this plant could do well in a set-up like this? From what I've read so far stagnant air and wet conditions seem to be the biggest killers, but I might be missing on something.
    Thank you for reading!
    L.E.: The only fauna that will be present will be comprised of a small insect "clean-up crew" that will eat any mold that appears and keep everything fresh, so nothing will bother the orchid regarding that.

      @TracMcNguyen  4 года назад

      I haven't tried having them in vivariums but I think it could work. I would mount it on wood without any moss as that is how they grow naturally. Good luck.

    I am so glad to have your videos back😄 just one question: do you keep them completely dry during winter or just drier? Thank you and have a great day❤️

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  4 года назад

      Since I grow them under LEDs fixtures and indoor conditions, I don't change my watering habit during winter. Maybe that's why I get a second flush of growth during the year.

    Where did you get the plain terra cotta pots? I don't see them on the website in your description

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  3 года назад

      I got them while I was visiting Japan. There should be some available through Barampung.com. But the cost of importation versus value is really off. Sorry I can't recommend a really good source.

    Do you have any experience with Neistylis Baby Angel? I recently purchased a few. Would this type of potting be appropriate for them? Thank you, I love your videos.

      I haven't. But all of my neostylis and similar hybrids are in slotted baskets without any media. They seem to do well.

    why do u need to re moss, the moss looked like it was in great shape still?

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  3 месяца назад

      Thank you for your question. If memory serves me right, I needed to access the roots of this neo to trim off dead roots and clean up the plant. There are many reasons to remossing besides just having to replace old or decaying moss. Many growers will remoss it on an annual basis right before the growing season in order to showcase the roots. I've heard that many seasoned Korean growers will remoss their neos multiple times throughout the year - the reason for which I do not know. But I do have a feeling it has to do with aesthetics. No algae > algae... :D
